Bill Andrews’ new book explores Brockport’s changes through time by Kristina Gabalski In his latest book, Brockport: Through Time, Bill Andrews explores the transformation of the village over the past hundred years. “The book really attempts to document changes that have taken place since the early 20th century,” explains Andrews, who has lived in Brockport since 1967. Those changes are many and attest to the resilience of the community. The Erie Canal was vital to the early growth and prosperity of the village, but over time it grew to become a recreational area rather than a means to ship freight. The College at Brockport, with 8,600 students, has grown out of a much smaller “Normal School” with a few hundred students while the former thriving manufacturing base of the community’s economy has almost vanished. “Brockport is the only (Erie) Canal town that has a college right on the canal,” Andrews says. “The village evolved from a canal town - where life focused on the canal, to an industrial town to a college town.” He notes that it was only recently - in the years since WWII, that the college has been a “... big factor in the life and economy of the village.” In the midst of change, however, many treasures of the village have been preserved. Brockport was “fortunate” regarding the preservation of its historic architecture, Andrews says, due in great part to two events: Firstly, an economic slump around 1900 meant “owners couldn’t remodel, which would have destroyed Victorian facades,” he says; and secondly, in the 1960s, thanks to a group of “... irate citizens rising up in opposition,” Frank Sacheli was elected mayor by a write-in ballot. The new administration put an
end to the possibility of Urban Renewal in the village and the historic downtown business district was saved. Andrews notes Brockport is a unique community with an “amazing volunteer culture” and has become a center for music, the arts and culture on the west side. He cited such groups and organizations/ businesses as the Brockport Symphony Orchestra, the Sr. Chorus, the music program at Brockport Central High School, Bill Hullfish and the Golden Eagle String Band, A Different Path Art Gallery, and public art such as murals and sculpture which enhance the village and college campus landscapes. Programs at the Lift Bridge Book Shop also add to the cultural mix of the community, he adds. Brockport: Through Time (Arcadia Publishing) is Andrews’ fifth local history book and a sixth is currently in press. The book features vintage images and retails for $22.99. Andrews is a native of Colorado and an emeritus professor of the College at Brockport. He currently serves as village trustee/deputy mayor. Andrews lived in Norway and France before coming to Brockport to teach at the college and when asked what has kept him here so long and fueled his interest in the community, he responded, “You should bloom where you’re planted.”

B-B teacher Roxanne Wood honored with Golden Bee Award Every year the Byron-Bergen Student Council selects a teacher at the Jr./Sr. High School who goes above and beyond - in distinguished classroom practice, professionalism and collegiality, and in setting high standards for themselves and for their students. This is the third year for the Byron-Bergen Golden Bee Award, which began with an idea from Sr. High School Secretary Sally Mech, who thought students should have the opportunity to recognize outstanding teachers. On June 9, the Golden Bee Award for 2015 was given to health education teacher Roxanne Wood. The award was presented by Student Council Secretary Grace Pulcini and Treasurer Clare Fraser. They explained the criteria used to determine the winner: the ability to create a classroom
environment conducive to learning, commitment to students and their learning, creativity, and contribution to the wider school community. Wood was presented with a Golden Bee plaque, certificate, and crystal paperweight.

Editor’s note #3 So many have helped move the Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald publications forward in community responsiveness and reflection. Since its beginnings, Suburban News, Westside News Inc.’s first newspaper that celebrates over 60 years of community service, has provided a forum for ideas, a means to showcase what is unique and also what is common but noteworthy, and offered a support system for communities - and people - in our readership. We were perhaps at times naïve about, or undaunted by, the scope of the issues. As editions were added - first the HamlinClarkson Herald, then a total of three editions of Suburban News forming the newspaper package - options for news grew as well. Aided by talented writers and photographers, the publications have forged ahead with important coverage of local topics including landfill creation, expressway construction, motocross tracks, village dissolution, wind tower farms, lake erosion, taxes, assessments and re-assessments, noise, traffic, chicken-tending in residential areas, police department services and costs, gratitude for veterans, poignant and solemn coverage of final journeys home, business expansions, major fires, agriculture, environment, countless festivals and special events, town and village history at a glance, municipal infrastructure improvements, code revisions and - just good stories in a Free. Newspaper. We can claim a number of “scoops” in the local news business over the years and plenty of coverage that “inspired” other media to pursue some of our story lines. For a weekly to have a scoop over a daily newspaper takes a little doing and may be impossible in today’s techno-driven marketplace where news is many times “news” prematurely. In this week’s issue, as in the issues of ‘yesterday’, the newspapers, supported not by subscription but in large part by the advertisers’ messages, offers a mix of high quality content. Free. Newspaper. During the month when I seriously began to pinpoint a date to leave the editor’s post, the company received notification that, in addition to awards for advertising design, judges in a statewide contest who had rated content from 2014 designated three entries for awards. In a workplace looking