Rangers volleyball team brings home sectional title Finishes second in state; many players recognized with awards The Spencerport Boys’ Varsity Volleyball team had an outstanding year. This team won a Sectional Title for their community for the first time since 2001. They also won their division for the second straight season going 10-0 in divisional play, while only losing two sets throughout the season. This determination earned them a trip to Long Island in a chance to play for the State Championship. They lost to Eastport Manor in pool play but won the match versus Oswego to give them their chance to play for the coveted State Championship. They had a rematch versus Eastport Manor out of Long Island, which was a Class A school last year. The Rangers took game one and had control of game three, but failed to capitalize. In the fourth set the boys were losing 24-17 and rallied making Eastport Manor call two timeouts and brought the score to 24-22, which showed the character of this team and program. These boys fought for everything throughout their time in Spencerport to get to the top of Section V and New York State. Many highlights of the season came when faced with adversity when losing to Victor in the first match of the year and winning the next 13 straight matches, with huge wins versus Gates Chili, Brock-
port, Brighton, Churchville and Fairport; a program that Spencerport has not beaten in 15 years at the varsity level. With a tough stretch at the end of their schedule and trips to Buffalo, the Rangers found themselves playing back in Buffalo for the Regional match-up with Eden. But first they had to take care of the teams they faced twice during the season. By having the number one seed for the second year in a row, the Rangers had a bye for their first round. Then they played against the Brighton Barons who won States last year and defeated Spencerport in the finals a year before. The Rangers then went to the finals to play against the 13 member senior team from Brockport. The first set was one of the most intense sporting events for all to witness. The score of game one went to 31-29 for the Rangers. Then the Rangers hit their stride and won the next two sets 25-19 and 25-14. A crowd rushed the court in a fury of excitement, giving the Rangers the epic Sectional title they were searching for as they made it to the finals three out of the last four years. The Rangers went off to a state qualifier match to play Midlakes where they came out flat but won in three sets. Finally, this led the Rangers to Orchard Park to play Eden, in their best match of the season as they came out early with a determination to win the chance to play for the State Championship. Holiday spirit comes to life at Genesee Country Museum At Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Yuletide in the Country, experience how Christmas became a beloved holiday, widely celebrated with church services, Christmas trees, gift-giving and parties. During Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, December 2 through 4, 9 through 11 and 16 through 18, the historic village is awash with the holiday spirit as it comes to life with joyful townsfolk celebrating the season at mid-century, including the lighting of a candle-decorated tree. Escorts guide visitors by candlelight through the village’s various historic houses where they will become captivated by scenarios based on actual people, events or writings of the 19th century. Each captures the spirit of 1849, the year Christmas
became an official holiday in New York State. Yuletide is the museum’s largest annual undertaking, and a multitude of actors, tour guides, decorators and cooks work for countless hours to deliver what has become a cherished local tradition. The walking tours last approximately one and one half hours and depart about every 15 minutes, beginning at 5 p.m. (until 8 p.m.) on Fridays; 2 to 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sundays. Tour costs adults $23/$19 members. Genesee Country Village & Museum is one of three recipients of $10,000 grants from Mars Inc. for the research and programming of historic chocolate. The winners of the Forrest E. Mars Jr. Chocolate History Research and Investigative Studies grants were announced at Ellis Island during the annual Colonial Chocolate Society banquet on November 16. “Chocolate history is an important part of who we are at Mars,” said Gail Broadright, director of Mars Sponsorships. “Each year we have the incredible opportunity of furthering the discovery and interpretation of chocolate’s unique role in our collective heritage. Our grant winners represent some of the innovators in this space, and we are thrilled to support their work, bringing chocolate history and the history of the Americas into the lives of their visitors.” GCVM, which has partnered with Mars in programming with historic chocolate since 2000, researched 19th-century cookbooks to find, document and share recipes using chocolate from 1800 to 1900. Some of the dishes were prepared and documented on video in the appropriate period buildings at the museum. The videos will go on Facebook and YouTube. Provided information

