Local municipal electrics vital part of power restoration following wind storm by Kristina Gabalski It’s said that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. That was certainly the case recently when the area was pummeled by a violent wind storm March 8, leaving tens of thousands without power. Local Municipal Electric Utility Association of New York State (MEUA) municipalities not only restored power to their own villages, their linemen also helped to restore power to RG&E customers around Monroe County. Churchville Mayor Nancy Steedman is the current president of MEUA. “The recent 81 mile per hour winds caused tremendous damage to our community and surrounding areas,” she says. “This windstorm on March 8 brought the need for mutual aid to RG&E by the MEUA.” Village municipal electric companies from Bath, Bergen, Castile, Churchville, Endicott, Fairport, Frankfort, Greene, Groton, Hamilton, Mohawk, Penn Yan, Solvay, Spencerport and Watkins Glen were ready to offer mutual aid assistance to the RG&E storm restoration process, Mayor Steedman says. “Locally, the MEUA systems of the Villages of Bergen, Churchville, Fairport, Holley and Spencerport joined with an additional 35 villages throughout NYS as their Mutual Aid plan was implemented for this storm,” she adds. Owen McIntee, Electric Superintendent of the Village of Spencerport and Tom Santillo, Village of Fairport Electric, coordinated and led linemen for the mutual aid starting Friday, March 10 through Wednesday, March 15, Mayor Steedman says. “There were 45 linemen who worked with RG&E to restore power throughout Monroe County,” she explains. “MEUA linemen repaired a primary circuit feeding East Rochester and Perinton that restored power to 2,000 RG&E customers. Their repairs to restore power continued until completed.” Mayor Steedman says she and the entire Churchville Village Board are very proud of the efforts of these linemen. “The Village of Churchville linemen, Churchville DPW crew and office staff had Churchville village customers restored within 24 hours along with clearing the streets of fallen tree debris and responding to phone calls. We were then ready to help others. They are all to be commended. “The continuation of the restoration of power to the Rochester area by Church-
ville Municipal Electric linemen along with linemen from across NYS is to be admired,” she continues. “Power was restored quickly, safely and without injury. The MEUA Mutual Aid plan was deployed when needed and worked efficiently. This was definitely a proud example of multiple local governments working together for the good of residents. It makes me proud to be a part of the Village of Churchville and the MEUA.” Bergen Mayor Anna Marie Barclay says there were no outages in the Village of Bergen during the violent storm. “(Our) crew removed downed trees from roadways, and removed branches from overhead wires,” she says. “The Village Board and residents are extremely proud of the upgrades and maintenance - tree pruning, etc. - to our system by our linemen. This enabled the homes and businesses within our system to remain up and running, and enabled our crew to provide mutual aid for other communities in need.” The Bergen crew spent nine hours in Churchville providing mutual aid to their system, and four hours in Spencerport providing mutual aid, Mayor Barclay says. “The next four days were spent in Rochester for mutual aid with RG&E. Nick Booher and Matt Sluburski worked 79 hours, Joe Chimino worked 82.5. In all situations the village bucket truck was in use. Our crew was very complimentary of all those they worked with, and of the support they received from everyone during the storm event and restoration time,” she says. In Spencerport, Mayor Gary Penders says he and the village board are very proud of their village and villages throughout the state. “With associations like the MEUA, Mutual Aid plans are developed and efficiently deployed when the need calls,” he says. Mayor Penders said Spencerport Municipal Electric Superintendent Owen McIntee, who is also MEUA’s Mutual Aid Coordinator, and the New York Power Authority contacted the MEUA to activate the newly adopted Private/Public Mutual Aid Protocol Agreement which, “activated the MEUA Mutual Aid response process with RG&E. RG&E welcomed the offer,” Mayor Penders said. He adds that from Sunday, March 12 through Wednesday, March 15, MEUA crews worked in the Village of Pittsford, Henrietta, the City of Rochester, Brighton, East Irondequoit, Webster and the Durand Eastman Park area restoring power to RG&E customers.

