Following at least three years of planning and some seed money, Roberts Wesleyan officially began a men’s volleyball program with the team’s first matches versus Farleigh Dickinson January 17 and 18. “It’s one of the fastest growing sports; a place called First Point USA provided us with some grant money to get started as well, so some of the leaders in men’s volleyball across the country provided some seed money to go ahead and do it,” Athletic Director Bob Segave said. “It’s a great sport for us to add with our women’s program. It made sense for a lot of reasons, and we’re excited to host a Division I school for the first couple of matches.” Mike Dedee, who played volleyball locally at Bishop Kearney and Genesee Community College, was

He was honored to be named one of the two inaugural co-captains for the Redhawks. “It took some time to find the right guy (coach), but once we found coach it was great,” Caton said. “Once he got on board it was reaching out to recruits…and he’s just put in the work to get us to where Hilton senior Ella Clark (center) we need to be, and we just need to scored her 1,000th career point on give back what he’s given us.” January 19 during the Cadets’ 62-37 Caton did not play on the first night, but started the third set on win over Fairport. Local artist featured in NYS Canal Corporation Video by Barbara Burke

During Intuitive Painting Workshops offered through the On The Canals program, Jeannine guides participants to create works of art through texture, color and intuition. Provided photo.

Artist and teacher Jeannine Pelusio grew up in Greece. She attended Athena High School and studied at Alfred University and SUNY Brockport, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts. While at Brockport, Jeannine worked as an assistant to artist Judy Soprano, a prolific local painter and art teacher. Soprano is quoted as saying, “I opened the door to my creativity, and found my soul.” Opening doors to creativity is exactly what Jeannine Pelusio accomplishes with her Intuitive Painting Workshops, offered through the On the Canals program. “In 2018, I attended a workshop on intuitive painting, and I fell in love with the process. I found it so liberating. To paint without a reference image, applying paint to a canvas based on how you are feeling in the moment, looking at the textures and colors that appear, and following that lead to create an image. It’s so exciting to me. I wanted to share what I found with my students,” Jeannine said.

She held a few intuitive painting workshops in her home studio, Stony Point Art Studio, located in Ogden. After a friend introduced her to the On the Canals program, she approached them about offering intuitive painting workshops as one of their activities. In September, Jeannine started offering workshops at Cornhill Navigation Center, and the popularity of intuitive painting grew. Classes for drawing and painting for youth, ages nine to 18, were also added. In late fall, Jeannine was contacted by the NYS Canal Corporation about being featured in one of their videos for the On the Canals program. Jeannine said, “Making the video was fun. You can come in with absolutely no painting and drawing background and leave two hours later with an experience, an accomplishment, and a beautiful painting. I think part of the success the participants are finding is really driving home the understanding that, it is not about painting a picture that you can hang on the wall; it is about taking something that you are feeling, putting it down in paint, and discovering something about yourself. Red Osier Brands now at Spencerport Bowl by Tami Raco Spencerport Bowl, the area’s iconic bowling alley, began in the early 1960s when Nicholas Tantalo built the town’s only bowling alley on farmland he owned. His grandson, Michael Progno, began managing the 16-lane bowling alley in the 1970s. It was leased out for a period in the ‘80s, but the Progno family took it back in 1993 and continues running Spencerport Bowl today. Throughout most of the past 80 years, Spencerport Bowl provided the bowlers and the community with hot food and beverages. Providing freshly prepared food ended abruptly during the pandemic. “Covid shut our kitchen down,” said Spencer Progno, manager of Spencerport Bowl. Recently, Spencerport Bowl brought food services back into the alley and the community through a partnership with Frank Vicaretti of Red Osier Brands. Vicaretti, a Spencerport resident, owns the rights to Red Osier Brands for the distribution of their legendary foods as well as Cheesy Eddie’s desserts. For several years, Vicaretti has been bringing these local favorites to the area’s biggest events, such as the Jazz Festival and the Lilac Festival. Sammies and Sweets is the name of the food catering company that Vicaretti owns and operates throughout the county. In addition to the events, they provide catering and meal delivery with the Red Osier Brands from their Henrietta location. Last fall, Frank contacted the Progno family to discuss bringing the Red Osier and Cheesy Eddie’s foods into the bowling alley. “I was happy to bring Red Osier foods in the alley,” said Spencer Progno. “We can only eat so much pizza,” he laughed.

