Hilton Apple Fest celebrates 35 years – Oct. 3 and 4 The Hilton Apple Fest was founded in 1981 by Hilton businessmen Patrick Marlow and Douglas Marple. Homer Marple of the former Marple Furniture financed the festival in its first year when it was organized by Carol Gursslin with just a handful of volunteers and held at Canning Street Square. The purpose of the Apple Fest was to offer free family entertainment while celebrating the apple harvest season, the Hilton/Parma community, and the local apple growers. Thirty-five years later, the Apple Fest Committee has stayed true to that purpose. The Original Zarpentine’s Farm Market will be on hand selling a large variety of apple products. The Zarpentine family participated in the creation of the World’s Biggest Apple Pie in the early 1980s. The Apple Fest has grown to 125 crafters and 26 food booths, a Farmers Market with 13 vendors offering products from Western NY, plus 26 community groups. Entertainment includes local bands as well as dance, karate and gymnastics demonstrations. One of the reasons for Apple Fest’s success is the help it receives from approximately 300 volunteers. “What motivates a lot of us to participate in the Apple

Fest is that we believe in the programs that it helps and so many of those programs help kids,” said volunteer Charlie Martella. “That’s what distinguishes the Apple Fest from other festivals. It has a greater purpose.” The Hilton Apple Fest donates an average of $5,000 per year to local organizations and charities. Some of the past recipients have included the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf, Parma Public Library, Village of Hilton parks, Camp Good Days and Special Times, Parma Historical Society, Hilton High School Senior Bash, Braddock Bay Raptor Research, just to name a few.

Apple Fest attendees are being asked to bring a nonperishable food item or paper product to donate to the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf. Donation bins will be located near the shuttle bus stops, so there’s no need to carry donations while enjoying the festival. Basic food items, such as tuna fish, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, pasta, sauce and soups, are most appreciated. Toilet paper, paper towels and tissues are also needed. Please do not donate expired items, home canned or processed foods, medicines, open items or alcoholic beverages. The Hilton Apple Fest takes place Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and Sunday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shuttle service is available from Hilton High School, 400 East Ave., and the Firemen’s Field on South Ave. Read more about this local fall festival in the Westside News Inc. Golden Eagles women’s soccer register shutout over Medaille Longtime coach to retire by Warren Kozireski Freshman Carly Bulich had one goal and one assist with three other players netting goals to lead the College at Brockport’s women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over Medaille as they prepare for SUNYAC conference play. Just 12 minutes in, the defense changed fields with Bulich carrying the ball down the left wing. She beat the defender before sending a cross that junior Chelsea Stahl (Brockport HS) tapped into the net for her second goal of the campaign and a 1-0 Brockport lead. In the 36th minute, senior midfielder Courtney Szczesniak had her corner kick rebound back to Kelsey Sammon. Her kick was redirected into the back of the net by Szczesniak for a 2-0 halftime lead. Joan Schockow

Bulich scored her first collegiate goal at 46:30 as she headed in a cross from Christina Leonardo. The fourth and final tally came in the 84th minute as Vanessa Baldwin, seeing her first minutes of the season knocked in a goal-line cross from Stefanie Drago for her first collegiate goal as well. Brockport goalkeepers Catherine Eliasson and Daniele Ogrodowski did not need to make a single save in registering the shutout as the Mavericks managed just one first half shot. “I still think of us as a young team even though we have 13 juniors because some of them have played since they were freshmen, but others are just getting a chance,” head coach Joan Schockow said. “I think of us as game inexperienced, but I think we’ll get better as the season goes on.” Schockow, in her 27th season as head coach and the all-time winningest soccer coach in program history, announced two days later that she would retire at the end of the season. The Spencerport High grad has led the Golden Eagles to just five games shy of the 300 wins milestone, with a career mark of 295-176-38. During her tenure, the

Golden Eagles program has produced 19 All-Region players, 38 All-State selections and 98 All-SUNYAC players. Schockow has been named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year five times - 2012, 2008, 2006, 1993, and 1989. The Golden Eagles advanced to their first ever NCAA Tournament in 2006 after winning the SUNYAC Championship. A ceremony will take place prior to the Golden Eagles October 15 contest against SUNY Cortland, Schockow’s alma mater. She has accepted a full time position within the Brockport Kinesiology and Physical Education department. “Even though this is a great opportunity for me, I am still very saddened to give up coaching this wonderful program,” said Schockow in a press release. “It has been so much more than a job, it has been a part of my heart and soul for the last 28 seasons. I want to say thank you to all the administrators, staff, fans, parents but mostly to the players both current and alumni who have truly made this a wonderful experience that touched my life in so many ways. It most sincerely has been my honor to coach Brockport Women’s Soccer. It’s about being a part of something bigger than yourself!”

