Ice Fishing in Greece
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has five locations listed where Ice Fishing is permitted in Greece.
Braddock Bay - Elevation 248 feet, covers 327 acres with 7.4 miles of shoreline.
Cranberry Pond - Elevation 248 feet, covers 221.6 acres with 2.5 miles of shoreline.
Long Pond - Elevation 248 feet, covers 441.9 acres with 3.8 miles of shoreline.
Buck Pond - Elevation 248 feet, covers 174.1 acres with 3 miles of shoreline.
Round Pond - located off Edgemere Drive in Greece.
Fish species, at all locations, include Yellow Perch, Sunfish, Rock Bass and Northern Pike.
Like open water angling, fishing through the ice requires skill and knowledge. But anyone can ice fish successfully if they do their homework. Learning about the water to be fished, the equipment and its capabilities, wearing proper clothing and taking safety precautions are all part of a successful, enjoyable winter ice fishing experience.
For more information on Ice Fishing regulations, safety, what to wear, methods, lures, bait, sleds and shelters go to https:// dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/freshwater-fishing/learn-to-fish/tipsskills/how-to-ice-fish.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich
I hope everyone stays safe and warm during this cold and snowy winter season! I want to remind residents that our Winter Parking Ordinance is in effect through April 15, midnight to 8 a.m. Until this time, please do not park on any Town roads or the grass on right-of-ways. This is to make plowing and salting of dedicated Town streets safer and more effective and to cut the cost of snow removal.

2024, the town had no shelter for the 100 to 120 animals it takes in annually. Recognizing the urgent need, town officials acted quickly to fund and build a state-of-the-art facility, ensuring a permanent, high-quality space for animal care.
The Town of Greece continues its strong partnership with Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets (GRASP), a nonprofit dedicated to rehoming stray and surrendered animals. Since its founding 30 years ago, GRASP has helped thousands of dogs and cats find loving homes, making a profound impact on the community.
The Town of Greece is celebrating a major milestone in animal welfare – the grand opening of its brand-new animal shelter! For years, Greece relied on a private vendor for kennel and veterinary services, but when that lease ended in March
As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related matters. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website: www.greeceny.gov.

Goodwill to relocate Dewey Avenue store to Greece Ridge Mall on February 28
The larger and enhanced store will occupy the former Ruby-Gordon retail space off Ridge Road
Goodwill of the Finger Lakes is moving its Greece Goodwill store at 3654 Dewey Avenue to a larger location at The Mall at Greece Ridge later this month. The thrift store will reside at 140 Greece Ridge Center Drive, located in the former Ruby-Gordon retail space at the north entrance of the mall. Doors to the larger and enhanced store will open at 9 a.m. on Friday, February 28, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Goodwill team members and community leaders. Goodwill will give away $10 gift cards to the first 100 shoppers at the grand opening celebration.
“Moving our thrift store from Dewey Avenue to The Mall at Greece Ridge allows us to better serve our shoppers,” Goodwill of the Finger Lakes President & CEO Jennifer Lake said. “There were several elements that made this location the right choice for us, including increased square footage of our retail floor to accommodate more inventory, convenient entrances and donation drop-off points, as well as access to public transportation and proximity to the highway, among other factors. We look forward to welcoming our shoppers very soon.”
Preparations to transfer retail operations in Greece from the Dewey Avenue location to The Mall at Greece Ridge are underway. The store at The Mall at Greece is now accepting donations from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until the grand opening on February 28.
This strategic move to a more convenient and centralized location in the Town of Greece will bring many benefits to Goodwill shoppers, including an expanded store layout with a broader selection of merchandise and ample parking for customers. The store, which is more than double the size of its current location, will have two main entrances — one on the exterior of the building for ground-level access and one interior mall entrance next to the Monroe County DMV.
Like all Goodwill stores, an assortment of quality apparel and household donations, seasonal merchandise and new goods will be available to shoppers, and the larger retail footprint will provide more choice and variety in available merchandise for customers to peruse. New at this location, larger donations, including home furnishings, will be accepted at a rolling garage door in the rear of the building for convenience.
“We are excited to welcome Goodwill to The Mall at Greece Ridge in the coming weeks,” Greece Ridge General Manager Jay Wilmot said. “Goodwill’s commitment to elevating individuals and strengthening the community aligns perfectly with our values at Greece Ridge. Their presence will not only enhance our retail mix but also provide greater value to both our shoppers and the local community we serve.”
Store hours for Goodwill at The Mall at Greece Ridge will be 9

a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. All in-store purchases benefit Goodwill’s many community-based services and impact programs that address critical needs within the region, including Goodwill Vision Enterprises, 211/LIFE LINE/988 and workforce development programs.

