Unified Basketball a huge success at Hilton/Kendall Central Schools

by Kristina Gabalski Coaches, school administrators, parents and participants are all singing the praises of Unified Sports - specifically basketball - which for the first time was played at Hilton Central this year.

Hilton Central fielded a unified basketball team with the Kendall Central School District and Michael Giruzzi, CAA, Hilton Central director of physical education and athletics, says unified sports is a partnership between Section V Athletics, the NYS Public High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics that combines approximately equal numbers of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on a sports team for training and competition.

“The purpose is to provide authentic, competitive opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities in an inclusive setting,” he explains.

A main goal of the program was, “To create a whole school environment where authentic social inclusion and learning happens through meaningful activity, providing for respect and dignity for all,” Giruzzi says. “The opportunity for our school and community to come together in this outstanding program was demonstrated throughout the season.”

Response from families and the community was great, Giruzzi observes.

He says the kids and community really came together to rally around this endeavor. “To see our kids working together and the pure joy in their faces as they competed together was extremely powerful.”

Participants in the Kendall Central School District agree. Members of the

School Board of Education recently heard a presentation from Susan Smith, one of the team’s coaches, about the first season.

She said Unified Basketball is an example of how differences can bring people together.

“All the students shined,” Smith explained, “and showed a caring, compassionate nature, traits we attempt to promote in our school community.”

Several parents whose children participated on the Unified Basketball team also attended. Brad Miller said his son, Jason, was on the team. “We went to a game and were blown away by it,” Miller said of watching his son and the team play.

Miller said he was very impressed by the sportsmanship demonstrated by all players. “It really exceeded my expectations. I was impressed by how well it worked. The team played as a team. The games were like a party. The kids were competitive - they played to win, but in the context of sportsmanship. This is what every sporting event should be like. It was beyond what I expected it to be.”

Jason Miller was a star scorer for the team. He said he enjoyed the experience.

“It was really, really fun,” Jason said.

Kendall hopes to continue with unified sports next year.

“I feel lucky I got to coach these kids and work with these families,” Susan Smith said. “It was better than we could have anticipated.”

Michael Giruzzi at Hilton Central says a second season is planned next year. “We are looking to add opportunities at the elementary and the seventh/eighth grade level for unified basketball,” he said.

On June 11, Sue Savard attended the ribbon cutting ceremony of the newly opened 1840 Dulles Inn in Auburn, which was once the home of Allen Macy Dulles, father of Allen Welsh Dulles, Director of the CIA under President Eisenhower and his brother, John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State under President Eisenhower.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was an invitation-only event, and Sue was invited by Marion Chedell Seymour and Dr. James Dulles Seymour. Their mother, Nataline Dulles, was the daughter of Allen Macy Dulles. Their great, great grandfather, James Seymour, was a cofounder of Brockport and instrumental in bringing the Erie Canal through Brockport. He became the first sheriff of Monroe County.

Marion Seymour met Sue when she visited the Emily L. Knapp Museum and Library of Local History on a trip to Brockport last year to discover and share information about her Seymour ancestry.

Approximately 100 people attended the ceremony at which Dr. James D. Seymour gave a brief speech. Also in attendance: Reverend John Vaughn, Executive VP of Auburn Theological Seminary; NYS Assemblyman, Gary D. Finch; Auburn Mayor Michael Quill; 13th District Legislator, Timothy Lattimore; and Dorothy Wickenden, Executive Editor of “The New Yorker.”

Dr. Peter Usowski, CIA Director of the Center for the Study of Intelligence, was the keynote speaker.

At the conclusion of the ribbon cutting ceremony, attendees toured the house lovingly restored to its grander days by current owners, Elizabeth and her husband, Dr. Paul Koenig.

Brockport CSD, UPSEU reach contract agreement Brockport Central School District and the United Public Service Employees Union (UPSEU) have reached an agreement on a new contract.

A tentative settlement agreement was reached during a productive mediation session on May 31, scheduled by the New York State Public Employment Relations Board.

The contract was then put before UPSEU members for ratification on June 10, which passed by a vote of 215-4.

The Brockport Board of Education unanimously approved the agreement during the board meeting on June 15.

Steve Coglitore has been around cars since he was 9, when his father founded LeRoy Motors back in 1967 starting with Chevrolet and Oldsmobile. Steve started in sales in 1984 and worked his way through several different departments at his family’s dealership. He’s worked with GM for years, after LeRoy Motors expanded in 2000. He didn’t make his way to Spurr until 2014, but since then he’s been an integral part of the internet and sales teams.

Sweden resident makes suggestion for future garage and yard sales On Thursday, June 16, my wife and I carefully created signs for our moving sale that was beginning the next day.

That evening, we drove around Sweden Village to post them. We had spent the prior three weeks organizing, labeling and setting up in preparation for the sale.

