Hilton Apple Fest celebrates 35 years – Oct. 3 and 4 The Hilton Apple Fest was founded in 1981 by Hilton businessmen Patrick Marlow and Douglas Marple. Homer Marple of the former Marple Furniture financed the festival in its first year when it was organized by Carol Gursslin with just a handful of volunteers and held at Canning Street Square. The purpose of the Apple Fest was to offer free family entertainment while celebrating the apple harvest season, the Hilton/Parma community, and the local apple growers. Thirty-five years later, the Apple Fest Committee has stayed true to that purpose. The Original Zarpentine’s Farm Market will be on hand selling a large variety of apple products. The Zarpentine family participated in the creation of the World’s Biggest Apple Pie in the early 1980s. The Apple Fest has grown to 125 crafters and 26 food booths, a Farmers Market with 13 vendors offering products from Western NY, plus 26 community groups. Entertainment includes local bands as well as dance, karate and gymnastics demonstrations. One of the reasons for Apple Fest’s success is the help it receives from approximately 300 volunteers. “What motivates a lot of us to participate in the Apple

Fest is that we believe in the programs that it helps and so many of those programs help kids,” said volunteer Charlie Martella. “That’s what distinguishes the Apple Fest from other festivals. It has a greater purpose.” The Hilton Apple Fest donates an average of $5,000 per year to local organizations and charities. Some of the past recipients have included the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf, Parma Public Library, Village of Hilton parks, Camp Good Days and Special Times, Parma Historical Society, Hilton High School Senior Bash, Braddock Bay Raptor Research, just to name a few.

Apple Fest attendees are being asked to bring a nonperishable food item or paper product to donate to the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf. Donation bins will be located near the shuttle bus stops, so there’s no need to carry donations while enjoying the festival. Basic food items, such as tuna fish, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, pasta, sauce and soups, are most appreciated. Toilet paper, paper towels and tissues are also needed. Please do not donate expired items, home canned or processed foods, medicines, open items or alcoholic beverages. The Hilton Apple Fest takes place Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and Sunday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shuttle service is available from Hilton High School, 400 East Ave., and the Firemen’s Field on South Ave. Read more about this local fall festival in the Westside News Inc. Golden Eagles women’s soccer register shutout over Medaille Longtime coach to retire by Warren Kozireski Freshman Carly Bulich had one goal and one assist with three other players netting goals to lead the College at Brockport’s women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over Medaille as they prepare for SUNYAC conference play. Just 12 minutes in, the defense changed fields with Bulich carrying the ball down the left wing. She beat the defender before sending a cross that junior Chelsea Stahl (Brockport HS) tapped into the net for her second goal of the campaign and a 1-0 Brockport lead. In the 36th minute, senior midfielder Courtney Szczesniak had her corner kick rebound back to Kelsey Sammon. Her kick was redirected into the back of the net by Szczesniak for a 2-0 halftime lead. Joan Schockow

Bulich scored her first collegiate goal at 46:30 as she headed in a cross from Christina Leonardo. The fourth and final tally came in the 84th minute as Vanessa Baldwin, seeing her first minutes of the season knocked in a goal-line cross from Stefanie Drago for her first collegiate goal as well. Brockport goalkeepers Catherine Eliasson and Daniele Ogrodowski did not need to make a single save in registering the shutout as the Mavericks managed just one first half shot. “I still think of us as a young team even though we have 13 juniors because some of them have played since they were freshmen, but others are just getting a chance,” head coach Joan Schockow said. “I think of us as game inexperienced, but I think we’ll get better as the season goes on.” Schockow, in her 27th season as head coach and the all-time winningest soccer coach in program history, announced two days later that she would retire at the end of the season. The Spencerport High grad has led the Golden Eagles to just five games shy of the 300 wins milestone, with a career mark of 295-176-38. During her tenure, the

Golden Eagles program has produced 19 All-Region players, 38 All-State selections and 98 All-SUNYAC players. Schockow has been named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year five times - 2012, 2008, 2006, 1993, and 1989. The Golden Eagles advanced to their first ever NCAA Tournament in 2006 after winning the SUNYAC Championship. A ceremony will take place prior to the Golden Eagles October 15 contest against SUNY Cortland, Schockow’s alma mater. She has accepted a full time position within the Brockport Kinesiology and Physical Education department. “Even though this is a great opportunity for me, I am still very saddened to give up coaching this wonderful program,” said Schockow in a press release. “It has been so much more than a job, it has been a part of my heart and soul for the last 28 seasons. I want to say thank you to all the administrators, staff, fans, parents but mostly to the players both current and alumni who have truly made this a wonderful experience that touched my life in so many ways. It most sincerely has been my honor to coach Brockport Women’s Soccer. It’s about being a part of something bigger than yourself!”