Third annual Hilton Cadet Connect Day focuses on communication Students from Hilton High School and Merton Williams Middle School volunteered to be part of this year’s Cadet Connect, an opportunity for older students to mentor and form relationships with students in 60 classrooms at Hilton School District’s three elementary schools. The program, in its third year, is a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiative giving older and younger students the opportunity to work together on the International Baccalaureate (IB) approaches to learning skills: thinking, communication, social skills, selfmanagement and research. The focus of this year’s Cadet Connect, held in February, was being a communicator, one of the 10 attributes in the IB learner profile. The WAVE broadcast media students at the high school created a video titled, “We Love Hilton Schools Because...” The big cadets then interviewed the little cadets to get to know them better and worked with them on puzzle pieces that they could decorate any way they wanted to

Opinion Support education to value the whole child In October 2014, the four of us, veteran teachers with more than 90 years of combined experience, filed a federal lawsuit against the New York State Department of Education and Commissioner Elia. Our challenge was brought on the grounds that a “gag-order” teachers signed when scoring the 2013 and 2014 NYS ELA exams was a prior-restraint infringement upon our First Amendment rights to free speech. The lawsuit was settled this past December, when U.S. Magistrate Judge Christian Hummel approved an agreement that said the New York State Department of Education cannot take action against educators who discuss publicly released exam questions. Yet, while the state claims transparency due to the fact that they now release exam questions by June 1 of each year, tests are still weighted around multiple-choice questions that are only partially released - and only after approval by SED. Furthermore, SED continues to use these exams to underscore a political narrative by withholding results until the middle of summer, despite the fact that they are scored in May. Since the implementation of the Common Core, the grades 3 through 8 tests have been a tool to paint public education in a negative light. Currently, 60 to 70 percent of students fail these exams, yet miraculously, high school Regents passing rates are much higher. This inconsistency is a clear indication that the validity and reliability of the 3 through 8 tests must be scrutinized. The 3 through 8 Math and ELA tests are a weapon of choice for those out to privatize public education. The correlation between passing rates on the exams and the socioeconomic status of a community is so strong that every stakeholder should demand full transparency. We question exams shrouded in secrecy that are used to narrow curriculum through a damaging overemphasis on math and literacy; that deny students the rich, handson education experience they deserve; and whose results are used to perpetuate the myth of the “failing public school” by shaming and blaming communities that have a disproportionate number of students living in poverty. As veteran educators, we believe in an education grounded in research-based practices that value the whole child. And, it is our students who suffer when our voices are silenced from advocating on their behalf. Robert Allen Carol Lennon Claudia Montecalvo Emmy Thevanesan Cosgrove Middle School educators

Puttin’ on the Ritz to benefit local food shelves The Brockport First Baptist Church will play host to “Puttin’ On the Ritz, a benefit vocal concert to benefit the Brockport, Spencerport and Hamlin Ecumenical Food Shelves. The concert will promote awareness and support of the food shelves. The performance, starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, will bring together the talents of three local groups: the Sweden Senior Singers, under the direction of Maryellen Giese; the Spencerport Community Chorus, under the direction of Darla Bair; and the band Lake Effect, performing classic rock and roll of the 50s, 60s and beyond. A wide variety of songs will be performed including rock, pop, classical, gospel and show tunes. The concert is free, but a free-will donation is appreciated of either money or a non-perishable food item(s). The event will include a baked food sale to also benefit the food shelves. The church, located at 124 Main Street (corner of Main and Holley streets) in the village of Brockport is handicapped accessible. Refreshments and fellowship will follow the concert. Comments Bring rain barrel workshop to Monroe County In regards to the article, “Rain barrel workshop set in Orleans County (Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, March 19, 2017): Great job, Orleans County for taking this action. I wish Monroe County would also hold something comparable. If the weather this past two weeks is any indication, we can continue to expect extreme weather. What a great idea for anyone with a garden, or for even those who like to water their grass in the summer. Maybe some of our west side golf courses could look into utilizing this technique for water conservation and watershed protection. We all love our canals, gardens and lawns. There are so many beautiful resources in the western part of Monroe County, I am sure we could benefit from such a workshop. Ellen Robillard Ogden

Sigillo Chiropractic Protect Your Joints
The spine, of course, is a series of joints that are vital to your well-being. The spine protects the spinal cord, which is the conduit for signals from the brain to the various areas of the body and vice versa. But you have to Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. be careful with all your joints to enjoy a good quality of life. Keep these tips in mind for healthy joints: Wear sturdy quality footwear. Your feet and legs are the foundation on which you operate. Keep your weight under control. Every excess pound you carry puts unnecessary strain on joints, including hips, knees and ankles. It also puts an extra burden on your feet. One of the best forms of exercise, not only for the joints in your feet and legs but for your cardiovascular health and overall fitness, is walking. When lifting something heavy, use the powerful leg muscles. In other words, bend at the knees when lifting. Bending at the waist puts undue stress on your spine and hips and is an invitation to injury. Talk with your physician before embarking on any exercise regimen.
