Young teen entrepreneur learns, earns, and gives back His vision: Be the fourth generation running the family farm by Doug Hickerson Mateo Mortellaro was eight years old when he started his vegetable business by pulling his red wagon full of produce to sell in his Brockport neighborhood. Now, at 14, he has given $4,000 from his sales to an orphanage in Colombia. And his business, “Red Wagon Farms,” took a major step on July 19 by selling for the first time at the Farmers Market in Brockport. The whole Mortellaro family was present to make Mateo’s first venture at the Farmers Market a success. Mateo and his eleven-year-old brother, Tiago, were adopted as infants from an orphanage in Bogata, Colombia. Their father, Matt Mortellaro, owns a large third-generation family farm with his brother near Elba, named G. Mortellaro & Sons, Inc. Mateo’s mother, Stephanie Mortellaro, is a certified Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) with the National Yoga Alliance. She teaches at her local practice and at various regional venues and national institutes. The Mortellaros have lived in Brockport going on 20 years. Starting with a red wagon at eight years old “My family is a farming family, and I took to it at a very young age,” Mateo said. His father gave him one-quarter of an acre at the farm to grow his own vegetables. Mateo praises his brother for his help with the crops. At about eight years old, “I decid- Mateo Mortellaro will be a ed it would be a great freshman at Brockport High idea to give back a little School in the fall. He started his bit to the orphanage business, Red Wagon Farms, where I was adopted.” when he was 8 years old. To do so, he began selling his vegetables out of a red wagon he pulled around his neighborhood near Brockport Middle School. The same red wagon filled with vegetables, now his business logo, was in front of the Farmers Market tent as part of the display. Last year the whole family traveled to the Bogota CRAN Orphanage to present a $3,000 check, plus $1,000 worth of toys and supplies. Coming primarily

from vegetable sales, the sum also included money Mateo earned doing odd jobs plus funds his mother helped to raise at her yoga classes. Mateo plans to keep giving to the orphanage. He has also started a Cloud web site to support the cause: Gofundme/ wm9jfc. Learning at the Simon Business School A major advance for the enterprising Mateo was his participation last year at the Young Entrepreneurs Academy at the University of Rochester Simon Business School. Attending classes for a couple of hours each week through the year, he was instructed by business people, lawyers, accountants, and went on field trips to various businesses. “A draft designer I hired through the class helped me make my designs,” Mateo said. Mentors also helped with his business plan. At the end of the year students had to present their new business ideas to a panel of business people to request funding. Mateo asked for $550 and he was awarded $600 after his presentation. He is also now certified as DBA (Doing Business As). A vision for the future With this early start in the agricultural business, the rising high school freshman was asked if he intended to make it his life’s work. “Yes, I want to inherit my dad’s farm,” Mateo answered immediately. “And, I want to attend Cornell University to study agriculture.” He was also asked if he had a role model and mentor. “That would definitely have to be my dad.” Dad’s wisdom on farming and Mateo’s possible career Matt Mortellaro reflected on the nature of farming and Mateo’s possible career. “Over the course of 20 years, you experience both prosperity and hardship,” he mused about his 300-acre corporate farm which is thriving in the third generation. In the long view, “The future is bright for agriculture,” he said. “There is a bourgeoning global population that needs to be fed, and an awakening among Americans about dietary choices, with (increased demands for) fresh fruits and vegetables. It bodes well.” About his sons, he said, “I think it would be wonderful if either one or both decided to go into agriculture.” But, “They can do whatever they want,” Mortellaro added, emphasizing the importance of free personal choice for a life’s career. “Regardless of what Mateo

But, we sold out of almost everything. We greeted old acquaintances and met new people. It was great, a really pleasant surprise. We look forward to returning.”