for balance and fairness, I found it fitting that distinct content areas were represented. One award went to a general news article about the rising cost of milk that included many local agribusiness owners as sources. A two-page photo spread featuring a day spent with WEMOCO students learning various trade skills ranked in a photography category and a feature article about an award-winning lotus hybridizer in Bergen also won as a feature piece. Those are good reflections of the content possibilities by any definition news, features, and photography. The newspaper content has been singled out multiple times over the years. I am blessed as an editor to have had creative freelancers who participate in the products. Articles by Cheryl Becker, Kerrie Merz, Robbi Hess, the late Darlene Flynn, Kym Woodard, the fluid almost-poetic writing of her son Christian Woodard, John Dunn’s crossword puzzles, Paul Sherman’s photos, Rick Nicholson’s ‘out and about’ images, the late Paul Humphrey’s “The Lighter Side” poems, meaningful and substantive obituaries from several sources, Matt Moore’s cartoons, Mark Ball’s “Family Guy,” Joe Reinschmidt’s folksy essays, Maggie Fitzgibbon’s touch of the Irish, Grace Griffee’s sensitive photography and her clear and compact writing, Linda Ayres’ meeting coverage, Barbara Pratt’s columns, the late Herb MacNaughton’s “Passing Parade” column that he snail-mailed from Florida, all come together with the contributions of others to form a rich history. Terra Osterling left a career job to pursue experiences in writing. It has been a privilege to see her succinct and thorough writing style grow. She appreciates the opportunity to hone her skills, which writing for the newspapers provides, and like others acknowledges she has met some accomplished and extraordinary people in the process.
Perhaps the biggest leap in community coverage happened in the late 1980s when a photographer was added to the staff. John Clifford brought a keen eye for framing a shot. Along with his love of the art as well as the craft of photography, he provided compelling images for news, features and sports. He spent a lot of time in a cobbled together darkroom in his apartment complex at first, then made himself right at home in a real darkroom in the office developing rolls and rolls of black and white film. John has stayed in the profession and continues to show the world what it looks like - clearly, dramatically, sometimes with humor. I am personally so very grateful for all I learned about good photography from him. About the same time, Tim Irving was added as a sports writer. Just out of college, Tim carved out a broad audience from a vast variety of varsity sports. The newspapers cover seven school districts - as was possible we attempted to cover as many games as possible. Staff sports writer - I lived it and I still find it hard to believe! Tim is also still involved in sports and covering them but now instead of the written word he uses a TV camera to relay the message. He and John Clifford made a dangerous pair known for a prank now and then to keep the editor on her toes. Warren Kozireski took over covering high school sports for the newspapers in as dedicated a fashion as Tim did. He attends most events he writes about, which is a commitment above and beyond in my opinion, since he does have a full time job and no student-inspired interest. Getting stats and other info correct are his primary objectives and he helps the newspapers get as many names in print as possible, whether in the sports venue or through other opportunities. Even a non-sports follower can read his articles and grasp the significance of achievements in the lives of young people. Walter Horylev was a senior photographer when he began shooting images for Westside News Inc. He’s now an octogenarian and continues to enjoy seeing through the camera lens. Some of his work took him to great heights - such as the roof of Frontier Field to photograph the Frozen Frontier outdoor hockey setup a few years ago. He’s covered many festivals, written text to accompany photo spreads, and devoted hours on standby to cover arrivals of Olympians at the airport and motorcades of a solemn nature. I put to the end my comments regarding two women in journalism who have played significant parts in the newspapers’ development and in my own life. Leisa Strabel came as a mom who knew she wanted to write. She began writing articles, returned to college and earned a degree in journalism to add to her degree in business while raising a family and caring for a loved one ill with sudden onset cancer. It’s rare to be able to write general news articles and feature articles equally well and Leisa can do just that. She served as assistant editor and learned how to do page design. She loved the work. Then as now she gives her entire, genuinely honest, personality to her writing and I have been pleased that when I have asked her to write a special story or to contribute to our recently developed themed publication, The Community Link, she continues to accept the assignment, though she now has a far different real job. And Kristina Gabalski - if she could add hours to the day she would do so and spend them writing and gardening, and home schooling, and taking Master Gardener classes and helping with 4-H activities and dozens of other activities she has committed herself to accomplish. Both demonstrate unparalleled work ethics and high standards. The end of the story can reflect the beginning, I once learned. It’s impossible to name all the people who have put their efforts into the content of these Free. Newspapers. They share similar traits - love of writing and/or photography, the need to use the written word to communicate, and the respect of a forum in which to use their talents. As the subject of an article in the June 21, 2015 editions, NYS Emmy winner Dave McKinley summed up his philosophy of news writing: Accountability. “At the end of the story, I say my name,” he said. When your name is on it, you are invested. I can’t think of one freelance writer or photographer who has not taken that concept seriously and for that matter, not one 31-year veteran editor either.

