The Hilton Education Foundation’s piggy banks are hungry so the Hilton community’s children don’t have to be. Be on the lookout for 13 piggy banks placed in businesses throughout Hilton, then feed them with your spare change. In January, the pigs will be picked up and 100 percent of the money collected will be donated to the Cadet Cupboard, which provides food during school breaks for children in need. The piggy banks will be auctioned off during the Hilton Education Foundation Comedy Night Under the Stars on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Deerfield Country Club. Look for more details coming soon. The banks were painted, each with a different design, by Hilton High School art students, and are at the following locations: Apple Country Veterinary Hospital, 516 North Ave.; Arlington Restaurant, 14 Main St.; Carmestro’s Restau-
rant, 50 Canning St.; Heinrich Collision, 60 Gorton Ave.; Hilton Family Pharmacy, 32 Main St.; Hilton NAPA Auto Parts, 109 Lake Ave.; Hovey Square Liquor,

LIFT CHAIRS Prices Starting at

The more limber you are, the less likely you are to injure yourself while involved in some strenuous activity or in a traumatic event, like a fall in the house. An excellent way to stay limber and flexible is to stretch Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. regularly. It’s a good idea to stretch not only before an athletic activity, like playing tennis or golf, but also before any sort of physical exertion, like cleaning the house, shoveling snow or gardening. It’s also a good idea to stretch at the conclusion of such activity, when muscles are warm and supple. Tendons and muscles that are stretched are less likely to tear when they are suddenly put into motion. Also, increased flexibility in the neck, upper back and shoulders can improve respiratory function. Stretching will also minimize the aches and pains that can pop up after a tennis match or a round of golf. The beauty of stretching is that it’s an activity that requires no special equipment and takes only a few minutes a day to be effective. There are stretches designed to work every joint and every part of the body. And there are stretches that would be appropriate for your lifestyle and for the particular activities you engage in. A chiropractor can show you a set of stretches that’s right for you, and show you how to perform them properly. Presented as a community service by

Eagles double-up Hawks by Warren Kozireski Kendall’s girls basketball team used a 14-1 second quarter run to pull away from visiting Holley in a 48-23 victory - their final game prior to the holiday break. Tania Arellano scored eight of the 14 points in the second quarter run to help put the Eagles up by 16 points, but the Hawks got four points each from Mackenzie Ferranti and Samantha Barniak in their 9-4 spurt to end the half down by just nine points. Kendall stepped up the defensive pressure in the second half and allowed only seven points over the final 16 minutes; and three of those came from the foul line. Senior Jamie Treat scored her first points of the season and the first field goal of her career with a three-pointer near the end of the contest. Leading scorer Arellano had a game-high 18 points with 16 rebounds while Taylor Kingsbury had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles. Point guard Elizabeth Rath handed out five assists and had three steals while freshman Taylor ReQua helped with eight boards. For Holley, Barniak had a team high ten points with ten rebounds while Jade Underwood led all players with 18 rebounds despite being listed at just 5’5” and chipped in four points. Ferranti finished with five points. Kendall enters the break tied for second place with Keshequa in Class C3 and just one game behind first place Naples.

New fire truck added to Brockport’s apparatus fleet Thursday, December 11 Brockport firefighters were at the Market Street station to receive their new fire apparatus. Quint 230 was delivered by Empire Emergency Apparatus, Inc. of Niagara Falls. The new truck is a Rosenbauer 105’ aerial with a platform at the top of the ladder. This platform ladder is mounted on a Quint. The Quint is capable of bringing the aerial ladder, ground ladders, hose and water to the scene. It is equipped with a 2,000 gallon per minute pump. The platform, while it is new to Brockport, is a mainstay with many departments across the country. It provides a safer environment for firefighters and it is easier during a rescue for the victim to climb onto the platform than onto a traditional open ladder. The truck committee, consisting of Gordon Bemis, John Alexander, Scott Wainwright, Michael LaDue, Laurence Vaughan and Charles Sanford, has been designing the truck, drafting the specifications and investigating what is best apparatus for the future of the Greater Brockport community for over three years. They say they are pleased with the results of their efforts and the final product accepted by the firefighters. This new vehicle was purchased for $909,000. While this seems like a staggering amount, fire apparatus with the capabilities this truck offers range in price from $800,000 to $1,500,000, according to committee members. The commissioners believe they purchased the best truck for the community at a reasonable cost to the taxpayers. Provided information

