‘Tis the season - for lambs

Holley family continues to breed rare sheep with great success by Grace Griffee Spring has finally sprung and at the Drechsel farm in Holley that means lambs and plenty of them. Both Drechsel children, Claudia, a 10th grader at Holley Middle School/High School, and Andrew, a sixth grader at Holley Elementary School, have participated in the Youth Conservationist Program, which enables young people to experience the joys and responsibilities of conserving heritage wool sheep breeds. Applicants must write an essay about themselves and their experience with animals, explain their interest in a specific breed of sheep, and answer the question, “Why would I like to help preserve a heritage breed sheep?” They must also include a letter of recommendation from their 4-H advisor, veterinarian, teacher or clergy. Two years ago, Claudia won Netty, a Navajo Churro, through the program. The breed is on the threatened list with fewer than 1,000 registered annually. Netty gave birth to two lambs, Elsa and Anna, last year and is due to lamb again very soon. New owners receive their ewe at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in early May and are required to breed the ewe to a registered ram in the fall. Andrew followed in his sister’s footsteps and was awarded a Hog Island sheep, Reba, at last year’s festival. “He received her from a previous winner,” said his mom, Trina. “So the program tends to have previous winners give back to help continue promoting rare breeds.” The Drechsel family plans to donate a lamb back to the program as well. Andrew said he requested a Hog Island because of the breed’s interesting history. According to the Hog Island Sheep Breeders Association, Hog Island is a barrier island off the Eastern Shore of Virginia. About 200 years ago a flock of sheep was established on the island using sheep of British origin. The sheep of Hog Island evolved in response to the island’s natural selection for hardiness and foraging ability. Hog Island sheep are one of the few populations of feral sheep in the United States and are on the critical list with fewer than 200 registered annually. Fortunately, the Drechsel’s friends, the Trembley family, have a farm in Albion and were able to obtain a flock of Hog Is-

(Follow them on Facebook at “Barnfield Farm on Johnny Cake Lane.”) Reba was sent there to breed and gave birth to one ram lamb that Andrew named Hurley. “We will probably find a home for the lamb so he can be bred with other stock,” said Trina. The Drechsels also have Lincoln Longwool sheep, another heritage breed that is part of the Livestock Conservancy. Hazel, one of Claudia’s sheep, gave birth to a ram lamb this spring named Basil. Andrew’s Lincoln Longwool, Juniper, had twin girls, Kate and Juliet, a week after the others were born. In May, Andrew will be sharing the story of his sheep at the Annual Orleans County Conservation Field Days at the 4H Fairgrounds where sixth graders from Orleans County will come to learn about various conservation topics. The event is organized by the 4-H Youth Development Program of Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension. For information, visit cceorleans.org.

Extra Mile Award presented Hamlin’s 2014 Extra Mile Award was given to Dave Maynard, Hamlin Dog Control Officer in recognition of his tireless dedication serving as the Town of Hamlin Dog Control Officer. Due to his love for these animals, he has gone above and beyond normal duties, expanding the dog shelter, creating a Facebook page, organizing events like adoption days, fundraisers, pet parades, and supply drives. He has also developed relationships with The Mia Foundation, PAWS, Rochester Animal Shelter and dog control officers in other communities. The love and time he devotes to the animals and the shelter has made a positive impact on the residents and pets not only in our community but in the whole United States, according to Extra Mile Committee members. Seymour Library breaks ground on Local History Room by Grace Griffee Seymour Library staff and volunteers, along with local dignitaries dug shovels into the ground on April 18, the last day of National Library Week, at the site of what will be the Local History Room addition. The addition will house artifacts and materials from the library’s current collection. New display cases will offer a space to local history museums and organizations within the three communities – Brockport, Clarkson and Sweden – to display artifacts archived in their collections. It will provide a space to house presentation equipment to facilitate lectures and programming. And it will have a book scanner and digital media to encourage the community to not only read about local history, but also interact with it.

