Tops joins JDRF to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes

Tops Friendly Markets is once again partnering with JDrF as they embark on their 54th year to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D). This year’s campaign will begin Sunday, February 25, and run through Saturday, March 16, 2024. The goal is to raise money to help fund research to help find a cure for T1D. The paper sneaker, which was designed by a Tops associate back in 1993 and is now widely used nationally as well as i nternally in JD r F fundraising

campaigns, will be sold at Tops registers for a $1 donation.

Now more than ever the onset of T1D can happen suddenly, impacting people of any age, affecting them every moment of every day, and it lasts a lifetime. Since 1993 Tops has raised over $14.44 million dollars for the cause with Tops fundraising efforts putting the company in the top fundraisers across national corporate partners. provided information

Brockport’s Barclay School students draw Rochester Americans’ portraits for Kid’s Day

Barclay School second graders from Mr. Zelent’s class and third graders from Mrs. Underwood/Mrs. Quigley’s class were selected to draw portraits of the Rochester Americans, coaches and the announcer for Kids Day on Sunday, February 18.

Students were taught how to draw portraits by Barclay school’s art teacher, Molly Dorsey. The students’ portraits were shown on the Jumbotron during the game. Prior to the game, players guessed from the students’ portraits. The portraits were signed by the players and will be returned to the students (hopefully by Moose the Mascot).

Churchville Elementary School raises money during AHA Kids Heart Challenge

Churchville Elementary School students helped support the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge. Students around the country participate in the Kids Heart Challenge to learn about the importance of heart health, exercise and giving back to others.

During the event, CES students learned the lifelong skill of hands-only Cpr and raised funds to help kids with special hearts.

This year’s heart hero is CES kindergartener Ila. She was born with multiple congenital heart defects and underwent her first open-heart surgery at seven days old. After a final surgery when she was 10 months old, Ila has made a full recovery and her heart is fully repaired.

This year, the school raised $23,148 for the event and a few lucky students had the chance to turn CES physical education teachers and the school principals into human ice cream sundaes in celebration. provided information and photos

A Legacy Deferred: The Architecture of Thomas W.

The Greece Historical Society (GHS) sponsored a Cultural Resource Survey of The Architecture of Thomas W. Boyde, Jr., Rochester’s first African American architect. The project was funded by grants from the Rochester Area Community Foundation, the Preservation League of New York State/New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), funding from GHS and individual donations.

The project involved online and in person research, oral history interviews, creation of a database of Boyde’s projects, photography, and a focus on Thomas Boyde, Jr. in the context of mid20th century African American architects.

According to the Greece Historical Society website, “Thomas W. Boyde, Jr. was a prolific designer of Mid-Century Modern homes and businesses, but also did significant work designing buildings for economically disadvantaged communities. The survey will help identify Boyde’s built work which spans across Western New York, including several houses in the town of Greece, and bring new appreciation to the work of this supremely talented architect who left a remarkable legacy in the greater Rochester area.”

The Boyde Project team discovered so much more.

The project team included, Christopher Brandt, architect at Bero Architecture PLLC; Jeffrey A. “Free” Harris, independent historian and historic preservation consultant from Hampton, Virginia; Katie Eggers Comeau, Senior Architect and architectural historian at Bero Architecture; Gina M. DiBella, preservation consultant from Greece; Jenna Huizinga, Brighton Historian’s Office intern and SUNY Geneseo student; and Alexis Rivers, research assistant.

Architectural Historian, Katie Comeau’s focus was on the biography of Mr. Boyde. She said, “It was surprising how prolific he was. It goes beyond

pital. On so many properties his role in the design was up in the air. To find out, and attribute, just how many properties he designed in the Rochester area, and beyond, was exciting.”

Thomas W. Boyde, Jr. was the first African American architect to graduate from Syracuse University. The year was 1928. “When you think about the rarefied world in the 1920s, as an African American, the obstacles faced in becoming an architect were extreme, getting into schools, and after, getting a job. Upon graduation, most African American professionals did work related to government projects. Some were entrepreneurs, some sought to open their own practice. It was a difficult task without work experience. At that time in history, there was an established network of connected African American professionals. Boyde was aware of his peers, and his peers were aware of what he was doing,” said Jeffrey “Free” Harris, independent historian and historic preservation consultant on the project.

The Project Team was very fortunate to have the cooperation of Boyde’s family in their research. Family members became a valuable source of many stories that pointed the researchers in the right direction. Some of Boyde’s archives were donated to the Rochester Museum and Science Center. These drawings were key to the study, and attribution, of Boyde’s work.

