Terry West said he had studied the village’s comprehensive plan and felt the Mavis store is not part of the “good

parking in the plaza and noted there are two repair/tire shops in the village and, “fifteen tire shops in a ten mile radius (of Spencerport).” Resident James White said he is also concerned the Mavis store might saturate the market and questioned the environmental impact if the store is not successful and ends up closing. “We would be left with a specialized empty building,” White said. “I’m concerned it’s just not the right thing for our village.” The Spencerport Planning Board is acting as lead agency for the project and on March 3 determined that the Mavis store may result in “significant adverse environmental impacts,” including noise, traffic and potential conflict with the village’s comprehensive plan. The determination set in motion the scoping process currently underway and which will result in a final scope outlining potential environmental impacts to be addressed in a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). Planning Board members will continue to accept written comments by the public regarding the Draft Scoping Document through May 7. Comments can be mailed to the Village of Spencerport Planning Board, 27 West Avenue, Spencerport, NY 14559.

C-C student photographer chosen for summer internship Student photographer Abby Gutowski will be spending a portion of her summer documenting dayto-day activities at Writers & Books’ SummerWrite youth workshops. The Churchville-Chili High School sophomore was chosen for the photography internship, usually reserved for college students, on the basis of her impressive resume, presentation and portfolio. SummerWrite is a nineweek program that offers over 70 camps for young
people, ages 5-18, focusing on the art of reading and writing. As the program photographer, Gutowski will work for several hours, twice a week, from June 29 to August 28. Her photos will be used on social media and in a variety of marketing communications.
Gutowski is excited about the opportunity. “I’m particularly interested in pursuing a career in photojournalism. This is a chance to learn and get experience, while I am doing what I love.” Gutowski’s work has been shown recently at
Image City Photography Gallery’s “Through the Student Lens” photography show, and at the 2015 Rochester-Finger Lakes Middle & High School Art Exhibition, hosted by RIT at the Bevier Gallery in February. Provided information

Seymour Library breaks ground on Local History Room by Grace Griffee
The Local History Room is made possible by the New York State Education Department’s Public Library Construction Grant, which is funded through aid allocated by the New York State Legislature, and through community member donations. “This is well-spent public money,” said Senator Joe Robach. “We have a great library system in Monroe County and this addition will serve the community for a long time to come.” The Local History Room is due to be completed by midOctober in time for the Seymour Library Annual After Hours Fundraiser, held this year on Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m. The event features music, hors d’oeuvres and wine. For more information, visit seymourlibraryweb. org.

Seymour Library staff and volunteers, along with local dignitaries dug shovels into the ground on April 18, the last day of National Library Week, at the site of what will be the Local History Room addition. The addition will house artifacts and materials from the library’s current collection. New display cases will offer a space to local history museums and organizations within the three communities – Brockport, Clarkson and Sweden – to display artifacts archived in their collections. It will provide a space to house presentation equipment to facilitate lectures and programming. And it will have a book scanner and digital media to encourage the community to not only read about local history, but also interact with it.

a special feature of Westside News Inc. offered exclusively to advertisers.
Creative spirit turns talents into works of artistic expression Furniture from antique to modern, industrial to midcentury, hand-painted pieces and authentic Asian home decor, along with her husband’s hand carved custom walking sticks are offered at the “Anita’s Dream,” five stores located on the lower level in The Shops on West Ridge, 3200 West Ridge Road in Greece. Anita’s dream was found in 2003 by Anita CeramePalozzi, an artist from Spencerport. She came from the world of Wall Street finance to having survived cancer in 2001. During her journey and as part of her therapy she discovered her ability to paint and create. “I now know that my cancer was truly a gift, for not only had I not stopped to smell the flowers, I hadn’t even noticed that they were there. Now, I paint them!” Her “Artistic Dream” is to see the beauty in God’s world and to capture it in her work. Her “Altruistic Dream” is to see a cancer cure in her lifetime by donating 10 percent of all profits to cancer Research.
Thank You, Strong West We want to thank Strong West for honoring us as volunteers recently. All volunteers received goodie bags and the ER staff gave us candy bars. There were bouquets of flowers at our desks and every staff member smiled and thanked us for volunteering. Special thanks to Jill Martin. No doubt about it, Strong West, you are a class act and we are so grateful you are here.

