Sgt. Nicholas J. Reid Post Office Building at a dedication ceremony on October 18. It has been nearly two years since Reid lost his life in Landstuhl, Germany, the result of injuries suffered in a December 9, 2012 explosion of an IED in Sperwan, Afghanistan. Reid, who was 26 years old at the time of his death, was a 2004 graduate of Brockport High School, the son of Ken and Dorothy Reid and brother of Susan Reid of Brockport. Reid joined the US Army in 2006 as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician and was on his second tour in Afghanistan. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His funeral service was held with full military honors on December 29, 2012 and he is interred at Lakeview Cemetery, Town of Sweden. Representative Louise Slaughter sponsored the bill re-naming the post office and it was signed into law by President Barack Obama on June 9 of this year. The dedication ceremony was attended by Reid’s family and friends, US Army representatives, members of the Patriot Guard, SUNY Brockport ROTC Honor Guard and community members. The Brockport Vet’s Club hosted a small reception following the ceremony. “We are very proud of Nick,” said Vets Club Vice President Roy Heise. “He paid the ultimate price as a true American. He’s a hero and he’s one of ours.” by Leisa Strabel for Westside News Inc.

The $25 million project begins with the cafeteria construction at the Junior/Senior High School and underground infrastructure work at the Elementary School. The project includes expanding security at both school entrances, replacing the roof on both schools, updating the heating and ventilation systems in both buildings, and improving lighting on both campuses. The Junior/Senior High will also have classrooms redesigned. The Elementary
School will have water distribution issues addressed and the bus loop and parking lot redesigned. The project should take one and one-half years to complete, finishing in the summer of 2016. The main push of construction will occur in the summer of 2015 with both campuses closed to the community and staff. See a photo from the groundbreaking ceremony online at www.westsidenewsny.com.

Eaddy sets school mark for rushing Rangers fall short of playoffs by Warren Kozireski Spencerport’s football team did all they could do on the final weekend of the regular season defeating Fairport 2819, but did not get the help they needed in other games and were eliminated from the postseason on a tiebreaker. Senior Tajh Eaddy rushed for 260 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 29 carries to lead the Rangers offense and break the school record for career rushing yards held by Trent Egenlauf. The new record is 1,197 yards. Fairport took their first possession down the field on a 60 yard scoring drive to take what would prove to be their only lead of the game. On the Rangers’ second possession, they marched down the field in 12 plays, including a third down 16-yard gain by Eaddy, before he scampered in on an 11-yard burst also on third down. Jordan Swilley’s extra point tied the game 7-7. On their next possession, Tahj Snow took a doublehandoff 68 yards for the touchdown to make it 14-7 Rangers. The Red Raiders marched right back down the field to score, but their extra point attempt was blocked allowing Spencerport to hold a 14-13 advantage. On the first play after the second half kickoff, Eaddy took a right sweep 74 yards for the score and a 21-13 lead. With Fairport at the Rangers 31 yard line and driving, they fumbled the ball on a missed exchange on fourth down and inches with the Rangers Enzo Sacchetti recovering.
After a Rangers interception, Fairport took advantage of the short field to score, but their two-point conversion attempt failed making it 21-19 Rangers. In the fourth quarter, Chris Cottom ended one Fairport drive with an interception and John Feeney helped end another forcing an incompletion with his pressure on the quarterback. The Rangers then extended their lead to 28-19 on a nine-play drive capped by a Snow five-yard touchdown run off left tackle. Alton Jones, Jr. ended the next Fairport drive with another interception and the Rangers ran out the clock. Eaddy and Snow combined for 396 yards rushing in the contest and the Rangers gained 454 yards on the ground total. “It’s really not me, but the strength of our offensive line,” Eaddy said of the unit of center Anthony Muscatella, guards Lucien Brisson and Michael Palluconi plus tackles Robert Winter and Vitally Gurman. “They are the best in Monroe County and our “D” came up clutch today. Nobody can stop us offensively, but it is bittersweet being our last game on our home field.” The Rangers needed help from any one of three other games on the same night, but every team in contention with them for the final playoff spot won, eliminating them. Seventeen seniors were honored prior to the game: Eaddy, Nick Paxson, Sacchetti, Landon Lussier, Cory O’Connor, Chris DiGuardi, Ben Perrone, Chris Tran, Branden Williams, Kris Concepcion, Steven Bischoff, Brisson, Brandon DiNatale, Zack Fedeli, Winter, Jake Suydam and Muscatella.