As fall leagues began, the food services also resumed after several years. “Now leagues come in early and grab a hot Red Osier roast beef sandwich before bowling,” said Vicaretti. In addition to the Red Osier foods and Cheesy Eddie’s desserts, Vicaretti and his team also serve bowler favorites like chicken nuggets, French fries, nachos, and warm pretzels. Vicaretti also provides catering, home delivery, and take-out orders from their new location in Spencerport. “We have delicious meal packs with Red Osier roast beef, au jus, and desserts available for delivery throughout the entire county.“ See www.sammiesnsweets.com for catering information. “This has been great, bringing people back in to eat, and they can even take their meal to the bar and have a drink with it,” said Spencer. Red Osier

Brands is currently in the area where the ice cream shop is located during the summer months. The full kitchen is being remodeled, and Vicaretti plans to move into the newly updated kitchen soon. Open bowling is also making a comeback, according to the Prognos. They offer open bowling every weekday evening, except Tuesday, as well as weekends. “Bowling is such a great family activity. It is good to see the families together, and now we can provide bowling with good food,” said Progno. Spencerport HS Principal Sean McCabe to retire Spencerport High School Principal Sean McCabe will retire in August 2024, following a 30-year career in education. The Board of Education formally approved his letter of intent and commended his exceptional leadership in the district for the last 18 years, with 13 of those years as principal. Ty Zinkiewich, superintendent of schools, hired McCabe as an assistant principal in 2005 and offered the following remarks. “Serving as a high school principal is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, positions in education. Sean has done a remarkable job supporting thousands of students throughout his career here in Spencerport and I will miss working along his side. Sean cares deeply about every student and staff member in the high school and his integrity and character are second to none. Although I am happy for Sean and his family, Spencerport is losing a great man, and he will be missed.” Reflecting on his time at Spencerport, McCabe expressed his gratitude towards the families and community for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving as an administrator in the district.

He further stated that it has been a true privilege, working with incredible colleagues and staff and serving the thousands of students through the years. McCabe commented, “At graduation, it always amazed me how much each student grew as a person over the four years of high school, and what wonderful young citizens of the United States are headed into adulthood. Often, we hear it said that this current generation of students are not like when ‘we were in school.’ No, they are not. In my opinion, they are better in many ways. Every day at school, I witnessed kindness, caring, humor, humility, acceptance, and a joyfulness that comes from being young, and it made me a better person. I will miss that.” This announcement allows the superintendent to work with the admin-

Sean McCabe istrative team and board of education to search for the next principal with a start date in June. This would afford an opportunity for a smooth transition with McCabe, whose last day will be the end of August. Provided information and photo

Check Out Hunger campaign underway at Tops markets Tops Friendly Markets is committed to eradicating hunger in its local communities and is running its annual Check Out Hunger campaign through February 10, 2024. No matter the season, hunger plagues every corner of our community, and with food insecurity at an alltime high the need continues to grow. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, millions more Americans had difficulty securing enough food in 2022 compared to the year prior, including 1 million more households with children. Over 2.5 million pounds of food was raised for area food banks during the recent Food 2 Families and Food for Families campaigns which ran at Tops locations from November 12 to December 24, 2023.

These campaigns help the community support food banks in their own backyards including FeedMore WNY, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, Foodlink, Food Bank of Central New York, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Vermont Food Bank, and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. “We want to thank the community for their generosity,” said Tops president, Ron Ferri. “We are committed to helping battle food insecurity and

couldn’t do it without the wonderful donations of food and funding we receive during these campaigns. We ask that if you are able, please continue to help support your fellow neighbors in need next time you check out at Tops.” Making a contribution to the Check Out Hunger Campaign is easy. When shopping at Tops simply tell your cashier you’d like to help Tops Check Out Hunger and a donation of $2, $3, or $5 will help provide food for your local food bank. choose your house wisely When you are looking for a home, there are some practical matters you should consider when making your selection. 1. Check the physical condition of the property. Ask if the owner had done any recent repairs or renovations. 2. Check the location. Are schools, shops, medical facilities and jobs convenient? Is the size of the land area suitable? 3. Assess the interior design. Will the layout work or can it be modified to suit your needs? Take into account your furniture, but don't let it dictate your decision. 4. If the house has been renovated recently, did the local building department issue a permit and was the work approved? 5. Is there any development or road construction planned for the general area? 6. Are tenants currently leasing the house? You might have to compromise on some of these aspects, because no house is perfect. We can help you consider these issues and choose the best home available. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 585-734-3362.