About an hour into the slow sales on Friday, a customer told me that a majority of our signs (and the signs for a sale on Gary Drive) had been ripped down by the Town of Sweden Code Enforcement officer. We were told that other sales in Sweden had had the same thing happen.

The officer told us our signs were removed because we did not pay for a garage sale permit.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t the only resident who did not know a permit was required; neither did approximately 50 other Sweden/Brockport residents that I talked to.

Rather than creating animosity by ripping down my signs, a phone call or visit from the officer asking that I purchase a permit would seem to me to be a much more courteous and professional way to deal with an almost 30 year resident. We pay close to $7,000 in taxes and feel that that is the least the officer could have done. Better yet, a visit may have even allowed the officer to introduce himself to a resident of the town.

I understand the reasoning behind the permit policy you want to avoid the perpetual sale. However, I do have a suggestion to replace the permit. Instead of having to purchase a permit, allow residents to register the sale (limited to two per year) online at no charge - with the caveat that if the signs aren’t removed the day the sale ends, there is a fine.

The officer could then remove signs of completed sales and avoid the ill will created by removing the signs that residents took the time, energy and money to make and post.

All in all, this was an extremely unpleasant experience as we prepare to leave a community that we have made our home for nearly three decades. I hope that the Town Board makes some changes to its garage sale permit policy.

Libertarian Party of New York launches petition drive On Tuesday, June 21, the Libertarian Party of New York (LPNY) launched its petition drive to place its presidential nominee Gary Johnson, running mate Bill Weld, US Senate candidate Alex Merced, and five congressional candidates on the November, 2016 ballot in New York State.

Under New York State law, the Libertarian Party is an “independent nominating body, not an official political party. The law requires that independent nominating petitions for presidential candidates contain at least 15,000 signatures, with at least 100 signatures obtained from residents in each of 15 of the 27 congressional districts in New York State.

There is a distinct advantage granted to the Republican and Democratic parties’ candidates: They get automatic ballot access as soon as they are chosen to be the candidate at their conventions.

Signatures gathered by the independent nominating bodies are often challenged by the major parties in an attempt to eliminate the competition. By eliminating signatures one at a time, the challenges have resulted in the inability of LPNY candidates to get on the ballot

shorter recovery time!

– often leaving just one major party’s candidate on the ballot uncontested.

The goal of the LPNY is to submit double the required number of signatures so its candidates can survive any challenge by the major parties.

The deadline for filing the petitions is August 2, 2016.

Kelsey Peters of Rochester earned provost’s list honors for the spring 2016 semester at SUNY Oneonta. To qualify for the provost’s list, a student must earn a perfect 4.0 GPA while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more.

Brooke Falsion, a resident of Brockport, was one of 81 SUNY Potsdam student-athletes to earn a spot on the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) All-Academic Team for the spring 2016 semester, the conference announced recently.

Falsion is a Freshman member of the SUNY Potsdam Softball team. Players named to the all-academic team had a minimum 3.3 GPA for the fall semester.

Jordan Ott, a resident of Hilton, was one of 47 SUNY Potsdam studentathletes to earn a spot on the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Commissioner’s List for the spring 2016 semester.

Ott is a Junior member of the SUNY Potsdam Women’s Ice Hockey and Softball team. Players named to the commissioner’s list have a minimum 3.3 GPA based on three semesters at Potsdam.

Hanna Cullen of Rochester was named to the dean’s list at the University of Memphis for the spring 2016 semester.

The dean’s list is composed of students who have earned 12 or more hours in either the fall or spring semester with a minimum GPA of 3.5 for that semester.

Devon Pascoe, son of Shelly and Dale Pascoe of Spencerport, was named to Susquehanna University’s dean’s list for the spring 2016 semester.

The dean’s list recognizes students who achieve a GPA of 3.4 or higher for the semester. To qualify, students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours.

Pascoe is an accounting major in the class of 2017 and a 2013 graduate of Spencerport High School.

Vaaseen Richards, a Psychology major from Rochester, received a bachelor’s degree at Florida, Institute of Technology’s Spring Commencement in May. Michael attended St. Pius Tenth School in Chili and is a graduate of Gates Chili High School. He is an Eagle Scout, a graduate of American Legion Boys State and an avid lacrosse player.

Michael will be attending The Basic School in September and then follow that with flight school in Pensacola, Florida for his aviation training.

His interest in aviation began many years ago at the Rochester Air Show with his dad. His family is proud of their three generations of many military families. Michael is the first officer in the family.

Brockport merchants create a community festival around sidewalk sale Members of the Brockport Merchant’s Association have been thinking, planning and budgeting since the cold days of winter to come up with a super summer weekend celebrating the community. The event will take place Thursday, July 7 through Sunday, July 10.