Corey Kluber named Hickok Belt® Award Winner for October Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of October 2016. A select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) conducted the voting. The voters selected Kluber based on his outstanding performance during the 2016 Major League Baseball postseason, which included leading the Indians to the World Series and then posting a dominating performance as the winning pitcher in both Game 1 and Game 4. Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents annual Holiday Pops Concert Celebrating a Brockport tradition, the Brockport Symphony Orchestra will present their 7th Annual Holiday Pops Concert on Saturday, December 3 at 4 p.m. in the historic sanctuary at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street in the Village of Brockport. Admission and parking are free, and donations to the orchestra with a portion for St. Luke’s and canned items for the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf will be gratefully accepted at the door. Under the baton of music director Jonathan Allentoff, this concert will feature special appearances by awardwinning Yamaha Flute Artist Tracy Harris, nationally acclaimed vocalist Mary Wojciechowski, and noted film lecturer and author, Dr. Sidney Rosenzweig. Harris will premiere two new works for flute and orchestra composed by Todd Harris, “Reimagining the First Noel� and “Joy to the World Frostily Reimagined.� Paying tribute to the songs featured in holiday films, Wojciechowski will perform “Do You Want to Build a
Snowman� from Frozen, “Somewhere in My Memory� from Home Alone 2, and “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day� from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. She will also sing “A Christmas Carol� by Charles Ives and the traditional Chanukah song, “Rock of Ages.� Rosenzweig, lecturer of film at The College at Brockport and author of “Casablanca and Other Major Films of Michael Curtiz,� will give a special introduction to Edison’s 1905 silent film, “The Night Before Christmas.� The movie will be showcased on screen as the orchestra performs Allentoff ’s new score. Between the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years holidays and festivities many Americans struggle not to pack on extra pounds. The food choices become more abundant and our time to exercise becomes a scarcity. Research has shown the average weight gain this time of year ranges between 3-10 lbs. Several studies, including a study from the New England Journal of Medicine, found that the overweight and formerly overweight are at the people at most risk to gain weight during the holiday season. Almost 40% of these demographics gained weight during the study. Often the weight gain is more than just parties. Social pressures, stress and breaks of routine are also top reasons people gain weight. Here are a few tips to help you avoid falling into the weight gain patterns: •Get moving! Start your day with some exercise. Whether it is a brisk walk, some time on the treadmill or a morning workout, start your day off with a calorie burning activity. Holiday eating is not always the issue. Having a break in your activity and skipping workouts can be as harmful to your weight management. Find time throughout the day for small bursts of exercise. Even 1015 minutes of exercise can go along way. •Never go to a party hungry. Eat before special events so that you don’t show up hungry. It’s much easier to tame cravings and impulse eating if you are full from a healthy meal. If you let your hunger kick in your ability to stay in control of your food choices will be hindered. •The “One a Dayâ€? approach; Allow yourself one holiday type treat per day. Your choice of the holiday treat, your choice of when and where you eat it. Allow yourself something you really enjoy but limit it to one item per day. This way you won’t feel deprived but you also won’t eat excessively. •Watch the liquid calories! Special coffees, alcohol with high sugar mixers and eggnog base drinks can add a lot of calories and carbs quickly. They won’t fill you up and you will find your sugar crash will make you crave even more. Allow real food to fill you up not the beverages. If drinking alcohol try low carb beers, wine spritzers or dry wines. Avoid mixed drinks with high sugar juices or sodas. Make a habit of having one 8oz glass of water after any alcoholic drink. •Socializing doesn’t have to center around eating. Enjoy time with your friends and family throughout the holiday festivities. Remind yourself you can still fully enjoy yourself with out over indulging. Focus on the quality of time you are spending with your loved ones.