Hilton Education Foundation’s Comedy Night Under the Stars Jan. 24 The Hilton Education Foundation’s annual fundraiser Comedy Night Under the Stars - is set for Saturday, January 24 and promises to be even bigger and better than last year’s sold out event. This year’s Comedy Night will be held at Deerfield Country Club in Brockport and will feature Rochester’s premier Cabaret Duo of Phyl Contestable, also known as the Reverend Mother, and Alan Jones. The duo started at the Changing Scene revolving restaurant in downtown Rochester for what was supposed to be a two-week contract – they left four years later. They have since performed as the opening act for Bill Cosby, Rich Little and Jackie Mason and have been guest art-
ists with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brockport Symphony. Alan Jones is the director of choral music at Spencerport High School and NYS School Music Association’s Sectional Festival Committee Vocal Jazz chairperson. Contestible is a general music specialist at Churchville-Chili Intermediate School. The evening also features comedy by Hilton High School’s own Tuesday Night Live, a silent auction and refreshments. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 presale and $15 at the door. To purchase tickets online, visit www.hiltoneduca-
Preservation League seeks entries for 2015 awards The Preservation League of New York State is seeking nominations for its 2015 Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards, which recognize significant achievements in historic preservation throughout New York State. The postmark deadline for nominations is February 12, 2015. The awards will be presented on May 13, 2015 in New York City at the historic New York Yacht Club. “Preservation and reuse of our historic buildings is fundamental to the economic revitalization of our cities, towns, and villages,” said Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League. “The restoration of our historic neighborhoods, Main Streets, and underutilized buildings continues to create jobs, provide housing, promote tourism, stimulate private investment, and conserve energy, resources, and open space. Our annual Awards program allows us to highlight projects that could one day provide new examples of best practices in historic preservation.” The League especially encourages nomi-
nations that may provide case studies or models incorporating energy efficiency, adaptive reuse, or New York’s Rehabilitation Tax Credit program. The Preservation League awards program is supported by a grant from the Arthur F. and Alice E. Adams Foundation. To download a nomination form, visit the Preservation League’s website at www. preservenys.org. ACROSS THE DIVIDE It may prove helpful to learn about how other cultures and religions observe the grieving process in hopes of better coming to terms with death. Jewish mourning rituals focus more on the bereaved than the body. By custom, the body is buried within 24 hours, if possible, without embalming, in a plain wooden coffin. Mourning centers on sitting “shiva” in the home after a ritual healing meal. Survivors cut their clothing to symbolize the tear that death has produced in life. The entire family receives visitors while sitting in low chairs, with the intent of creating discomfort that symbolizes the experience of pain. Formal mourning may continue for 30 days, and
nearly a year if the deceased is a parent. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

This year we humbly thank you again for your support and donations as we collected and gave out 732 coats and items of winter wear!

Brockport’s Oliver Middle School joins the world in Hour of Code event The Hour of Code, a one-hour introduction to basic computer science, is the largest international educational event in history: Over 78 million students have participated - including every interested student at Brockport’s Oliver Middle School. Launched in 2013 by nonprofit Code.org®, and adopted immediately by OMS, Hour of Code is designed to demystify code and help students prepare for a future surrounded by technology. “Our Hour of Code program is a statement that Oliver Middle School is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills,” says technology teacher Casey Coon. “Coding helps with college and career readiness. It helps kids develop math skills and utilize language competencies in order to comprehend the task at hand.” OMS eighth graders took part during their regular technology classes, following coding tutorials based on popular characters from Disney’s “Frozen” or the Angry Birds game. They will have a full computer coding unit later in the year, along with the option to continue with computer science courses. Brockport offers video game design in ninth grade and AP computer science in conjunction with The College at Brockport. Sixth-and-seventh-graders signed up to participate: All 25 slots were filled every day for five days straight. Code.org is an organization dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. The Capital Project Phase III work is projected to begin in the summer of 2015 and will end during the 2016-17 school year. Work will include replacement of rooftop HVAC units, replacement of radiators and water pumps, repairs around windows and doors to stop cold air infiltration, flooring, new tennis courts and playgrounds. Also, the construction of a bus loop in front of the elementary school will separate bus from vehicle traffic at arrival and dismissal times to create a safer environment. Once this project is complete, the district will have completed almost $40 million of capital construction work with zero tax impact. Provided information

New winner crowned in GCC’s “Play to Get Fit” challenge The Health and Physical Education department at Genesee Community College congratulates Wolcott Street School in Le Roy for winning the 2014 Play to Get Fit Challenge. Le Roy unseats Byron-Bergen, which had captured the title two years in a row. This is the third year GCC has conducted the program. The Genesee Play to Get Fit Program was created for third, fourth and fifth graders in the GLOW (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties) region to show how many minutes they spend engaged in physical activity outside of school. Children keep track through a specially designed “Play to Get Fit” calendar log. Walking, biking, running, skating, swimming, playing a sport, playing tag, playing on a swing set and other active, creative games are all eligible for active “credit.” However, video fitness

