“Ride for Missing Children” rolls through the area The 18th Annual “Ride for Missing Children,” an awareness and fundraising event for the Rochester office of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, NY (NCMEC/NY), took place on Friday, May 18. Over 200 seasoned and beginner cyclists, led by law enforcement, made the 100-mile bicycle trek around Monroe County beginning and ending at the Total Sports Experience in Gates. Along the way, riders visited area schools including Churchville-Chili’s Chestnut Ridge Elementary School, all four Spencerport elementary schools and all five Hilton schools with Village Elementary School serving as a rest/lunch stop. Riders commit to meet fundraising goals, to train, and to ride. The goal is to honor and bring awareness to the plight of missing children and to help support the NCMEC/NY prevention education efforts which serve schools in the Greater Rochester area. Hilton and Spencerport each had a team of riders. The Hilton Cadet Team

has raised $1,815 so far with members teachers Susan Huppe, Dyan Menges and Principal Dr. Ben Rudd. The Spencerport Ranger Riders have raised $1,285 so far with members Tom Burger, Anthony Musa, Jamie Lissow, Kim Stacy, Gregory Kincaid and Christine Kincaid. At the schools, students were led by NCMEC/NY staff and volunteers in cheering on the riders as they arrived and departed. Students also enjoyed a special visit from Clicky, the NetSmartz Internet safety spokes-robot. NetSmartz is a program of NCMEC/NY and teaches children how to be safer online. The 2018 “Ride for Missing Children” has raised over $98,000 as of press time and donations are still being accepted. Those wishing to support the bicyclists in their efforts to raise funds for the Center can make secure donations online at www.ride. missingkids.com/rochester.

Participants rode their bikes past the cheering crowds of students and staff awaiting their arrival at Village Elementary School. Provided photo.

Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Special Olympics New York announces that the Law Enforcement Torch Run season has officially kicked off. This state-wide event takes place every year from April through June. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a time honored tradition of over 30 years, led and orchestrated by the “Guardians of the Flame,” which includes over 6,000 law enforcement personnel from 470 agencies throughout New York State whose ultimate goal is to raise funds and awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics New York. Special Olympics New York will host approximately 60 individual Law Enforcement Torch Run events throughout various communities across the state; congregating with local dignitaries, sponsors and celebrities, and making appearances at upcoming regional and local competitions. Members of local law enforcement will carry the “Flame of Hope” on June 1. The run will begin at Gates Town Hall

at 10 a.m. and travel more than five miles to end near the Liberty Pole in Downtown Rochester at noon. “The Law Enforcement Torch Run isn’t just about running with a torch … Our goal has always been to bring awareness to the talents, hopes and dreams of the athletes of Special Olympics,” said June Worden, Retired New York State Police, current Law Enforcement Torch Run State Director of NY and Special Olympics New York Board of Directors member. “Moving forward we hope to unify all athletes, regardless of skill level, to inclusion. In doing so our world will be a better place both on and off the playing fields.” The Law Enforcement Torch Run’s finale premiers at the ever illuminating Opening Ceremonies at Special Olympics New York’s State Summer Games. This year’s State Summer Games are hosted by Siena College in Loudonville, NY on June 15 through 17.

Brockport launches five new graduate programs Variety of online and traditional offerings available in the fall The College at Brockport, State University of New York, is adding five new programs to its expanding portfolio of graduate education offerings. New this spring: •Aging Studies, (Graduate Certificate) Offers a foundation of inter-professional education for students seeking a specialization in aging and for those currently working with older adults who want to enhance their knowledge and experience with academic credentials. This 15 credit graduate certificate is offered in a hybrid format that features both online and face-to-face courses. As society ages, there is significant demand for this skill set in all service-providing industries, including health care, fitness/wellness and housing. Launching this fall: •Business Administration, (MBA) Develop the skills necessary to become a dynamic business manager. Our 36 credit, part-time program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)—the gold standard in business education. It’s flexible and convenient, as it’s offered online with two oneday residencies per semester. These residencies are scheduled well in advance and are designed to enrich the learning experience and create networking opportunities. •Community Health Education, (MSEd) This 100 percent online, 42 credit program specializes in preparing community health educators—including those seeking careers and advancement in hospitals and health systems, social service organizations and government agencies. Graduates will be well equipped to sit for the National Health Education Specialist exam; leading to the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) designation. •Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, (TESOL), (MSEd, Advanced Certificate)