Brockport Bowl has new owners, major renovations scheduled by Westside News staff What a difference a few days can make. Brockport Bowl, a recreational cornerstone in the village of Brockport for six decades, had been closed for less than a week when new interest in ownership arose. Don Tadio, a former Brockport resident who owns the property, informed Suburban News/The Herald on June 19 that he agreed to a deal with Joe and Barb Parker of Hamlin who are now the new proprietors at the 16lane bowling center. Tadio, a property management executive whose family built the center in 1955, had leased the establishment to Ray Bardol for the past 18 years. When the two could not agree to terms on a new lease after months of discussion, Bardol opted to retire from the business earlier than he had planned. “It was unfortunate that Don and Ray could not come to an agreement. It caught many of us off guard at the Hall of Fame dinner when Ray announced his retirement at the end of his induction speech,” said Rochester USBC Bowling Association president Mike Callan. “Then a few days later our association was very pleased to hear the news that the center will remain open and that Joe Parker is involved… Joe is one of our association’s board members. Not only is this good for our association’s league bowlers, but for the entire Brockport community.” Many avid Rochester bowlers immediately assumed Brockport Bowl would suffer the same plight as other popular area centers that have closed - Olympic Bowl, North Park Lanes, Maiden Lanes and West Ridge Lanes (the old Lyon’s Den) to name a few - all of which had been knocked down months after closing. Tadio was not about to let that happen at 4660 Lake Road. “We needed to keep the center open for the Brockport community,” he said emphatically. Brockport residents were obviously saddened by the initial closing. A party was held at the beginning of the

Then just days after the June 15 “closing,” one couple got in touch with Tadio about purchasing the business. “Brockport Bowl has special meaning for us,” said Barb Parker. “Joe and I first met there on a blind date in 2001. We have both bowled there for years.” “And I worked for Ray for a while … bartending, as a mechanic, just about everything,” Joe said. Then he paused and said, “I have always dreamed of having my own bowling center.” “Joe’s a very enthusiastic, experienced businessman and I’m sure the bowlers in the community will be well served by them,” Tadio continued. Joe also owns Parker Brothers Mechanical, a Heating & Cooling company which he plans to continue managing. Barb is employed at Chili Vision Group, handling the medical billing. Tadio, whose late father Dominic ran the center for many years, has some exciting news for customers. “Of course the biggest news is that the center is not closed,” he reiterated, “but we are also excited to announce that the center is scheduled to have new automatic scoring and synthetic lanes installed. Customers will be able
to see everything when we have our ‘Grand Re-Opening’ prior to the fall league season.” Automatic scoring already exists at the center, but an improved version is in the planning, said Tadio. The wood lanes currently at Brockport Bowl are the ones that were installed when the center was originally built. After sixty years of wear and dozens of resurfacing procedures to bring the lanes to “required league and tournament specifications” they now have limited life. The transition will be made to synthetic lanes, which are manufactured in large sections and harder, thus much more durable, than wood lanes. The Parkers hope to have the center open by early August. “We will be closed for the installations and there is some painting to do as well,” Joe said. “Our goal is to retain the 300-plus league bowlers, continue the relationship with the Brockport Central School District and be the practice center for their new High School bowling teams that have been approved to start in the fall,” he specified. “There is also The College at Brockport which has special bowling sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.” “We hope to bring back the youth bowling program as well … which would make our 9-year-old son Trevor pretty happy. My two oldest spent many years bowling at Brockport. Alexis, who is 18, is graduating from the high school and Kaitlyn, who will be 21 in July, now lives in Florida,” he continued. “Trevor and Alexis bowled in travel leagues for AMF Dewey Garden Lanes this past year.” And Joe knows the sport quite well, having rolled ten 300 games, ten 800 series’ and carries an average just above the 225 mark in his scratch leagues. When one door closes, another opens. Bardol said that he will assist his son Chris with his new restaurant and party house, The North Pole, which is located in Batavia. Last weekend they were promoting the new business at the Batavia Muckdogs minor league baseball game.