Suddenly 10 benefit concert October 3 The communities of Churchville and Chili are rallying around the Nerestant Family whom recently experienced an unimaginable tragedy. They went from a young family of five, to a family of ten; two adults and eight children, in an instant. This amazing family recently moved from Minnesota to North Chili to be near extended family. They are raising three young children of their own, along with five children ranging in ages, 10-16, that recently became parentless due to a tragedy. The children’s aunt and uncle, Himler and Rebecca Nerestant, became the legal guardians of these children, and with three children of their own, they are now a family of ten, Suddenly 10. This has posed many challenges that range from financial needs, to basic needs such as a vehicle, and a home that can accommodate a family of ten. Even food, furniture, and medical needs, pose challenges. Supportive businesses such as Wynne Eye Associates of Pittsford donated their services to provide eye exams and glasses for the children. Pearce Memorial Church donated a missionary home to provide temporary housing, and friends and church members

have donated meals and many boxes of food and supplies. Community members have designed logos, posters and webpages and local printing businesses such as RJ Printing and SGM have donated their services to help this family. “This community has rallied around this family in a way like I have never seen before. The outpouring of love has been amazing, but we still need more help,” said Kathryn Garrett, fundraiser organizer. Understandably, so are the emotional challenges of this family, immense. Dealing with relocating, a brand new family dynamic and even grief, are some of the large obstacles that they face. A benefit concert scheduled for Saturday, October 3 has been organized to help support the family. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Churchville-Chili Middle School Auditorium, 139 Fairbanks Road, Churchville. There will be many top notch musical acts and even one of the children in the family will be performing a dance. There will be other fundraising opportunities at this event, as well. Canal Road apartment project draws criticism from residents by Kristina Gabalski During their September 10 meeting, members of the Ogden Planning Board tabled the application of Canal Road Apartments following a public hearing at which several residents expressed concerns over the project. Contractor/owner Mike LoPresti is seeking approval to construct two, eight-unit apartment buildings on slightly more than two acres of land on the north side of Canal Road between Upton Avenue and Union Street. The project requires re-zoning from R-1 Single Family Residential to Multi-Family Residential and sits along the western Spencerport Village line. “We’ve been instructed to pay attention to the village setting and be creative,” LoPresti told the board. In addition to residents’ concerns, Planning Board members said they are still in need of more information regarding the project. There appears to be quite a lot to do yet,” Planning Board member Tom Coburn noted. LoPresti described the 16-unit development as, “luxury apartments in the $1,000/month range.” Apartments would have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, LoPresti said. The Conservation Board expressed concerns over drainage at the site and Town Engineer John Freel told Planning Board members the project needs a storm water management pond on the north side as well as a storm

water pollution prevention plan. Ogden Building Inspector Patrick Smith said the storm water runoff issue must be addressed, “the project is not ready for approval,” he said. Three residents who spoke were not in favor of the project. An Upton Avenue resident said there are, “more apartments than you know what to do with,” in the town. “It won’t benefit the town to put in more apartments,” he observed. He said the project appeared to be “spot zoning … it doesn’t work for anyone who lives there. It’s not what anybody wants in the neighborhood.” Planning Board member Marc Robinson noted the project has already been through the Zoning Board. A resident of North Union Street said Spencerport has been a quaint village, but now both it and the Town of Ogden are turning into apartments galore. She noted drainage issues she has on her nearby property and asked, “... is the town concerned about residents around there?” Marc Robinson responded that he understands residents’ concerns, but drainage issues will be addressed. When the project is completed, drainage must be improved at the site. He also said there is a strong market in the area for apartments. “Apartments are huge,” Robinson noted. “They can’t build them fast enough.”

Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents “A Tribute to Rochester Composers” The Brockport Symphony Orchestra, celebrating the start of its sixth season, will present “A Tribute to Rochester Composers” on Friday, October 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the historic sanctuary at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street in the Village of Brockport. Admission is free, however any donations to the orchestra and canned items for the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf will be gratefully accepted at the door. Under the baton of music director Jonathan Allentoff, this concert will showcase the wide range of repertoire written by Rochester composers, including exciting symphonic works, lively marches, and heart-felt songs. The following guest artists and ensembles will be featured on the program: Mary Wojciechowski, Emmanuel Sikora, Brockapella Vocal Ensemble, and the Golden Eagle String Band. Mary Wojciechowski, guest vocal artist, recently performed as soloist with the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra at the 2015 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. She has performed numerous opera and Broadway roles on the stage and was invited to perform in the Philadelphia Pops Festival Chorus under the direction of jazz legend Peter Nero.