This program equips teachers with the tools to help English learners meet challenging content standards. Those already holding initial or professional-level New York state teacher certification (B-2, 1-6, or 7-12) who are seeking to become certified in ESOL for the first time are eligible for this program, which combines rigorous academic study with structured field experiences. Candidates can earn a master’s degree (30 credits) or an advanced certificate (18 credits). The program is offered online or face-to-face. •Family Nurse Practitioner, (MS, Advanced Certificate) This program will prepare practicing nurses for advanced practice roles as family nurse practitioners, building on the fundamental principles of nursing to ensure the provision of high quality care. This 42 credit, two-year, full-time master’s program combines online coursework with face-toface sessions (three Friday and Saturdays each semester) to train students as primary care providers within their community. An advanced certificate option is available for nurse practitioners who wish to be eligible for licensure as a family nurse practitioner. A personalized gap analysis will be completed after admittance to determine appropriate coursework. •Public Administration, Poverty Studies emphasis, (MPA) Students can engage in a program that gives leaders and managers the problem-solving skills that are required in today’s workforce. This 39 credit program is accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA). Applying theory and practice, the program focuses on preparing students for work in state and municipal management, health care management, public safety, nonprofit management, and agencies addressing poverty alleviation. health care along with substance abuse and pharmacy operations. We have to offer integrated, coordinated care, including transportation, assistance with housing, health education … and continue to work toward breaking down barriers to quality health care that our rural population faces.” In her spare time, Ms. Pettibon is an avid runner who also enjoys biking and hiking. An accomplished half-marathoner, she is looking forward to exploring our region’s hiking and biking trails, Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes Wine Trail.

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia)[center] poses with veterans of the U.S. Air Force at a memorial honoring Air Force veterans during last year’s Patriot Trip to Washington D.C. Provided photo.

Hawley welcomes local veterans to attend 11th annual Patriot Trip Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,IBatavia) announced that his 11th annual Patriot Trip to Washington D.C. will take place September 20 through September 23. Over 100 veterans and their family members participated in the 2017 trip, which included stories of valiant service members and valuable time spent together reflecting on the courage and dedication exhibited by our nation’s veterans. Hawley is a longtime supporter of veterans and has served on the Assembly Veterans’ Affairs Committee since 2006. Only veterans who have never been on the trip before may sign up now. After August 1, veterans who have been on the trip before and those living outside of the 139th Assembly District may apply. The approximate cost of the trip is $400, which includes meals, transportation and admission to the memorials. “The Patriot Trip is one of my favorite events throughout the year,” Hawley said. “This trip was inspired by Mike Paduzak, a World War Two veteran, who asked me to come together with local veterans and host a trip to Washington D.C. Through the