Architect Christopher Brandt conducted an extensive study of the archives. He said, “Our goal is to show Boyde’s career accomplishments. Much of his work was downplayed or omitted during his lifetime. His significant contributions were many times diminished. We found his influence, his reputation among clients, as well as the mutual respect contractors had for him, and the success of his private practice, all aspects defining Boyde’s architectural career. It was really exciting, and a fine moment, to be able to support and confirm what Boyde’s family have so long advocated for, that it was his design work on Monroe Community Hospital. Boyde’s aesthetic signature in drafting was evident in the

“I had the opportunity to interview one of the employees that worked for Mr. Boyde in his private practice. She talked about how much his employees loved working with him. She described him as a patient man, a mentor and a professional. He was a detail oriented man, well dressed and meticulous in all aspects of his life and work. He was trained both as an architect and an engineer, working as both on many of his projects,” Katie Comeau said.

Boyde worked as a sole-practitioner, from 1947 to 1981, the year of his death. When designing single family houses, Boyde worked directly with the homeowners, meeting with them personally, listening to their ideas, and incorporating these ideas into the design. He never built cookie cutter homes, each home was designed individually, with the homeowners’ requests realized, and always incorporating elements of his very distinctive design style. He possessed the ability to adapt to all design languages. For each project, Boyde presented the homeowner with an artistic rendering

of the home, which he created himself, using pastels and color pencils drawn on the backside of vellum.

The team found that during his career, Boyde designed over 700 projects, 300 of which are in the Rochester area. The archives they worked from are not complete, there is still a significant amount of undiscovered files of Boyde’s work yet to explore. Greece resident, Gina DiBella, worked on the project team as a preservation consultant. A member of the Greece Historical Society who sponsored the project, she wrote the applications for the grants that funded the project. She said, “Mr. Boyde’s homes are everywhere. A friend from college grew up in a Boyde home. My grandparents in Irondequoit lived three doors down from a Boyde home. I drive by one of his homes in my neighborhood all the time. We have researched over 700 Boyde designs, and feel there are at least an additional one third more properties yet to be discovered.”

“The Greece Historical Society was honored to sponsor the cultural resource survey of the life and architecture of Thomas W. Boyde, Jr.,” said Greece Historical Society president, William Sauers. “Mr. Boyde had an important influence in the local community, not just Greece, but the greater Rochester/ Western New York area.”

“We all feel that we would like to know more about Boyde and his amazing body of work. To discover, and attribute the additional homes that are out there, yet to be discovered, is the goal. It is important to let people know just how influential he was to the architecture of the area, and just how extraordinary he was. Boyde was an architect, an engineer and an artist. A multi-talented man, with a rare level of skills that enabled him to create such an amazing legacy. We want to let people know how good he actually was,” Katie Comeau said.

Boyde Designed Properties

Greece residential properties:

•Edgemere Drive - Considered one of Boyde’s best residential designs, The Friederich Residence (195556). Friederich & Sons, the largest and most significant general contracting company in Rochester from the early, through mid-twentieth century. It speaks volumes about the level of respect those in the construction industry had for Mr. Boyde, when someone like Mr. Friederich chose him over any of his contemporaries to design his personal home.

•Other identified residential homes in Greece include properties on Edgemere Drive (1949-50); Haviland Park (1950); Carrington Drive (1951) and North Avenue (1956).

Spencerport artist transforms common things

Artwork created by Spencerport resident Teresa Schreiber Werth will be on display through March 29 in an exhibit titled “Common Things Transformed” at 1570 Gallery at Valley Manor in Rochester. Known to many from her writing, including articles printed in Westside News, Werth has now embarked on a whole new creative phase, creating artwork, large and small, from all things natural.

Werth said, “When the ‘pandemic dust’ settled, I realized a new and unexpected connection with nature.

I began making original artwork composed almost exclusively of natural elements such as: catalpa, peony, mesquite and lotus pods, fern fronds,

pine cones, tree bark, burnt wood, drift wood, seashells, acorns and feathers.”

In addition to these natural materials, Werth uses paint, fabric, vintage jewelry, second-hand frames and unusual objects to provide context.

“When people look at my artwork, I hope that they begin to see these natural elements differently, these dried remnants of once-green and living things that live on as expressions of beauty, even as they have, in a sense, ‘died.’ My objective is to transform these disparate pieces into assemblages that are fresh, unique and expressive,” Werth said.

1570 Gallery at Valley Manor is located at 1570 East Avenue, Rochester. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. When visiting the 1570 Gallery, sign in at the front desk of Valley Manor and be prepared to wear a mask while in the facility. Werth also asks attendees to sign the guest book in the gallery to let her know who stopped in to see her work.