A local newspaper writes that Wojciechowski “not only has a great voice and style, but she likes to tell little stories before singing which makes her presentation even more enjoyable.” Wojciechowski will perform songs by noted Rochester composers Alec Wilder and Charles Strouse. Emmanuel Sikora, guest composer and piano soloist, is a native of Western New York. Recently featured by the Society for New Music and the Smithsonian Institute, his works have been broadcast on WSKG Television & Radio and recorded by Russian pianist, Uliana Kozhevnikova. Sikora will perform the world premiere of his work entitled, “Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra.” Reflective in nature, the work combines filmic passages in the orchestra with soaring melodic lines in the piano. He will also perform three original piano pieces on the magnificent grand piano at St. Luke’s. The Brockapella Vocal Ensemble, a local favorite, will make a special guest appearance on the program. Founded in 2011, the ensemble is comprised of Brockport students and alumni who enjoy singing popular standards and contemporary pieces. They will perform three selections: Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Hallelujah, and I Hope You Dance. The award-winning Golden Eagle String Band will join the orchestra for Rulison’s “Rochester Schottische.” Founded and directed by William Hullfish, the ensemble has been performing in the Northeastern U.S. since 1978. The band has recorded for Smithsonian/Folkways and toured under a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The program also includes works by David Diamond, Howard Hanson, Daniel Chazanoff, and William Glynn. Following the concert, Parish Hall will host a dessert reception celebrating Homecoming & Family Weekend. Provided information

Merton Williams students seeking donations for LIMBS International Throughout the developing world there are an estimated 40 million amputees and only five percent of them have access to any type of prosthetic limb system. Students at Merton Williams Middle School are working to change that. On September 30, all students and staff will participate in a Community and Service Learning Activity as part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Seventh graders will engage in activities to raise awareness about the struggles people without limbs face every day. For example, they will put on a shirt or tie a shoelace by using only one hand. The eighth graders have started a fundraising campaign to help LIMBS Interna-

tional give amputees around the world a second chance at life by providing them with a LIMBS leg system. The prosthetics are high-quality and cost less than the average cell phone. Students and staff hope to raise $900 by collecting pledges and participating in a walk-a-thon during the fundraising event. The $900 will allow the school to provide three people with new legs. To donate and to learn more about LIMBS International, visit http://ow.ly/SlqJ5. Updates will be posted on Teacher Allie Pink’s Instagram account (misspink0205) with the hashtag #mwlimbs2015. 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner set by Western Monroe Historical Society “A Golden History – A Shining Future” is the theme for the 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner marking the Golden Anniversary of the Western Monroe Historical Society in Brockport. The event takes place on Saturday, October 17, at Cooper Hall on The College at Brockport campus. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. The dinner and program start at 7 p.m. Reservations are due by October 7. A fire severely damaged the historic Morgan-Manning House at 151 Main Street in 1964. Volunteers who restored the home in 1965 organized as the Western Monroe Historical Society that year. Since then, the Society has preserved the 1854 structure as Brockport’s landmark jewel and serving as a museum with archives for historical research. “That is our golden history,” said Alicia Fink, past president of the Society and dinner chairperson. “Representing the shining future, we have chosen a Victorian-style lantern

as our Celebration emblem. It symbolizes the light from the Morgan-Manning House belvedere (commonly called a “cupola” on the roof), a beacon shining on better days ahead for the Society.” Master of Ceremonies for the program will be Gary Skoog with welcoming remarks, official proclamations, and introduction of speakers. The served dinner includes salad, dual entrée of beef filet and chicken, potato and seasonal vegetable, plus dessert buffet. The dinner is $35 per person, payable to Western Monroe Historical Society, 151 Main Street, Brockport, NY 14420. Paid reservations for individuals or groups are due by October 7. For details on making group reservations and other information, phone Sandy at the Society office 585-637-3645. Donations and sponsorships are welcome. Provided information