Brook Field development proposal again seeks incentive zoning in Clarkson by Kristina Gabalski Clarkson/Sweden residents had their say regarding incentive zoning for the latest Brook Field at Clarkson development proposal during a public hearing held by the Clarkson Town Board Tuesday, September 22. About three dozen people attended the meeting and the majority who spoke were not in favor of rezoning for the project proposed for the southwest corner of the busy Ridge Road (Route 104) Sweden Walker Road (Route 260) intersection. The revised proposal includes eight, two-unit senior duplex buildings; an 87-unit senior apartment building; 12, two-unit villas; six, sixteen-unit apartment buildings; and five mixed-use buildings with eight apartments each and a total of 30,000 sq. ft. of commercial office or retail space. Some who spoke questioned what benefits the incentive zoning - which includes tax incentives for the developer - would bring to the town. “What’s in the deal, what is the town getting?” a resident of St. Katherine Way asked. He said focusing on the economic benefits make the re-zoning sound like “zoning for dollars.” Reuben Ortenberg, an attorney representing the developer - Atlantic Funding and Real Estate, LLC/Al Spaziano - said the town will receive a payment of $375,000 up front under incentive zoning. The development would be constructed in three phases beginning with Senior housing and the mixed use commercial buildings along Ridge Road. Ortenberg said Brook Field will also help the town, “move forward with the hamlet concept,” called for in the town’s comprehensive plan. The parcel, which runs west of Sweden Walker Road between Ridge Road and East Avenue is currently zoned Highway Commercial near Ridge Road (seven acres) and Suburban Residential along Sweden Walker Road to East Avenue (24 acres). Roads and sewers in Brook Field at Clarkson would be owned and maintained by the developer and not be a burden on taxpayers, Ortenberg said. Additionally, Clarkson Supervisor Paul Kimball noted the development would bring $150,000 in green acre trust fees (which the town must use for parks development) and $150,000 in building permit fees to the town. He said when fully built out, Brook Field would be assessed at $20 million compared to $4-6 million that would be the likely assessment for a development consisting of only duplexes or single-family homes. Increased traffic, particularly along Sweden Walker Road in both Clarkson and Sweden, continues to be a major concern. “I see it as a traffic nightmare,” one Clarkson resident said. A Town of Sweden resident who lives on

Sweden Walker Road agreed. “It will be a nightmare,” she said and asked, “Is there no accommodation to residents who live nearby and will be affected by it?” Kimball said Sweden Walker Road and Ridge Road are both state roads and the NYSDOT has given its approvals. “We talked to the DOT and asked for a left-hand turn lane northbound and the DOT rejected it,” he said. The project, which was initially proposed in 2014, has been downsized following the Town Board’s rejection of incentive zoning one year ago. Michael Montalto, a project manager with Costich Engineering, said the original 319 residential unit total has been reduced to 265. Additionally, a privacy fence has been added to the west side of the property and access from East Avenue has been eliminated. Two people spoke in favor of the project - one noting that the long-time owners of the property (now deceased) had expressed a desire for senior housing on the parcel. A Garland resident said he recently put some money into improving his home. “It’s time we do something with the neighborhood,” he said. “I like the new proposal. I’m for it.” The Town Board took no action on the incentive zoning application.

Public thank you from the 14th Annual “Day of Remembrance” On Friday, September 11, the Brockport Volunteer Firefighter’s Association Inc. held their 14th Annual “Day of Remembrance” or Vigil at Station #4 on South Main Street, Brockport. The program opened with a service at 8:30 a.m. which closed with the ringing of the House Bell at 8:47 a.m. Representatives of the fire service, law enforcement, EMS and the Armed Services were present at the monument throughout the day. The closing began at 6:30 p.m. with the Circle of Gold, which remained on the monument throughout the closing. Past Chief Lawrence Vaughan and Past Chief John Rombaut coordinated the day’s events with the help of many active and support members of the Brockport Volunteer Firefighter’s Association. They would like to thank the support of the Fire Commissioners, the many neighboring department members that spent all or part of the day at the site and everyone from the community that came to the opening or closing. The committee wants to thank the following for their wonderful support by providing food throughout the day: Wegmans, Walmart, Barton’s Hots, Salvatore’s, Mark’s Pizzeria, Domino’s, Kirby’s, Brightly’s and Partykas. The event also had the support

of Thelma Rombaut, Barbara Vaughan and the granddaughter of past member David Clark, with their donation of desserts. Provided information

Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents “A Tribute to Rochester Composers” The Brockport Symphony Orchestra, celebrating the start of its sixth season, will present “A Tribute to Rochester Composers” on Friday, October 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the historic sanctuary at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street in the Village of Brockport. Admission is free, however any donations to the orchestra and canned items for the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf will be gratefully accepted at the door. Under the baton of music director Jonathan Allentoff, this concert will showcase the wide range of repertoire written by Rochester composers, including exciting symphonic works, lively marches, and heart-felt songs. The following guest artists and ensembles will be featured on the program: Mary Wojciechowski, Emmanuel Sikora, Brockapella Vocal Ensemble, and the Golden Eagle String Band. Mary Wojciechowski, guest vocal artist, recently performed as soloist with the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra at the 2015 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. She has performed numerous opera and Broadway roles on the stage and was invited to perform in the Philadelphia Pops Festival Chorus under the direction of jazz legend Peter Nero. A local newspaper writes that Wojciechowski “not only has a great voice and style, but she likes to tell little stories before singing which makes her presentation even more enjoyable.” Wojciechowski will perform songs by noted Rochester composers Alec Wilder and Charles Strouse.

Emmanuel Sikora, guest composer and piano soloist, is a native of Western New York. Recently featured by the Society for New Music and the Smithsonian Institute, his works have been broadcast on WSKG Television & Radio and recorded by Russian pianist, Uliana Kozhevnikova. Sikora will perform the world premiere of his work entitled, “Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra.” Reflective in nature, the work combines filmic passages in the orchestra with soaring melodic lines in the piano. He will also perform three original piano pieces on the magnificent grand piano at St. Luke’s. The Brockapella Vocal Ensemble, a local favorite, will make a special guest appearance on the program. Founded in 2011, the ensemble is comprised of Brockport students and alumni who enjoy singing popular standards and contemporary pieces. They will perform three selections: Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Hallelujah, and I Hope You Dance. The award-winning Golden Eagle String Band will join the orchestra for Rulison’s “Rochester Schottische.” Founded and directed by William Hullfish, the ensemble has been performing in the Northeastern U.S. since 1978. The band has recorded for Smithsonian/Folkways and toured under a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The program also includes works by David Diamond, Howard Hanson, Daniel Chazanoff, and William Glynn. Following the concert, Parish Hall will host a dessert reception celebrating Homecoming & Family Weekend. Provided information

Sigillo Chiropractic Upper Thoracic Hump With aging comes a tendency for the head and neck to shift forward from the shoulders. Over time, this tendency will make the upper back more rounded and noticeable. This area of the back is sometimes referred to as the “hump Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. pad,” and it’s a result of the body depositing fat over the newly exposed area. More technically it’s known as upper thoracic hump, a reference to the thoracic part of the spine. The condition can contribute to pain in the arm, hand, neck, shoulder and back. Even more crucially, it can affect breathing. It’s been determined that patients with pronounced upper thoracic hump - a result of what is called hyperkyphotic posture - have a higher morbidity rate from heart disease. Chiropractic care can address the condition with realignment of the thoracic vertebrae, the bones that make up that upper portion of the spine. People who have had treatment have reported an easier time drawing a breath. Their posture and appearance are also greatly enhanced. Talk with your chiropractor about ways to keep your posture correct and to avoid the condition know as upper thoracic hump. Presented as a community service by

On Friday, October 9 at 10 a.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the special occassion. “We’ve been hard at work remodeling our space to include a wine and beer bar,” said Alba Alonci, owner. “We are excited to have a great wine and beer selection and the ability to pair them with meat and cheese trays for a quick appetizer, happy hours, and to include a cocktail and wine of the day.” What began as a small local dining room in 2005 has grown to more than double its original space in just ten years, and now employs 32 staff members. Grandpa Sam’s Italian Kitchen has a warm and cozy feeling, while being able to accommodate both small intimate dinners and larger parties.

Whether as a farmer in Realamonte, Italy; a WWII prisoner of war; or a father, son, grandfather and friend - Sam was known for his generosity, farming and gardening skills and his amazing Italian cooking. Grandpa Sam passed away years before the restaurant opened, so in honor of how much his grandchildren loved him and all he had done, they named the restaurant in his honor. Grandpa Sam’s Italian Kitchen serves Italian cuisine in the heart of Spencer-