IJC Great Lakes Water Quality Board seeks public opinion about the Great

IJC Great Lakes Water Quality Board is seeking public opinions in a new online poll about the Great Lakes, water quality issues and other topics related to restoring and protecting this unique freshwater system.

“We hope that people answer our poll and also share it far and wide so that we can collect views and ideas from thousands of folks throughout the Great Lakes region and beyond,” said Jon Allan, US co-chair of the International Joint Commission’s Great Lakes Water Quality Board.

To take the poll, visit the board’s website at ijc.org/wqb/great-lakes-poll, where it will be available until March 15.

“Our past three polls clearly demonstrate the love that people have for the Great Lakes, and this year’s poll reflects that affinity with questions related to recreation, drinking water, regulations and other aspects of these waters,” said Allan, also senior adviser at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability.

The online poll is complementary to the board’s latest telephone poll, which began collecting responses earlier this month and is designed to be statistically valid and representative of public opinion in the region.

“The board expects to report the final results from both versions of the poll this summer,

and they will be shared with the public, media, policymakers and other interested individuals,” said Chris McLaughlin, Canadian co-chair of the Great Lakes Water Quality Board and executive director of the Bay Area Restoration Council.

“Answering the poll questions does not need to be limited to Great Lakes-region residents. We are interested in collecting a broad and diverse set of opinions to help us understand how people view the Great Lakes.”

The 2024 poll is the board’s fourth, with prior polls conducted in 2015, 2018 and 2021. This year’s poll repeats several previous questions to track trends.

Brockport Fire District

RESOLUTION 2024-21

Purchase of Computers and Technology Equipment

BE IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution is subject to a permissive referendum and shall not take effect until 30 days has elapsed after its adoption, or unless approved at a special election of the qualified voters of the Brockport Fire District after a proper petition calling for such special election is filed with the Secretary of the Brockport Fire District within the time permitted by law.

The following resolution was adopted by the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Brockport Fire District on February 19, 2024.

WHEREAS, pursuant to General Municipal Law §6g, the Brockport Fire District did establish the Brockport Communications Equipment Reserve, a Capital Reserve Fund to finance the cost of acquisition of new or used, upgraded, additional, and replacement communications equipment, including base station radios, vehicle radios, portable radios and pagers, for communication purposes for the Brockport Fire District and in addition to assist the Brockport Fire District with the expense and cost of integrating with the new communication system implemented by Monroe County and to assure the Brockport Fire District is in compliance with this new system.

WHEREAS, there is a need to replace the current computers in the Brockport Fire District. The current desktop and laptop computers that operate with Windows 10 will be unsupported by Microsoft by the end of 2025. Not every district computer is able to run the Windows 11 upgrade with the current processors. Thus 5 computers, which are unable to support the Windows 11 upgrade, will be replaced with new Intel Mini CPU’s in 2024 which are able to support the Windows 11 upgrade. This is a continuation of the computer replacement from 2023 as the replacements are being made in a 3-year period to reduce budgetary cost for a single year replacement process. Additionally, 4 Firewalls, which will be outdated, need to be replaced in 2024. Updated Firewalls are important to defer outside Cyber Attacks, and provide Internet Cyber Security against unauthorized access, malware infections, and data breaches.

WHEREAS, the above-mentioned acquisitions are to be financed from monies in the above-referenced “Brockport Communications Equipment Reserve”, and it is the purpose of said capital reserve fund to fund the acquisition and purchase of such equipment, as well as other cyber security systems necessary,

NOW BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Brockport Fire District is hereby authorized to expend from the “Brockport Communications Reserve Fund an amount not to exceed $8,000 for the purpose of acquisition of the Intel Mini CPU’s and new Firewalls,

The adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly put to a vote and upon roll call the vote was as follows:

Patricia Connors, Chairwoman, Commissioner Yes

Allyn Hammel, Vice Chairman, Commissioner Yes

Willard Bird, Commissioner Yes

Michael Koss, Commissioner Yes

David Georgiev, Commissioner Absent

The resolution was thereupon duly declared to have been adopted subject to a permissive referendum.

Maple SugarFest returns to Spencerport March 2

Spencerport CSD’s 2024 Maple SugarFest will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Last held in 2020, the event is hosted by the Spencerport Nature Center Committee and includes a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities such as a pancake breakfast, free crafts and activities for children, create-your-own bird feeder, geocaching, nature-touch table, sap boiling and tree-tapping demonstrations, and much more.

