Riga Cemetery provides a tribute and honor to local heroes At the September 21 Riga Cemetery Board meeting, the board voted to honor those service men and women (police - local, county, state, firemen and first responders) who provide a critical service to the community the opportunity to purchase a burial plot in the Riga Cemetery at the same discounted price currently offered to veterans. The Board believes the Riga Cemetery is the only cemetery in the area that now provides a discounted burial plot price to veterans, police, firemen and first responders. For over two hundred years, a plot of land located in Riga Centre has served as the resting place for many of Riga’s early pioneers. Riga Cemetery, located on a slope near the corner of Churchville-Riga Road (Route 36) and Chili-Riga Center Road (Route 33A), is a peaceful, well taken care of cemetery with a rich history. The creation of a Riga cemetery can trace back to the year 1806 when its first pioneers entered West Pulteney (now called the Town of Riga). By November of 1806, the Congregational Society of West Pulteney was formed at Riga Centre. This religious society initiated the search and creation of a cemetery. The society purchased one acre of land from Amasa Frost - located approximately 220 yards north of the present day intersection of Chili-Riga Center Road and Riga-Mumford Road. By 1808, the land became the society’s burial ground. However, by June of 1811, the burial ground became abandoned because the road leading to the

cemetery was discontinued. The society then purchased a new one acre plot of land from Amasa Frost for $20. A subscription taken allowed 45 adults to donate a total of $28.90 to cover the cost. The balance went to pay for fencing the property; now the present-day location of the Riga Cemetery. In November of 1813, the Riga Congregational Church members voted to disinter the bodies in the former burial ground and place them into the new cemetery. From the records, it appears that about ten individuals were removed from the site including Richard Church, father of Elihu and Samuel Church (founder of the Village of Churchville) and the first person to die in the Town of Riga. For some seventy-nine years, the members of the Riga Congregational Church had the task of taking care of the cemetery. Then in 1887, an organization called the Riga Cemetery Association officially assumed the duties of caretakers of the cemetery. Today, this organization still exists and all residents in the Town of Riga owe a debt of gratitude for the love and devotion they have given to the eternal home of many of its ancestors. The Riga Cemetery currently has a section of burial plots reserved for veterans and their spouses at a discounted price. This price is for the purchase of a plot for one person and provides burial plot ground maintenance in perpetuity. To inquire about a burial plot or for general information about the Riga Cemetery, contact Eleanor Filowick, President of the Independent NonProfit Riga Cemetery at 303-4638. Provided information

Strong West hosts second annual Holiday Party in conjunction with Seymour Library by Kristina Gabalski There were many happy young faces at Seymour Library in Brockport Saturday, December 12, as Strong West held its community holiday party complete with crafts, stories, treats and a visit from Santa and his elf. This was the second year Strong West hosted the community celebration, but the first time it took place at the Seymour Library. “It gives us an opportunity to give back to a community that has really welcomed us with open arms,” said URMC’s Karin Gaffney Christensen. “We feel privileged to care for our neighbors and to partner with our friends at the Seymour Library.” The event was free and those attending were encouraged to bring a food or toy item to donate to the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf and the Brockport Toy Shelf. Seymour Library Children’s Librarian Natalie Burch said the library serves as a central location for the holiday event. “It’s a really great program,” she said. “Anytime we can partner with Strong West is great.” She noted Strong West helped out with this past summer’s reading program. The theme was “heroes” and Strong West sent a physician to the library to speak to young participants as part of that event. Additionally on December 12, the library hosted a workshop with Brockport’s Bread Man Chet Fery in the Local History Room.

UNDERTAKING RESPONSIBILITY At the dawn of the 20th century, the local carpenter or cabinetmaker was usually called upon to build coffins, while conveyance of the deceased was performed by a livery man. Beyond that, there was no one left to manage the planning and oversight of a funeral other than the family of the deceased. In time, however, there emerged individuals who took on the responsibility for providing goods and services needed by those planning funerals. This group of professionals came to be known as “undertakers” for their ability to undertake the task of managing funeral details and providing the necessary merchandise. While the term has long since been supplanted

by the title “funeral director,” the responsibilities largely remain the same. Every funeral service has unique circumstances, which requires the expertise that only a licensed and experienced staff can provide. For more information, please call our funeral home. As funeral directors, we have not chosen a job, but rather a way of life that centers on serving families during their time of loss. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

A festively dressed Liam Swain, 3, loves the library and also loved making a holiday ornament during the Strong West Community Holiday Party, held at the Seymour Library in Brockport. K. Gabalski photo. The Emily Knapp Museum presented the event and featured the making of holiday bread. Participants were able to take away a container of bread to bake at home. Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Claus made a visit to the Local History Room to read holiday stories and collect letters to Santa - an event also presented by the Emily Knapp Museum.