The Wine Walk in March generated enough funds in order to hire music and entertainment and create a space for local groups to share with the community what they are all about. As a result, they have restructured the sidewalk sale from beginning to end.

Friday morning will begin with super bargains and strolling musicians all day.

Market Street will feature a food truck rodeo with a live band and beer from 5 to 9 p.m. Stores will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Many stores will also be open for pre-sale specials on Thursday, followed by the first concert performance from Summer Serenades during the evening on the canal.

My dentist has told me I need two crowns on my back teeth, but I am almost 80 years old and I’m not sure I really want to do them. After all, how much longer am I going to be around anyway?

Well, I don’t think any of us really know how long we’ll be around, but I can understand your concerns. Ice, heat and exercise are three elements you can use to ease bodily discomfort, including the common problems of lower back pain.

Erie Canal and Erie Canalway Trail temporarily close for repairs Draining of the Erie Canal scheduled to begin on Monday, June 27 The New York State Canal Corporation announced that necessary repairs to a culvert that runs underneath the Erie Canal approximately 500 yards west of the Hulberton Lift Bridge in the Town of Murray will require the temporary closure and draining of the Erie Canal between the villages of Brockport and Middleport commencing on Monday, June 27.

After this section of the canal is drained and preliminary construction work has started, the canal between Middleport and Albion will be refilled with water. However, a 15-mile section of the canal between the Albion Guard Gate (just west of the Village of Albion) and the Brockport Guard Gate (just west of the Village of Brockport) will remain de-watered until repairs are complete.

Residents who live along the Erie Canal in the immediate vicinity of the culvert repair work are safe. The Canal Corporation will assist in towing boats outside of the

above referenced closure area if requested by the owners, but shall not be responsible for any damage to vessels, as a result of towing or that are not removed from the Canal prior to the closure.

Effective immediately, a detour on the Erie Canalway Trail from the Hulberton Lift Bridge to approximately 3,500 feet west of the lift bridge is in effect utilizing Canal Road on the north side of the canal.

Users of the trail should follow the posted detour signs.

The Canal Corporation estimates the closure of the Erie Canal in this area and the detour of the Erie Canalway Trail will last several weeks.

Mariners seeking information on alternative routes should contact the Canal Corporation at 518-471-5014.

Brockport Village Board members ready to get back to work

The incumbent candidates in last Tuesday’s village election in Brockport are ready to get down to work now that they have returned to office.

Annie Crane, Bill Andrews and John LaPierre were all re-elected in voting June 21. The Village election came less than a month after dissolution was rejected. All three winning candidates ran on the Revitalize Brockport line.

Annie Crane received 389 votes to 290 for Tim Barry for a one year trustee term. For the two, 4-year trustee terms, Trustee Bill Andrews received 362 votes, Trustee John La Pierre received 374 votes, Lyle Stirk received 307 votes and Sarah Hart received 313 votes. Stirk, Hart and Barry ran on the Residents for a Better Community line.

Although Stirk was not elected to the board, he says he plans to become more involved in village government. “It’s important that all residents get involved,” Stirk said. “It’s easy to point fingers, but it doesn’t get you anywhere. I want to solve problems.”

Trustee Bill Andrews, who also serves as Deputy Mayor, said he was pleased with the election results. He says the Village Board

is facing much hard work. “We are well aware of the problems the village faces,” Andrews said. “It will require a lot of work to deal with the problems.”

He thanked supporters of the Revitalize Brockport line as well as those who opposed dissolution during that vote on May 24.

Annie Crane, who was appointed to the Board to fill a vacancy in 2015 said, “It feels good to be elected.” She says she is looking forward to the tasks at hand, which include, “a tax relief task force, fighting zombie homes and the comprehensive plan,” Crane said.

Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman was happy incumbent trustees will be returning. “This is the best team,” she said. “The Village Board works so well together. It has creative ideas and is hard working.”

She noted that Lyle Stirk is interested in being involved on the tax relief task force.

“He has come to many meetings and has done his homework,” she said.

The Mayor said she was involved going door to door as candidates campaigned, and noted the message was clear: “People do have difficulty with taxes, we get it,” she said.

Schedule: Juniors will have instruction from 10:30-11:30 & Golf from 11:30-3:30. (Lunch after nine not included) Sub-Juniors will have instruction from 11:30-12:30 & Golf from 1:00-3:30. (Lunch 12:30-1:00 not included) Cost of the Camp is $130 (non-members) $75 (members).

Price includes instruction, range balls & green fees.

All Camp dates will be held as scheduled. In case of bad weather instruction will be held inside and rain checks will be issued for golf.

All Sub Juniors will be required to have an adult present for at least one week of on course supervision.

Experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and QuickBooks are required. Individual must be organized, able to multi-task, work individually and in a team environment, and manage workflow to meet deadlines. Physician Services 1. Independent Contractor

During the term of this Agreement, the Physicians, as independent contractors, will act as a school physician(s) during interscholastic athletic related activities and events in accordance with the terms of this Agreement.