Get out & grow! by Kristina Gabalski

Time to tackle the mid-season to-do list by Kristina Gabalski The rush of spring clean up and planting is behind us and now that summer is in full swing, it’s a time to really enjoy the beauty and bounty of your home garden and landscape. It’s also important, however, to continue to work at maintaining your plantings and check regularly for insect and disease problems. This has been a frustrating year for garden maintenance for me. The frequent rounds of heavy rains have meant that I never really finished planting my vegetable garden and the downpours have typically come at the same moment I have a few precious minutes of free time for the garden. DENNIS A. PELLETIER

Brianna Borrelli

Brianna Borelli has shown immense strength and integrity in her young life that inspires her classmates, teachers, counselor and all those around her. The Our Lady of Mercy High School senior is a member of the National Honor Society, and Student Council. Perhaps most notably, she has been recognized for her involvement in the DECA club, placing in the top 10 in the world on her project and presentation. She also participates in dance and basketball, while serving on the campus ministry board and maintaining a part-time job. Academically, Brianna has done an outstanding job, successfully completing eight AP courses. Her HS counselor and nominator Jane Searl said of Brianna, “She is smart, principled, funny, creative, and has a most generous spirit.” Brianna has achieved these accomplishments while dealing with a physical disability. In ninth grade, she began to lose her hearing, and doctors were unable to identify the source. By the fall of her sophomore year, she was considered deaf and fitted with two hearing aids. Without any accommodations, Brianna has managed to thrive in school with a stellar academic record and extracurricular pursuits. Searl concluded, “At first glance, Brianna may appear too good to be true…wholesome, athletic, intelligent and with more grit than most adults could ever muster. Let me assure you that she is the ‘real deal’.” A Spencerport resident, Brianna is the daughter of Kelly Borelli.

michael fuino

Tyler Rist

Tyler Rist exemplifies kindness, compassion and humility. The junior at Spencerport High School ranks third in his class, works part time, volunteers, and personifies what it means to approach every day with your best. SHS counselor Bonnie Frank said in her nomination of Tyler, “He is quiet and unassuming, yet the power house you would never see coming.” An example of his compassion would be two customers writing letters to his part-time employer, Wegmans, commending him on a job well done. The unique part of this is that he had only been working there a few months. Another example is that he wanted to reach out to the patients at Golisano’s Children’s Hospital at Strong, where he thought they would enjoy a visit from the SHS FIRST Robotics team of which he is a member. Tyler arranged all the protocols and adult supervision for the Ranger Robotics team to bring the robots for a visit, and lighten their day for a few moments. Tyler exemplifies this thoughtfulness of others with a true understanding of adversity. When he was in middle school, his father and grandfather both passed away, less than 24 hours of each other. Frank said, “Both men played a pivotal role in his life. He is an only child, and has grown up thinking about putting others first and making life better for the community. He understands that life can be over in a flash. I find Tyler to be quite an exceptional young man.” Tyler is the son of Jackie Rist.

Josephine Stein

Michael Fuino has proven to be an outgoing and natural leader, with a commitment to academics, hard work, and community service. The senior at Aquinas Institute is involved in DECA and student recruitment, and plays on the soccer team. It was the latter that impacted his life this year when he experienced a career-ending concussion. This concussion not only impacted Michael athletically, but academically and socially. “In the few months after his concussion, Michael has shown that he is resilient and motivated,” Lindsay Tuschong, his nominator and school counselor, said. “He works hard in physical therapy and also maintains a positive attitude. His grades have not suffered and he is scheduled to attend RIT next fall.” In addition to school, Michael gives his time to volunteering at Foodlink, Salvation Army Red Kettle Foundation, and Empire Revolution Soccer Coaching Clinic. He also works part-time at Wegmans. “Michael has found success in every activity he takes on,” Tuschong added. “He works hard despite the obstacles along the way. He is goal and outcome oriented. He does not waver and will ask for help as needed, and manage the requirements and commitments of every challenge.” A Gates resident, Michael is the son of Eugenia and John Fuino.