Is it better to brush my teeth when I first get up in the morning or after breakfast? Traditionally we have been taught to “brush after every meal,” but not everyone agrees with that. Whenever we eat, the bacteria in our mouths react with the food producing acids that attack our teeth and cause tooth decay. Therefore, it seems logical that removing the food as soon as possible would be the best way to prevent decay. However, what if we reduced the number of bacteria in our mouths before we introduce the food? By reducing the number of bacteria present, the amount of acid produced would be dramatically reduced as well and less acid means less decay. This is especially true first thing in the morning because while we sleep, our salivary flow is decreased allowing the plaque and bacteria to build up much more than during the daytime (also the main reason for “morning breath”). In reality, these differences are probably negligible and the controversy is more academic than real. Personally, I believe that making sure you do a thorough job of brushing at least twice a day is far more important than whether you brush before or after breakfast. If you do brush before your meal, however, it is a good idea to at least rinse your mouth thoroughly afterwards to remove any remaining food debris.

Spring is a great time of year to assess your health and fitness. With the weather getting warmer, we tend to wear less clothing and spend more time outdoors being active. To increase your self-confidence, and improve your feeling of health and wellness, follow these tips: Book a physical Annual physicals are an important assessment of your overall health. Often health issues creep up slowly on the inside and don’t manifest outward symptoms until it’s a bigger problem. An annual physical and blood work will help you stay on the preventative side of illness and maintain better wellness. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Get a new pair of running/workout sneakers The average sneakers only maintain good arch support for up to six months. If the arches are worn down then the foot support will be affected and this can cause pain to not only your feet but also your ankles and knees. If you are unsure of what type of athletic shoe to wear, check with a specialty store that will assess your foot structure and running/walking gait. Based on your foot, gait and lifestyle, they can prescribe the best type of shoe for you. Clean out the pantry Winter we often hibernate in our houses and hide behind loose layered clothing. If you want to trim down your body fat, start with your pantry. The pantry can often house some of the unhealthiest choices in your kitchen. Get rid of the sugary and starchy non nutritional items like cookies, chips, cereals and breads … yes, even those 100 calories packs. Remember whole foods are the best for your health and waist line. Now is the time to think “farmers market” for fun and healthy shopping. Lucky for us in Monroe County we have an abundance of farmers markets and farmer stands to shop from. Pump up your play list If you are still listening to music from December, do some spring cleaning and get some fresh new music to help keep you motivated during your workout. Research shows that music not only distracts you from the physical challenges of exercise but also helps you work harder. Finding music that uplifts your energy and helps get you in the zone can be a great benefit. Sign up for an event No better way to keep yourself motivated and accountable than committing to some type of an event. Committing to a charity walk, 5k, mud run or obstacle course can really help you have an event to look forward to. This will help keep you motivated to condition and train. Enlist some of your friends and have fun with it. Visit http://www.active. com/rochester-ny/running/5k to learn more about some local events coming up this spring and summer.