Puppies adopted - Hamlin’s “Lucky 13” puppies found their forever homes on Friday, October 17. Their mom, Dena, was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Ohio when found to be pregnant. Pilots for Paws found Hamlin’s Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter willing to take her in. Volunteers in the shelter helped Dena give birth and care for her 13 puppies, who have thrived by thorough and well-organized attention. Dave Maynard, top left, runs the Hamlin Dog Shelter, and Daniel Drennan, bottom left, is the pilot who flew Dena to this area from Ohio. Photo by Dianne Hickerson.

TO EACH, HIS OR HER OWN According to Jessica Koth, a spokeswoman for the National Funeral Directors Association, American families are “making funeral decisions based on different values than previous generations.” For instance, cremations currently are chosen in 43 percent of deaths, and environmentally friendly “green funerals” are becoming increasingly popular. Beyond that, many people are choosing to personalize their funerals with themes, music, readings, food and drink, celebrations, and even customized caskets that more fully reflect their lifestyles and personal tastes than “traditional” funerals are apt to do. Such “creative” funerals, however, are not yet the norm. They are more suited to
those who would rather have their remains transported to the cemetery in a convertible than a hearse. A funeral can and should be as unique as the life that is being celebrated. Don’t feel that you have to have a cookie cutter type of service or that your ideas for a special ceremony are foolish. You shouldn’t feel pressured or rushed into making a decision. THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME wants to help you make the arrangements that you want. For more information, please call 585-392-7100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin (Never known to fail)
Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein, you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother, Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3X). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3X). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. (The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. This prayer must be published and the favor will be granted). A.M.

Time to start thinking of Stockings for Soldiers Though the leaves are starting to fall and the Thanksgiving turkey is not yet carved, it is not too soon to think about the annual Stockings for Soldiers program. Auxiliary Unit #330 of the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post and Walker Brothers Funeral Home in Spencerport and also Perotto/Bartolomeo Funeral Home on Vintage Lane in Greece are again this year organizing the Stocking project. The Auxiliary’s goal this year is filling 1,000 stockings to send to men and women serving overseas who will not be home to spend time with family and friends during the holiday season. These men and women are serving in Korea, Kuwait, Japan, Italy, at the facility at Gitmo, and many sailors out at sea on various ships. Anyone interested in helping with this project can drop off supplies for the stockings at the Legion Post at 691 Trimmer Road during post hours. Phone 352-6691. Supplies need to be at the post office by November 3. Any supplies that may be left over from the stockings will be used for the care packages that continue to go out on a monthly basis. Halloween Safety Tips The Orleans County Sheriff ’s Office reminds parents and children to follow these important Halloween safety tips: •Attend organized Halloween events or programs in your community. •If children go door-to-door “Trick or Treating” - they should stay within your neighborhood and only go homes of people known to you. Do not go to houses that are unlighted and never enter a stranger’s home. •Children “Trick or Treating” should travel in groups or be accompanied by a parent, relative, or trusted friend. Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult. •Children should only accept treats that are wrapped or packaged. Parents should examine all treats before allowing their child to consume them. •Children should wear flame-retardant costumes. Costumes should be light in color or at least have reflective tape on them. Children should also carry a flashlight. Make sure that your child’s Halloween mask does not obstruct his or her vision. •Sex Offenders are not required to stay at home on Halloween night unless it is a condition of their Parole or Probation. Registered Sex Offenders residing in Orleans County are listed on the Sheriff ’s Office website. Anyone who suspects treats have been tampered with, can call 9-1-1 and report it. Save the uneaten portion of the treat along with whatever object(s) found. They can be examined by the responding officer. Tampering with any consumer product is a violation of both federal and state laws. Instruct children that damaging another person’s property or causing them injury, however slight, is a crime not a prank. Scott D. Hess Orleans County Sheriff