Join in a glorious Fourth celebration at Genesee Country Museum Join in the 240th celebration of America’s independence this July 4 with all the pomp, music and merriment that is traditionally part of Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Independence Day festivities. The event is highlighted by the swearing in of new American citizens on the steps of the historic village Town Hall. A special ceremony to honor the nation’s birth is set in 1826 and invites members of the audience to participate. Other examples of July 4 celebrations over the years continue through the day. The 11 a.m. naturalization ceremony, where some 50 new citizens take the oath of allegiance, is a focal point of the day. In 19th-century fashion, a spirited reading of the Declaration of Independence sets the tone for the afternoon’s festivities. Traditional activities include a patriotic concert by the Geneseo Cornet Band, a pie-eating contest, egg toss, sack races, pea-shooter contests, a town ball match featuring ladies base ball teams and the firing into the sky of an hundred-pound anvil, an activity that was occasionally done at celebrations in 1830s Western New York when there were no cannons to be had. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. General admission is $18 adult; $10 youths 416; $15 seniors 62+ and students with ID; free to children three and under. As a dentist, I find that people can almost always find some “good reason” to delay needed treatment, especially if they aren’t experiencing any pain or obvious problem with the appearance of their front teeth. Most times that neglect leads to the eventual development of more severe problems generally requiring more extensive and even more expensive treatment. While that situation is bad enough it seems that the complications I’ve witnessed in the last year or two have been much worse. We’ve seen patients diagnosed with cancer who were forced to delay their treatment because long-ignored dental problems caused infections that could create devastating complications during a long course of chemotherapy. Right now I am treating a very good friend and
we are unfortunately forced to consider immediate removal of all of her remaining upper teeth rather than taking the time to properly restore them just so she can proceed with needed medical treatment more quickly. This situation could have been completely avoided had she proceeded with the necessary treatment earlier. So please resist the urge to procrastinate with your care. Complete any needed dental treatment now before problems become worse and force you to seek emergency treatment. The Hilton Education Foundation (HEF), with support from the Hilton Central School District’s Fitness and Wellness Committee, hosts the Second Annual HEF Golf Tournament and at Deerfield Country Club in Brockport on Friday, July 17. A berry of a different kind: Juneberry by Kristina Gabalski The summer berry season has truly begun and over the next few months, we will be enjoying many tiny gems from the garden and farm: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, elderberries and more, including juneberries. Juneberries, also known as Saskatoon berries, are a native North American plant and look somewhat like a blueberry. They typically have been grown in central Canada and are not as widely known here in the Northeast. According to Cornell Cooperative Extension, there are two main species: Amelanchier alnifolia - a high yielding species grown as a crop; and Amelanchier canadensis, a wild shrub or tree found in the Eastern U.S. The juneberry is a fan of cold, dry weather, meaning the plants hold up even
after the two frigid winters we have had. The fruit ripens late in June and continues into July. The berries are described as having a taste similar to sweet black cherries, or a mild blackberry with a hint of almond in the soft, tiny seed. The fruit is very nutritious, containing high levels of protein, calcium, iron and antioxidants. Juneberries contain twice as much potassium as blueberries and large amounts of magnesium and phosphorous and have about as much vitamin C, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, folate, vitamin A and vitamin E as blueberries. Finding plant material is a challenge if you want to try growing juneberries. Robb Farms on Gallup Road, Spencerport, has grown the berries a few seasons and report their 2015 crop is done now. Juneberries need two-to-three years of zero competition from other plants to become established, so if you plant them, make sure you keep the site free of weeds. Once established, they tolerate a wide range of soil pH conditions - 4.8-8.0 - as well as soil textures - coarse sand to silty clay. That’s great news for people like me who have had a struggle growing blueberries which demand acidic soil. Another

big bonus - the self-pollinating flowers are frost hardy. One thing to watch for if you try to grow the plant, the juneberry is native to North America, but prefers a bitter cold, dry climate with low-fertility soils. Here in the Northeast, high humidity poses a problem with powdery mildew and fungal diseases on young plants. Additionally, although they grow in a range of soils, juneberries will not tolerate soggy ground or standing water. Cultivars recommended by Cornell for our area include: ‘Smoky,’ ‘JB-30,’ ‘Martin,’ ‘Regent,’ ‘Northline,’ and ‘Pembina.’ The berries can be eaten fresh from the shrub and also used any way that other fruit is used - for muffins, breads, salads, jams, preserves, granola, pies, sprinkled on cereal or oatmeal, in fruit crisps or pancakes. According to Cornell, the flavor pairs well with chocolate and coffee-flavored foods. When planting juneberries, develop the site well in advance of planting. Space rows 10-12 feet apart with about 4 feet between bushes. It will take three years after planting for the first crop to be ready and bushes yield 4-6 pounds of berries annually.