experiences of my father, veterans I have met during previous year’s trips, and my own service in the military, I have gained a tremendous understanding and admiration for the sacrifices endured by our veterans. It is for these reasons that I continue the Patriot Trip each year and have solidified it as one of the staples of my service to our community.” Attractions Hawley plans to visit this year on the trip include: White House, U.S. Capitol, WWII Memorial, Gettysburg, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Iwo Jima – The Marine Corps Memorial, American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial, Air Force Memorial, 911 Memorial at the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, including the Changing of the Guard, Wreath Laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Saints hang on; Buck has four-point effort by Warren Kozireski Churchville-Chili led 5-0 at halftime and 6-0 in the first minute of the second half before hanging on for a 7-5 boy’s lacrosse win at Spencerport in the first round of the Section V playoffs. The win avenged the Saints 17-4 loss to the Rangers in the regular season. “They beat us earlier this year for the first time in 12 years, so I told our guys to make sure they came out focused and they did,” Saints head coach Donald Benedict said. Junior Brandon Clark staked the Saints to a 1-0 lead as he netted the rebound at 3:45 of the first period after senior Jacob Buck hit the post with his shot. Junior Will Zimmerman then scored twice within a 2:41 span. The first came after senior Joe Charnley found him all alone in front with a great pass; the second after he faked the defender left and went back to his right. Senior Corey Yunker made it 4-0 C-C after taking a pass from Buck with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Yunker netted the only goal for either team in the second stanza at 9:41 after going one-on-one with a defender for a 5-0 lead. Churchville-Chili, meanwhile, used great defense by senior long sticks Joe Charnley, Jake Fellows, Ryan Terhaar with juniors Kenny Carr, Clark and Braeden Schmidt to keep the Rangers offense at bay throughout the first half. The Saints extended the lead to 6-0 as Buck raced out from behind the net and beat the goalie just 50 seconds into the second half.

Spencerport finally got on the board at 1:19 of the third quarter as senior Owen VanWie scored with an assist from classmate Mark Schnauber. The Saints countered seven minutes later as freshman Patrick Mitchell found Buck, who scored between the legs of the goalie while a man-up to make it 7-1. But the Rangers would not go quietly as they netted the next four goals. Senior Jonathan Agness and sophomore Todd Smith each scored 40 seconds apart near the end of the third quarter to trail 7-3. In the fourth, Jack Lehtonen took a pass from Zach Edwards and found the net at 4:51 of the fourth and, just 49 seconds later, Smith tallied from Agness to close the deficit to just two goals at 7-5. But Saints seniors Buck and Yunker played keep-a-way and held the ball over the final minute to secure the win and advance them to the quarterfinals against defending state champion Victor.

Rangers announce new basketball coach Spencerport Central Schools is proud to announce that Richard Vleck has been named as the Rangers new Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. Vleck previously served as the JV/Program Assistance Coach at Greece Odyssey where he was instrumental in helping Odyssey win the Section V Class C Championship this past season. A graduate of Syracuse University, he is a physical education teacher at Rochester Academy Charter School. Provided information

Choate, Sack hat tricks help Rangers survive by Warren Kozireski A perfectly executed give-and-go between juniors Camryn Sack and Erin Coykendall with less than two minutes remaining helped Spencerport overcome a two-goal second half deficit and defeat WebsterSchroeder 11-10 in the first round of the Section V girl’s lacrosse playoffs. It was a see-saw affair throughout as neither team led by more than three goals at any point. The Warriors scored twice over the first 1:48 of the contest sandwiching a tally by Rangers’ junior Natalie Choate. The Rangers then netted four consecutive goals as Sack found Coykendall in front at 5:56 of the first half. Coykendall then set up in her office behind the net and fed scoring passes to first Choate and then Sack just 40 seconds apart to make it 4-2 Rangers. Choate completed her hat trick on a free possession play just 10:36 into the game. But Schroeder scored four goals before halftime and limited the Rangers to just two more Choate tallies as they cut the Spencerport lead to 7-6 at the half.

The Warriors opened the second half by scoring four of the first five goals - a Hailey Rooney tally from Sack the only exception - to take a 10-8 lead. But Coykendall came up big on the draws over the final ten minutes to help the Rangers come back. Sack scored an unassisted goal at 16:27 of the second half to cut the Rangers deficit to one before Coykendall converted a free possession when she was bowled over by the goalie 71 seconds later to tie the game 10-10. Both teams had their chances over the next five-plus minutes before the give-andgo with Sack converting the Coykendall return pass to complete her hat trick at 23:06 for the 11-10 Rangers lead. Coykendall won the ensuing draw, which allowed her, Sack and Paige Pohleven to literally run off the remaining 1:54 of the contest and secure the win. The second-seeded Rangers advanced to play third-seed Canandaigua in the Class B Section V playoff semi-finals.