The Local History Room is made possible by the New York State Education Department’s Public Library Construction Grant, which is funded through aid allocated by the New York State Legislature, and through community member donations. “This is well-spent public money,” said Senator Joe Robach. “We have a great library system in Monroe County and this addition will serve the community for a long time to come.” The Local History Room is due to be completed by midOctober in time for the Seymour Library Annual After Hours Fundraiser, held this year on Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m. The event features music, hors d’oeuvres and wine. Winter College Sports Honors update by Warren Kozireski •Hilton grad Heather Hebert was named Third Team AllSUNYAC in women’s basketball after her junior season with Oswego •The College at Brockport’s women’s basketball forward Olivia Suhr was a First Team All-SUNYAC choice while Greece native Dana Cohan was named to the Second Team at guard for Geneseo. •Clifton Lylerly and Patrick Modzelewski were both Third Team All-SUNYAC selections in men’s basketball for the College at Brockport. •Roberts Wesleyan senior Marissa Sell (Brockport) and Lucy Covley have been named NCCAA All-Americans after helping Roberts Wesleyan finish the season with an impressive 20-7 overall record. Sell was named to the First Team after averaging a double-double this season as she surpassed both 1,000 career points and rebounds. The forward ended the year averaging 15.0 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. Covley, a freshman, was named to the Second Team as she finished second on the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game. The guard hit 68 of 191 three-point shots on the year, shooting 35.6 percent from beyond the arc. Sell, Covley, Samantha Courtney, and Brooke Fields were all named to the All-Region First Team while Necedah James and Carneisha Henry (Hilton) earned Honorable Mention. Sell was named the region's Player of the Year and head coach Bob Segave was named Coach of the Year after guiding the team to a 20-7 overall record this past year. In addition, Sell was named First Team All-East Coast Conference and Courtney earned Honorable Mention. Courtney finished third on the team with 11.7 points per game and was second in rebounding with 7.0 rebounds per game. She led the team with 49 blocked shots. Sell also was named the 2015 Kathy Freese Award winner by the NCCAA, presented annually to an outstanding women’s basketball student-athlete who demonstrates character, integrity, and Christian service. The award is named in honor of Kathy Freese, who served as head women’s basketball coach at Cedarville (Ohio) from 1991 through 2001.

•Redhawks senior forward Isaac Medeiros made the AllEast Coast Conference Second Team in men’s basketball. He led Roberts with 15.2 points per game while averaging 6.6 rebounds and a team-best 21 blocks. He also was named All-NCCAA First Team All-American. The trio of Tyrel Dixon, Marcus Gooding, and Kevin Madiamba all received NCCAA Honorable Mention. •College at Brockport senior Lexi King and junior Lily Jagodzinski tied for second place in floor exercise and sophomore Jen Sklenar finished tied for second place on the balance beam as three of nine All-America Awards on the final day of competition at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championship. The top six gymnasts in each event were named firstteam All-America and the 7-12 place finishers were named second-team All-America. Sklenar was the top Brockport finisher on the balance beam with a 9.70 to finish second overall earning first-team All-America honors. Stephanie Schuler earned three All-America awards tying for seventh place on the vault (9.65), tying for eighth on uneven bars (9.75) and placing 12th (9.075) on the balance beam. Amanda Carney was tied for third on vault with a 9.675 for first-team All-America honors while King earned second-team honors tying for 12th with a 9.60 score. Brittany Vasile also took home secondteam honors with a tie for 11th place with a 9.625 score on floor exercise. •College at Brockport junior Chase Nieuwendyk was selected as a 2015 CCM Division II-III Men's Hockey AllAmerican, as he earned Third-Team East honors after he led the team in scoring with 30 points on 18 goals and 12 assists. •Golden Eagle senior Samuel Taft finished seventh in the heptathlon to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships at Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Senior Dorian Hayden was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Year as he was voted on by SUNYAC coaches and earned All-SUNYAC First-Team honors as he won the SUNYAC Championship in the 400-meter dash in 49.64 seconds.

Hawks fall to Attica by Warren Kozireski Holley sophomore Anna Brasted had two RBIs and two runs scored, but Attica plated 16 runs in the top of the seventh inning to blow open their 35-10 win in varsity softball. The Hawks scored four times in the first inning to take their only lead of the game. Brooklyn Bartholomew and Tabitha Swift began the rally with singles before Brasted drove in the first run with a single. Madison Papaj then reached on an error scoring both Swift and Brasted. Brianna Vanameron followed with an RBI single for the fourth run. Attica scored six times in the second inning to take a 10-4 lead, but the Hawks bounced back in their half of the inning to keep the game close. Bailey Papaj reached on a one-out error and went to second on a fielder’s choice. Swift had a clutch two-out RBI single to center for the first run of the inning. Brasted reached on an error putting runners at first and second before Madison Papaj also reached on an error allowing Swift to score and leaving runners on the corners. Madison Papaj and Brasted then pulled off a double steal with Brasted scoring and Papaj later scoring on a throwing error as she advanced to third on the throw home. After Attica made it 14-8 in the third, the Hawks scored their final two runs in the bottom of the inning. Brianna Barber reached second on an error and went to third on a single by Bailey Papaj, who then stole second. Bartholomew knocked in Barber with a single and Brasted’s two-out single later in the inning plated the final run of the game for Holley. Attica scored 21 runs over the final four innings to drop the Hawks to 0-3 in the young season.

