Stepping Up to the World Championships of Irish Dance

nior, Jude Hare, will be participating in the World Irish Dancing Championships in Montréal, Québec, Canada. The competition will be held Sunday, April 2, through Sunday, April 9, with over 6,000 participants from all around the world. Worldwide, only one percent of Irish dancers have the honor of competing in the World Championships. The event is organized by The Irish Dancing Commission with the goal of promoting Irish dance and use of the Irish language.

Jude is 17 years old and has been dancing for the past ten years. He started dancing in honor, and in memory of Noel Parcells, a 10 year old girl from Hilton whose life ended tragically in September of 2011. Jude’s mother Michelle Hare said, “During the summer months after her parents divorced, Noel and her mother stayed in our home, with our family. Noel loved everything St. Patrick’s Day and all things green, actually she loved all the holidays. We feel it is a fitting tribute to her memory.”

Jude struggled in the beginning with his dancing. “Jude is autistic,” Michelle said, “In his autism he is very contrary. He struggles with the social aspects of being around people. When he first started dancing he kept his head down, and sometimes even walked off stage. Eventually that stopped happening. The audiences cheered him on so big that over time, it built his level of confidence, which helped him with all endeavors in life. He learned to be confident, and that he has the ability to accomplish what he sets his mind to.”

Beginning Irish Dance studies at seven years old is considered a late start. In the beginning of his dance studies, Jude was in classes where he received recognition and participation trophies. He told his mother that he wanted to learn with all the other dancers. Although transitions are quite difficult, he now successfully performs solo, and within groups of dancers of all ages. He has developed the ability to adapt on demand.

During his Irish Dance studies, Jude excelled at the six accomplishment levels of the dance form, moving through them quite quickly. Levels include: beginner, advanced beginner, novice, prizewinner, preliminary championship and open championship. With each level comes additional dance privileges.

The costumes that dancers wear are part of a progression in higher levels.

Jude now proudly wears a costume that he designed himself. Michelle said, “Jude’s outfit is three years old and he still loves it. It it a custom design that came from Jude’s imagination. The boys are much more fortunate than the girls that dance in that most girls change dance dresses each year. Dresses range in price from $300 to $3,000.”

As dancers advance in competition and are given solo roles, they are permitted to wear a costume of their own design and colors.

Years ago, the traditional dress for competition was your “Sunday Best” clothes. Over time, ornately embroidered dresses became popular. Today, even more ornamentation is used on girls’ dresses, with rhinestones, sequins, and other embellishments. Most women and girls wear a wig, a bun or hairpiece for a competition, but some still curl their own hair. Costumes are deeply integrated into Irish dance culture. Many feature traditional elements of classic peasant wear adorned with Celtic designs. Some costumes feature lace or embroidery patterned after designs in the Irish Book of Kells.

Most men wear a shirt, vest or jacket, tie and black trousers. As the men progress through the levels of achievement, they are also given the choice to design their costumes.

The history of Ireland is also the history of Irish Dance. The roots of the dancing comes from the Celts and the Druids, early inhabitants of Ireland.

Traditional Irish dance is performed solo, or in groups of up to twenty or more trained dancers. In Ireland, Irish dance is part of social dancing, formal performances and competitions. Known for intricate

foot work and a stiff upper body, Irish dancers do not move their arms or hands so that footwork is prominent. Musical instruments like the Irish Bodhran (drum), fiddle, concertina, accordion, Uilleann pipes, Celtic harp, tin whistles and banjo form the background of Irish dance music

Jude excels in many of the arts. In middle school he taught himself how to play a piano. His mother said, “I had an old keyboard in the closet. I heard music coming from his room. It was Jude playing and composing songs on the spot. He has never had a music lesson. He can play any instrument he picks up. When we go to Pittsburgh there is a piano at the place where the dance competitions are held. Jude plays the piano all day long. He just zones out and plays

songs that come out of his head, he draws a crowd around him to listen. Each year at the competition when people recognize him, they ask him to play the piano for them. He just shines when he performs.”

Jude attends dance classes seven hours a week, plus when he is preparing for a performance, additional weekly private one hour lessons are scheduled. He studies at the Rochester Academy of Irish Dance, 1598 Penfield Road in Rochester. Jude performs 100 hours a year dancing at community events, libraries, nursing homes, and public and private performances. It is volunteer, and all throughout the year.