Senior Quinlan Ignaszak threw five innings of three-hit shutout ball and sophomore Troy Leibert drove in three runs and earned the save with two innings of hitless relief as Brockport topped Greece Arcadia 7-0 on senior day. Leibert broke up the 0-0 game with a one-out solo home run to left in the fifth inning. The Blue Devils broke the game open with a six-run sixth as senior Cole Penders led off with a single and took third one out later on a hit-and-run single by classmate Ashton Scott. Senior Frank Lauricella drove in Penders with a bad-hop RBI single to right and Scott later scored from third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a comebacker to make it 3-0. Nick Nealon reached on another throwing error before Leibert drove in two runs with a double. He crossed the plate on a triple to left-center by senior Joshua

Keenan to increase the lead to 6-0. Sam Velletri plated Keenan with an RBI single for the final run. Ignaszak was the story on the mound allowing two singles and walking three while striking out six in five-plus innings of work. He gave way to Leibert after allowing a leadoff double in the sixth inning, but the Titans could only get the runner to third before the inning ended on a great diving stop by the third baseman and scoop at first. Leibert struck out the side in the seventh. Aside from Keenan, Scott, Penders, Lauricella and Ignaszak, seniors Ryan Oliva, Zach LaMere, James Atkins, Gordon Fisher, Noah Schultz, Jacob Jurhs and Dominic Passafiume all were honored prior to their final home regular season contest. Brockport finished the regular season with an 11-7 record and seeded third in Class A1 for the Section V playoffs.

Volunteers needed to teach computer skills Now more than ever, everyday citizens must be digitallyliterate in order to engage with government, business or family and friends. Whether it is getting a driver’s license, making a purchase or sharing personal stories, skills to use computers and navigate the internet are essential. Digital Literacy trains volunteers and places them in local libraries, where they assist patrons in learning basic computer skills like navigating the web or using word processing programs. They also help patrons to complete computer-essential tasks, like creating online accounts, developing resumes, searching for jobs and getting social services. “There is a huge gap,” says program coordinator Brian Kane. “Some 15 percent of Rochester households do not have computers, according to the American Community Survey. Local residents rely heavily on our volunteers to learn new skills and complete essential tasks.” “More volunteers are needed now to meet the huge demand,” he explains.

B-B Elementary School celebrates STEAM in a spectacular event STEAM: Science; Technology; Engineering; Art; Math. The five disciplines were on full display on May 15 at the Byron-Bergen Elementary School’s seventh-annual K-6 Science Fair and Art Show. Parents, families and community members were invited to walk hallways filled with more than 500 pieces of colorful art, and see over 40 student-designed science fair projects. New this year were “robot miniature golf,” where students programmed robot golf balls to negotiate a nine-hole course; interactive “selfie walls” for fun photos; and a special black light room that gave viewers a whole new perspective on artwork. The Science Fair and Art Show was the culmination of a year’s worth of inspiration and hard work by students at all the elementary school grade levels. Organized by art teacher Melissa Coniglio and science teacher Craig Schroth, the show highlighted diverse creative talents and a wide range of student-driven, extracurricular science projects.