Ribbon-cutting celebrates Grand Re-opening of Grandpa Sam’s Italian Kitchen Grandpa Sam’s Italian Kitchen is pleased to celebrate its 10-year anniversary and grand re-opening at 138 South Union Street, Spencerport. On Friday, October 9 at 10 a.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the special occassion. “We’ve been hard at work remodeling our space to include a wine and beer bar,” said Alba Alonci, owner. “We are excited to have a great wine and beer selection and the ability to pair them with meat and cheese trays for a quick appetizer, happy hours, and to include a cocktail and wine of the day.” What began as a small local dining room in 2005 has grown to more than double its original space in just ten years, and now employs 32 staff members. Grandpa Sam’s Italian Kitchen has a warm and cozy feeling, while being able to accommodate both small intimate dinners and larger parties. The restaurant launched in 2005 after a friend of the family, having tasted a mugliulati (a bread stuffed with sausage and cheese) liked it so much he suggested that the family open a restaurant so that others could enjoy the cooking, too. Named after the family patriarch, Salvatore “Sam” Alonci, Grandpa Sam loved making sure he kept his family and his community well-fed. Whether as a farmer

in Realamonte, Italy; a WWII prisoner of war; or a father, son, grandfather and friend - Sam was known for his generosity, farming and gardening skills and his amazing Italian cooking. Grandpa Sam passed away years before the restaurant opened, so in honor of how much his grandchildren loved him and all he had done, they named the restaurant in his honor. Grandpa Sam’s Italian Kitchen serves Italian cuisine in the heart of Spencerport, just a short walk from the Erie Canal, on Spencerport’s main thoroughfare, South Union Street. The owners give credit to their amazing staff for the past ten years of service to their loyal customers. “We are so blessed to be a part of the wonderful community of Spencerport, and to be able to share our family’s heritage through food with so many people,” said Alonci. “We look forward to welcoming people to our dining room for years to come.” Area dignitaries and the Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to offer remarks, assist with the ribbon-cutting, and welcome the community to the newly remodeled restaurant. Spencerport author David B. Seaburn releases new novel If “write what you know” are words to live by, then Spencerport author David B. Seaburn should have fodder for many years’ worth of books. The wisdom gained by the author’s 30-year career as a marriage and family therapist and tenure as a parish minister contribute broadly to his fifth novel, More More Time (Savant Books and Publications, July 2015). Readers describe it as a compelling and thought-provoking story of six intertwining lives set against the limits of time. Through his characters - lively, funny, a bit lost or wounded, yet resilient and hopeful - Seaburn explores issues that every individual faces during a lifetime. How do we make relationships work? Who can we trust and love? What is the impact of loss on our lives? How do we use the time allotted to us, even though we have no idea how much time we actually have? “I think that we are always wrestling with these questions; we are always looking for answers,”

David B. Seaburn Seaburn says. “It’s through this process that we make sense of our lives and give them meaning.” A free book launch party, open to the public, will take place Thursday, October 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Writers and Books, 740 University Avenue, Rochester. The community is invited to stop by and hear Seaburn’s reading from More More Time. Provided information

Knights of Pythias present Camp Good Days with a $2,000 donation Sunday, July 12 The Order of Knights of Pythias (Rochester Jay Lodge 639) presented Camp Good Days a $2,000 donation. The donation will serve as a means to allow four campers to have a full week-long stay a camp. “The Knights of Pythias have always been great friends of Camp Good Days,” said Camp Good Days’ Chairman and Founder, Gary Mervis. “The Knights of Pythias have bought into the mission of Camp Good Days, and have allowed me to keep a promise I made over 36 years ago: that all of our programs would be free of charge to anyone who qualified for our services. The only way I have been able to keep that promise is through the efforts of special fundraising events, and groups like The Knights of Pythias.” The Order of the Knights of Pythias is an international, non-sectarian fraternal organization, based on the principles of friendship, charity, and benevolence. “The Knights of Pythias are excited to continue their support of Camp Good Days,” said Knights of Pythias Financial Secretary, Mark Goldberg. “We truly believe in the role that Camp Good Days plays in the lives of families impacted by cancer.” Camp Good Days and Special Times, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives

Use a RealtoR Although some people choose to fly solo when selling or buying their homes, the services of a qualified real estate professional are invaluable. What appears to be a simple transaction to the uninitiated novice can in reality turn out to be riddled with complications. An experienced Realtor can navigate unfamiliar territory and handle tricky negotiations. A professional real estate agent has invaluable experience in advertising your home, organizing inspections and appraisals, screening prospective buyers, drawing up contracts and negotiating terms. A skilled agent can be a valuable sounding board when you are taxed emotionally. They know what to expect and can guide you past the potential hazards. An experienced real estate agent will help you evaluate comparable properties to determine the best price for your home. They are familiar with both local issues and regional market conditions, and can recommend properties that represent a good investment. Buying or selling property is a serious undertaking. However tempting it may be to save on the agent's commission, avoid the "penny wise, pound foolish" pitfall. Engaging the service of a Realtor can be tantamount to acquiring peace of mind.