Steve Fowler, Director of Recreation of the Town of Parma, was recognized (September 25, 2013) for his accomplishments by having Recreation Field #4 on the town hall campus named Fowler Field. About 300 people attended the ceremony which featured many words of acclamation from local dignitaries and other awards. File photographs by Walter Horylev.
Stephen R. Fowler, former Hilton-Parma Recreation Director, 55 The Parma-Hilton community lost one of its leading citizens and biggest advocates for making this a better place to live on October 11. Steve Fowler, long time Recreation Director, never wavered in his commitment to the people he served. Steve spent countless hours on different programs and I suspect was late for dinner many times. His unbridled passion and enthusiasm for his job was an amazing thing to witness. He always wanted to do more for the youngest kids to our oldest seniors. To borrow a famous quote: “Some people say why, Steve said why not.” Steve’s hard work led to the Town of Parma being awarded many grants to help grow the Town Park and add amenities to it. Under his leadership, the Hilton-Parma Recreation and Parks Department became one of the finest in Monroe County. Through his long career Steve Fowler was the recipient of many awards. Those include: 1989 - GVRPS “Professional Excellence” Award; 1991 - “Anne Jenejahn Memorial” Award; 1996 - “Distinguished Professional” GVRPS’ 2004 - Hilton Central School “Friends of Education”; 2013 - Life Time Achievement Award from SUNY Brockport. Steve made a huge commitment to this community and a lot of people thought it was time to give a little back. In 2013 “Fowler Field” was dedicated in Steve’s honor at the Parma Town Park. Steve was many things to many people but most importantly he was a friend to all of us. He wanted the best for us and worked hard to try to make it happen. He was a soft spoken “giant” of a leader who believed our finest days lay ahead. Steve, you will be missed in so, so many ways.

“The Hilton/Parma community gathered together Wednesday, September 25 (2013) to honor Recreation Director Steve Fowler by dedicating Field #4 at the Parma Town Park in his name. Steve was commended for his work, particularly in building a relationship with the Hilton Central School District; his involvement with “Make a Difference Day;” and for starting the “Kites in the Park” program. He also helped the town obtain over one million dollars in grant funding for the Town Park, which was awarded the New York Commissioner Award in 1992
Steve Fowler and the Outstanding Facility Award from the New York State Recreation and Parks Society in 1999. Fowler Field was built in 2009 and designed as a softball field by Mike Whelehan of R.M. Landscape – who volunteered his time and energy. However, the field is multi-purpose and used by many groups including recreation leagues, travel baseball and two scholastic teams from the school district. The town secured a $250,000 state grant in 2008 for the field, which has many impressive features including a special infield surface and has players benches, a home run fence, infield lights and a scoreboard. At the dedication ceremonies Steve said it was an honor to have the field dedicated in his name, particularly, “knowing all the people who worked on it and make the effort to maintain it. It’s a special place.” Stephen R. Fowler died October 11, 2014 at age 55. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Troendle) Fowler; his sons, Michael (Isabella Young), Andrew and Ryan (Amanda Jones) Fowler; his parents, Harry and Marguerite (Justice) Fowler; brothers, Norman (Sue) and Charles (Joanie) Fowler; his sister, Brenda (Richard) Knorr; several aunts, uncles, cousins including his special cousin, Michael (Mary) Justice; and many friends including James Talbot and Mike Whelehan; and his faithful companion “Tully.” Steve was the longtime Recreation Director for the Town of Parma and a charter member of “The Men’s Room.” Services were held Monday, October 20 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Those wishing can contribute to the Hilton Education Foundation in his memory.
Apple Fest Photo Contest entries now on display Entries from the 2014 Hilton Apple Fest Photo Contest are on display at the Parma Public Library, 7 West Avenue, Hilton. The theme this year was “Water Water Everywhere!” and the entrants being true to their directive, found many unique instances of how water impacts their lives and adds interest and beauty to their environment. The display, which includes the First, Second and Third Place Award winners, will be on display in the library gallery through October. This show is the fortythird in a series of exhibits hosted by the Parma Public Library which feature area artists and photographers. For information or to inquire about a show, please call Rosalind Lipomi, Adult Services Librarian, at the Parma Public Library at 392-8350 or visit us on the web at www.parmapubliclibrary.org. NYS Barge Canal listed on the National Register of Historic Places The National Park Service has listed the New York State Barge Canal on the National Register of Historic Places. The designation recognizes the New York State Canal System as a nationally significant work of early 20th century engineering and construction that affected transportation and maritime commerce for nearly half a century. “This recognition from the highest levels of our nation reminds us once again of the essential role New York State and its waterways have played in our country’s development and prominence,” stated Mike Caldwell, regional director for the National Park Service’s Northeast Region. “On behalf of the National Park Service, I am honored to recognize the New York State Barge Canal’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a nationally significant, historic transportation icon.”
October 2014. Erie Canal in Spencerport. Photograph by Kathy Eichorn.
The New York State Barge Canal National Register Historic District is remarkable in its scope and historical integrity. It spans 450 miles and includes the four branches of the state’s canal system: the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and CayugaSeneca canals - all much enlarged versions of waterways that were initially constructed during the 1820s. The nomination evaluated 791 features and included 552 contributing structures and buildings. Built between 1905 and 1918, the Barge Canal is the direct descendent of the Erie Canal and a network of connecting waterways that have been in continuous operation since 1825, playing a pivotal role in the growth and development of the United States. Today, the canal system continues to allow commercial and pleasure vessels to pass from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.