Holley Board adopts proposed budget with zero tax increase During its April 13 board meeting, the Holley Board of Education adopted a $23,300,000 budget for the 2015-16 school year. If approved, the plan will result in zero tax levy increase to taxpayers, according to a district spokesperson. When Holley residents go to the polls on May 19, they will be asked to vote on two additional propositions. The first is for the purchase of two full-size school buses, one wheelchair bus and one 30-passenger school bus at a cost not to exceed $355,000. The second authorizes the district to raise $108,072 to be used in support of maintenance and operations of the Community Free Library. A public hearing on the budget and propositions is scheduled for

May 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board Room located in the District Office. In addition, residents will be voting on three Board of Education seats. On Wednesday, May 6, the Clarkson Historical Society will present a talk by Brockport resident and local gardener Gary Skoog, who has lived in Brockport with his wife, artist Lori Skoog, since the 1960s. Both are well known in the community. Many of us know how to garden, but most of us don’t know much about its history. Gary has also been involved with the Greater Brockport Development Corporation since its formation in 2002, whose overall goal is to promote and market the greater Brockport area to prospective businesses, and to promote tourism to this region. This has also included involvement with historic preservation in a village that has excelled in preserving its architectural heritage as The Victorian Village on the Erie Canal. The presentation will be at 7 p.m. at the Clarkson Academy, 8343 Ridge Road. It is free and open to the public. Brockport 2015-2016 proposed school budget hearing May 5 The Brockport Central School District Board of Education will present its proposed budget for the 20152016 school year at a public hearing on Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Fred W. Hill School Cafetorium. The ballot includes two propositions: •Proposition 1 - The $75,946,267 proposed budget projects an estimated 0.89% tax rate increase. The budget was balanced utilizing $2,975,000 of fund balance and reserves and a tax levy increase of 1.89%, which is less than Brockport’s tax levy limit (cap) of 2.48%. •Proposition 2 - Bus Proposition of $1,200,200 includes purchasing 13 buses and trading in 10. The state aid ratio is 90%, making the net local share $9,232 per bus. Voting on these propositions and election of one Board of Education Trustee position will be held May 19, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Technology and Training Center, Building 800, on the Brockport Central School District campus. The Poppy Program is important recognition Each year during the month of May, American Legion Auxiliary members distribute red crepe paper poppies in exchange for donations. The donations assist disabled veterans, their families, VA hospitals and starting this year active military in need of assistance. The two presented a slide program on sledge (or sled) hockey, developed in Sweden for disabled athletes in the 1960s. It is a paraolympic sport. The Zyras are working to develop a program in the Rochester area where eventually teams of different age levels would compete. At this beginning stage, everyone including some able bodied folks, are enjoying the game. Using modified sticks and sleds, players are quite agile and speedy. Village of Brockport TRASH COLLECTION NOTICE