Ogden’s Comprehensive Plan

Recently, my family took a trip to the Ogden Farmers’ Library where one of my sons took out the book Who Was Helen Keller by Gare Thompson. My oldest read it and we had a great conversation. We talked about how impossible it would feel to be both deaf and blind, yet I remembered a rather profound quote of hers that read, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” This is true in so many things, least of which, government.

When I first took over as Supervisor just over a year ago, I knew that one of our tasks was to develop a long-term vision for the residents of the town that would not just prepare it for the future, but to also honor and respect its heritage. The document that aims to do so is called the Comprehensive Plan. Its goal is to cast a long-term vision for the community while setting realistic goals to achieve it. This plan was last redone in 2003 and updated in 2012. Ogden has changed substantially in the past decade and it’s the perfect time to reevaluate the trajectory for our town and determine where we would like to go as community.

According to NYS Town Law 272-A, a Comprehensive Plan is defined as “the materials, written and/or graphic, including but not limited to maps, charts, studies, resolutions, reports and other descriptive material that identify the goals, objectives, principles, guidelines, policies, standards, devices and Instruments for the immediate and long-range protection, enhancement, growth and development of the town.”

Ogden’s new Comprehensive Plan will provide an overall framework for public and private investment and decision making in the Town. This will be a vital tool to ensuring future growth and development maintains the rural character of our local community while making it a special place to live, work and raise a family.

One of the key components to any Comprehensive Plan is updating the current and future land use maps. It will consist of nine categories: agriculture; residential; commercial; industrial; recreation uses; public service; vacant, infrastructure; and open space. Updated maps will show these

areas and help define how the land in the town should be developed. For example, evaluating whether there is a need for additional single-family homes, recreational opportunities or public services, will all play a major role in completing these maps.

Now let me be clear on something, this will not be “my” plan, but rather a plan by and for the people of our great town. It’s essential that local residents get involved and make their voices heard throughout this process. The town will actively seek input from residents and stakeholders, including businesses, churches and schools. A steering committee consisting of local residents has been formed to review the 2012 Comprehensive Plan and advise the town on areas that should be addressed. The town will also utilize a consultant who will help navigate us through this process. Once completed, the Comprehensive Plan must be adopted by the Town Board, which requires public review through a public hearing.

The Town of Ogden’s New Comprehensive Plan will prepare us for the future and help navigate us through these ever-changing times. We all love this community and want our new Comprehensive Plan to paint a picture of Ogden that promotes positive change and preserves the rural, quaint and small town feel that we know and love.

Hilton schools evacuated after bomb threat

The Hilton Central School District evacuated all five of its schools the morning of Wednesday, March 22, after an anonymous bomb threat was sent via email to some local media outlets and then reported to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The threat claimed that pipe bombs had been placed in the District Office, all school buildings, and at the home of Superintendent Casey Kosiorek.

Deputies secured all of the schools and after consulting with the Sheriff’s Office, the district made the decision to cancel the school day and send approximately 5,000 students and staff members home. A robocall went out to parents around 9:40 a.m. advising them of the situation and asking them to pick up their children as soon as possible. Students waited in buses outside the schools until parents arrived.

K9 units and Hazardous Device Technicians from the Sheriff’s Office and its law enforcement partners searched all of the buildings and no explosive devices or hazardous materials were found. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Section is investigating the source of this threat and will continue to do so.

The person who sent the anonymous bomb threat accused the district of grooming children and encouraging students to read sexual content, specifically mentioning a book in the school’s library system titled This Book is Gay

Someone raised concerns about the book at a recent school board meeting. Kosiorek said the title has been available in the school library since 2015 and has been checked out twice in that time. It is currently under review process.

A previously planned gathering of concerned parents was held the evening of March 22 to discuss the availability of LGBTQ books in school libraries.

Legal Notice

Hilton schools reopened on Thursday with additional police presence during arrival and dismissal. The district also brought in extra counselors and their “trauma, illness, and grief” team to help students experiencing anxiety or social and emotional issues stemming from the incident.

Kosiorek called the threat disruptive and irresponsible and said it would not be tolerated. “As a father of three children who attend the Hilton Central School District, it is extremely concerning,” Kosiorek said. “I hope that law enforcement is able to catch the individuals who made this threat and they’re held accountable to the fullest letter of the law.”