Each year our community makes an effort to help local families in need for the holidays. The project is Cartons for Christmas. Area churches, schools, service organizations, businesses and individuals of all ages lend their support. Last year we served 128 local families (533 people) by providing 8,700 items of food, gift cards and toys for young children. We invite you to participate. Donate food (canned, boxed and bagged), money to purchase perishables, or a toy. Make checks payable to Cartons For Christmas. We cannot distribute expired food. Please check dates before donating. Our Early Drop-off Locations (November 5 to December 4) for non-perishable food items are: Nothnagle Realtors, 85 South Union Street; Spencerport Federal Credit Union, 2775 Spencerport Road. Make a local child smile by providing a toy or gift. Beginning November 5, stop in at one of our two Toy Trees locations: The Unique Shop, 130 South Union Street or Fowler’s Canaltown Wine & Spirits, 377 South Union Street and select an angel from the ‘Toy Tree’. An Open House will be held to accept donations at St. John the Evangelist School building gym, off Martha Street in the Village of Spencerport Friday, December 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. Food cartons will be delivered during the afternoon of Saturday, December 6. This project is sponsored by the Ecumenical Council of area churches. Maureen and Glenn Granger, Coordinators Cartons for Christmas

Hilton High School students Draven Rogers (front) and Andy Hall, along with their teacher Steve Randall, work on a garden they built on the school grounds. The class is growing its own plants and creating decorations for the space as part of a community service project. Provided photo.
Landcape project incorporates many skills for Hilton class Students in Steve Randall’s 12:1:1 class at Hilton High School are doing their part to make the school grounds beautiful. They recently created a garden bordered with six by six timbers that are secured to the ground with rebar, filled it with garden soil and planted mums and 40 tulip bulbs. In the spring, students will plant flowers that they grew from seed in their greenhouse over the winter months. “Some of the students in the class are focusing on the planting and caring of the seedlings while others are doing the labor that involves tools and other equipment, said Randall. The class also created seasonal plywood cutouts in art class that they’ve added to the garden for decoration. The project has a service component as well. In years past they have made wood duck nesting boxes that were placed around a nearby marsh and bluebird houses were built and added to the north edge of the high school property. Last year the class even trained a guide dog puppy. “This year we are beautifying the school grounds and will also be participating in a project to introduce a new blight-resistant strain of chestnut trees, explained Randall. The class will soon begin growing the chestnut tree seedlings provided by the American Chestnut Foundation in their classroom nursery. Provided information

CREDIT CARD COMMON SENSE
SAT. NOV. 8, 2014
2:00 P.M.
Before a lender will approve your mortgage loan, you must have a good credit rating, enough money in the bank for the down payment and settlement costs, and a stable employment situation. People who have just qualified for a mortgage loan are usually in good financial shape. If you have just bought a new house don't be surprised if you receive a lot of offers from retail stores and other credit card companies offering you pre-approved revolving credit. Be careful about accepting too many of these offers! New homeowners often use most of their savings to buy their home. With all of the immediate credit available, it may be very tempting to just say, "charge it" to purchase new furniture or linens for the house and find yourself in debt very quickly. It takes discipline to reach the goal of home ownership-- and it takes that same kind of discipline to maintain financial health after you leave the settlement table.
