Riga Cemetery provides a tribute and honor to local heroes At the September 21 Riga Cemetery Board meeting, the board voted to honor those service men and women (police - local, county, state, firemen and first responders) who provide a critical service to the community the opportunity to purchase a burial plot in the Riga Cemetery at the same discounted price currently offered to veterans. The Board believes the Riga Cemetery is the only cemetery in the area that now provides a discounted burial plot price to veterans, police, firemen and first responders. For over two hundred years, a plot of land located in Riga Centre has served as the resting place for many of Riga’s early pioneers. Riga Cemetery, located on a slope near the corner of Churchville-Riga Road (Route 36) and Chili-Riga Center Road (Route 33A), is a peaceful, well taken care of cemetery with a rich history. The creation of a Riga cemetery can trace back to the year 1806 when its first pioneers entered West Pulteney (now called the Town of Riga). By November of 1806, the Congregational Society of West Pulteney was formed at Riga Centre. This religious society initiated the search and creation of a cemetery. The society purchased one acre of land from Amasa Frost - located approximately 220 yards north of the present day intersection of Chili-Riga Center Road and Riga-Mumford Road. By 1808, the land became the society’s burial ground. However, by June of 1811, the burial ground became abandoned because the road leading to the
cemetery was discontinued. The society then purchased a new one acre plot of land from Amasa Frost for $20. A subscription taken allowed 45 adults to donate a total of $28.90 to cover the cost. The balance went to pay for fencing the property; now the present-day location of the Riga Cemetery. In November of 1813, the Riga Congregational Church members voted to disinter the bodies in the former burial ground and place them into the new cemetery. From the records, it appears that about ten individuals were removed from the site including Richard Church, father of Elihu and Samuel Church (founder of the Village of Churchville) and the first person to die in the Town of Riga. For some seventy-nine years, the members of the Riga Congregational Church had the task of taking care of the cemetery. Then in 1887, an organization called the Riga Cemetery Association officially assumed the duties of caretakers of the cemetery. Today, this organization still exists and all residents in the Town of Riga owe a debt of gratitude for the love and devotion they have given to the eternal home of many of its ancestors. The Riga Cemetery currently has a section of burial plots reserved for veterans and their spouses at a discounted price. This price is for the purchase of a plot for one person and provides burial plot ground maintenance in perpetuity. B-B Central School District implements NYSSA Rapid Responder Program “Byron-Bergen Central School District continues to value that our most important priority is keeping our students and staff safe,� said District Superintendent Casey Kosiorek. To that end, the district has added the New York State Sheriff ’s Association (NYSSA) Rapid ResponderŽ Program to their crisis management and emergency preparedness plans. The new program uses cutting-edge technology to give school personnel and all first responders immediate access to emergency response information, enabling clear communication and quick, coordinated action. Rapid Responder, an all-hazards site-based crisis management system, is utilized in schools nationwide and Canada. The system brings school officials and first responders from diverse agencies together on a single digital platform, giving everyone instant access to site-specific emergency response information, including floor plans, aerial views, hazardous material locations, utility shut-off information, evacuation plans and live camera feeds. Byron-Bergen CSD Director of Facilities Michael List said, “We are expanding the dialogue between the district and responders from local law enforcement, fire and medical departments. We have already found areas for improvement that will enable responders to better handle many emergency scenarios in our schools. The new Rapid Responder system helps make that possible.� List added, “We recently completed detailed site visits and are now reviewing all the data. The next