Better technology helps nonprofits have greater community impact Local nonprofits have an amazing “upgrade” opportunity for their older technology thanks to support from two local organizations. The Rochester Area Community Foundation (RACF) and Shift2 (formerly known as The Shore Foundation) have launched a Nonprofit Tech Trade program to help multiple area nonprofits upgrade their office computers and responsibly recycle their outdated technology. As a pilot, RACF has provided funding to cover 100 replacement computers for this program. Local nonprofit organizations will exchange their old desktop tower/laptops and receive a newer, refurbished computer with a Windows 11 operating system and updated features (better computer processor, RAM speed, etc). All laptops are paired with a Dell AC power charger and all desktops are paired with an LCD flat screen monitor, computer keyboard, computer mouse, all power cords and connecting cables. The first wave of computers has been committed to 16 local nonprofits. Still, interested nonprofits should visit www.shift2nfp.org/nptechtrade to complete a short eligibility/interest form to be added to a waiting list to receive computers when more become available. The primary requirements for the recipient organizations is that they are a recognized nonprofit with the IRS (EIN number), represent an educational institution or cause, and can physically travel to Rochester for the exchange of the computers (trading the old for the new). Shift2 installs Microsoft citizenship licenses (as a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher) and this requires the computer to be distributed to educational institutions and/or nonprofit charitable organizations. Using obsolete computers and software can be a significant security risk because they no longer receive security updates, and are not equipped to protect against newer malware and viruses. They also make it hard to keep other applications up to date because they stop supporting outdated systems. “The expense and coordination to upgrade computers and other technologies can be a burden for any organization, but

especially smaller nonprofits and educational organizations,” said Megan Alchowiak, Executive Director of Shift2. “We’re so thankful that RACF and Butler/Till stepped up to help make the transition simple for local nonprofits.” Butler/Till, a local marketing agency, partnered with Shift2 to host the pilot Nonprofit Tech Trade Program at their offices on January 24. Butler/Till team members also volunteered to help sort the old computers for recycling and pick the correct replacement computers for each organization. “As Chief Technology Officer at Butler/Till this event not only aligns closely with our commitment to the Rochester community as both a 100% employee-owned (ESOP) and certified B Corporation, but has been a bit of a passion project for me personally,

with merging both technology and giving back. This event represents what I hope will be the first of many in the future of our partnership with Shift2 and Causewave. Our goal is to make a major impact starting with these organizations and I cannot wait to see what the future holds,” said Mike Della Porta. The planners hope that additional funding will become available to expand the program and serve more nonprofits in need of upgraded technology. Those interested in learning more about the program or supporting its expansion can learn more at www.shift2nfp. org Provided information

Historical Horizons Lecture Series at GCC The Historical Horizons Lecture Series is set to make a return in Spring 2024, presenting a lineup of four Wednesday lectures at Genesee Community College, sponsored by the GCC History Club. The lectures, scheduled to take place at GCC’s Batavia Campus in the Conable Technology Building, Room T102 at 7 p.m., promise to offer a diverse range of topics that appeal to both history enthusiasts and the general public. All lectures are free of charge, underlining GCC’s commitment to providing accessible educational opportunities to the community. The series kicks off on February 7 with a lecture titled “’Opera Was Not Written for New York Alone’: Circuit Chautauqua, English-Language Opera, and the Making of an American Middle, ca. 1910-1930.” Renowned scholar Cory A. Norling, PhD Musicology, will delve into the rich history of the Chautauqua Movement and its impact on the American Midwest, exploring the role of staged opera as a cultural bridge. Following this, on March 6, historian Jess Maxfield will present “The Cautionary Tale of Encephalitis Lethargica:

Epidemic Disease and Historical Memory.” Maxfield will shed light on the encephalitis lethargica epidemic of the early 20th century, drawing parallels with the ongoing conversations surrounding global pandemics. April 3 brings us to “The Worst of the Worst: The Story of the Confederate POW Camp at Belle Isle in Richmond During the Civil War” by Associate Professor of History, Derek Maxfield. The lecture promises a compelling exploration of the Belle Isle camp, challenging popular perceptions about Civil War prisoner of war camps. The series concludes on May 1 with a book talk by Civil War Historian Victor Vignola titled “Contrasts in Command: The Battle of Fair Oaks, May 31-June 1, 1862.” Vignola’s award-winning work on the Battle of Fair Oaks offers a fresh perspective on this pivotal moment in Civil War history. Genesee Community College invites the public to join them for these lectures, providing a unique opportunity to engage with historical topics and esteemed scholars. Provided information

