Local teams win awards at the FIRST® Robotics Competition regional The FIRST® Robotics Competition Finger Lakes Regional tournament event was held March 15 through 17 at Rochester Institute of Technology Gordon Field House. The competition drew more than 50 teams from around the world, including a team from China and one from Brazil. Like all the FIRST regional competitions, it is a stepping stone for teams trying to reach the FIRST World Championship competitions that will be held at the end of April in Detroit and Houston. Working with adult mentors, FIRST Robotics Competition students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young innovators build a robot, they compete in events for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities. This season features an arcade-themed floor game played in three-team alliances. Team 340 - Greater Rochester Robotics from Churchville-Chili High School, Team 3015 - Ranger Robotics from Spencerport High School, and Cadet Robotics from Hilton High School all advanced to the FIRST® Championship, the world’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for students, to be held April 25 through 28 in Detroit. During the 2018 season, approximately 3,650 FIRST Robotics Competition teams in 27 countries are competing to earn a championship spot.

Churchville-Chili’s Team 340 takes first place After an exciting first place showing at the Central New York FIRST Robotics competition at SUNY Polytechnic earlier this month, Churchville-Chili’s Team 340 topped the field again at the 2018 Finger Lakes Regional. The 25-member team will be headed to the world championship in Detroit in April. The team’s director, teacher Jason Rees, said, “Our team members plan ahead. They analyze the game, build on what they know and emphasize their strengths. We also owe a lot to our mentors: engineering students from RIT, and family members with and without engineering backgrounds. Together, we’ve made it to the world championships in all but two of the last 19 years.”
Spencerport’s Team 3015 wins Chairman’s Award On St. Patrick’s Day 2018, Irish eyes were smiling on FIRST Team 3015, Ranger Robotics as they were awarded the prestigious FIRST Chairman’s Award at the completion of the 2018 Finger Lakes Regional competition. According to the official FIRST web site, the Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, honoring the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become scientists, engineers, and technologists. This is the third time the team has won a Chairman’s award (2016, 2017), but the first time here at the local competition. “Winning here at the local Finger Lakes Regional is an amazing honor and shows just how hard these kids work all year,” said Nancy Mancuso, a Spencerport High

move on to compete in Detroit. To qualify for the Regional tournament, Cadet Robotics built two identical robots in the six weeks between January 6 and February 20. On February 20 the team bagged the competition robot and spent 25 hours over the next two weeks practicing driving and perfecting the programming of the robot at neighboring team Ranger Robotics’ practice field in Spencerport. Cadet Robotics is a rookie team established by the Hilton High School Technology Department. The team has been meeting for the past year preparing for their first build season. “Cadet Robotics students are already giving back to the community that supports them by volunteering with the elementary school robotics clubs and demonstrating their robot at elementary school events,” said Advisor Stephanie Mattice.