step in implementation will be training and drills with local responders based on different emergency and daily security situations to test all portions of the system.� Implementation of the Rapid Responder Program is part of the district’s solid commitment to safety and security in the schools. Current security for the district includes a comprehensive visitor management system, RaptorŽ, which will utilize visitor background checks, as well as generate ID badges in all three schools and the district office. A large security camera system oversees buildings and grounds, and will now tie into Rapid Responder using their capability to integrate IP based cameras. The district also recently welcomed School Resource Officer Matt Butler to the staff. “In a world of seemingly increased violent incidents, we are proud to put an additional measure in place to ensure everyone’s safety,� said Kosiorek. “I want to thank our team - Mike List, Transportation Coordinator Drew Doll, School Business Official William Snyder, the building principals and Deputy Butler for all their work with the overall safety of the organization, and most recently with the implementation of the NYSSA Rapid Responder Program.� Over 16,000 facilities nationwide have implemented Rapid Responder (www.preparedresponse. com/New-York-Sheriffs-Rapid-Responder-Program. html) which has been SAFETY Act Certified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As the name implies, it’s a holiday tradition that has been happening in the Town of Clarkson for decades: the Umpteenth Annual Best Little Christmas Party. This year’s gathering was held Saturday, December 19 at the Clarkson Courthouse and children ages ten and under were welcome to attend with their families. “We do it the same way every year,” said Clarkson Supervisor and Event Chairman Paul Kimball. “It’s a nice little Christmas party.” He said the town is not sure how many years the party has been held, but it’s been more than 50. Children attending enjoyed a story, Christmas Carols, refreshments, a pinata and, of course, a visit from Old St. Nick, who explained the real meaning of the holiday - the birth of the Christ Child - and the significance of giving gifts. “The gifts symbolize the love we have for each other,” Santa told the children. In addition to Christmas presents, which he distributed to each child, Santa had a few requests for himself. “You can leave me a ham and cheese sandwich,” he told one child, “I like a dill pickle too, sliced the long way.” St. Nick also requested carrots for his reindeer and asked one little girl for chocolate chip cookies. From another child he requested an onion, “... for Rudolph. It makes his nose glow,” Santa explained. The courtroom was festooned with Christmas decorations, including a very special holiday tree. Supervisor Kimball explained that the ornaments have been donated by Clarkson families over the years. Some of the ornaments are decades old and are personalized with the name of the donating fam-

Village of Brockport awarded grant for development and rowing on the canal by Kristina Gabalski The New York State Canal Corporation has announced twelve upstate municipalities, including Brockport, will receive a total of $1 million in grants from the Canal Corporation as part of the $2.25 billion in awards that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Councils (REDC) are providing to spur economic growth throughout New York State. The Village of Brockport will receive $75,000 for phase one of the Brockport Rowing and Canal Development Project, which will be located on a Canal Corp parcel of land just north of the canal and the Park Avenue Bridge at the intersection of Fayette Street and Lyman Street. “I am thrilled,” Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman tells the Suburban News. “We’ve been trying to do this for a couple of years.” The grant will help cover the cost of developing the infrastructure needed to support recreational and competitive rowing programs in Brockport along the western section of the Erie Canal. The village will work with the NYS Canal Corporation to develop the project, which will allow the Village to continue its development of canal-related activities and attractions integral to economic development goals related to canal tourism, officials say. “I think this has great potential to bring to the area not only a recreational activity that appeals to a wide age group, but also an increased use of the canal,
and the tourism and traffic to our downtown that will follow in its wake,” Mayor Blackman says. Matching funds are coming from donations - a rowing shell, oars and cash from a private donor; BISCO; funds raised from the Big Tent Craft Beer Event at Low Bridge High Water; and in-kind labor from the village’s Department of Public Works, the Mayor explains. “The project is a two-year one which also gives us time to organize Brockport Rowing, a communitybased club which will carry the effort forward and grow the sport,” she adds. According to the grant application, the development of the parcel will include: clearing of underbrush and removal of some trees; possible infill; construction of an earthen ramp leading up to Fayette St.; a cement pad for the boat shed; installation of a shed to house rowing shells, and chain link fencing around the shed as well as boat and oar racks. The Village will also attach a permanent floating dock appropriate for rowing to the north bank of the canal, a few hundred feet east of the Park Avenue Bridge. The grant application noted that many areas east of Rochester have rowing programs including Pittsford, Fairport and Brighton, but currently there are no rowing facilities along the stretch of the canal from Buffalo to Rochester. Additionally, officials at the College at Brockport have expressed interest in and a commitment to establishing a rowing program at the college.