Spencerport author David B. Seaburn releases new novel If “write what you know” are words to live by, then Spencerport author David B. Seaburn should have fodder for many years’ worth of books. The wisdom gained by the author’s 30-year career as a marriage and family therapist and tenure as a parish minister contribute broadly to his fifth novel, More More David B. Seaburn Time (Savant Books and Publications, July 2015). Readers describe it as a compelling and thoughtprovoking story of six intertwining lives set against the limits of time. Through his characters - lively, funny, a bit lost or wounded, yet resilient and hopeful - Seaburn explores issues that every individual faces during a lifetime. How do we make relationships work? Who can we trust and love? What is the impact of loss on our lives? How do we use the time allotted to us, even though we have no idea how much time we actually have? “I think that we are always wrestling with these questions; we are always looking for answers,” Seaburn says. “It’s through this process that we make sense of our lives and give them meaning.” A free book launch party, open to the public, will take place Thursday, October 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Writers and Books, 740 University Avenue, Rochester. The community is invited to stop by and hear Seaburn’s reading from More More Time. Provided information

Opinion/Comments Questions Brockport’s enforcement of parking restrictions Brockport is a beautiful village. I don’t believe, as many of our elected officials, that it is the “Pittsford of the west side of the county.” Brockport is so much more. It is small, yet cosmopolitan because of The College at Brockport. It is quaint and charming and still very much a pretty good example of small town America. People are friendly, and your neighbors are your friends. Drive around the village, and it won’t take you long to understand there is something unique, and special about Brockport. The canal brings a constant flow of tourists to shore, and they too enjoy the entire experience that is Brockport. My sister-in-law thinks so, or she did. She splits her year between her home in South Carolina and her cottage in the Thousand Islands. Between the two locations, she spends several weeks a year staying with her sister and me in the village. This is always a special time for us all. This year however, was different. My sister-in-law’s dog was mauled by a large, vicious dog, and at 10 p.m. we needed to rush the dog, Winky by name, to the emergency vet hospital across from MCC. My sister-in-law was in no condition to drive, so I pulled her car into the yard, off the driveway, and I drove. We left the hospital after midnight without the dog who needed surgery to close the wounds. We arrived home, and exhausted, we all went quickly to bed. In the morning my wife and her sister went back to get the dog. I remained home, and when I moved her car to mow, discovered there was a parking ticket on her windshield. It appears there is an ordinance in the village against parking in your yard. I did not know there was such a restriction. It would seem that many residents of our quaint little village are also unaware of this parking ordinance. I got into my car and spent an hour cruising the streets of the village. What I discovered was concerning to me. I found nine cars parked in front yards, none of them with tickets on their windshields. I also recorded three trucks, seven boats, five trailers and three campers and none of them had tickets either. I returned home and ran into a friend in my driveway. He is also a village resident, and after I explained what I had been doing and why, he told me of several examples of “selective enforcement” of that particular ordinance. His examples were drawn on local political lines. In his terms, it depended totally on which faction of political action you supported. He suggested that perhaps my sister-in-law was ticketed because in the past I had written letters questioning local politics, notably dissolution of the village and the expense of our larger than necessary police force. I told him he was wrong. I refuse to believe our chief of police would foster such actions in his force. I certainly hope that is an accurate assumption on my part. I do however feel that the out of state license plate may have been an enticement for the ticket. Out of state visitor, a ticket, $30 for the new village court, and she returns home poorer but wiser about her visits to the charming Village of Brockport. I must admit that I personally approve of the village’s parking ordinance regarding yard parking. Unless we are entertaining, the driveway and street are sufficient for our needs, as I am sure they are adequate for all residents. However, I take offense with the “selective enforcement,” to use my friend’s term. Why did my sister-in-law deserve a summons, and the other 27 violators did not? If the new village court is so in need of revenue, they passed on $810 of fines just on that one night. Curious, huh? In Brockport we have a police force of 15 and a budget line of over a million annually. This cost is necessary because the village has a college, and of course that means disorderly college students for 10 months out of the year. But, if the police force is necessary to protect residents from the

weekend revelers of SUNY Brockport, why is time wasted writing summons for parking in the yard on quiet streets in quiet neighborhoods, and done in such an irresponsible and selective way? Like I said, I approve of the ordinance. My problem is the selective nature of its issuance. If the law is no parking on yards, write tickets for all who park illegally, not only one distraught out of town visitor with a mauled pet. Jonathan A. Keck Frazier Street, Brockport