Josephine Stein aspires to pursue a career in nursing some day – a field in which she is well-suited. According to her counselor at Churchville-Chili High School, the senior has a warm and attentive personality which would serve her well in this chosen vocation. She also has firsthand knowledge and experience herself in caring for loved ones. “Both of her parents have battled cancer, and her father is currently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis,” counselor Marjorie Rudy shared. “This has meant Josie has taken on an even bigger role in her family, including the leadership she has assumed on her family’s farm.” The black belt and instructor in martial arts, Josie works on her family’s farm driving tractors or trucks and planting and harvesting crops. She accomplishes this while also volunteering to read to children, food drives, and assisting at the local county fair. At school, she assists with the high school administrative team during interviews for teaching staff. “Josie is extremely positive and friendly,” Rudy concluded. “She will be great in the nursing field someday, as she has such a warm and caring personality.” Josie is the daughter of Margaret and Raymond Stein of Churchville.

Shamus Lobene

Alex Thorton

Shamus Lobene strives to challenge himself academically and demonstrates leadership and determination with life’s obstacles along the way. As an honor roll student at Spencerport High School, Shamus is someone his peers look up to and teachers enjoy having in class. His counselor and nominator, Jo Ann Krywy said, “Shamus is an extremely bright young man, who has challenged himself academically and who has elected to embrace opportunities and obstacles that have presented themselves.” One such obstacle has been experiencing a horrific ski accident last year, which left him immobile for weeks. After several surgeries, he began to slowly recover, and regardless of the pain, he remained committed to working with his academic tutors and returning to school as quickly as possible. “His grades never wavered, and he never complained,” Krywy said of the senior. “Where many of us may have felt defeated or overwhelmed, Shamus embraced this challenge as an opportunity to triumph. In addition to academics, Shamus is a valued member of the SHS’s technology crew. He volunteers countless hours during the school day, evenings and weekends to assist with whatever technology needs are required to lend to successful productions, presentations, and performances. “Shamus’ commitment and self-determination exceed all expectations, while his personal attributes and character model an individual that most of us only read about,” Krywy concluded. “Shamus is a treasured volunteer, an outstanding community leader and most importantly, a courageous individual who has inspired us all.” Shamus is the son of James and Jackie Lobene of Spencerport.

Alex Thornton is a wellrounded, active senior at Spencerport High School. He challenges himself with a rigorous academic schedule, successfully being ranked among the top 10 in his class, while pursuing his extracurricular interests. He performs as the first chair trombone in the wind and jazz ensembles; acts and sings in roles in the HS musical productions; and swims on the varsity team. In addition, Alex is actively involved in Boy Scouts, achieving the top rank of Eagle Scout, and volunteers as a lifeguard at school. Alex never hesitates to participate in his interests, despite being diagnosed at a young age with severe food allergies. “In the three years I have known him, he has had two major, life-threatening reactions, where he was rushed to the hospital,” SHS teacher and nominator Sandra McGreevy said. “One time, he was trying on costumes for the school musical, and there must have been trace residue from another person in the fabric. This is a daily threat that he and his family live with. He really can’t eat any food that is not given from home. This life challenge needs to be remembered every day.” Co-nominator and family friend, Corinne Goeke, agreed and said, “The journey for Alex has not been easy. On the outside, he appears to be the typical, well-rounded student. What you don’t see is his daily personal challenge to keep himself safe in a world full of allergens that could put him in the hospital. He is an excellent example of someone who can live in a world that is potentially unsafe for him and can succeed at that life.” Goeke concluded, “Alex has a big future ahead of him and is building the life skills necessary to survive in the world.” Alex is the son of Chris and Brenda Thornton.

All were honored in ceremonies at the Ogden Town Hall, 269 Ogden Center Road, on May 13.

Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh, star of the sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my Heart, to succor me in my necessity. (Make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Westside Challenger Baseball completes fifth season An awards presentation and year-end picnic took place on Saturday, July 18 as Westside Challenger Baseball wrapped up its fifth season. A record 54 players participated every Saturday morning starting the end of May at Nietopski Field at the Town of Sweden Park. What a great season for the players, families, friends, coaches and volunteers. Each game was filled with fun, laughter and camaraderie. The Saturday, June 20 game was played at

Frontier Field. The players and their families were also treated to a Rochester Red Wing game on June 29 as guest of their season ticket holders. After each game, all the players and their families and friends, along with their assisting “buddies” are treated to snacks. The season ended with each player being recognized and presented a Championship Trophy at the Awards Ceremony. There is no charge for any family to have their children with disabilities, ages 5 through 18, play Westside Challenger Baseball because of the generous donations made by: the Rochester Press-Radio Club, Brockport Five Star Bank, Brockport WalMart, Reliant Community Credit Union, Rochester Police Locust Club, Brockport Lions Club, Brockport Kiwanis Club, UR Strong West, Kendall Lions Club, Brockport Rotary Club, Learning Disabilities Association, USA Ultimate Sports and Apparel, Sweden Community Foundation, Ferris-Goodridge Auxiliary, Baxter Health Care, Paul Wheat and the Stetson Club of the Brockport Police Department, Mark Gaisser and Dominos Pizza, and many individual donors. These sponsors cover all the cost including uniforms, equipment, field rental, insurance, food and trophies.

Coach Charlie Hage congratulates Troy Parker on scoring.

Westside Challenger Baseball Players show off their trophies.

Westside Challenger Baseball would not exist without the generous commitment of sponsors. We thank them so much. Thanks also to the players and coaches of the Brockport Bisons Baseball for always being there to serve as “buddies.” Special appreciation to Charlie Hage, Tony Parrino, Joe, Pam and Jill Setak, Westside News, Todd Dobson, Roger Evans, Colby Jones, Anthony Gugino and Photos by Bruce for their continued assistance during the season. Game announcers Kerri Noyes, Karen Zyra, Bev Milner and Susan Myers, along with coaches Steve Noyes, Bob Jones, Darren Zyra, Kate Jacobs and

Mike Myers kept things moving along on the field. Food coordinators Marge and Wayne Zyra were always ready with treats for everyone after each game. Westside Challenger Baseball organizers Jack and Bev Milner, Mike and Susan Myers and Wayne and Marge Zyra have already started planning for next season to provide quality baseball and fun for children with disabilities in the area. Brockport’s Parrino leads Team USA to Silver Medal by Warren Kozireski Brockport High grad, Andy Parrino, stroked a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Team USA overcome a 4-1 deficit and defeat Canada 65 in the Pan American Games baseball semi-finals played in Toronto. The win gave Team USA a berth in the championship game where they lost to Canada 7-6. Parrino entered the first of six preliminary games as a pinch runner late before earning the start at shortstop for the second game. He hit a two-run first inning home run to stake Team USA to an early lead in their 5-2 win over Cuba. He was the only USA player to garner two hits along with two stolen bases in the third preliminary round game - a 5-

3 win over Columbia - and added one hit, one RBI and one run scored in each of two consecutive wins over the Dominican Republic (a home run) and Canada. Overall, he was 9-25 for a .360 batting average (third on the team), tied for second with five runs scored and tied for third with five RBI’s. The former San Diego Padres prospect was traded to Oakland three years ago and has split this season between the majors (17 games) and their Triple A affiliate in Nashville (44 games). Parrino, who turns 30 years old on Halloween, played three years of Division I baseball at LeMoyne College in Syracuse before being drafted by San Diego and turning pro in 2007. He has played in 131 major league games during his career.

According to SHS teacher and band director John Viavattine, Heather exemplifies the meaning of this award and maintains the tradition of the highest standards achieved to garner this recognition. “Heather is not only an outstanding musician but is a role model to our entire Spencerport High School community,” Viavattine said. Fresh Air Fund still seeking host families for summer 2015 This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoying the pure joys of summer in your own backyard. Thousands of volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. It is currently seeking families to give innercity children a Fresh Air experience this summer.