Ogden Police Chief Christopher Mears, a 20-year veteran of the Ogden Police Department, was sworn in as chief in June of 2015, having taken over for former Chief Doug Nordquist, who retired in May. Chief Mears is the tenth person to hold that position in the history of the department. Chief Mears hopes that everyone has an enjoyable New Years and suggests that if the celebrating involves alcohol that either a designated driver or a taxi is used. Byron-Bergen Elementary School students pledge to read 25,000 books The third-annual Reading Celebration at Byron-Bergen Elementary School got off to a rollicking start with a farmyard-themed event on November 20. Students played the part, wearing straw cowboy hats, overalls and bandannas. Teachers dressed as cows, pigs and singing farmhands hit the stage to build excitement for the challenge ahead: reading 25,000 books (almost 50 per student) before the end of the school year. Students have consistently surpassed their reading goals since the challenge began in 2013; last year beating their target of 20,000 books by almost 4,000. “Reading really is fun. We want kids to enjoy it and develop the reading habit now while they are young,” said Principal Brian Meister. “The motivation this year is the promise of a very special farm-themed reward in June. We’ll make all their hard work pay off
in an event to remember.” The assembly kicked off with Byron-Bergen parent Alyson Tardy, her back-up teacher/singers and the student population singing and dancing to “Read a Book” - a special version of Taylor Swift’s song “Shake It Off.” Then Assistant Principal Amanda Cook played the starring role in a skit based on “Little Pig Joins the Band,” a favorite children’s book by David Hyde Costello. Things got even more boisterous with an enthusiastic gameshow version of Pictionary, with students trying to guess which favorite books were being represented by teacher-drawn pictures. The festive atmosphere continued with a colorful quartet of Book Fairies (more enthusiastic teachers) who awarded a free book to one child from each class. Provided information

Opinion/Comments Donations to Matt’s Coats for Kids provided warmth to the body as well as the soul Unseasonably warm weather has tried to fool us this year but we know that it is an early Christmas gift and that the snow will soon remind us that we reside in upstate New York. Our annual free days of coat distribution were held during the first weekend of December and this year Matt’s Coats for Kids collected 630 coats and items of winter wear to share with those who need a helping hand. Of the total coats collected, 355 were given away in the days of distribution with the remainder going to the Open Door Mission, the Willows (Alternatives for Battered Women) and to WDKX who will distribute some to those in need in the Rochester area, as well as some to those in halfway houses. We feel honored to be able to help others in Matthew’s memory. Rec. Foundation and town secure $446,145 grant for Sweden Town Park In a partnership that continues to benefit recreational opportunities for Sweden residents and its neighbors, the Sweden Community Recreation Foundation and Town of Sweden have secured a $446,145 grant from the New York State Regional Economic Development Council. The grant will supply the majority of funding for a 2,600 square foot Lodge, new handicapped-accessible playground equipment and a sidewalk to the canal. This is the second time that the foundation has hired grant consultant Stu Brown to pursue major funding for Sweden Town Park enhancements. In 2008, the Foundation used Brown to secure a $300,000 grant on the town’s behalf, helping to fund Nietopski Field, two multi-purpose fields, an outdoor skating rink and various other improvements. All told, the town and foundation have worked together to bring nearly a million dollars’ worth of grants and donations to the Sweden Town Park. The Sweden Park Lodge will be located about mid-park, next to Kepler’s Pond. It will feature a fireplace, kitchen and restrooms. Residents, service organizations, community groups and businesses will have the opportunity to rent the lodge for events of all types – picnics, parties and meetings – year-round. The Sweden/Clarkson Rec-
reation Department will be able to use the Lodge for programming. The grant includes funding for playground equipment to be located next to the Lodge – enhancing the venue for family activities. The Sweden Town Board has long been committed to providing life and healthenhancing recreational opportunities for its residents. Its major accomplishments include the acquisition of the 156-acre park for $1 and arranging the donation of the $3.7 million turn-key Sweden/Clarkson Community Center to the Town. The Sweden Community Recreation Foundation, a registered 501C-3 non-profit organization, believes that social recreation is vital to the physical and mental health of all, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or occupation. Foundation members believe that recreation increases the quality of life not only of individual participants, but the community in general. To that end, the foundation commits to expanding, promoting and funding recreational opportunities for the residents of the greater Sweden community. Kendall Course Option Night showcases academic offerings A highly successful Course Option Night took place November 12 at Kendall Junior/Senior High School. Over 200 people attended the interactive display of courses offered at the school. Jeannine Gallina from the Career and Technical Education (CTE) department of Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES started the evening by highlighting the career opportunities available in the middle skills sector. After the presentation, everyone received the chance to explore the hands-on exhibits. Elementary students up to juniors in high school visited the display booths to find out more about current and new courses being offered. Nineteen staff members were on hand to provide students with information so they can make informed decisions about what courses to take next year. New course offerings connect NYS standards to