Projects ranged from the interaction of Mentos with soda, hurricanes, and why bees are dying, to what kind of rain occurs on other planets. “Many students have been working on their science projects all year,” said Schroth. “They chose their own topics and then completed experiments at home. The Fair is an opportunity for them to show off their work to fellow classmates, and then demonstrate to the public. They are proud to share their results with their families and scores of other science lovers.” Coniglio enjoyed planning the interactive aspects of the show. “I love to see people get really involved with the artwork and the exhibits,” she said. “It becomes an experience they can take home with them. It was fun watching students and parents take pictures under the black light and with the selfie walls.” The Science Fair and Art Show is one of Principal Brian Meister’s favorite events. “I love seeing how open our students are to new ideas, scientifically and artistically,

and how motivated they are to explore. As educators, we want to encourage this sense of endless possibility and wonder, and give

students the opportunity to share their excitement with others.” Provided information and photos

Byron-Bergen Elementary school students created a miniature golf course designed to be navigated by robot golf balls.

Selfie walls with hearts, butterflies and wings invited viewers to become part of the artwork.

Sigillo Chiropractic Treatment for Back Pain Has Come a Long Way

It was once believed that taking pain medication and getting some rest and relaxation were the best course of treatment for a bout of low-back pain, but nowadays research supports first trying drug-free, conservative options for pain management while remaining as active as possible during recuperation. Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. The epidemic of prescription opioid overuse and abuse has also led many health groups to reconsider the value of conservative approach to common conditions such as back pain. For example, the American College of Physicians (ACP), the largest medicalspecialty society in the world, updated its back pain treatment guidelines to support a conservative approach to care. In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released updated guidelines for prescribing opioids that also promote the use of non-pharmacologic alternatives for the treatment of chronic pain. In 2015, the Joint Commission, the organization that accredits more than 20,000 health care systems in the U.S. (including every major hospital), recognized the value of non-drug approaches to pain management by adding chiropractic and acupuncture to its pain management standard. Beyond the risks of overuse and addiction, prescription drugs that numb pain may also convince a patient that has a musculoskeletal condition such as back pain is less severe than it is, or that it has healed. That misunderstanding can lead to over-exertion and a delay in the healing process or even permanent injury. Presented as a service to the community by

Mud Runs - Fun and fitness for the whole family by Tami Raco, Personal Trainer Mud runs are obstacle course type races on a muddy course and have been growing in popularity due to their fun and challenging nature. Mud runs typically range from 3 to 10 miles, and the main goal is to participate in the obstacles and navigate the course. Obstacles can include navigating fields of mud, jumping fences, structures to climb over, rope climbs, water to wade or swim through and more. No experience is required to participate. However, having some level of basic fitness is important if you plan to run or finish in a competitive time. Mud runs can be great for all ages and fitness levels and provide a fun outdoor event to challenge your physical fitness, stamina, and confidence. Mud runs can be done individually, with family, friends or create a team with fun costumes or matching team shirts. They have grown in popularity which is bringing more mud run events to our area. The local Mud Run Season 2018 officially starts with the Greece Gauntlet on Saturday, June 9 at Greece Arcadia High School. This mud run is a 5k with approximately 20 obstacles. designed for anyone six years and up and is a great first timer event with the course only being 1.5 miles and 10 to 16 obstacles. Visit https://www.storyofhoperochester.com/ news-events.html for more information. Both of these local events are great first time mud runs or an excellent warm up for those who plan to participate in some of the more competitive mud runs later in the season. Western New York offers more challenging mud runs including a 13 mile course at the Bone Frog held at Kissing Bridge Ski Resort on July 28; the 10 mile Tough Mudder, scheduled for Saturday, August 4, this is a 5k mud run on scenic Seneca Lake. Vino and the Beast will be held on August 18 at Three Brothers Winery. Mud runs are not only great fun but can also really help build self-confidence. Overcoming obstacles and finishing the event regardless of the time is an awesome morale booster. Participating in a mud run is a great bonding event for family, friends and co-workers. Often when you decide to participate in an event such as a mud run, it can help inspire you to work towards being more active and reach an improved state of fitness. Merton Williams Middle School students welcome “Grandfriends” Each spring, Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton hosts a Grandfriends Breakfast in the school’s cafeteria for interested senior citizens in the district. Food is provided by Hilton CSD Food Service and is served by student ambassadors, student council members and National Junior Honor Society members. Grandfriends also enjoy displays of student work and music by the school’s performing groups. “We do whatever we can to support our grandkids,” said Sherry Schaus, who traveled from Clarence with her husband Ed to visit their grandson Will Green, a seventh grader, and enjoy the event. “It’s wonderful to have a touch point of involvement that includes us in school events,” she added. The couple was going to enjoy “Lunch with a Loved One” with their other three grandchildren later that day. The Grandfriends Breakfast coincides with Older Americans Month. Every May, the Administration on Aging, part of the Administration for Community Living, leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. The 2018 theme, Engage at Every Age, emphasizes that you are never too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental and emotional well-being. It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in our communities. Provided information