Brockport CSD Assistant Principal named Assistant Principal of the Year Jerrod Roberts, assistant principal at A.D. Oliver Middle School in the Brockport Central School District, has been selected as a 2018 New York State Assistant Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS) and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). This award is given annually to a member of SAANYS and NAESP who has set the pace, character, and quality of education for the children in his or her school. Nominees are administrators who are committed to students, parents, and the community and have shown exceptional contributions to the educational process. A longtime educator, Roberts has served as assistant principal at A.D. Oliver Middle School for the past four years, during which time he initially assisted and now leads the implementation of the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) systems and structures at the school centered around three essentials: be respectful, be responsible, and be a learner. This has resulted in a more than 40 percent decrease in disciplinary referrals and increased student achievement as well as a positive turnaround of the culture at the middle school. Based on the success of the program, PBIS has since been implemented districtwide as well as regionally, and Roberts, along with his team, also had the opportunity to present their success at the 14th International PBIS Conference in Denver, Colorado. Commented science teacher Amy Phillips, “Jerrod has truly been a leader of the PBIS movement. From planning booster sessions, incentives, and teacher trainings, Jerrod has really become the ambassador for PBIS at AD Oliver. Due to his passion and work ethic, our staff is motivated to implement a PBIS approach.” While describing Roberts’ work with PBIS,
teacher Jessica Barton noted, “His positive outlook and willingness to work through any challenges helps make Brockport a wonderful place to be, either as a student or staff.” A testament to his standing within the district at large, Principal Melody Martinez-Davis commented, “First and foremost, Mr. Roberts is highly respected among staff, students, parents, and the greater community… When entering any space, Mr. Roberts carries a sense of optimism, tenacity, and passion that is unwavering. He is a role model for all educators and students and a valuable partner to parents and our administration team. Students report that Mr. Roberts cares about them as a person and he truly listens to them.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lesli C. Myers noted, “Jerrod’s positive influence has been felt district-wide, specifically with his significant contributions to the Oliver Middle School and district-level strategic plans. He is adept at using and evaluating strategic processes and structures to promote continuous and sustainable improvement, within and beyond his area of responsibility as an assistant principal. Further, he has been instrumental in contributing to a positive middle school climate.” Roberts received his bachelor of arts in Spanish and bachelor of science in education degrees from SUNY Geneseo, his master of inclusive education degree from Nazareth College, and his professional school administration degree from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Roberts will be honored for his accomplishments at an awards ceremony on May 4 at the Century House in Latham, New York. Join the Genesee County Master Gardeners this spring as they “Catch the Gardening Bug.” Four gardening programs will be offered throughout the season, with the first one on March 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. Master Gardener Brenda Fox will present “Companion Plants for Bearded Iris.” Bearded iris are some of the most beautiful flowers, yet are surprisingly easy to grow. The first half of the program will focus on how best to grow iris, and will discuss when to plant or divide, soil preparation and sun requirements. The second half will explore colorful combinations with shrubs and perennials. These will be illustrated with lavish photos showing both contrasting and complementary color schemes. On April 5, join us for “Dahlias 101.” Dahlias come in a rainbow of colors, shapes and sizes, and produce beautiful blooms up until frost. Get your dahlia questions answered as Master Gardener Brandie Waite discusses how to plant, grow and over winter the tubers. Once you start growing dahlias, you won’t be able to stop. Registration is required by March 29. Permaculture is based on natural systems. On April 18, learn more about this topic at “Permaculture 2.0.” Building
on last year’s program when participants learned about zones, sectors, guilds and edges as they apply to permaculture, Master Gardener Dan Esler will present on the considerations for successful guild design and a reasonable timeline when developing a permaculture site. Registration is required by April 13. Get tips from Master Gardeners for “Dividing Perennials,” on April 25. Three good reasons for dividing perennials are to control the size of the plants, to maintain plant health and to increase their number. Since many perennials respond well to being divided in early spring, there will be a demonstration of the steps for dividing a variety of perennials. Weather permitting, plants right out of the garden will be used. Registration is required by April 20. All classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Genesee County Cornell Cooperative Extension at 420 East Main Street, Batavia. The cost is $10 per person, per class. Sweden cautions about speed; sets spring pick-up dates Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson recently met with Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department Captain Douglas Comanzo. One of the topics of conversation was speed on Owens Road. Drivers should expect increased sheriff ’s patrol on the road and be mindful of speed and other safe driving habits. The Town of Sweden has set spring pick-up dates for April 30 through May 4 in the Town outside the Village. Seven local children’s authors sign books to support Seymour Library The Seymour Library is hosting a fundraiser to support local literacy by bringing seven local children’s authors to the library. The event will include book signings, gift basket raffles and crafts for children. Roberts students take action against gun violence The Roberts Wesleyan Student Senate held a gathering in the library cafe on Wednesday evening, March 14, where fellow students and the community were invited to write letters to the survivors of the Parkland, Florida tragedy. Student Senate chair, Cheyanne Zaremba, spoke about her passion, encouraging the community to raise their voices in support of ending gun violence. Three named to 2018 B-B Alumni Hall of Fame Byron-Bergen Central School District has named three alumni to the district’s Hall of Fame for 2018. Jacqueline Mullen (1972), Michael List (1978), and Kimberly (Thompson) McLean (2000) join the ranks of other distinguished Byron-Bergen alumni honored with a place in the Alumni Hall of Fame for their achievements after graduation. The 2018 Alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Wednesday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. in the Byron-Bergen High School Auditorium. The Alumni Hall of Fame recognizes the accomplishments of the district’s graduates. It provides young people with positive adult role models and shows that graduates of Byron-Bergen can achieve high levels of accomplishment in their lives. This honor is in its 15th year and has become part of the school district culture. It is a permanent reminder to students about the outcome of hard work and diligence. Jacqueline A. Mullen (Class of 1972) Editor of the school newspaper, member of National Honor Society/Student Council, and American Field Service (AFS) exchange student, Mullen was active in sports and music activities at Byron-Bergen HS. She received her bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies and Spanish from Hartwick College, and her master’s degree in community economic development from Southern New Hampshire University. Mullen has lived and worked in Puerto Rico for over 39 years. She currently serves as Vice Chancellor of Sponsored Research and Programs for Universidad del Turabo, and is active as a consultant in organizational development and fundraising. She was the executive director at the Puerto Rico Farm Bureau (1991-95) and the community economic development director at Jacqueline A. Mullen Progressa (1996-2000). She has never stopped learning, and holds numerous certifications and affiliations with professional organizations. Her family includes husband Eladio, daughter Natalena, four stepchildren, and 14 grandchildren. Mullen says she is proud of the educational opportunities she received at Byron-Bergen that served as a foundation for all her endeavors. Her dedication to family, friends, community, and profession make her an excellent role model for the students of Byron-Bergen.