Host families across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from the big city. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Joanne Wales-Smith at 585305-5307 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org. Provided information

RBA to rebrand as Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce Rochester Business Alliance, the chamber of commerce serving the nine-county Finger Lakes region, is pleased to announce its intention to rebrand as the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce effective January 2016. The move to RBA’s chamber roots stemmed from a strategic planning process that started in February of this year. The former Greater Rochester Metro Chamber of Commerce merged with the Industrial Management Council to form Rochester Business Alliance in 2003. RBA President and CEO Bob Duffy said, “Rebranding as the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce helps us more clearly define our mission as an organization that offers advocacy and services to help businesses of all sizes grow and prosper. We have received very positive feedback

about the name change throughout the strategic planning process with input from our board of directors and staff, regional business leaders, not-for-profits, regional chamber of commerce executives, and many others. We are excited about what the future holds for the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce.” Work is now underway to bring the new Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce brand to life with Dixon Schwabl, led by RBA board member Lauren Dixon, acting as the marketing agency for the transformation. RBA staff has worked closely with Dixon Schwabl over the past few months on the rebranding, which includes a new logo, marketing materials, and website. The Greater Rochester Chamber’s updated strategic vision and mission will also

be revealed in the coming months. Nazareth College President and Rochester Business Alliance Chairman Daan Braveman said, “As the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, we plan to work collaboratively with our fellow regional chambers and those across the state to make New York a better place to live, work, and do business while maintaining and enhancing the services we currently offer our members.” Rochester Business Alliance plans to release more details about the rebranding as the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting in December. Brockport Police to outfit officers with body worn cameras

With the acquisition of 18 body worn cameras the Brockport Police Department will be able to outfit each of its 15 full time employees with a personal camera. According to department policy, the cameras are required to be activated when in a situation where a physical or verbal confrontation is likely to occur or in fact is occurring. Nothing precludes an officer from activating the camera at any time they choose, according to a press release from the Brockport Police Department. Guidelines for use noted in the press release read as follows: The cameras will be worn whenever a police officer is on duty. These cameras will not only create better transparency between the police department and the public, but they will also enhance the trust which Chief Daniel Varrenti believes already exists in Brockport regarding its police department. The cameras will allow officers to capture video from their perspective from the moment they get on scene until the scene is secured. Additionally these cameras can also be used to film crime scenes, capture evidence that may be destroyed by inclement weather or other uncontrollable factors, and memorialize events that never would have been captured in the past.

BPD officers tested cameras over a three-month period. The Gates Police Department, which has been using body worn cameras for several months, lent Brockport two cameras during the testing period. One of the two cameras was damaged during an incident. The camera that was damaged will be replaced from the 18 cameras purchased, leaving the Brockport Police Department with two spare cameras, according to the press release. By using an external hard drive to store the data recorded, the Brockport Police Department will avert the fees that companies charge to store data, and will also have the ability to keep the data for years. Any evidence captured on the cameras will immediately be transferred to a compact disk. The police department will retain one copy as evidence, one copy will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office and the third copy will be forwarded to the defendant’s attorney, should an arrest have been made, the press release states. The total cost of all equipment, including the cameras, hard drives and ancillary hardware totaled $7,767 and was paid for through the Federal Asset Forfeiture Funds, according to the press release. One-third of the respondents in a recent survey estimated that they had a 50 percent chance or better of buying recreational real estate in this decade. The study suggests rising consumer confidence and the direction of future buying trends. Preferred locations for recreation properties include beach area, lake areas, mountains, the Caribbean and other tropical areas. Less popular sites are golf and ski-related communities and desert locations. Favorite recreational properties are the traditional detached single-family homes or cabins, resort condominiums and vacant parcels of land that can be used for later construction of a second home. Age, marital status, sex, geographic location and income greatly affect prime choices in recreational property. For example, single males have a significantly higher preference for resort condos and vacant land than single females. The most popular states for second home and recreational purchases are (1) Florida, (2) California, (3) Colorado, (4) North Carolina, (5) Texas, and (6) Arizona.