Greece Christian Preschool recognized as Monroe County’s top preschool
by Tami Raco
Greece Christian Preschool has been awarded the prestigious Consumer Choice Award for Monroe County’s top preschool. Each year, the Rochester Community’s Choice Awards recognizes the area’s top businesses and organizations. This annual award
process begins with public nominations, followed by a voting round where the community selects the top five finalists in each category. After a final vote, Greece Christian Preschool was honored to be chosen as the winner. Winners were revealed on continued on page 15

the Rochester Community’s Choice Awards Gala, which was held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Winners and runnersup are recognized online and in the Democrat and Chronicle. Visit https://yourchoiceawards.com/rochester/ for more information and to see the complete list of winners.
Greece Christian Preschool was surprised and thrilled by the nomination and award. The preschool has been serving families in the Greece community for over 50 years as a ministry of Greece Assembly of God. The church started in 1965 on Kuhn Road, and the preschool began at the church in 1971, named Happy Time Christian Nursery School. The church opened Greece Christian School as part of church ministry in 1982, providing education for children in grades K-8. In 1985, the church, school, and preschool moved to their newly built facility at 750 Long Pond Road. Happy Time Nursery School eventually became part of the Greece Christian School and was renamed Greece Christian Preschool. They have been committed to providing high-quality early childhood education in a caring, Christian environment.
Pastor Pat Medeiros, who has served as the Executive Pastor at Greece Assembly Church since 1995, has witnessed firsthand the blessing the school has been to so many families over the years. “We are incredibly grateful for the continued support from the community and our staff. We have a superb staff that loves these children like their own children,” said Pastor Pat. The preschool program offers flexible options with two-, three-, and five-day morning sessions to accommodate the needs of families.

Preschool Director, Kathy Astuto said, “There are many things that make Greece Christian Preschool special. Our curriculum is Biblically based and focuses on developing the Christian character of the children. Our preschool teaching staff fosters each child’s individual growth. They get

to know each child personally, nurturing their strengths and weaknesses, and encouraging them as they grow in all areas of preschool development. Our teachers not only invest in the lives of students but also in our parents, providing support for learning at home. We desire to nurture a love of learning that will help prepare children for the school years ahead.”
Greece Christian Preschool is located at 750 Long Pond Road. Enrollment for the 2025-26 school year is now open. Families with preschoolers are warmly invited to call and schedule a tour to learn more about what makes Greece Christian Preschool the community’s top choice. Greece plans dredging and long-term maintenance of the Braddock Bay navigation channel

As part of the ongoing revitalization of Braddock Bay, the Town of Greece has planned spring 2025 dredging and long-term maintenance of the navigation channel between the bay and Lake Ontario. The first phase of the plan is already complete with the purchase of a new hydraulic dredge, which arrived at Westpoint Marina the week of February 10. The dredge will be owned and operated by the town’s partner, Westpoint Marina LLC, who is under contract to run the marina and keep the channel clear.
The news is the latest turn of events in a 10-year effort to revitalize Braddock Bay and the town’s 300-slip public marina located there. Braddock Bay had long been plagued by environmental degradation and unpredictable access to Lake Ontario for recreational boaters. Prior discussions with state and federal agencies had languished, and by 2013 the town’s marina was largely empty and in serious disrepair.
Then in 2014, newly elected Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich made a commitment to revitalize Braddock Bay, stating at the time, “Braddock Bay’s unique mix of significant habitat and recreational boating opportunities is the focal point of the town’s waterfront area.” With the support of elected officials, a new effort was underway to identify funding and partnerships to assist in restoring Braddock Bay’s ecology and recreational benefits. By 2016, work had begun on the $10M EPA-funded Braddock Bay Wetland Restoration Project, which was a coordinated effort between the Town of Greece, NYSDEC (NYS Department
of Environmental Conservation), and USEPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), designed to prevent further loss of critical wetland habitat while at the same time restoring lake access for recreational boating. The project included construction of a new barrier island in the mouth of the bay and excavation of a new navigation channel, among other improvements.
With the new navigation channel in place by 2017, the town would go on to completely revitalize the marina, including new floating docks, a fueling station, a new seawall, a parking lot expansion and utility improvements, and, most recently, the addition of a sanitary pump-out station. In 2016, prior to this effort, the town’s marina had just 26 slips rented out. By 2022 that number had increased over ten-fold to more than 270. Dredging the navigation channel is critical to the marina’s ongoing success.
State permits are already in place for 2025 and the town has been coordinating with NYSDEC throughout the winter. Dredging is set to begin in early March and be completed by early April in time for boating season.
“Maintaining the dredge equipment at Braddock Bay will allow Westpoint Marina to keep the navigation channel clear with more reliability and without the added cost and uncertainty of mobilizing a subcontractor,” said Supervisor Reilich, “With this investment, and with a fully revitalized marina, recreational boating is here to stay in Braddock Bay and the Town of Greece.”