Assemblymembers Harry Bronson, Sarah Clark, Demond Meeks, Jen Lunsford and Josh Jensen, along with state Senators Jeremy Cooney and Samra Brouk, responded to the incident with the following statement: “The bomb threats made against Hilton Schools, their students, faculty, staff and neighbors, are nothing short of an act of terrorism. The perpetrators of this cowardly act were motivated by hatred and fear of LGBTQ content offered to students who, throughout history, have been silenced and marginalized by exactly this kind of bullying. This vile and hateful act against our children will not go unanswered.”

They also said, “As representatives of Monroe County in the New York State Legislature, we stand strong with the Hilton community and the broader LGBTQ community. We see you, we love you, and we will not let anyone treat you with anything less than the dignity and respect you deserve.”

New York’s nursing home industry delivered a 33-page petition to Governor Kathy Hochul and members of the New York State Legislature on March 22 expressing support for a 20% increase in Medicaid funding for the State’s ailing nursing homes.

New York has not increased its Medicaid reimbursement rate to nursing homes in 15 years and leads the nation with the largest shortfall – approximately $55 per day – between its reimbursement to providers and the actual cost of providing care. Approximately 60,000 of New York’s nursing home residents rely on Medicaid exclusively.

Carolyn Ann Ellman

Carolyn Ann Ellman passed peacefully on March 13, 2023. She was predeceased by her husband, best friend, and great love Kenneth Ellman. She was born on April 3, 1941 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina as the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Lockwood) Wagner and the sister of the late Robert Wagner. Carolyn spent her childhood learning responsibility and patience for her extended family, which included hardships they all endured to support and live with three generations of family in one house. She learned resilience from saying goodbye to her father who was deployed during World War II and saying hello to him when he returned as a changed man. She learned to survive grief at the loss of her beloved brother Robert at a young age. Raised primarily in Brockport, NY, she graduated from Brockport High School and went on to complete her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Education at SUNY Brockport. A passionate teacher, she taught math and elementary education at Gates-Chili Central School District for her entire career. She used every minute of that career to kindly and gently mold her students in academic and social skills. During the summers, Carolyn worked for the Greece Department of Recreation, directing Lakeshore Playground and then serving as “Crafty Carol” at all the sites. A woman of great faith, Carolyn was a Eucharistic minister and taught Sunday school, Confirmation and Pre-Cana classes at Mother of Sorrows. Active in the community, she led a scout troop, and coached recreation soccer. She participated in the Red Hat Society and was part of the “Sexy Six”. She became a stronger branch in our family tree with every generation. Carolyn was a wonderful grandmother, and an amazing great grandma, living life with her little ones with joy and good humor. Carolyn is survived by siblings Richard (Susan) Wagner, and Jocelyn (Randy) Sodoma, children Richard Jr. (Anna) Rohrberg, Barbara Martorana, Debbie Carpenter, grandchildren Cassidy and Tyler Rohrberg, Miranda, Jordan, and Diana Martorana, Joshua (Kayla) and Jesse Stein, and her great-grandchildren Mason and Avery Stein. She will be greatly missed.

•Cunningham, Joan (née Frank), of Bradenton, Florida, and Spencerport, died March 15, 2023 at age 97. She is predeceased by her husband, Leo, and their daughter, Mary. She is survived by her three sons, Daniel (MaryEllen), Robert (Donna), and James (Sue Grace, deceased); her grandchildren, Shawn (Laura), Bryan (Robin), Patrick (Lowe), Bridget (Vincent), and Kellan; ten great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and countless friends. She cherished art and, like her father and older sister, was herself a gifted artist. Joan was a woman of abiding faith and a regular at daily mass (at St. John the Evangelist in Spencerport and later Saints Peter and Paul in Bradenton); she was especially devoted to Our Blessed Mother. In 97 years, Joan lived many lives. But no matter when you encountered her - as a den mother of a Cub Scout pack in the ‘50s, as a postal worker in the ‘80s, as a volunteer for the St. John’s Religious Shoppe in the ‘90s - “Joanie” was always enthusiastic and energetic, devoted and devout. No matter the place or the decade, she was so loving, and she was so loved.

Churchville Elementary School teacher Katie McArdle is the latest to receive WROC TV Channel 8’s coveted Golden Apple Award. She was nominated by the parents of one of her kindergarten students.