Ogden representatives join bipartisan call for action to repair CSX-owned Gillett Road bridge On Monday, January 22, Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale joined Senator Chuck Schumer, Congressman Joe Morelle, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, County Legislator Robert Colby and town officials, as well as representatives from local police, fire and EMS at a press conference at the Ogden Town Hall to call on CSX to immediately repair the Gillett Road Bridge. The bridge was closed indefinitely on December 6, 2023, due to structural safety concerns and uncertainty over who was liable for the repairs. Due to the bridge’s location as an important access point for the town, Supervisor Zale contacted local, state and federal government officials for support. It has since been determined that CSX owns the bridge, and it is therefore their responsibility to repair its structural deficiencies. “When we were first told that the Gillett Road bridge was closing indefinitely, we knew that this determination would be unacceptable to our residents,” said Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “This bridge provides a critical access point for the Village of Spencerport, our senior communities, our school district and businesses, and leaving it closed due to a disagreement of ownership was just not going to work for us. I am grateful to Senator Schumer, Congressman Morelle, County Executive Bello and all our partners in government who answered our calls for help and for recognizing the need to resolve this issue. My hope is that we can carry this momentum forward to find a permanent resolution for our community.” Provided information

Cy Fox is one of the CCCSD students whose artwork is on display at the Start Here RIT Art Show, which runs through February 3.

In addition to the pieces from Campbell and Shavonne, six pieces created by Churchville-Chili students are featured in the art show. They are Deniz Dawani, Dominic Fargnoli, Cy Fox, Jace Neuman, Kaitlyn Pozzuolo and Rylee Rossetti. An award ceremony was held during the opening reception on January 19. The exhibit will remain open at the Bevier Gallery at RIT through Saturday, February 3. This year’s Shared Spaces Show at Nazareth University will feature six pieces from Churchville-Chili High School students and staff. Shared Spaces is a long Nazareth art show tradition that brings the artwork of local high school art educators and their students together into one shared gallery space. The students create their own inspired work and they exhibit their work alongside an artwork of their art instructor. Those displaying art at the show are art teacher Jordyn Wolcott and sophomore Azura Jones, art teacher Jonathan Woodard and junior Arlo Sushko, and art teacher Kelly Bosco and senior Sydney Goettel. The show will run from Friday, February 9, through Sunday, March 10. Provided information and photo

Byron-Bergen receives Excellence in Student Services award On Saturday, January 20, the Genesee Valley School Board Association (GVSBA) met for their annual breakfast hosted by the Byron-Bergen Central School District. The event included superintendents and representatives from districts throughout the GLOW region as well as Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes, Assemblyman Steve Hawley, and Gregg Torrey representing Senator George Borrello. The gathering served as an opportunity for the school administrators and school board members to discuss issues with their state representatives and honor the 2024 recipients of the Excellence in Student Service awards. “I was very pleased with the nominations as they came in this year and the wide range of programs,” said GVSBA Coordinator Pat Burk. “It shows that schools are thinking outside of the box to make what they do much more accessible as well as entertaining and really, really special.” Twenty school districts and Genesee Valley BOCES received Excellence in Student Service awards. Byron-Bergen was honored for the district-wide therapy dog program which launched in 2021 through the efforts of district staff and retired Byron-Bergen teacher Jen Faro. The program began with one therapy dog, Pinot, owned by Faro, and has quickly expanded to include six dogs and additional visiting dogs from the Rochester-based not-for-profit, RocDogs. “Pinot, Maya, Dottie, Stew, Hula, and Daisy are valuable members of our team,” said Byron-Bergen Superintendent Pat McGee. “These therapy