Candlelight Christmas Show lights up Morgan Manning House The annual Candlelight Christmas Show will be held at the Morgan-Manning House, 151 Main Street in Brockport, on Friday, December 2 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Over 50 local artisans will display and sell their items in the national landmark Victorian mansion, home of the Western Monroe Historical Society. Brockport readies for annual holiday parade by Kristina Gabalski

Organizers are busy with last minute preparations for the sixth annual Holiday Light Spectacular Parade in Brockport. This year’s event is set for Sunday, December 4, and kicks off the holiday season in the village. The Brockport Police Stetson Club was instrumental in starting the now much anticipated event, and Brockport Police Officers Tyler Dawson and Joshua Sime (Brockport Police Stetson Club president) say fireworks are back this year. “The fireworks definitely bring more people,” Officer Dawson says. The fireworks show is sponsored by Sunnking Electronics Recycling and will begin immediately following the tree lighting at the end of the evening. The fireworks will be visible from the downtown business district, Officer Dawson says. Officers Dawson and Sime say the highlight of the evening - the community parade - begins at 5 p.m. on Main Street in the downtown business district. Featured will be floats, cars, trucks (of all
kinds) and marching bands illuminated with holiday lights. This year Jeremy “Newman” of the WBEE Morning Coffee Club and Caurie Putnam will MC the parade. Following the parade will be the tree lighting ceremony at Sagawa Park complete with a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Officer Dawson encourages families to come and spend the day in Brockport. “Members of the Brockport High School Choir will be singing carols,” he says. “Downtown stores will be staying open later for holiday shopping. Families can bring their kids out for a good time. We encourage everyone to come. It’s a tradition now and we want to see it expand.” Dawson adds that downtown stores located off Main Street will have stands set up along Main Street for the convenience of those attending the event. There will be no parking on Main Street, Officer Dawson says. Those attending can park in municipal lots located off Main Street in the business district, as well as where permitted on side streets.

Four Hilton seniors sign letters of intent to play collegiate sports Hilton High School had another proud moment when four seniors signed letters of intent to play sports at the collegiate level. Payton Cook will head to Mercyhurst University where she will major in Intelligence Studies and play Division II lacrosse. Yianni Diakomiholis will continue his international wrestling career at the Division I Cornell University where he will major in Biology in Society. Redhawks win first alumni tourney by Warren Kozireski One day after setting a new school record with 17 treys in their first round victory over Stonehill, Roberts Wesleyan’s women’s basketball team overcame a ten-point third quarter deficit in a 78-69 win in the championship of their Alumni Tournament. The Redhawks built a five point lead after one quarter led by a pair of treys by senior Kindsay Brandt before the Storm had a 9-2 second quarter run to tighten the contest. Lake Erie outscored Roberts 16-6 to open up a ten point advantage in the third quarter, but the Redhawks rallied at the free throw line with junior guard Brooke Fields, Brandt and Taya Andrews going a combined eight-foreight from the free throw line. A Fields acrobatic shot at the end of the third quarter cut the deficit to two. Two three-pointers by Lucy Covley in the early minutes of the fourth kept the Storm lead at just two before the Redhawks 18-5 run anchored by Fields two field goals and three free throws, an old-fashioned three-point play by Brandt along with a trey, another Covley three-pointer and free throws by Necedah James. “Coach really got on us (after the first half) and we really had to pick it up,” Fields said. “We started out a little slow and that’s not how we normally start off. So we all had to regain our focus and come back in the second half.” Five Redhawks scored in double figures led by All-Tournament team selection Covley’s 18 points and Brandt’s 15. Fields scored 13 with a team-high four assists while tournament Most Valuable player Emily Miller, who set a career high with 29 points in the semifinal win, and Sara Nady each added ten points. Andrews led with nine rebounds. The Redhawks were 18-19 from the free throw line during the game as they improved to 4-1.