by Kristina Gabalski As the name implies, it’s a holiday tradition that has been happening in the Town of Clarkson for decades: the Umpteenth Annual Best Little Christmas Party. This year’s gathering was held Saturday, December 19 at the Clarkson Courthouse and children ages ten and under were welcome to attend with their families. “We do it the same way every year,” said Clarkson Supervisor and Event Chairman Paul Kimball. “It’s a nice little Christmas party.” He said the town is not sure how many years the party has been held, but it’s been more than 50. Children attending enjoyed a story, Christmas Carols, refreshments, a pinata and, of course, a visit from Old St. Nick, who explained the real meaning of the holiday - the birth of the Christ Child - and the significance of giving gifts. “The gifts symbolize the love we have for each other,” Santa told the children. In addition to Christmas presents, which he distributed to each child, Santa had a few requests for himself. “You can leave me a ham and cheese sandwich,” he told one child, “I like a dill pickle too, sliced the long way.” St. Nick also requested carrots for his reindeer and asked one little girl for chocolate chip cookies. From another child he requested an onion, “... for Rudolph. It makes his nose glow,” Santa explained. The courtroom was festooned with Christmas decorations, including a very special holiday tree. Supervisor Kimball explained that the ornaments have been donated by Clarkson families over the years. Some of the ornaments are decades old and are personalized with the name of the donating fam-

If you do not appoint a Designated Driver, one will be appointed for you!

Ogden Police Chief Christopher Mears, a 20-year veteran of the Ogden Police Department, was sworn in as chief in June of 2015, having taken over for former Chief Doug Nordquist, who retired in May. Chief Mears is the tenth person to hold that position in the history of the department. Chief Mears hopes that everyone has an enjoyable New Years and suggests that if the celebrating involves alcohol that either a designated driver or a taxi is used. A person who gets behind the wheel after drinking can be a problem everyone pays for. Police departments everywhere will be on the lookout for anyone who should not be driving.

The New York State Canal Corporation has announced twelve upstate municipalities, including Brockport, will receive a total of $1 million in grants from the Canal Corporation as part of the $2.25 billion in awards that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Councils (REDC) are providing to spur economic growth throughout New York State. The Village of Brockport will receive $75,000 for phase one of the Brockport Rowing and Canal Development Project, which will be located on a Canal Corp parcel of land just north of the canal and the Park Avenue Bridge at the intersection of Fayette Street and Lyman Street. “I am thrilled,” Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman tells the Suburban News. “We’ve been trying to do this for a couple of years.” The grant will help cover the cost of developing the infrastructure needed to support recreational and competitive rowing programs in Brockport along the western section of the Erie Canal. The village will work with the NYS Canal Corporation to develop the project, which will allow the Village to continue its development of canal-related activities and attractions integral to economic development goals related to canal tourism, officials say. “I think this has great potential to bring to the area not only a recreational activity that appeals to a wide age group, but also an increased use of the canal, and the

tourism and traffic to our downtown that will follow in its wake,” Mayor Blackman says. Matching funds are coming from donations - a rowing shell, oars and cash from a private donor; BISCO; funds raised from the Big Tent Craft Beer Event at Low Bridge High Water; and in-kind labor from the village’s Department of Public Works, the Mayor explains. “The project is a two-year one which also gives us time to organize Brockport Rowing, a community-based club which will carry the effort forward and grow the sport,” she adds. According to the grant application, the development of the parcel will include: clearing of underbrush and removal of some trees; possible infill; construction of an earthen ramp leading up to Fayette St.; a cement pad for the boat shed; installation of a shed to house rowing shells, and chain link fencing around the shed as well as boat and oar racks. The Village will also attach a permanent floating dock appropriate for rowing to the north bank of the canal, a few hundred feet east of the Park Avenue Bridge. The grant application noted that many areas east of Rochester have rowing programs including Pittsford, Fairport and Brighton, but currently there are no rowing facilities along the stretch of the canal from Buffalo to Rochester. Additionally, officials at the College at Brockport have expressed interest in and a commitment to establishing a rowing program at the college.

The Village of Brockport has received a State grant to help pay for phase one of a rowing and canal development project. The project would support recreational and competitive rowing programs - the first of their kind on the western section of the Erie Canal. Development would be located just east of the area shown in the photo. K. Gabalski photo.