Michael List (Class of 1978) While attending Byron-Bergen, List participated in National Honor Society, the AFS Exchange Program, chorus, Jr. Olympics, JV and Varsity Wrestling, 4-H and several other clubs and organizations. After graduating, he worked for the Bergen Canning Factory, Edward O’Ingerick, Inc. of RIT Housing Developments, and Victor Furniture. He joined the staff of Byron-Bergen CSD in the Maintenance/Buildings and Grounds Department in 1984, working his way up to the leadership role of Director of Facilities. He retired from the District in 2017. List is an active community member. He has held many volunteer positions in Victory Baptist Church, and taken several mission trips, Michael List including one to Haiti. After many class hours and counseling, he received certification as a Biblical Counselor in 2013. He has raised four children with his wife Marsha, and has several grandchildren. List sets a wonderful example for students as someone who always lends a hand, gives 110% to his alma mater, church and community, and remains true to faith and family. Kimberly (Thompson) McLean (Class of 2000) During her time at Byron-Bergen, McLean was her class’s Salutatorian. She participated in track, volleyball, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Future Teachers of America, and many other activities. She was a Genesee County Fair Queen contestant and a cheerleader. McLean graduated from Geneseo State College in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics. She received her master’s degree from Geneseo in 2008. She has volunteered with several local organizations and received many scholarships and accolades including membership in Pi Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma, and the Golden Key International Honor Society. Currently teaching math at Spencerport High School, McLean was awarded Teacher of the Year (2010), received The Golden Apple Award (2016), been class advisor, coached Jr. FLL Robotics, been an intern advisor for National Honor Society, coached Kimberly (Thompson) Powder Puff Football, and McLean taught summer school. McLean’s passion for teaching, dedication and hard work make her an excellent role model for our youth. All three inductees will spend the day of March 28 visiting with Byron-Bergen students and sharing how their school experience influenced their lives. Return of the Kraken by T.R. Hendrick I figured that I’d better give you another Rosalee update because at the rate she is going this might be her last. If this crazy white dog continues on her path of resistance, I am going to give her away to the closest circus. I swear she is going to pain-in-the-ass night school while we are sleeping. How else can you explain that at ten months of age she is actually getting wilder rather than calmer? Somebody has to be teaching her to be this bad, she can’t be this wicked on her own. Girl Scouts of Western NY accepting nominations for Women of Distinction Awards Nominations are being accepted through March 30 for the Women of Distinction Awards hosted by Girl Scouts of Western New York. Women of Distinction is an annual dinner fundraising event presented by Girl Scouts of WNY to celebrate outstanding women who embody the Girl Scout values of courage, confidence, and character in their professional and civic lives and therefore, are role models for today’s girls. Honorees come from many different walks of life and align with Girl Scouts goal of developing strong girls in all sectors of society. Each year the Girl Scouts of WNY call upon the public to help identify these women who exemplify excellence through their professional achievements as well as their volunteerism. Those selected to be 2018 Women of Distinction will develop a mentoring relationship with a Girl Scout, meeting with her to share insights and advice. The Girl Scout will then present the recipient with her award during a ceremony on September 20, 2018.
To qualify, nominees must live or work in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, or Wyoming counties. She does not need to have been a Girl Scout, and anyone in the com-