Sweden hosts joint meeting regarding Seymour Library The Town of Sweden hosted a joint meeting of the Brockport Village Board, Clarkson Town Board, Seymour Library Board and Sweden Town Board on May 22 to discuss the Seymour Library budget. Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson kicked off the meeting with a brief history of the Seymour Library and then achieved a consensus of all Board members present that all are proponents and supporters of the library, that all are interested in providing for a healthy and sustainable future for the library, and that all agree that there may be different opinions on how best to provide for the library’s financial future.

Library Director Carl Gouveia presented three “dream budget” scenarios that would increase library funding significantly over current funding. Clarkson and Brockport Board members stressed the importance of remaining within the property tax cap set by New York State. At the end of the meeting, the three municipalities agreed to pursue a grant that would fund a consultant to look for efficiencies in the library budget; to consider establishing reserves to fund capital repairs to the Seymour Library building; to assign two members from each municipal board to lead these actions; and to meet as a whole more frequently.

Brockport’s AJ Gruttadauro competes in World Race Walking Championship by Tami Raco

AJ Gruttadauro, a 2016 Brockport High School graduate, competed with the US Race Walk Team at the 2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Championship held May 5 and 6 in Taicang, China. Beginning in 7th grade, AJ was very active with the Brockport High School track team where he competed in cross-country, long distance running and steeple. AJ was first introduced to race walking when he participated in an invitational at Brockport College in 2015. According to his mom, Sharon, AJ was motivated to compete in this event because the school had no prior record for this type of competition. AJ wanted to be the first to trail blaze the sport for Brockport High School and have the very first record, a goal he accomplished. Race walking was very different for AJ. As primarily a distance runner, AJ found the rules of the sport challenging. Speeding up to a running gait, or becoming airborne for a second can be a disqualification in race walking. Initially he self-taught by watching videos on YouTube to learn the

technique. He eventually began working with a coach who specializes in race walking, Erin Taylor-Talcot of Owego, New York. Erin helped coach AJ as he qualified for the New Balance Nationals Outdoor in 2015 and then again in 2016 with the New Balance Indoor/Outdoor event. The training and competing led AJ to qualify for the USA Track Field Junior Team and to compete in championships for the World Race in Rome, Italy in 2016 and then in the USA/Canada competition. AJ currently attends West Virginia University as a History major where he trains and competes in race walking on the WVU Race walk team. AJ underwent vigorous training for the very competitive IAAF world event while wrapping up his last semester at college, and preparing for and taking his finals in advance. AJ’s WVT coaches, Jeremy Bloom and Bruce Cox, helped him train for the NAIA competition, and also helped him prepare for the trip to China. AJ had the ultimate experience in his young race walking career at the IAAF World Race Walking Championship when he completed a 50km event and was the

Photo by Robyn Stevens. first USA competitor to cross the finish line with his best time of 4 hours 16 minutes and 23 seconds. “This reflects a 13 minute, 10 second improvement from his previous best. I am a proud Mama,” exclaimed AJ’s mom, Sharon. The Gruttadauro family watched AJ compete in China on NBC Gold Watch. They look forward to having him back home in Brockport on Memorial Day weekend.