Schreiner nets first shutout by Warren Kozireski Sophomore goaltender Liam Schreiner registered his first varsity shutout in his first varsity game while senior Alec Rockow, Maison Fadale and Patrick Viscardi each scored twice to lead Brockport to a season-opening 11-0 win over Batavia in high school hockey. “It’s always something I wanted to have happen,” Schreiner said about his shutout. “It’s a dream scenario. Going into the last few minutes I was sweating more than the rest of the game combined, but I tried to stay calm and confident.” As for the souvenir puck the coaching staff gave him in the locker room, he said “I think I’ll put it on my bookshelf so I can look at it every day.” Fadale opened the scoring with the only goa, of the first period. He banged in a rebound from a Grady Walden shot at 14:02—his first varsity goal. Brockport exploded with five goals in the second period. Defenseman Tyler Martin skated in from the left point and rifled a shot over the glove hand of the goaltender and into the upper right corner just 1:11 into the stanza. Viscardi netted his first stick side from atop the left faceoff circle after an offensive zone draw with assists to Walden and Koby Dusett at 4:50. Rockow banged in his own rebound at 9:24 and, less than two minutes later, took a perfect pass in the slot from Andrew Harley for his second goal. Austin King made it 6-0 Brockport when he pounded in the rebound from a ben Leach shot from the right point at 12:52. The Blue Devils made it a runaway with five more tallies in the third period. Anthony Volpe knocked in a rebound after Walden’s shot hit the goaltender in the mask and bounced to the slot to make it 7-0. Fadale scored his second of the game on a perfect redirect of a Rockow pass before Viscardi scored his second with an assist from Peyton Young. Sophomore Jack Skakuj walked in from the point and found the corner of the net at 13:57 of the third period for a 10-0 lead and senior Cameron Dony scored on the power play from Adam Drexel for the final goal. Brockport outshot Batavia 59-10 in the contest. The Blue Devils easily won the Division II regular season crown last season before being upset by Aquinas in overtime in the Section V tournament quarterfinals. “We have a very similar team to last year; deep and we can roll three or four lines with 12 seniors,” Brockport head coach Greg Stahl said. “They have a calm confidence and are very businesslike. I think we will be able to wear teams down this season by playing more lines.”

Holley Elementary hosts Veterans Day assembly The annual Veterans Day assembly at Holley Elementary School on November 10 featured patriotic music. Students led the assembly, guiding the audience through a history of American music through their presentations and performances. The Elementary Chorus sang while the Elementary Band played the “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The chorus also sang “God Bless the USA” and “Thank You, Soldiers.” Following an introduction by senior
Claudia Drechsel, the band played “This is My Country,” along with “America the Beautiful.” Sixth grader Chris Lyndaker played “Bugle Call” and “Taps” on his trumpet. A group of local veterans from the American Legion and VFW posted and retired the colors to begin and end the assembly. Genesee Community College receives grant for student veterans Genesee Community College announced that the College has received a grant in the amount of $8,000 from America’s Warrior Partnership Community Integration, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to identify and support community-level agencies that provide holistic services to veterans. This grant was awarded in response to a nomination by Veterans One-stop Center of WNY, Inc., with whom Genesee Community College will collaborate to provide vital services to veterans that empower them to remain enrolled in school. This funding will empower Genesee Community College to keep veterans enrolled in school while addressing unforeseen challenges and barriers they may encounter which cannot be addressed by other resources through providing financial assistance. “Returning veterans are an important resource in our communities, and deserve the range of educational services that will help them pursue rewarding careers,” said Richard Ensman, Jr., director of Development and External Affairs at Genesee