Hunter Education course offered in Brockport A Hunter Education course is being offered at the Conservation Club of Brockport, 291 Ladue Road, Brockport on April 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and April 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Beginning April 1 interested students may register on-line through the NYS DEC https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/92267.html. Registered students may obtain the Student Manual at the club on Mondays during open trap from 4:30 to 8 p.m. or from the Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street in Brockport. You may also download a copy from the DEC website. Download directions are provided during the registration process. Students should allow adequate time to prepare the
mandatory homework. This free course is offered to persons interested in obtaining a New York State hunting license. Safe firearm handling, tree stand safety, hunting planning and safety are taught along with other New York State mandated content. Students successfully completing the course are issued the Hunter Education Certificates of Qualification required to obtain small or large game hunting licenses. The Conservation Club of Brockport regularly provides firearms and hunting educational opportunities. Some basic trap instruction is offered at Monday afternoon trap shooting (open to public participation). A basic
trap shooting course for beginning trap shooters will also be offered in the next months. Additional Hunter Education courses and a Bowhunter Education course are planned for yet to be announced fall dates. Ladies Auxiliary starting in 1949, attended the Nutrifare program in Kendall for over 14 years and worked as a medical secretary at the former Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mayes was predeceased by her husband Gordon, a son Paul Mayes, three brothers: “Bus,” Warren, and Donald Haag, and two sisters: Muriel Armstrong and Florence Kedian. Louise was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Robert “Bob” Slaughter, Jr. She is survived by her three daughters, Megan (Richard) Secatore, Amy Slaughter, and Emily Robin (Michael) Portrait by Todd Elliott provided Minerva; seven grandby Slaughter’s office. children, Lauren and Daniel (Erin) Secatore, Emma and Jackson Clark, and Mason, Linus, and Ione Minerva, and one great-grandchild, Henry Secatore. Slaughter was elected to Congress in 1986. Prior to that, she served in the New York State Assembly from 1982 to 1986 and the Monroe County Legislature between 1976 and 1979. While holding elected office, she was regional coordinator to Mario Cuomo from 1976 to 1978 while he served as secretary of state and from 1979 to 1982 while he served as lieutenant governor. At the time of her death, Slaughter, 88, was the dean of the New York congressional delegation, serving her 16th term in Congress. She rose to become the first woman to chair the powerful House Committee on Rules since it was formally constituted on April 2, 1789, and was serving as its ranking member. She was a relentless fighter for families in Monroe County and across the nation, and authored the landmark Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) and the Stop Trading On Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, among many other accomplishments. Slaughter was a champion for women and diversity. She wrote and successfully fought for the passage of legislation that guarantees women and minorities are included in all federal health trials, established the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and secured the first $500 million in federal funding for breast cancer research at the NIH. Slaughter also co-authored the landmark Violence Against Women Act to reduce domestic violence. As longtime co-chair of the bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force, Slaughter led the multi-year effort to secure more than $1.2 billion for Great Lakes preservation and restoration. In 2006, after learning that 80 percent of Americans killed in the Iraq War due to upper body wounds could have survived with adequate body armor, Slaughter started a years-long effort to improve body armor safety standards. In 2009, she secured the recall and replacement of 16,000 pieces of unsafe body armor from the front lines. Throughout her time in Congress, Slaughter fought to ensure equal access to quality education for all Americans. Heidi R. Macpherson, President of The College at Brockport, said in a statement, “Congresswoman Louise Slaughter spent her life fighting for the people she represented. She was a tireless advocate for affordable education and a great friend to SUNY and The College at Brockport. The Funeral Service celebrating the life of the congresswoman was held March 23 at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. Area players chosen for Bowman Cup by Warren Kozireski The 14th annual Scotty Bowman Showcase took place on March 22 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo and seven area high school hockey players were chosen to represent the Rochester area. The Scotty Bowman Showcase consists of all-star hockey games between high school-aged players from the Buffalo and Rochester areas. The first game featured high school juniors from the two cities facing off against one another for the Tim Horton Memorial Cup. Hilton forwards Sam DiPasquale and Nate Higgins with goaltender Mason Burdick plus Churchville-Chili defenseman Matt Kotsch were along the junior roster. DiPasquale finished the 2017-18 season second on the Cadets in goals (9) and third in points (16) while Higgins more than doubled his goals and points totals from his sophomore campaign and led the team in both categories

Bowman was in attendance to present the Bowman Cup to the victorious senior team. Brockport’s Andrew Harley was selected for the squad after he led the league in scoring with 40 goals and 71 points in just 20 games. He was joined on the senior roster by Churchville-Chili forwards Jordan Alves and Zachary Olsen. Alves scored eight goals and had 21 points for the Saints this past year while Olsen tied for the team lead with 15 goals and was third in scoring with 24 points.

Hilton grad Yianni Diakomihalis wins NCAA Division I Championship Yianni Diakomihalis, a 2017 Hilton graduate and freshman at Cornell University, won the 141-pound division at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on Saturday, March 17. Diakomihalis, the No. 3 seed, used a fourpoint cradle in the final seconds to defeat No. 1 seed Wyoming’s Bryce Meredith with
a 7-4 decision. Diakomihalis trailed 4-3 before the takedown. Diakomihalis is the second national champion for Cornell. He finishes the year with a 38-1 record.
