Ebola. Human trafficking. Prescription drug trade. Debris in outer space. Disarmament. These were just a few of the topics Churchville-Chili students debated at this year’s Hilton Model UN Conference in November. The United Nations Association of Rochester’s (UNAR) Model UN is a club for students in grades 9-12 from almost every school in Monroe County. Each school represents a different country - Belgium was represented by Churchville-Chili’s 16student contingent and advisor Patricia Chodak. This year over 600 students from 34 schools participated in these Model UN committees to create solutions for current world issues. The Churchville-Chili student delegation sat on a number of committees, including Social, Humanitarian and Cultural; UN International Children’s
Emergency Fund; World Health Organization; UN Human Rights Council; Economic and Social Council, and the General Assembly. The UNAR was founded in 1945 to support the mission of the then-new United Nations. The Model UN is a “program to provide a diverse group of informed students and faculty from all over the world a forum for addressing global concerns in a real world context. Our conferences foster global citizenship and address current world issues related to regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights, women and children, economic and social development, and the environment. We strive to provide students with a better understanding of the inner working of the UN and to foster skills in diplomacy and compromise.” Provided information
Retired teacher honored at Model UN in Hilton For 35 years, on a Friday afternoon in November, buses from schools as far away as Syracuse have arrived at Hilton High School for the two-day Model United Nations Conference. This year, the person who made it all possible, Robert Phillips, a retired Hilton teacher, was honored at the Model UN Advisor Dinner on November 7. Phillips and his wife, Mary, also a retired Hilton teacher, ran the conference for over 30 years and now Phillips is in charge of the United Nations Association of Rochester Conference held in March at St. John Fisher College. At the dinner, Phillips was presented with a certificate and it was announced that the Hilton High School Model UN Scholarship would be named after him. The scholarship is given annually to a senior who has participated and shown leadership in the Hilton Model UN for three years. The Hilton Conference is a student-directed two-day event that provides debate opportunities for both new and experienced high school delegates. This year, Hilton hosted over 600 delegates from 34 schools. Students chaired 18 different committees based on actual UN committees that debate proposals, present position papers and vote on resolutions. Schools select the country/countries they want to represent and delegates prepare before the conference by researching that country’s stand on issues and current problems. Delegates take an active role in committee representing their country while following parliamentary procedures. Principal Brian Bartalo explained to students that Hilton High School is an International Baccalaureate school and that Hilton students strive toward 10 learner profile traits, one of which is open-mindedness. “When you represent your nation, your school and yourself, try to be open-

Dr. Ettlie has published over 60 refereed journal articles, made over 100 professional presentations, worldwide, on the management of technological innovation, and has authored five books. In addition to being an opportunity to learn and collaborate with students from other schools, Model UN raises funds for charity. Students sell carnations and compete in “Jar Wars” to see which committee can raise the most money for a charity selected by the keynote speaker. This year’s recipient is UNICEF, a leader in the fight against the spread of Ebola in West Africa. Model UN participants raised close to $2,000 over the two-day conference. Provided information