2. Term

3. Payment

As payment for the performance by the Physicians of its obligations under the terms of this Agreement, the District will pay the Physicians.

4. Responsibilities of the Physicians

The Physician will provide the District, during the term of this Agreement, with the services of New York licensed physicians necessary to discharge the duties of a school physician for the District, in the manner and as such duties are described in this Agreement and on the attached Schedule A. All such

duties shall be discharged in a timely, competent and complete fashion and, to the extend necessary and when appropriate, after appropriate consultation with the District, and subject to the standards and policies of the District and applicable law.

5. Responsibility of the District

The District is responsible for the following: (a) maintenance and repair of all equipment which the District normally provides for use by the school physician in the performance of its duties under the terms of the Agreement; and (b) providing the necessary supplies, space and support services which the District normally provides on its property for use by the school physician in the performance of its duties under the terms of the Agreement.

6. Outside Activities The Physician may engage in teaching, consulting and the practice of medicine off District premises, provided that such activities do not create a conflict of interest with or interfere with the discharge of their obligations under the terms of the Agreement.

7. Reports

All reports and other administrative documentation and recordkeeping required of the school physician by the District or applicable law will be provided and maintained by the Physicians in accordance with the District’s requests and policies. During the term of this Agreement and for a reasonable period of time after the Agreement has been terminated or expired, the Physicians will provide the district with all such reports, documentation and other records which relate to performance by the Physicians of their obligations under the terms of this Agreement.

8. Time Records

The Physicians will keep time records, which will reflect the hours worked and duties performed under and in accordance with the terms of this Agreement.

9. Ownership of Records

All records relating to District students, District personnel and the performance by the Physicians under the terms of this Agreement are and will remain the property of the District both during and after the term of this Agreement. However, the Physicians will be entitled to reasonable access to those records, during normal business hours, upon written request to the District.

10. Compliance With Laws

Performance under the terms of this Agreement by the Physicians and the District will comply with all federal, state and local laws and regulations, including but not limited to professional ethics and standards as enunciated by the New York State Education Department, the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association.

11. Insurance

As independent contractors the Physicians will not be covered by insurance maintained by the District. Therefore, the Physicians will maintain, at their expense, such liability and malpractice insurance necessary to insure against any loss resulting from any act or omission on the part of the Physicians relating to performance by them under the terms of this Agreement, and necessary to insure the indemnity obligation contained in paragraph 17 of this Agreement. The policy limits shall be at least $1,000,000 per claim and $3,000,000 annual aggregate. The Physician will provide the District with proof that such insurance is in full force and effect at all times during the term of this Agreement.

by Kristina Gabalski As an Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener, I had the opportunity recently to visit a beautiful garden and landscape at the home of Jill and Dan Ryan in Riga.

The Ryans were the winners of the 2015 Orleans County Master Gardener Makeover contest and we visited their home the morning of June 11 to install a new island perennial bed in their front lawn.

Their four-acre property is stunning. The Ryan’s home is more than one hundred years old and their landscape includes a pond and a creek with mature trees and ample shade. A portion of the landscape is left “wild” while other portions are meticulously groomed.

Dan and Jill have worked to create special places to enjoy their landscape. A gazebo sits on a patio in a shaded portion of the yard overlooking the creek. Dan says it’s where he and Jill can un-wind at the end of the day. He also created a fire pit for campfires and most recently installed a koi pond just off the back of the house.

The area just north of the house was once the Ryan’s vegetable garden, but Jill says with a farm stand just down the road, the couple no longer grows vegetables. Currently they have rhubarb and berry bushes in the space.

Master Gardeners installed the perennial bed, which will add color to the yard as well as even more “curb appeal” from the road.

The Ryans decided to try their luck last year, obtaining their entry ticket at Sara’s Garden Center in Brockport.

They were completely surprised and delighted when they found out they had won, and both said the newly installed garden, “looks gorgeous.”

The kidney-shaped island bed sits in a mostly sunny spot and is outlined by rocks, which Dan installed. As winners of the Makeover, Dan and Jill were able to select $500 in plants from Sara’s, which they did in late May. Top on their list were easy care perennials such as rudbeckia and purple cone flower as well as heuchera, daylilies and salvia. A trellis functions as a focal point and will support clematis vines.

The Garden Makeover Contest is open to those living in Orleans and surrounding counties. Square footage of the garden - either new or a renovation for an established garden - can be no more than 200 square feet. In addition to plants donated by Sara’s, the winner receives design services and labor from Orleans County Master Gardeners.

A maintenance plan is supplied for the project by Master Gardeners and the Cooperative Extension Horticulture Educator. The winner is then responsible for maintenance following garden installation.
