(greatest of all time) of the Soap Box Derby.” Karlye told the Akron Beacon Journal that she was “completely overwhelmed” by her feat. “I’m so glad I was able to make history,” she said. Karlye won her first race on her first day of racing, which also happened to be her seventh birthday. She claimed her first All-American title in 2015 at age 10 in the local super stock division. In 2016, she won the rally stock division, and in 2021 she became the rally super stock champion.SoapBox Derby racing is a family endeavor for the Murphys. Karlye and her dad, Jeff, are a dedicated and hard-working team, with him setting up the car and getting her in the blocks for the race. Her mother, Amy, works at the bottom of the hill loading the cars onto the trailer to go back up the hill. Karlye is a skilled driver with competition from all over the country and the wins are sometimes by a fraction of a second. She attributes her success to practice and hard work. One year when Karlye came in second, she jumped out of her car to hug her friend who won first. She received a Good Sportsman award for doing that. This year, Karlye’s neighbor, Kristen Trujillo, who is assisted by Jeff Murphy, won ninth place in the All-American Soap Box Derby in the rally super stock division. Provided information

The online learning component of microcredentials is another way the programs enable student success, particularly for those who may be juggling the responsibility of family, healthcare needs, transportation issues or jobs. Upon completion of a micro-credential program, students receive an official college transcript that documents their earned academic credit as well as a specific digital badge that highlights those core skills and competencies that employers search for on resumes, LinkedIn pages and other social media channels. Additionally, earned micro-credentials generate SUNY academic college credits which are transferable and can be applied toward additional academic degrees in the future including: •GCC associate degrees and certificates •SUNY to SUNY Pathways and Seamless Transfer programs •GCC’s many (200+) transfer agreements with baccalaureate institutions •Most colleges and universities nationwideTuition assistance is available through SUNY’s Reimagine Workforce grant. For eligibility requirements, contact Tish Williams, Project Coordinator, Stay Near, Go Far, Reimagine Workforce Grant at prwilliams@genesee.edu, 585-343-0055 Ext. 6318. Stay Near, Go Far is funded by a sub-award from the NYS Department of Labor through a U.S. Department of Education Stabilization Fund Reimagine Workforce Preparation grant, administered by SUNY RF. The First Congregational Church of Spencerport UCC invites all local first responders (firefighters, 911 operators, EMTs and paramedics, and police officers) and their families to a special service of worship entitled “We Honor You, Our Brave First Responders.” This event will take place on Sunday, September 11, at 10 a.m. Following the Worship Service there will be a Reception in the Church Fellowship Hall at 11:15 a.m. The event is to show gratitude and recognize these individuals’ sacrifice and service to the community. RSVP to Paula, the church’s Administrative Assistant, at 352-3448.
Several property owners attended the public hearing and voiced opposition to a ban, instead suggesting that regulations regarding setbacks, visibility and size be put in place. Tabling the proposal leaves the Board with several options: re-working the proposed law and convening another public hearing; adopting it as is or voting it down as is; or not addressing the issue again. information
The three Great Lakes Boards will host joint webinars in English and French on August 30 and 31, respectively, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Information shared will include current and forecast conditions within the Great Lakes basin. Both events will include presentations by the International Lake Superior Board of Control, International Niagara Board of Control, and International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board. The boards will share an overview of current and forecast conditions of the Great Lakes and discuss water levels throughout the system. In addition, an update will be provided on current work of the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River Adaptive Management Committee. Due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions in various communities in both Canada and the United States, this meeting will be virtual and hosted using GoToWebinar. Register in advance to participate.
The church is located at 65 Church Street, Spencerport, one block west of South Union Street. Parking is available in the municipal parking lot across the street, and along Church Street and West Avenue. The church is handicap accessible.
Today’s competitive workforce is in a constant state of evolution. The introduction of new systems, products and services, and the drive for improved efficiencies in an ever-challenging marketplace require employers to evaluate, update and realign teams to best meet the changing demands of their industry. To help employees build their skill sets and keep up, Genesee Community College is offering enrollment for its Business and Commerce Micro-credential programs available this fall semester, which begins September 6. Micro-credentials are academic programs, similar to degree programs, that have been dramatically trimmed to just 9 to 15 credit hours that include only core courses relevant to specific skills, training, and knowledge in that discipline. Designed to be earned in as quickly as one semester, a Micro-credential is the ideal way to build a resume to take advantage of career advancement opportunities, get started in a new industry or even to explore a career path without the commitment of an expensive or time-consuming four-year degree.
GCC’s Micro-Credential programs offer students a high-quality education in a reduced time frame and limited cost - only course tuition plus course-related books and fees. Business and Commerce microcredential programs available for enrollment for the Fall 2022 semester include: Human Resource Management, Event Management, Professional Sales, Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain Management, Medical Office Assistant, and Accounting Fundamentals.“Whilenoneof us can predict the changes that will affect our industry, organization or jobs, the best way to ‘future proof’ our careers is to consistently sharpen our skills and expand our capacity,” said Dr. Lina LaMattina, director of Business Programs.