students’ interests and include: 21st Century Computer Skills; Video Game Design; International Cooking; Fish and Wildlife Conservation Biology; Intro to Statistics; World History on Film; Woodworking; Robotics; Genocide and CEP 101- Career and Educational Planning. Overall, the evening was a great success, with students and parents in attendance saying that they felt the evening provided much help and information. Principal Carol D’Agostino was pleased with the turnout at the event and comments from attendees. “Course Option Night was a huge success,” she said. “Numerous parents and students expressed how much they appreciated the information that was demonstrated and presented. •Buffalo State junior midfielder Luke Pavone (Churchville-Chili) was named First Team All-SUNYAC in men’s soccer. He led the Bengals with 11 goals including three game-winners in 17 starts and added three assists. •College at Brockport men’s soccer senior forward Peter DiLorenzo was named All-SUNYAC First Team and the Huntley Parker Offensive Player of the Year after he scored 13 goals in 18 games, including a conference-high five game winners, while adding two assists for a total of 28 points on the season, good for second in the conference. DiLorenzo’s 1.56 points per game average, along with his 13 goals and .772 goals per game average, were also good for second in the conference. He led the conference in shots (81) and shots per game (4.50). Senior defense Matt Roorda and junior defense Mark Sylvia as well as senior goalkeeper Casey Sullivan were all named to the Third Team. •Brockport High grad Courtney Hunt was named to the Liberty League Women’s Soccer All-Conference Second Team for the RIT Tigers. She finished fourth on the team in scoring with nine points on three goals and three assists while tallying two game winning goals. •Genesee CC sophomore forward Austin Richardson (Byron-Bergen) was named First Team All-Western New York Athletic Conference in men’s soccer. Richardson scored 20 goals, the third most on the team and added seven assists. •Genesee CC sophomore forward Shawna Adams (Byron-Bergen) was named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American and First Team after she led the country in goals scored with 30, a single-season record for the College. She also led the country in total points with 72, which tied the school record for most points in a season. Also named to the all-region second team was sophomore defender Claudia Passarell (Holley). She helped anchor a defense that posted eight shutout wins this season. Genesee allowed an average of 1.00 goals per game, the fourth best average in the region and 10th best average in the country. •Roberts Wesleyan midfielder Bella Mitrevski (Churchville-Chili) earned a pair of First Team All-America honors. The junior was named to both the NCCAA as well as the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) All-America Teams after she ended the season with a career-
best 45 points (18 goals, 9 assists). She was also named the East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Senior defender Heaven Palamitia earned second team honors and fellow senior, Brittany Houghton, was selected to the third team after finishing her final season second on the team with 24 points (11 goals, 2 assists). •Monroe Community College inducted Brockport High grad Allyn Parrino into its Sports Hall of Fame Oct. 9. The 2011 MCC grad was First Team NJCCA AllAmerican in women’s soccer and lacrosse and was part of two Region III soccer championships and two national titles in lacrosse. •Roberts Wesleyan juniors Malcolm Shaw and Kehinde Aderounmu garnered AllConference nods with Shaw named to the Second Team after leading the Redhawks with 23 points (10 goals, 3 assists) and finishing the year ranked fifth in the East Coast Conference in points and goals while Aderounmu was a Third Team All-East Coast Conference. The defender started in all but one game this season, logging 1,418 minutes to help a backline that held opponents to a .123 shots percentage. •College at Brockport junior forward Chelsea Stahl (Brockport HS) was named Second Team All-SUNYAC in women’s soccer. Sophomore goalkeeper Catherine Eliasson was also named to the Second Team while senior midfielder Courtney Szczesniak was a Third Team choice. •College at Brockport women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Kayla Barber was named SUNYAC co-Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference after she led the league with 4.40 kills per set in conference play. Kayla helped the Golden Eagles to a 9-0 finish in conference play and was tournament MVP for their first volleyball crown in 21 years. Ashley Capone was also a First Team selection, while sophomore setter Noelle Poloncarz was a Second Team choice. Sam Holdredge, Kathleen Irwin and Brianna Richardson were all Third Team picks. •College at Brockport head volleyball coach Steve Pike was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year after coaching the Golden Eagles to a 33-1 and their sixth overall SUNYAC Championship. This is his second time earning this prestigious award, the first being in 2005 while the head coach at Potsdam. •Junior Gary Mesesina of the College at Brockport was named First Team All-SUNYAC in men’s cross country.

Visiting Wheatland-Chili used full-court pressure throughout to force multiple turnovers and hold Kendall to only six second half points in their 38-16 girls basketball win. The Eagles and Wildcats were tied 4-4 with sophomore Lyndsay Wright hitting a jumper and on a drive to the basket, but Wheatland-Chili ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run and a 13-4 advantage. Taylor ReQua scored on a bank shot to begin the second quarter, but the Wildcats opened their lead up with a 9-1 run to lead 22-7 prior to a Kendall three-pointer by
Taylor Rutland. Both teams struggled to find any offense in the third stanza as Kendall was held to a trey by Daniela Volkmar and a free throw by Elizabeth Rath. Rath hit a short jumper late in the fourth for the Eagles’ final points. Wright finished with four points to lead Kendall while Taylor ReQua led with five rebounds to go with her three points. Rath, Rutland and Volkmar all added three points. Kendall, who has beaten Holley and Lyndonville this season, fell to 2-5 at the holiday break. They are on the road for their first three games in 2016.