As students prepare to move out at the end of the year, refuse left behind is an issue that Village residents have dealt with on an annual basis. This year, the Village is taking a proactive stance, to ensure that the community will remain safe and sanitary during the move out period. Beginning Monday, May 12, 2015 Village Code Enforcement Officers will begin patrolling neighborhoods to make note of addresses where refuse items are being piled up. At the end of each property’s regular garbage collection day, the Village of Brockport Department of Public Works will be making rounds to clean up any items left behind. Please note that this is not a free pick up. The property owner will be billed for the collection of any refuse by the Department of Public Works. To ensure this does not take place, contact your refuse collection company to verify what they will pick up and make sure any items left behind are brought back from the road. Please keep all refuse in containers with adequately sealed lids and ensure that all refuse is placed neatly at the curb for collection. Do not place any refuse in the road or block any sidewalks. •Clement, Joseph Jr., age 80, of Rochester, and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, died April 10, 2015 in Florida. He was preceded in death by siblings Leon, Gerald, Robert and Ethel. He is survived by sister Thelma Manning and brother Wallace (Betsy). Surviving are his loving wife Margaret Ann DeMay Sapere; daughters, Ann Renee (Peter) Wilsey, Jill (Dean) Crocker, and son Joseph Clement III (Linda Parkes). He was previously marred to Norma Roscoe. He has five adult step children: Patricia (Phil) Sapere Sacchitella, Lynn (Joe) Ruffino, Dr. Frank (Audrey) Sapere, Scott Sapere, and Daryn (Christina) Sapere. He has five grandchildren and ten step-grandchildren. He was a charter member of the Spencerport Rotary, inducted into the Spencerport Athletic Hall of Fame, member of Phi Delta Kappa and the American Legion. He retired in 1992, after serving for eighteen years as superintendent of schools in Spencerport. His Funeral Mass was held April 18 at Church of the Assumption, Fairport. •Sidari, Frank P. Sr., age 90, died April 18, 2015 in the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence following a brief illness. As part of the last Mounted Cavalry Division in WWII, Frank served as an Infantryman and Rifleman from 1943-1046 in the 124th Cavalry in the China-Burma-India Theater. Following his Military Service, Frank worked as a Union Carpenter and then as the Albion Code Enforcement Officer. For over 75 years, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving 30 plus years as Scoutmaster for Troop #164. Frank was a member of Holy Family Parish, the Albion VFW, and the Hook & Ladder Company of the Albion Fire Department. Mr. Sidari was predeceased by his brother Leonard Sidari and his sisters Jane Ciccoline and Eleanor Irwin. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Jane; his sons, Bruce (Carolyn) Sidari of Albion, Frank (Vicky) Sidari, Jr. of Florida, Michael (Brenda) Sidari of Medina; his brother, Rocco Sidari of Albion; his sisters, Santa Calles of Albion, Louise Felso of Lyndonville; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. His Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 24 in Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph’s Cemetery. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Homer Lowell Marple of Hilton; sisters, Annette Marple of Lubbock, TX, and Harriette (Philip) Greaser of Albion, NY; brothers, Donald Wilson of Madison, AL, Robert (Bonnie) Wilson of Street, MD, and Calvin (Elizabeth) Wilson of Pittsburgh, PA; daughters, Taimi (Michael Holm) Marple and Amy Lunn; and her son, Douglas Marple; grandchildren, Benjamin Franklin Marple, Nile Douglas Marple, Arthur Lowell Lunn, Albert Ian Lunn; great-grandson, Benjamin Forrest Marple; Lorie J. Marple, A. Russell Lunn and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Ellen was born December 29, 1924 in Hudson Falls, NY. She was a truly remarkable person--mature as a young person beyond her years, caring and compassionate, quick to recognize a need, ready and able to undertake many endeavors, and to do so happily. She was an excellent student, graduating third highest in her class. She had a happy disposition and loved to kid her younger siblings. She entered the Edward J. Meyer Memorial Hospital Nursing School in fall 1942 and became a member of the United States Nursing Cadet Corps; received her Registered Nurse degree 1945 and a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Buffalo, 1947. After her marriage, she worked at University of Michigan Hospital, Canandaigua Veterans Hospital, Arnold Gregory Hospital in Albion, NY and taught nursing at BOCES Vocational School, Spencerport, NY. After retirement, she partnered with Homer to establish the Craft Antique Co-op in Hilton over the next two decades. She loved to work, declaring “Work is more fun than fun!” Many happy years were spent there and she was key in building the Co-op community. Ellen enjoyed listening to people, sharing their joys and supporting them in their times of need. She was forever interested and curious. Always looking outward, even to the end, she was truly interested in people, health, world events, artistry, education, music, opera, and ideas. She was a lover of American History and had an eye for all things beautiful-an intellectual and artist at heart. Some of her happiest times were spent at the Wilson Family Farmhouse in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. She believed in family as the prime value and taught her children the importance of family relationships, traditions and celebrations. She believed home should be a shelter from the world and created a sacred haven of security and serenity. the funds to be raised to meet the estimated expenditures of the School District in the form commonly known as the school district budget.” AND NOTICE IS ALSO HEREBY GIVEN, that absentee ballots are available to persons who are otherwise qualified to vote (18 years of age, a District resident for at least 30 days, and a U.S. citizen) but who will be unable to appear at the election because of vacation outside the county; due to hospitalization, illness or physical disability; because their duties, occupation, business or studies require them to be outside the county on the day of the vote; because they will be detained in jail or confined in prison on the day of the vote; or because they are the spouse, parent or child of an individual qualified to vote as an absentee voter and they will be unable to be present for the vote by reason of accompanying or being with said individual for any of the foregoing reasons. SummerWrite is a nine-week program that offers over 70 camps for young people, ages 5-18, focusing on the art of reading and writing. As the program photographer, Gutowski will work for several hours, twice a week, from June 29 to August 28. Her photos will be used on social media and in a variety of marketing communications. Gutowski is excited about the opportunity. “I’m particularly interested in pursuing a career in photojournalism.