The Golden Apple Award was presented to Mrs. McArdle in a surprise

visit to her classroom by WROC reporter Katrina Irwin and CES Principal Kate Daly. While McArdle was completely caught off guard, her students loved the excitement of the TV cameras, and several were interviewed about their teacher.

The Golden Apple Award recognizes excellence in teaching around the Rochester area. The nominating parent wrote, “Mrs. McArdle is every parent’s dream… she shines in how she goes above and beyond. Whether it is getting all her students to write and draw pictures for Damar Hamlin or getting her entire hallway (and now school) to decorate during the holidays… (She) had all of kindergarten dressed as Minions, singing minions songs… fun seeps out of her room into the whole school. Brockport’s Main Street bridge project delayed for Park Avenue bridge repair

The Park Avenue lift bridge over the Erie Canal in Brockport will close to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Monday, March 27, to facilitate repairs to the bridge’s lifting mechanism. A routine seasonal maintenance inspection of the Park Avenue bridge turned up two damaged anchor cables (that connect to the counterweights).The work is expected to take approximately six weeks and the bridge will be in the raised position during that period.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to use the nearby State Route 19 (Main Street) lift bridge throughout the duration of the repair. To minimize

One of the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States will visit SUNY Brockport to deliver the keynote address at the University’s annual Diversity Conference.

Tim Wise will deliver his presentation, Telling Critical Truths: The Stories We Tell (and Don’t) About Our Nation and Ourselves, at 6 p.m. on March 30 in the Seymour Union Ballroom. Wise will explore the way selective memory shapes the way we understand our national history and our own lives. He’ll discuss the negative impact associated with denying the injustices and inequalities of the past.

Wise is the author of nine books, including his latest, Dispatches from the Race War. He appeared alongside scholar and activist Angela Davis in the 2011 documentary, Vocabulary of Change . More recently, he took part in Chelsea Handler’s Netflix documentary Hello Privilege, It’s Me Chelsea. GCV&M hosting Spring Lecture Series on 19th-century fashion and textiles

Genesee Country Village & Museum is holding its Spring Lecture Series on the topic of 19th-century fashion and textile history on Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It features four presenters speaking on different subjects, culminating with keynote speaker Susan W. Greene, namesake and donor of the Susan Greene Costume Collection housed in the John L. Wehle Gallery at GCV&M.

The opening talk is “Connecting Threads: Western New York Historic Fashion Patterning Coalition” with Brandon W. Brooks, Curator of the John L. Wehle Gallery. Interest in historic fashion, period dramas, and sewing/tailoring has grown dramatically in the past five years. Curator Brandon Brooks hopes to harness this enthusiasm through the creation of a regional historic fashion pattern database. This lecture describes what this database will look like, how to connect museums within this network, and how to increase accessibility to these collections with the ultimate goal of linking the public with historic fashion and garment resources.

Next is “Programming the Future: How a Loom Paved the Way for Modern Computing” with Ben Falter, Director of Education, Ontario County Historical Society. In 1804, Joseph Marie Jacquard patented a device called the Jacquard Machine. This machine was attached to looms and could be used to produce complicated patterns more easily in woven products thanks to a chain of punch cards that manipulated the control rods. Little could anyone know at the time, the Jacquard Machine would eventually result in today’s computers. This talk will synthesize the work of scholars and historians with examples from the collections of the Ontario County Historical Society in order to present a window into an often-overlooked textile device.

The third talk is “A Monstrous Elegance of Women: Fashion as Weaponry in the 19th Century” with Chantal Filson, GCV&M Costume Shop Supervisor. Take a whirlwind tour of self-defense in the 1800s, reviewing accessories and garments used to repel unwanted attention and enforce personal space. Weapons of mass consumption utilized by both society ladies and criminals

alike changed perception, industry, and law through martial arts, diamonds, danger, and more.

The keynote presentation is “Calico, Homespun, and the Sturdy Pioneer” with Susan W. Greene, author, collector, lecturer, weaver, and historian. She will present an exploration of the meaning of the terms “calico” and “homespun,” and focus on the examples of the three Alfred, NY women who worked as weavers in the mid-19th century, based on primary resources. Three dedicated and thoughtful women

These three women live in Brockport and they all have unique names: Scarlett, Taysie and Cilla. I have known them for quite a while, and I’d like everyone else to be introduced to them.