Jason “J-Mac” McElwain bobbleheads unveiled to celebrate anniversary of viral game
The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum has unveiled two limited-edition bobbleheads of Jason “J-Mac” McElwain, who attracted international media attention for his performance in a Senior Night basketball game for Greece Athena High School in 2006. The bobbleheads are being released in conjunction with the anniversary of the game, which was played on February 15. The special edition bobbleheads are being produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum and developed in partnership with Jason McElwain.
Standing on a circular basketball court base bearing his name, the first Jason McElwain bobblehead is in a shooting pose. He is wearing a white basketball uniform with “J-Mac” across the front along with a white headband and black shoes. The second bobblehead, which is also on a circular basketball court base bearing his name, has a smiling “J-Mac” being carried on the shoulders of two smiling Athena fans while giving the No. 1 signal.

final shot – a deep three-pointer from the right wing – right before the final buzzer sounded, the Athena student section stormed the court to celebrate their unlikely hero.
“J-Mac” ended up receiving an ESPY Award in the “Best Sports Moment” category, beating out Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game. He met President George W. Bush, numerous sports celebrities, and appeared on various talk shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, Good Morning America and Today. McElwain co-wrote a book with Daniel Paisner titled The Game of My Life. Currently, the 36year-old McElwain travels across the country to help raise funds for autism research and make media appearances as a public speaker. He is also an accomplished marathon runner. On September 23, 2012, he completed the MVP Health Care Rochester Marathon in 15th place in 3 hours, 1 minute, 41 seconds, a time that qualified him for the Boston Marathon. In 2014, he completed the Boston Marathon in 2:57:05.
The bobbleheads, which will be individually numbered to 2,006, are available exclusively through the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s Online Store (https://store.bobbleheadhall. com/products/jmac). The bobbleheads are $30 for the bobblehead featuring McElwain shooting and $40 for the celebration bobblehead or $65 for the set of two. There is a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order, and the bobbleheads are expected to ship in July.
Diagnosed with autism at two years old, McElwain was the student manager for the basketball team at Greece Athena High School. On February 15, 2006, coach Jim Johnson gave McElwain the opportunity to suit up for the Senior Night game against Spencerport. With the Trojans holding a comfortable lead, McElwain, wearing No. 52, entered the game with 4 minutes, 19 seconds remaining. After missing his first two shots, McElwain got “hot as a pistol.” He made six three-pointers and seven total baskets for a game-high 20 points much to the delight of the large crowd. After burying his
“We’re excited to unveil these bobbleheads of Jason McElwain celebrating his incredible and inspirational performance,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “What ‘J-Mac’ was able to accomplish inspired countless people not only in his community, but around the world and Jason has been doing an excellent job motivating people ever since. We hope these bobbleheads inspire people to follow their dreams.”
When asked about being honored with the new bobbleheads, Jason said, “First of all, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for this blessing to have a bobblehead of me all the glory to God. It takes talent to get to the top, but you need work ethic and character and attitude to stay there. John 14:1 ‘Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God also believe in me.’ If you don’t dream it, you can’t become it. It’s so surreal to have a bobblehead done on myself. I would like to thank God for using me for the last 19 years and four years of being saved by the Lord Jesus Christ.” Provided information and photo
Greece Police Department announces C.A.R.E. Alert program
Chief Wood is pleased to introduce the C.A.R.E. Alert program, a voluntary initiative fostering collaboration between officers and the Greece community to enhance communication with individuals with special needs.
The C.A.R.E. Alert program is designed to support individuals with conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Autism, Dementia, Down’s Syndrome, mental illness, or substance use disorders. By choosing to register, community members can provide key information – such as communication preferences, potential triggers, and calming techniques – that helps officers respond more effectively during emergencies.
Purpose and Value
This voluntary program enables officers to proactively identify and understand the needs of vulnerable individuals, ensuring a safer, more informed response. It is especially valuable for individuals prone to wandering or requiring specialized care. By sharing this critical information, officers can act swiftly to locate and assist those in need, while minimizing the risk of escalation during crises.
Enrollment Process
Community members or their guardians can submit an enrollment form along with a recent photo. Once verified, the information is linked to the individual’s address through the Office of Emergency Communications (O.E.C.). This ensures officers have access to the details they need when responding to calls involving a registered participant.

Programs like C.A.R.E. Alert have been implemented successfully in other departments across the country. The Greece Police Department is proud to be the first to bring this valuable, community-centered program to our town.