The pancake breakfast runs from 9 to10:30 a.m. at the High School’s east cafeteria. Cost of the breakfast will be $7 per person and free for children age five and under. Tickets will be sold at the door and donations are welcomed.

Real maple syrup will be available as long as supplies last.

Proceeds from the pancake breakfast, along with donations, fund the Nature Center’s DEC Summer Camp Scholarship program and the instructional pavilion. Since the scholarship was first offered in 2015, ten Spencerport CSD students have been funded to attend these camps.

More information and an event schedule for the Maple SugarFest can be found on the Nature Center webpage found under the Parents & Community dropdown menu on the district website, https://www. spencerportschools.org.

Modern lessons from WWII

Eighth graders in Sarah Boily’s and Jaime Kurmis’ classes at Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton took a trip back in time recently when they examined genuine WWII artifacts. Students worked in groups looking at the artifacts and other sources, then compared WWII topics with modern ideas. For example, students compared the benefits of conservation and victory gardens during WWII to those of conservation and community gardens today.

Afterward, students created a small project having to do with bettering our community using modernized

versions of the tactics used during WWII. The projects included planting a vegetable seed and writing a letter advocating for the need for a community garden; planting a tree seed and writing a letter advocating for conservation and recycling; writing a postcard to a soldier and thanking them for their service; or creating three Instagram posts that could be used as positive propaganda to make change in our society.

Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The 28-

year-old, 6’11” basketball star nicknamed the “Joker” was selected for the honor based on his record-setting performances throughout 2023, in which he became the first player to lead the playoffs in total points, rebounds

and assists. Jokic led his team to the NBA finals with his fantastic playing and taking his scoring to another level, capturing the franchise’s first NBA title. He was also given the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award. He is being compared to Magic Johnson and LeBron James and he is a prolific force and continues to move forward in his career.

Tony Liccione, of the Hickok Belt® Award, said in a statement, “Nikola Jokic’s selection

recognizes him as ‘the best of the best’ across all professional sports. It is only fitting, after playing the incredible way he did in the 2023 season, that he be included in the long line of Hickok Belt® Award champions. His record setting achievement is one for the record books.”

Other finalists for the overall yearly award included each of the 2023 Hickok Belt® Award monthly winners, who finished in the follow-

ing order, based on the NSMA voting: Simone Biles (gymnastics), Mikaela Shiffrin (skiing), Coco Gauff (tennis), Joel Embiid (basketball), Adolis Garcia (baseball), Carlos Alcaraz (tennis), Jon Rahm (golf), Damian Lillard (basketball), and Dak Prescott (football). Hilton’s Mann nets first collegiate goal for Nazareth University

It certainly seemed longer than it actually took for him, but Hilton native and freshman Nate Mann scored his first collegiate goal February 16 on home ice for Nazareth University’s men’s hockey against Chatham.

“Obviously it felt really nice to finally get the monkey off my back, but the boys have really been supporting me all season,” Mann said.

The 6’3”, 180 left wing has been contributing offensively to the Golden

Flyers attack, racking up eight assists over the first 16 games.

“I’m glad the coaching staff put me in the role they did this year. We haven’t had the greatest year and bounces haven’t gone our way, but it’s good to get into the playoffs to go out and see what we have.”

Nazareth earned the eighth and final seed for the UCHC postseason and were set to face top-seed and nationally ranked Utica in the first round.

Mann spent five seasons developing in the Buffalo Jr. Sabres pro-

gram and was part of them winning a 15-U National Championship. He then went to the North American Hockey League (NAHL) for three full campaigns bouncing from Aberdeen to El Paso to Minot over two seasons before spending the 2022-23 year with Lone Star where he registered 22 points over 50 games.

“I bounced around because several weren’t a great fit, but it was great to spend the whole season in Lone Star with a coach that liked my game.”

The just turned 22-year-old then waited as long as he could for a Division I college hockey offer before committing to Nazareth last summer.

“He’s played really well for us here,” Nazareth head coach George Roll said. “He’s dealt with some injuries and missed some games, but he’s had so many chances to score, and I know he’s been frustrated. But these last few games have been his best and again tonight that line I thought was great with the three freshmen (Kai Shen and Cole Bauman).

“They have such good speed…and then Nate’s such a hard-working kid down low that can create loose pucks for the other two and hit them in stride. As long as they play that way and create chances, that’s all we can ask for.”

After all those seasons of the family EZPass getting overused on the Thruway, at 6:09 of the first period, Mann scored with an assist from Bauman. After the celebration Mann led his teammates toward the Nazareth bench for glove taps while Golden Flyers junior captain Jeremy Swartz (Rochester) remembered to grab the puck…to help Mann and his family celebrate this memory for years.