GCC presents second annual Scholars’ Symposium When the college hosts its second annual Scholars’ Symposium on Thursday, March 30, GCC students, faculty, staff, community leaders and friends will showcase some of their most inspired work. Presented by the Genesee Community College Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (CURCA) Committee, the full-day event includes presentations, performances, exhibits and guest speakers - all focused on the most inventive and bright minds of the community. All events are free and open to the public. “We’re looking forward to exploring the creative and innovative work accomplished by our students, faculty and friends of the
college,” said JoNelle Toriseva, director of GCC’s English, Communications and Media Arts, who is organizing the event. “The Scholars’ Symposium is a day to catch your breath from the rigors of academia, and enjoy expanding the possibilities for professional and personal growth.” John Covach will deliver the event’s keynote address, lecturing on “The History of Rock and Roll.” He is professor of Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music, as well as the chair of the College Department of Music, director of the Institute for Popular Music and a Mercer Brugler Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Rochester. Brockport CSD universal pre-k registration deadline extended Seats are still available for Brockport Central School District’s grant-funded 2017-18 universal pre-kindergarten (UPK) program. The program, with a strong focus on early learning, will start in September and follow the school calendar. Children will attend school five days a week for two and a half hours a day during morning or afternoon sessions. Since the grant requires a collaborative effort between BCSD and area childhood education agencies, some children will attend private schools while the majority of students will attend Brockport’s Ginther School. All sites will use the curriculum developed by the UPK Advisory Board and will be taught by a certified teacher.
To be eligible for the UPK program, children must be four years old by December 1, 2017 and reside within the Brockport Central School District. Families are responsible for making their own transportation arrangements, as transportation is not part of the New York State Education Department grant. To request an application, call the Registrar’s Office at 637-1857. The deadline to return completed UPK applications has been extended to May 19. Frequently asked questions about the program are posted on the district’s website at www.bcs1.org/upk. For additional information, call the Instruction Office at 637-1816. Provided information

dozens of articles on topics dealing with popular music, twelve-tone music, and the philosophy and aesthetics of music. Another highlight to the Symposium will be sharing GCC’s Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) partnerships. Two Latin American Academy Fellows for the USA-Mexico Multistate COIL Program (MCP) will give presentations after the keynote address in the Stuart Steiner Theatre. Under the leadership of the COIL Center, the Latin America Academy (LAA) develops course-based partnerships between SUNY (State University of New York) campuses and universities in Latin America, which are members of the growing Global Partnership Network (GPN). The COIL Center selected GCC and its faculty to develop and pilot equitable, team-taught coursework to emphasize experiential and collaborative student learning and help sustain long-term international teaching and learning partnerships. Through COIL, students from different countries use web-based technology to gain a new cultural lens for an enriching intercultural experience. Brockport reschedules community presentation of “I’m Not Racist ... Am I?” Brockport Central School District’s community presentation of “I’m Not Racist ... Am I?” is rescheduled for Tuesday, March 28. The community is invited to join the Brockport Central School District Board of Education and administrative leaders to view and discuss the documentary at 6 p.m. in the Hill School cafeteria. “I’m Not Racist ... Am I?” is a documentary about how the next generation is going to confront racism. The film follows 12 teenagers from New York City who come together for one school year to talk about race and privilege in a series of workshops and conversations.