Community College. “We are delighted to expand our outreach to veterans in partnership with Veterans One-stop Center, and to make scholarship and grant dollars available to our veterans community.” “Genesee Community College is a great community partner in Genesee and Wyoming counties when it comes to serving our veterans and military families,” said Roger L. Parkway meeting draws a crowd in Orleans County by Kristina Gabalski Residents, community leaders, and county and state lawmakers are vowing to continue their fight for repairs to the Lake Ontario State Parkway in Orleans County. The Oak Orchard Neighborhood Association (OONA) hosted a meeting at Point Breeze November 14 to discuss the future of the Parkway. New York State Department of Transportation’s Region 4 director Kevin Bush and State Senator Robert Ortt, R-Tonawanda, attended the meeting which drew more than 100 people. This past summer, the state announced there is paving planned for eastern sections of the Parkway - from Payne Beach west to Route 19 - which will be paved next summer, and the portion from Hamlin west to Route 237 in Kendall, will be paved in 2018. Members of OONA have said that still does not address the horrific conditions of the Parkway west of Route 237 to Lakeside Beach Park in Carlton. Orleans County Legislator Ken DeRoller, who represents the towns of Kendall and Carlton, tells the Suburban News/Hamlin-Clarkson Herald that the November 14 meeting was very positive. He says he expects Senator Ortt will be very helpful on the state level. “We’ve been to Albany two times,” DeRoller says. “The State Assembly can be overwhelming ... we are now operating at the Senate level, which may give us a better shot.” DeRoller explains that although the November 14 meeting went well, those advocating for improvements west of Route 237 have, “a ways to go.” He said the Parkway is owned by the State Department of Parks and Recreation, but is maintained by the state DOT. The challenge for improving the Parkway west of Route 237 lies in convincing the DOT that it is, “more than a highway,” DeRoller says. Traffic counts on the Parkway pale in comparison to Routes 18 and 104, but DeRoller points out the Parkway is not open to commercial traffic as it was constructed to provide motorists with scenic vista views of Lake Ontario. “It’s like comparing apples to oranges,” he says of traffic volume counts. DeRoller argues the value of the parkway lies mainly as a draw for tourists.He observes that the Parkway connects two state parks which are 15 miles apart along the southern shore of Lake Ontario - Lakeside Beach State Park and Hamlin Beach State Park. According to DeRoller, Lakeside Beach is a 744-acre park which saw more than 77,000 visitors in 2014. It has 274 campsites and four miles of hiking and biking, cross country and snowmobile trails. Hamlin Beach is 1,287 acres and saw more than 278,000 visitors in 2014. It has 264 campsites and six miles of hiking, biking, cross country and snowmobile trails.
Additionally, DeRoller points out the Parkway recently made the 2016 list of the Landmark Society of Western New York’s Five to Revive list. “We are losing the battle on car count,” DeRoller told members of the Kendall School Board of Education during their regular meeting November 16. “The value of the Parkway lies in its historic value (and its tourist draw) as a scenic byway. We need to talk about tourism and quality of life.” Kendall School Board President Nadine Hanlon attended the November 14 meeting at Point Breeze. She said the state continues to argue that there are no funds to continue repaving to Lakeside Beach, but OONA and community leaders would continue to advocate for funding. “Kevin Bush was impressed with the number of people who attended,” she said. Kendall Jr./Sr. High School Principal Carol D’Agostino agreed. The DOT, “was clearly impressed with the number of people and the fact they were the right people (to be in attendance),” she said. D’Agostino noted the meeting was very positive. Members of the Kendall Town Board also attended the November 14 meeting and discussed their impressions during the regular Town Board meeting November 15. Kendall Supervisor Tony Cammarata called the meeting, “refreshing.” He spoke during the OONA meeting and explained that in the Town of Kendall, the poor condition of the Parkway is an important safety concern. “First responders are no longer taking the Parkway,” Supervisor Cammarata said. That means it takes longer to get patients to hospitals on the west side of Rochester. “I hope they (NYSDOT) take that into consideration,” Cammarata urged. “Our main criteria is public safety.” Kendall Councilperson Bruce Newell said EMTs report it can take at least five minutes longer to transport on much busier routes such as Route 18 or Route 104, but the poor condition of the Parkway makes it unsuitable for emergency use both for ambulances and local fire trucks and apparatus. Additionally, the Lake Ontario State Parkway Transportation Alternatives Feasibility Study is progressing. Councilperson Newell, who has been part of a selection committee, reported November 15 that a recommendation has been made regarding a consultant for the study. The study is a joint effort between the Orleans County Planning Department and the Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) and will determine how best to use the most poorly maintained section of the roadway in Orleans County. Councilperson Newell says options include repurposing, decommissioning or reducing to less than four lanes. Legislator Ken DeRoller explains that decision making based on eventual study results, as well as the push for more funding to improve the condition of the Parkway to Lakeside Beach will, “be a very interesting challenge.”