Westside Challenger Tennis is based on the United States Tennis Association motto that “people of all ages and abilities should have an opportunity to participate in the game of tennis.” The fall program will be held on three Saturdays (September 17, 24, and October 1), from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. at the SUNY Brockport tennis courts or Tuttle South gymnasium. Participants should plan on attending each of the three dates. Specially-trained tennis teachers will work with all participants, providing instruction tailored to a given participant’s ability. Equipment and refreshments will be provided at no cost. This program has a limited enrollment of 25 participants, accepted on a first come, first served basis. Students with special needs will be given enrollment priority. Those interested are encouraged to get registration forms as soon as possible. These forms are available upon request at westsidechallengertennis@gmail.com. Applications are due by September 6. Provided information and photo

The benefits of quitting e-cigarettes are well understood in the medical community and are quickly becoming more mainstream knowledge. Health care providers encourage e-cigarette users to make quitting a priority for themselves and to speak with their health care team about options that can help them succeed. This may include clinical trial participation if appropriate. ORCA-V1 is being conducted at five institutions in the United States, including Rochester Clinical Research. The study will learn more about the effectiveness and tolerability of 3.0 mg cytisinicline taken for 12 weeks in combination with behavioral support in people trying to quit vaping. Cytisinicline is a plant-derived treatment structurally similar to nicotine and is believed to aid in smoking and e-cigarette cessation by binding to the nicotine receptors in the brain. The study is open to adults at least 18 years of age who are daily e-cigarette users, are not currently cigarette smokers, and intend to quit vaping. Those interested in joining the study are asked to call 585-288-0890 or visit trial/quit-e-cigarette-smoking-interest-list/.https://www.rcrclinical.com/clinical-Providedinformation
The FDA-approved non-nicotine smoking cessation therapies, varenicline and bupropion, can improve rates of smoking cessation, but they can be associated with troublesome side effects and are not specifically approved for use in e-cigarette cessation. Additional treatment options are needed in order to help more people successfully quit vaping and reduce their e-cigarette-related health risks.

The Tower Box Office will reopen on Monday, August 29, when tickets will be able to be purchased by phone at 585-395-2787, or in person. Who are these three music makers? They are Matthew Sperber (guitar, bass), Benny Haravitch (banjo, bass, guitar), and Charlie Coughlin (fiddle, mandolin), and they have been friends since their teens. Together, they have been featured as emerging artists by both the Greyfox Bluegrass Festival and the Golden Link Folk Singing Society. Their musicianship and performance style led no less than the late Joe Dady, the revered string player, to exclaim “These guys are the real deal!” The Brothers Blue have gone into the recording studio several times, with their album Ghost Town being called “a well-honed, fine-tuned record that expertly cuts a piece out of the bluegrass lexicon with its stark instrumentation and lush — plaintive at times — vocals,” by Rochester’s City Newspaper According to Haravitch, the bard of the three, their performances are “as well-rounded and polished as river rocks, always reflective of the hills and lakes” of Western NewSUNYYork.Brockport’s up-to-date COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found on its ticketing website, the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at brockport.edu/coronavirus. Participants sought for study of investigational e-cigarette cessation therapy Rochester Clinical Research is one of the five select cities enrolling eligible participants into ORCA-V1, a U.S. Phase 2 clinical research study evaluating the effectiveness and tolerability of cytisinicline, an investigational, plant-derived treatment for e-cigarette cessation in adults who use e-cigarettes daily and intend to quit vaping. A report showed that approximately 11 million Americans currently used e-cigarettes in 2019. While nicotine e-cigarettes are thought to be less harmful than combustible cigarettes, they remain addictive and deliver toxic chemicals that may result in irreversible lung damage or cardiovascular disease. Currently, there are no FDA-approved e-cigarette cessation treatment options, and individuals wishing to quit vaping are left without assistance. In a recent study conducted by Achieve Life Sciences, Inc., approximately 73% of adult e-cigarette users responded that they intend to quit vaping within the next three to 12 months. More than half of those who intended to quit even sooner, said they would be extremely likely to try a new prescription product to help them do so. These statistics show the need for approved treatment options and the importance of trials, such as the ORCA-V1 study.

food system.
Diane Eggert, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Federation of NY, said, “Farmers’ markets offer more than just food, but an experience, entertainment, and the pleasure of meeting your neighbors and community members, making your trip worthwhile. They are also the perfect way for consumers to fight against the inflation we have all been facing. The foods at farmers’ markets are fresh and last longer than foods purchased at big box stores and are higher in flavor and nutrition. In addition, nutrition programs, such as the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program and the expanded FreshConnect Checks program, help make the foods at farmers markets accessible to more consumers. It’s a great time to celebrate farmers’ markets and we welcome everyone to come out and find out what they are all about.”

The Department of Agricultures’s FreshConnect Checks Program encourages recipients to use their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at participating farmers’ markets. The program provides $2 incentive coupons for every $5 in SNAP benefits spent with the market, increasing the purchasing power of SNAP consumers by 40 percent. A full list of markets participating in the FreshConnect Checks program is available at https://agriculture.ny.gov/farmersmarkets.Also,newthisyear,theCounty Veteran service agencies across the state are now able to distribute FreshConnect Checks to Veterans, Servicemembers, and their immediate families, greatly increasing the number of sites distributing checks from 31 last year to 62 this year. In addition, the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) promotes local farmers by expanding their sales at farmers’ markets and farm stands and fosters healthy communities though the consumption of locally grown foods. Consumers who are eligible are provided with coupons to use for fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers’ markets, farm stands, and mobile markets in NY. If you are a low-income senior (aged 60 years or older) or individual enrolled in WIC, living in NY, you may be eligible to receive coupons.