Scarlett developed the Community Hygiene Bank (CHB) in our area in 2017. It provides daily hygiene items such as toothbrushes, deodorants, paper towels, toilet paper and cleaning products for individuals and families who are not able to afford these most basic health care needs. The CHB was originally located in a church across from Wegmans which closed in 2021, but it is now housed at Jubilee Christian Church in Clarkson, where she continues this “Mission” for the surrounding Brockport school district and adjacent areas. The Community Hygiene Bank continues to thrive. She asks for donations from individuals, area churches, local businesses and organizations around the area. The CHB is totally operated by volunteers. Many college students help her out, as well as people across our community from high schoolers to seniors. Taysie and Cilla are two amazing women who thought about how many people in our area are underserved and need help. They came up with a great way to help people not only locally, but also included people in Albion, Clarendon, and Rochester with the Community Clothesline in Brockport.

National debt

The glaring headline of Mr. Mundy’s warning against increasing the national debt (Westside News, March 19) requires mirrors, not windows, to understand. If he were to look in the mirror, he would see that huge tax cuts for the rich were the pride and joy of the early days of the previous administration, increasing the national debt by more than 40% over four years! Not only did his party’s fiscal policy benefit the rich exponentially, but it exacerbated the great divide between the very rich and the rest of us! Most economists would argue that this discrepancy causes far greater harm to our financial well-being than does the national debt. So, the answer to our national debt is not to decrease vital support programs at a time of political, social, and financial unrest, but as our current president has proposed, to make everyone pay their fair share!

Biden Administration working to reduce debt

I want to thank Harold Mundy for his letter to Westside News (March 19). Mr. Mundy gave a fairly accurate picture of the national debt. I think what Mr. Mundy left out was some of the positive things that the Biden Administration is doing to reduce the debt and deficit. Last October, the Treasury Department reported that the federal budget deficit fell by over $1 trillion in fiscal year 2022. President Biden’s proposed budget for next year will reduce the deficit by about $2.9 trillion over the next ten years, as Mr. Mundy pointed out. Reducing the deficit, as Mr. Mundy stated, means going into debt at a slower rate. Slowing the rate of going into debt is the first step in cutting the interest rate and the debt.

Another thing the Biden Administration is doing to cut our debt is reduce our dependence on foreign manufacturing. Again, as Mr. Mundy points out, almost everything you buy is manufactured in China. The Chips and Science Act (H.R. 4346), which was signed into law last year, will provide for the research, development and manufacturing of microchips in the U.S. instead of China. This will reduce our dependence on China and improve our trade balance. Almost every Republican in the House, including Claudia Tenney, voted against this legislation. That is, most Republicans voted to keep the U.S. dependent on Asia, and especially China, in the manufacturing of microchips. Manufacturing chips in this country will improve our trade balance and decrease our deficit (i.e. we won’t be spending money on goods made overseas). While the deficit and debt are still too high, the Biden Administration and Democrats are working to reduce both.

Loves chin scritches and head rubs (usually when he gets his wet food). His big, precious eyes will melt your heart! Has a really gentle and sweet meow that he uses whenever the wet food comes out. Ok around calm dogs. Has had bladder issues in the past and got a “roto-rooter” procedure years ago. Neutered but not updated on vaccines.

Brody - orange tabby male. About 13 years old. Used to be feral but has made a lot of progress! Isn’t big on pets but will let you get pretty close! He’s still very gentle and has never hissed or swatted or anything, just scurries away. Really just likes to chill in a cat tree and take naps. Would probably have to be an only pet to really come around, but still good around other animals. Neutered but not up to date on vaccines. Sissy - brown/orange tabby female. About 12.5 years old now. Loves head scritches and belly rubs. Definitely craves attention but on her own time. Will rub up against your legs and will stretch on her back legs to get head rubs. Has a funny obsession with slippers. Low maintainance and doesn’t require much other than some brushing of her coat in the warmer months. Spayed but not updated on vaccines.

Good with dogs and other cats but may need time to warm up to them. It’ll take her a few days to come out of her shell, but once she does, she’ll snuggle right up to you and become your best friend!

Gaming and e-sports have evolved to improve physical and mental activity along with critical thinking skills.