Opinion Donations to Matt’s Coats for Kids provided warmth to the body and the soul Unseasonably warm weather has tried to fool us this year but we know that it is an early Christmas gift and that the snow will soon remind us that we reside in upstate New York. Our annual free days of coat distribution were held during the first weekend of December and this year Matt’s Coats for Kids collected 630 coats and items of winter wear to share with those who need a helping hand. Of the total coats collected, 355 were given away in the days of distribution with the remainder going to the Open Door Mission, the Willows (Alternatives for Battered Women) and to WDKX who will distribute some to those in need in the Rochester area, as well as some to those in halfway houses. We feel honored to be able to help others in Matthew’s memory. Thank you especially to the following: Brockport Fire Department Company #3, Bill Bird (a community member with a huge heart), Westside News, Jamestown Container, (Buffalo location), The UPS Store of Brockport, Vistaprint, Donuts Delite of Rochester, 58 Main (Marc and Jon), Mark’s Pizzeria of Hamlin, Wendell Grimm, Barb Lehning and Jean Leverenz, THRIVENT Financial, the volunteers on distribution days, the 31 drop sites who gave us space and hosted as drop-sites this year, and to all those who donated coats and other items to brighten someone else’s day. Special thanks to five special people: Ev and Eleanor Bauch and Kathy Begemann, Matt’s Grandparents and his Aunt/Godmother who always support him and the causes in his memory; Doug Leidig, my husband and father of our three wonderful boys who canvassed the county picking up the donations and boxes; and to Adam Leidig, Matt’s youngest brother who travelled to Buffalo and somehow transported 35 flat boxes in a 2001 Dodge Neon for his brother Matthew. This holiday season, please remember the elderly and those who may be alone this Christmas or having a difficult or challenging time due to the loss of a loved one. All of us are a part of a big patchwork quilt that is even more beautiful when joined together. To quote my favorite movie, “No man is a failure who has friends.” Give the greatest gift this Christmas season - your friendship. Blessings, love and the peace of God to all of you. Merry Christmas! Adequate Insurance Coverage It is important to keep your homeowners insurance policy current by updating and increasing its value as you change, modify, or make additions to your home. The building block of any homeowner's insurance policy is the amount of coverage on the house and its contents. This figure should be based on the replacement value or what it would cost to rebuild the structure. The replacement value often changes over the years. Insuring for less than the full value is false economy, and refers to valuation no longer available in most policies. Nearly all insurance companies now require homeowner's policies to be insured at 100% of actual replacement cost in order to cover a loss completely. Most companies also offer at least "extended replacement cost" to cover inflationary cost increases for construction and the added costs of loss clean up. Choosing an inflation guard clause for your policy that automatically raises your coverage in step with rising prices is another way you can protect yourself. You should evaluate your insurance coverage based on the value of your house and contents at least every two years to make sure that you are adequately covered.

The Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 and its Auxiliary took part in the national Wreaths Across America project in early December by placing wreaths on the graves of Mary Noone and her son, Harvey, who died in WWI in France. Their graves are located in the Churchville Cemetery. Assisting local Legion members was C/SMSgt Rebecca Hartman, Civil Air Patrol. Mary Noone donated money in her will for the building of the Riga Legion Post and it is named in honor of her son. Legion leaders say this year they decided to place a wreath on the grave of the

Post’s namesake as part of the national project. The Wreaths Across America project began about 30 years ago with the mission to remember, honor and teach. Each year a wreath is placed on every grave at Arlington National Cemetery on a designated Saturday in December, and now WAA partners with groups like the Civil Air Corps to place wreaths on the graves of veterans across the United States. Legion members say the wreaths placed on the Noone graves as part of Wreaths Across America are in addition the wreaths placed by the Auxiliary at each cemetery, Churchville Elementary and the library every year.

Wheatland-Chili presses Eagles by Warren Kozireski Visiting Wheatland-Chili used fullcourt pressure throughout to force multiple turnovers and hold Kendall to only six second half points in their 38-16 girls basketball win. The Eagles and Wildcats were tied 4-4 with sophomore Lyndsay Wright hitting a jumper and on a drive to the basket, but Wheatland-Chili ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run and a 13-4 advantage. Taylor ReQua scored on a bank shot to begin the second quarter, but the Wildcats opened their lead up with a 9-1 run to lead 22-7 prior to a Kendall three-

pointer by Taylor Rutland. Both teams struggled to find any offense in the third stanza as Kendall was held to a trey by Daniela Volkmar and a free throw by Elizabeth Rath. Rath hit a short jumper late in the fourth for the Eagles’ final points. Wright finished with four points to lead Kendall while Taylor ReQua led with five rebounds to go with her three points. Rath, Rutland and Volkmar all added three points. Kendall, who has beaten Holley and Lyndonville this season, fell to 2-5 at the holiday break. They are on the road for their first three games in 2016.