Major developments in local master plan for walking and biking trails Much progress is evident in the development of a Master Plan for Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic in the greater Brockport area (Brockport, Town of Sweden and Town of Clarkson), according to Ray Duncan. Duncan is the chairperson of the Walk! Bike! Brockport! group sponsoring the project to achieve safe and environmentally attractive walking and biking trails in the Brockport area. The group, together with the Village of Brockport Mayor Blackman, wrote and received a $50,000 grant from the Genesee Transportation Council to develop the master plan. On Wednesday, December 17, Duncan met with Tom Robinson and Sam Tanner. Tanner is a College at Brockport student intern from the Department of Political Science, interested in public policy. Duncan and Tanner were briefed by Robinson who is the project director from Barton & Loguidice. His firm specializes in designing active transportation plans and won the competitive bidding for the grant to develop the master plan. In the meeting, “We had a briefing from Tom on how the project is going. He showed us detailed maps thus far generated on accident locations, intersection problems that need fixing and ranking of roads in terms of safety, ease of use, etc. for pedestrians and bikers, Duncan said. “The meeting went extremely well. It was very informative and enlightening. We
are right on track as the project due dates have been laid out, from August 2014 to August 2015. Duncan also said that members from the local steering committee have held one meeting, conducted a bicycle tour of the greater Brockport area, and conducted a pedestrian tour as well. “These tours and more additional information will identify how and in what ways bicycle and pedestrian traffic can be improved in terms of safety, ease of use and sensible flow, Duncan said. “This means building shared lanes, as in New Campus Drive out to Redman Road, making major intersections safer for foot and bike traffic. A public meeting on this will be held in late March 2015. The meeting was followed by a second meeting which Duncan and Mayor Blackman set up with college officials to start a committee to promote the College at Brockport becoming a “Cycling Friendly University, According to Duncan, the meeting was prompted by a bicycling tour through the campus when Tom Robinson stated, “This campus is set up perfectly to become a Cycling Friendly University. If the committee is successful, it would make The College at Brockport the seventh such designated university campus in New York State, Duncan said, adding that it is an unforeseen bonus to the Walk Bike Brockport Master Plan. Brockport freight depot gets new purpose by Kristina Gabalski A newly opened self-storage business in Brockport is taking advantage of both the old and the new to bring modern convenience and security to customers while preserving an important piece of village history. Brockport Storage is located in the historic freight depot at 149 Park Avenue. In addition to its original use as a railroad depot, the building also housed the warehouse of Stull Lumber Company for many years. Owners Peter Feltner and Dave VerSteeg purchased the building a year ago and have spent the last twelve months restoring the building and adapting the interior to house 90 self-storage units (5’x14’) for rental. The two grew up locally and own another self-storage facility on the westside. They say they were initially looking for land to build a new facility to expand their business. Then one day, VerSteeg was inspired after driving by the freight depot. “Dave called me and asked, ‘What do you think?’ ” Feltner remembers about the idea to purchase the depot, restore it and repurpose it into a new business. The restoration/revitalization project included a new roof, new stairs, ramps, a rear loading dock and secure automatic doors with keypad access. The job was a huge one, but both Feltner and VerSteeg say the process moved along smoothly thanks in part to the help of the former owner Bill Stull, the Brockport Planning Board and local contractors. “Bill Stull was great to work with and so was the village,” both Feltner and Ver Steeg say. “It was a positive experience.” The two explain that it was very important to them to keep the character of the original building intact, while at the same time bring the property back to life and transform it into a modern self-storage facility. “We wanted the outside to go back to the way it was when it was new,” they say. Historic paint colors were used for the exterior and the original front windows and door were restored. Inside, over 90 percent of the space has been converted to self-storage units. The building is fully insulated, dry, and access is obtained through a state-of-the-art keypad controlled entry. There is 24-hour video surveillance with eight cameras and moving items in for storage is accomplished by way of the loading dock at the rear of the building which includes an eight-foot wide garage door and a roof overhang. The building is also handicapped accessible. At the front of the building are two offices - one which serves as the storage rental office and the other (15’x17’) which is available to rent. Feltner and VerSteeg say new water, sewer, utilities and cable were all part of the restoration project. Wainscoting on the interior office space walls and hardwood floors give the front area a warm, vintage feel. The two say their business endeavor is more than just providing self-storage to the community - it is a way to honor the area’s history. “The restoration, recycling, reuse and refurbishing facet was very important,” VerSteeg notes. Feltner and VerSteeg say neighbors and passers-by have expressed their approval. “They say it’s great, they love the building,” VerSteeg says.
The historic Brockport depot now has a fresh look and a new purpose. Provided photos above and below left.
Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman is also happy with the results. “I’m very pleased with the attention to historic preservation that has been given to the exterior of the building,” she says. “It looks great.” Brockport Storage is celebrating its grand opening through the end of 2014 with special deals for new customers. VerSteeg and Feltner say additional information and photos of the depot’s transformation are available at www. brockportstorage.com.