Exceeding tax cap affects all There may be some confusion about what is meant by the “tax cap” and why it’s a big deal that the current Sweden Town Board went over the tax cap by three times the amount they should have. The tax cap was established by our current governor, Andrew Cuomo. The law states that you aren’t supposed to raise taxes by more than 2% or the current rate of inflation, whichever is lower. The current Sweden Town Board raised the tax rate 5.09%. The rate of inflation was only 1.56%, so most boards around the state stayed at or below a 1.56% raise. The Sweden Town Board went over that cap by more than three times the amount they should have. 5.09% divided by 1.56% equals 3.26. They raised our Sweden Town taxes by more than three times the amount they should have. The kicker here is that they also gave themselves a 2% raise in compensation for being our representatives on the Sweden Town Board. Lucky taxpayers whose representatives stayed at or under the tax cap will receive a rebate. We will not get a rebate for our town taxes paid. Only those that paid Village taxes will see a rebate because the Village Board stayed under the tax cap again. Village taxes are separate from Town taxes. Town taxes do not pay for any Village services. Please look at your tax bills. It could be Village taxes (for Village residents only), Town and County taxes (for Town and Village residents because Villagers are also Town residents) or School taxes. Look at the assessment that our Town Assessor came up with for your property. That is what all your taxes are based on. Ask yourself if you think the town board and assessor are doing a good enough job and vote for someone who cares about your bottom line instead of their own pocket. They should know that they are affecting all your tax bills. According to the letter (issue of 9.20.15) from our Assessor, it appears that he does not.

Letter of thanks to the Sweden Town Board As a homeowner on High Street in the village of Brockport, I’d like to thank the town of Sweden for the work they have done at the High Street Cemetery this summer. The town always does a good job of mowing and maintaining the cemetery but the improvements this summer were very welcome. The new sign looks great and the headstones that have been repaired are so much better than they were. Thank you Sweden Town Board for the improvements you made to my neighborhood. EPA set to begin building demolition at former Diaz site, Holley According to a press release from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, funding is in place and work on the first phase of site cleanup, the demolition of the remaining on-site buildings (except for Warehouse 9, which is located to the north of Jackson Street across from the main property), is about to begin. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently delivered equipment and supplies to the site and made arrangements for field support services. Clean-out of the buildings to prepare them for demolition will soon take place. It is anticipated that demolition of the buildings will start in early October 2015 and will be completed by December 2015. An air monitoring program will ensure that dust suppression operations function as designed, action levels are not exceeded and the public and on-site workers are protected. Should action levels be exceeded during the work, an air monitoring network will immediately detect it and

the EPA and their contractors will take corrective actions, according to the press release. Future cleanup work includes relocation of an existing 12-inch water main that runs through the center of the site along Jackson Street and South Main Street. This work is anticipated to start in spring 2016. The site includes the Diaz Chemical Corporation facility, 40 Jackson Street, Village of Holley, and parts of the surrounding residential neighborhood. The Diaz Chemical facility is situated on an approximately five acre parcel of land. It is bounded on the north by Jackson Street, where residential parcels and a parcel of land owned by Diaz chemical, which includes a parking lot and a warehouse, are located. To the east, it is bounded by residential parcels on South Main Street. To the south and west, it is bordered by Conrail railroad tracks, beyond which lie undeveloped land, a former Duffy-Mott

Corporation, Inc. building now used as a storage/shipping facility and a small tributary to the East Branch of Sandy Creek. The Diaz Chemical facility was initially developed as an industrial plant in the 1890s and was used primarily for tomato processing and cider vinegar production before being purchased by Diaz Chemical in 1974. Diaz Chemical was a manufacturer of specialty organic intermediates for the agricultural, pharmaceutical, photographic, color and dye, and personal care products industries. The Diaz Chemical product line varied over the years of operation, but primarily consisted of halogenated aromatic compounds and substituted benzotrifluorides. An accidental air release from the Diaz Chemical facility occurred on January 5, 2002, when a reactor vessel in a process building overheated, causing its safety valve to rupture and release approximately 75 gallons of a chemical mixture through a roof stack vent. The release consisted pri-

marily of a mixture of steam, toluene and 2-chloro-6-fluorophenol, as well as related phenolic compounds. The mixture landed on properties in the residential neighborhood immediately adjacent to the facility and was visible as red colored droplets on homes. Soon after the release, residents complained of acute health effects, such as sore throats, headaches, eye irritation, nosebleeds, and skin rashes. As a result of the release, several residents voluntarily relocated to area hotels with assistance from Diaz Chemical. On July 22, 2004, the site was placed on EPA’s National Priorities List. More information may be found at EPA’s website: http://wwwepa.gov/region02/ superfund/npl/diazchemical/ Questions about the demolition work may be directed to Lou DiGuardia, On-Scene Coordinator at (732) 906-6927 or by email at diguardia. lou@epa.gov or John DiMartino, Remedial Project Manager, at (212) 637-4270 or by email at: dimartino.john@epa.gov