The award was accepted by McGee, Director of Instructional Services Betsy Brown with her therapy dog Dottie, and Byron-Bergen High School Counselor Kristie Holler with her therapy dog Stew. “The therapy dogs are here for all of our students as well as the staff,” said Brown. “There are students who specifically visit the office just to see Dottie and receive some love and attention. Research shows that interacting with therapy dogs reduces stress and anxiety and I’m thrilled that Dottie and I can be active participants in the program.” The event also included a performance by the Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School Jazz Ensemble led by HS Band Director Kevin Bleiler, breakfast catered by the Byron-Bergen Food Service Department, and discussion sessions in which school and elected officials discussed rural education. Roberts Wesleyan University wins 2024 NCAA DII Award of Excellence Roberts Wesleyan University Athletics was awarded the first-place grand prize for the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence at the NCAA Convention on January 13 in Phoenix. University student-athletes were recognized for their yearlong fundraising initiative for the Ugandan Water Project, which raised more than $13,000 to build three water wells in Uganda and provide fresh water to communities in need. As part of Redhawks Reachout, the university Athletics Department’s strategic community service initiative, the Redhawks selected the Ugandan Water Project after learning about the need for clean water in the country and the global water crisis, which impacts 2.2 billion people worldwide. Throughout the past year, student-athletes from multiple athletics programs engaged in several community service opportunities to raise awareness and support the financial goals of the organization. Efforts included building nearly 300 kits to reset water pumps in Uganda, participating and volunteering in the nonprofit’s annual 5k, hosting a week-long educational water challenge and championing WaterNOW, a social media fundraising event, which surpassed the students’ initial $10,000 fundraising goal. “We are so proud of our student-athletes who have inspired all of us to find creative ways to impact others through financial assistance and encouragement to communities, children and families in need,” said Roberts Wesleyan University President Dr. Rupert A. Hayles Jr. “This event stands as an excellent example of how Roberts, through the Redhawks Reachout initiative, is instilling in our student-athletes a profound sense of responsibility and compassion for their neighbors around the world.”

Roberts Wesleyan was one of 25 schools and two conferences selected as finalists for the 2024 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. The annual accolade honors its members for conducting events that promote student-athletes giving back and serving as leaders in their communities or on their campuses, and recognizes initiatives in the past year that exemplify the Division II philosophy, community engagement and student-athlete leadership. This is the third time Roberts Wesleyan has been recognized by the national Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for this honor, and the university is the division’s first two-time winner in the award’s 11-year history. In 2021, the university won the grand prize for its work with Golisano Children’s Hospital, and placed third in 2023 for its inaugural meal-packing event for Rise Against Hunger. “I am continually amazed by the compassion and community-oriented spirit of our student-athletes,” Roberts Wesleyan University Executive Director of Athletics Bob Segave said. “Their steadfast support of the Ugandan Water Project last year is already making an impact with the development of new rainwater collection systems, water filtration stations and handwashing stations at three schools in Uganda. We are honored to receive this recognition once again from the NCAA.” The university was awarded a $2,500 prize, which will be used for future community engagement initiatives and events. Assemblyman Steve Hawley attends a press conference on education spending in the state budget.

and did not keep her promise to local school districts that they would not see a decrease in their foundation aid funding from the previous year. This comes as the state has put more regulations on school districts such as last year’s mandate requiring all school buses to be electric by 2035. Hawley is frustrated that upstate rural and suburban school districts will not receive the funding they need. “Gov. Hochul is at it again,” said Hawley. “It’s ridiculous our schools should have to take a back seat while the governor continues to hinder them with less funding and more regulations. The governor should remember her promise to ensure foundation aid for local school districts would not decrease and give them the resources they need. I cannot and will not vote for any state budget that does not put the education of our children first.” Provided information and photo

Assemblyman Jensen earns a spot on City & State Health Care Power List Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,CGreece) was listed in City & State’s Health Care Power 100, which identifies the most important public officials, health care leaders and other individuals who are seeking solutions to challenges in this area every day. New York has faced a severe health care worker crisis, in which nearly 34,000 workers quit due to the COVID-19 vaccine requirement, mental health struggles and unfair wages. Providers across the health care continuum in all areas of the state are in dire need of critically important frontline staff, and Jensen has championed for the health care field to get back on its feet. Jensen, the top Republican on the Assembly Health Committee, has been proactive on a number of policy issues. Jensen has said the state needs to explore a potential interstate nursing licensure compact to boost nurses in New York, including joining a bipartisan push calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to extend coronavirusera executive orders on interstate licensing. In 2022, the state budget included bonus payments for certain frontline health care workers if the provider was enrolled in Medicaid. Eligible employees include nurses (i.e. RN and LPN), aides, technicians, physician assistants, therapists (e.g. occupational and physical), public and non-public school nurses, BOCES and medical assistants. However, other frontline health job titles were excluded, which led Jensen to call on Gov. Hochul and New York State Department of Health Commissioner