“We are excited to offer the community an opportunity to engage in discussion about race and inclusion in a diverse environment,” said Brockport Superintendent Dr. Lesli C. Myers. “Our Board of Education and leadership team will also be viewing the film and discussing ways in which we can continuously uphold our core belief of character: integrity, diversity and respect for all.” If interested in attending the presentation and discussion, contact Brockport Central School District Clerk Stephanie Williams at stephanie.williams@bcs1.org or 637-1939 by March 27. The Genesee Community College Multicultural Communications Club that partners with Toastmasters International will host a special evening to honor the diversity of its members and continue the celebration of the GCC’s 50th Anniversary. The fourth ever East Meets West event will be held at GCC’s Batavia Campus, One College Road, Batavia on Saturday, April 18 at 6 p.m. This year’s theme is the “Rainbow Connection.” The campus will serve an international buffet dinner in the central William W. Stuart Forum, and the keynote address will be held in the Stuart Steiner Theatre. The evening’s event brings together the art of communication, diversity, musical theatre and an international food buffet. The cuisine will include sushi, Mediterranean medley, sesame chicken, custom fare from Mexico, India, Italy and beyond, plus an array of desserts. The buffet is being catered by American Dining Creations, GCC’s food service provider, and by Wegmans. Several performing artists will add their talent and creativity to the East Meets West Rainbow Connection. Eleven-year old Brianna Collichio, from Spencerport, will sing the national anthem. Despite having cystic fibrosis which reduces her lung capacity, Miss Collichio’s uplifting voice cannot be silenced. She has sung the national anthem in front of 70,000 plus fans at the New York Jets game at MetLife Stadium, and for the Buffalo Bills. In addition, musical theater performances by the “a capella” quintet UPSCALE will entertain guests. UPSCALE, consisting of Rochester residents Marc Cataldi, Jason Mincer, Colin Pazki, Ashley Wegman and Matt Wegman, will offer something for everyone from their wide repertoire of musical theater experiences. Both current and alumni members of GCC’s Multicultural Communications Club will also help round-out the evening’s entertainment, while Caleb Nicodemus, GCC 2011 graduate, will be the master of ceremonies. The main point of the evening is the keynote address by Darren Tay, Toastmasters 2016-2017 World Champion Speaker, to be held in the Stuart Steiner Theatre. Tay is the first Singaporean to win the Toastmasters International World Championship of public speaking, surviving several rounds of a competition that lasted six months and included more than 30,000 competitors from public speaking clubs around the world. The 27-year-old lawyer and world’s number-one public speaker is the managing director and master trainer of the Public Speaking Academy, a company which he founded in 2009. His first book, Express to Impress, was published in 2012 and became the best-selling book in Singapore. Darren is an award-winning speaker who specializes in topics of confidence building, increasing one’s influence and persuasive skills. He has spoken to more than 100,000 people during his career as a professional speaker and is a highly sought after keynote speaker, coach and trainer. For many years, GCC’s Multicultural Communications Club has provided participants the opportunity to learn how to give impromptu speeches, present prepared speeches and improve their communication skills in a supportive environment, helping to remove the fear of public speaking. The East Meets West event celebrates the mosaic tapestry of different students who are or have been club members, as well as the diversity of students, faculty and staff at the College.
The event exemplifies GCC’s 50-year history of focusing on student success. A portion of this event is being underwritten by the State University of New York grant that was awarded to the club by the SUNY office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Tickets for the East Meets West event are only available in advance, and will not be sold at the door. Adult tickets cost $30, GCC students, faculty and staff are $20, and children under age 12 are $10. To secure advance tickets, email the GCC Box Office at boxoffice@genesee.edu with the number of tickets and a telephone number; visit the GCC Box Office during open hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., or call the Box Office at 345-6814. For further information, contact either Jackie DiBella, Multicultural Club advisor at jedibella@genesee.edu or 278-8851 or Donna Rae Sutherland, GCC’s Marketing Communications associate director at 343-0055 ext. 6616 or dsutherland@genesee.edu. Comments Communities come together during crisis After the windstorm on March 8, two local municipalities went above and beyond my expectations for the residents of Hilton. Mayor Gary Penders of Spencerport offered their utility staff and resources to us to help restore power for 1,100 Hilton residents. Many of those were senior citizens. Supervisor William Reilich of Greece opened an overnight shelter and called me numerous times to make sure our residents had a safe, warm place to stay. The caring and support that Hilton was shown is a genuine testament as to the level of commitment local government has for our entire community. Thank you for sharing your resources with us, it will not be forgotten. Mayor Joe Lee Village of Hilton