Suburban News North and South Editions - April 26, 2015 7 In 2005 she was chosen to be one of the artists for an international card company, Kathy’s Care Cards. She works along with her husband, Dominic, who is a wood carver and antique restoration artist. Her works include acrylics on glass and furniture, textured papers and the artistic use of fabrics but she is best known for her line of one-ofa-kind handmade custom lampshades, which are in some of Rochester’s finest homes and businesses. In fact, many of her clientele know her as “The Lampshade Lady.” Her slogan “ ... More than Gifts ... Works of Art ... Tomorrow’s Heirlooms” is indicative of her unique work. As an artist she is available by appointment for individual and corporate commissioned work and murals. As a cancer survivor she is always available for emotional support to anyone who needs her. ‘Tis the season - for lambs
Holley family continues to breed rare sheep with great success by Grace Griffee Spring has finally sprung and at the Drechsel farm in Holley that means lambs and plenty of them. Both Drechsel children, Claudia, a 10th grader at Holley Middle School/High School, and Andrew, a sixth grader at Holley Elementary School, have participated in the Youth Conservationist Program, which enables young people to experience the joys and responsibilities of conserving heritage wool sheep breeds. Applicants must write an essay about themselves and their experience with animals, explain their interest in a specific breed of sheep, and answer the question, “Why would I like to help preserve a heritage breed sheep?” They must also include a letter of recommendation from their 4-H advisor, veterinarian, teacher or clergy. Two years ago, Claudia won Netty, a Navajo Churro, through the program. The breed is on the threatened list with fewer than 1,000 registered annually. Netty gave birth to two lambs, Elsa and Anna, last year and is due to lamb again very soon. New owners receive their ewe at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in early May and are required to breed the ewe to a registered ram in the fall. Andrew followed in his sister’s footsteps and was awarded a Hog Island sheep, Reba, at last year’s festival. “He received her from a previous winner,” said his mom, Trina. “So the program tends to have previous winners give back to help continue promoting rare breeds.” The Drechsel family plans to donate a lamb back to the program as well. Andrew said he requested a Hog Island because of the breed’s interesting history. According to the Hog Island Sheep Breeders Association, Hog Island is a barrier island off the Eastern Shore of Virginia. About 200 years ago a flock of sheep was established on the island using sheep of British origin. The sheep of Hog Island evolved in response to the island’s natural selection for hardiness and foraging ability. Hog Island sheep are one of the few populations of feral sheep in the United States and are on the critical list with fewer than 200 registered annually. Fortunately, the Drechsel’s friends, the Trembley family, have a farm in Albion and were able to obtain a flock of Hog Is-

(Follow them on Facebook at “Barnfield Farm on Johnny Cake Lane.”) Reba was sent there to breed and gave birth to one ram lamb that Andrew named Hurley. “We will probably find a home for the lamb so he can be bred with other stock,” said Trina. The Drechsels also have Lincoln Longwool sheep, another heritage breed that is part of the Livestock Conservancy. Hazel, one of Claudia’s sheep, gave birth to a ram lamb this spring named Basil. Andrew’s Lincoln Longwool, Juniper, had twin girls, Kate and Juliet, a week after the others were born. In May, Andrew will be sharing the story of his sheep at the Annual Orleans County Conservation Field Days at the 4H Fairgrounds where sixth graders from Orleans County will come to learn about various conservation topics. The event is organized by the 4-H Youth Development Program of Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension. For information, visit cceorleans.org.

Sometimes accidents happen, and time may pass before they’re discovered. But when you purchase the STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet & cushion system, you’re armed with a breathable moisture barrier on the STAINMASTER® carpet cushion that helps prevent spills from penetrating the padding and subfloor, allowing for more thorough cleaning which reduces lingering odors. To realize this benefit, you must purchase STAINMASTER® carpet cushion.
ReLeASeS pet hAiR
STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet uses proprietary technologies and chemistries applied to the carpet that reduce the force of attraction between pet hair and the carpet, allowing the hair to be more easily removed with normal vacuuming. And anyone with a German shepherd can tell you that’s a breakthrough.

Plotting the future
One very important consideration when preplanning a funeral is where the remains will be buried, entombed, or scattered. In the short time between the death and burial of a loved one, many family members find themselves rushing to purchase a cemetery plot or grave, often without careful thought or a personal visit to the site. That is why it is in the family’s best interest to purchase cemetery plots before they are needed. When doing so, consider the location
of the cemetery and what type of monuments or memorials it allows. Bear in mind that all veterans are entitled to free burial in a national cemetery and a grave marker, as are their spouses and dependent children. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Homer Lowell Marple of Hilton; sisters, Annette Marple of Lubbock, TX, and Harriette (Philip) Greaser of Albion, NY; brothers, Donald Wilson of Madison, AL, Robert (Bonnie) Wilson of Street, MD, and Calvin (Elizabeth) Wilson of Pittsburgh, PA; daughters, Taimi (Michael Holm) Marple and Amy Lunn; and her son, Douglas Marple; grandchildren, Benjamin Franklin Marple, Nile Douglas Marple, Arthur Lowell Lunn, Albert Ian Lunn; great-grandson, Benjamin Forrest Marple; Lorie J. Meyer Memorial Hospital Nursing School in fall 1942 and became a member of the United States Nursing Cadet Corps; received her Registered Nurse degree 1945 and a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Buffalo, 1947. After her marriage, she worked at University of Michigan Hospital, Canandaigua Veterans Hospital, Arnold Gregory Hospital in Albion, NY and taught nursing at BOCES Vocational School, Spencerport, NY. She loved to work, declaring “Work is more fun than fun!” Many happy years were spent there and she was key in building the Co-op community. Ellen enjoyed listening to people, sharing their joys and supporting them in their times of need. She was forever interested and curious. Always looking outward, even to the end, she was truly interested in people, health, world events, artistry, education, music, opera, and ideas. She was a lover of American History and had an eye for all things beautiful-an intellectual and artist at heart. Some of her happiest times were spent at the Wilson Family Farmhouse in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. She believed home should be a shelter from the world and created a sacred haven of security and serenity. If It's Not A Dream Offer
After many months of searching, you have found your ideal house. You want to give the impression that you are serious without appearing to be too eager. What should you do? In the marketplace, "money talks." There is no absolute rule about how much "good-faith" deposit you should put down - but it is a tool to make your point with the seller. The typical $1,000 will hold many homes for you, except in larger-home markets where it may be critical for you to show that you are a serious and able buyer quickly. You don't want to make a deposit that is too large in case there is a problem getting your money back, but if your offer is substantially below the asking price, a larger deposit - $5,000 or $10,000 - might influence the seller. If you make a low deposit with your offer, be sure to provide for an increased deposit when the offer is accepted or upon removal of the contingencies. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.