Assemblyman Josh Jensen on the assembly floor in Albany. Mary Bassett to expand eligibility for all frontline health care and support staff. Last year, Jensen stood in support of the efforts to push for increased Medicaid reimbursement for our health care system. He urged prioritizing funding for nursing homes and providing assistance to clear the patient backlogs. Jensen has showcased an unwavering commitment to providing a better health care system for all New Yorkers earning his spot on this year’s City and State Health Care Power 100. As for this year’s legislative session in Albany, he has plans to get Medicaid back on track, and he will remain steadfast on Early Intervention and supporting senior care centers. Winter programming at the H-P Senior Center The Hilton-Parma Senior Center invites the Hilton-Parma community to their programs and events that are year-round and available to anyone. Join Deputy Jonathan Payne from Zone-C of the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office for the monthly program, Dish with a Deputy, to chat and have your questions answered. The program is held on select Mondays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Upcoming dates are February 5, March 4, and April 1 with more dates to follow monthly. The Senior Center invites everyone to learn more about computers and technology. Classes are taught by Daniel Jones, an independent instructor provided by Monroe County to each Senior Center. Jones provides older adults with computer, internet and social networking skills to enhance their lives and keep them connected. His computer courses and seminars break down the barriers of fear and intimidation often associated with learning new technology, providing attendees with a greater understanding of the options and tools available through a patient, fun and easy-to-learn approach. Pre-registration is required to attend these free classes that will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on the following days: •February 8 – Digital Photos: The Big Picture •March 14 – What is The Cloud? •April 11 – The World of Podcasts •May 9 – Digital Music Mania. Presenting with Pizza on Monday, February 26 is about the April 8 Total Solar Eclipse. Join Mark Minarich from the Astronomy Section, Rochester Academy of Science, to learn about this rare phenomenon. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. and is followed by a full pizza lunch. The cost is $5, which goes towards presenter fees. Evening Meals are typically held the third or fourth Wednesday of the month, with dinner being served at 4 p.m. and entertainment starting at 5 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., so attendees can save space with friends or make new ones. Evening meals are open to any seniors in Parma, Hilton and the surrounding communities The cost for these dinners is $11 per person and the registration deadline is the Monday before the meal. Attendees are encouraged to bring an item to donate to the Hilton Food Shelf as they are always in demand of non-perishables; this is optional, but greatly appreciated. Upcoming meals (served and catered by Foster’s) are: •February 28 – meatloaf dinner and It’s a Magical Night with Rich the Magic Man •March 20 – corned beef and cabbage dinner and Irish/St. Patty’s Party music by Peg Dolan

•April 17 – Chicken Cordon Blue dinner and The Sounds of Mike Sidoti. Chair Yoga with Sue promotes strength, flexibility, balance, and mindful attention. This approach uses the support and safety of a chair to adapt yoga positions. Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques will be offered. This class is suitable for all fitness levels. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. Session I runs from February 6 through March 12 and Session II runs from March 19 through April 23. The cost is $38 per session. A class called Better Balance, also taught with Sue, will help participants stay mobile, strong, and steady on their feet. Balancing both sides and various parts of the body increases resilience, independence and postural stability, which can boost confidence. Receiving the benefits of balance practice can also improve overall well-being and prevent or minimize falls. This workshop will run all Thursdays in May from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and the program fee is $30. Senior Express transportation service is available year-round for seniors in the Town of Parma. Every Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m., the driver picks up participants and provides transportation to and from a pre-selected destination for groceries, shopping, and lunch on your own afterwards. Destinations include Walmart, Aldi, Wegmans, Tops, Dollar Tree, Goodwill and more. Destinations are subject to change and the transportation fee is $2. The Senior Center also offers lunches weekly on Tuesdays with a suggested donation of $3.50. Transportation can be provided for those in the Town of Parma. All meals are prepared by Goodwill ABVI and reservations are required 10 days in advance. Cancellations sometimes occur, allowing attendance to be accommodated on shorter notice. Upcoming meals are: •January 30 – Turkey Tetrazini •February 6 – Pork Riblet •February 13 – Chicken Salad on Bread •February 20 – Stuffed Shells •February 27 – Chicken a la King. A calendar and menu can be emailed, mailed, or picked up at the H-P Senior Center office along with a newsletter that outlines all activities, including various opportunities not listed here. To register for any of these programs and for more information, contact the staff at the Hilton-Parma Recreation & Senior Center at 392-9030 or visit http://www. hprecreation.org.
