LifeQuest Community Church pitches in to keep Apple Fest grounds clean With more than 50,000 visitors enjoying the Hilton Apple Fest every year, things can get a little messy. This year, the Apple Fest Committee has asked LifeQuest Community Church to provide extra hands to help with clean up during and after the festival. They were happy to oblige. “Our church is almost seven years old and we meet at the Hilton Community Center,” said Pastor Rob Dickerson. “Since the Apple Fest takes over the whole property on Sunday, we have to find a way to worship and serve our community a little differently that weekend.” About 15 to 20 volunteers will be on hand all day each day of the festival to collect garbage and recycling material and to oversee all clean up when the festival is over. As one can imagine, it is a major job trying to keep the

grounds and garbage cans clean and recyclables in their appropriate bins. The church receives a small compensation, but mainly benefits from turning in the recyclables. The funds will go toward LifeQuest’s Community Family Fun Day – Hullabaloo. Held for the past four years in late summer, Hullabaloo is hosted by eight community churches and features free games, prizes, food and fun inflatables. This year’s event was held August 30 and drew over 400 people. “It’s our way of blessing the families of Hilton,” said Dickerson. “We are hoping to grow the event next year and offer more, but a lot of that is dependent on the budget.” The Apple Fest money will be used for LifeQuest’s portion of the cost of rentals and food.

Hamlin Royals members help out with Girl Scout’s bench project On Saturday, September 20, the Hamlin Royals youth group assisted Girl Scout Cheyenne Zaremba with completing her Gold Award project. This is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve and her project was creating five benches with different themes to be placed in various locations on Hamlin Town Hall grounds. The bench that the Royals helped assemble was community themed, incorporating all vital elements that make up a vibrant community; love, respect, friends, family, volunteering, belonging, etc. The themes on the other benches include anti-bullying, the importance of knowledge, sports, and play. They will be placed near the courthouse, the library, the tennis/basketball courts and near the playground, respectively. The Royals took turns learning how to handle the various power tools and Cheyenne engaged them in lively discussion regarding the theme of the bench while they were working. Hamlin Gold Award Benches captured the project on Facebook.

Get down to business -- Young Entrepreneur’s Academy information session Sept. 30 Open to Greece, Hilton and Spencerport students, year-long class helps students develop their own business by Grace Griffee Hilton student Noah Corette is only a junior, but already he is running his own business. Noah participated in the Young Entrepreneur’s Academy (YEA!) through the Greece Chamber of Commerce, a year-long class that helps students develop business ideas, write business plans, conduct market research, pitch their plans to a panel of investors, and actually launch and run their own real, legal, fully-formed companies. “My mom heard about the program, so we decided to go to the information session,” said Noah, the son of Cynthia and Aaron Corette of Hamlin. “I had the idea for my business before I started though.” His business is Toller Brand Game Calls, which offers handmade duck calls. A hunter since the age of 12, Noah comes from a family of hunters and decided to begin making the calls after finding an old wood lathe in a barn. Noah began classes last November, devoting about four hours a week to the program in addition to his regular schoolwork. Classes take place after school from 3:30-6 p.m. at Bryant and Stratton College in Greece and give students the opportunity to hear from business mentors and investors, and attend behind-the-scenes field trips to local businesses. Each student works with a menHilton junior Noah Corette tor throughout the program advanced to the Young Entre- along with instructors from the Greece Chamber. Noah preneur’s Academy Finals in worked with Brendan J. Greece Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber sees the importance of teaching students the ideas and tactics behind entrepreneurialism,” said Paula Guck, who now leads the program. “It is a great opportunity to bridge the gap between the education and business communities. Our business members love being involved in the program and having a chance to share their expertise with the next generation.” In May, Noah pitched his business plan to a panel of investors, who were impressed enough to invest $1,700 in Toller Brand Game Calls. The money was used to purchase a new wood lathe, drill press, band saw and other tools that now help Noah produce his game calls faster and easier. He also was selected to represent the Greece Chamber at the Northeastern Regional YEA! Saunders Semi-Finals in Rochester and out of 24 semi-finalists, Noah was selected to advance to the Finals in Washington, DC on June 11. “There were a lot of really impressive people there and I spent a lot of the time networking,” said Noah of his three-day visit. The competition takes place during the U.S. Chamber of Commerce America’s Small Business Summit which gives students the opportunity to meet and learn from billionaires who built their businesses from the ground up. Noah, along with five other finalists, had six minutes to pitch his business plan to a panel of 11 legendary entrepreneurs, including Peter Cancro, CEO of Jersey Mike’s Subs, and Phil Saunders, philanthropist and entrepreneur. While Noah didn’t place in the top three, he gained a wealth of valuable experience. “Right now I can’t handcraft enough calls to make a lot of money, but I’d like to develop a new call that I can mass produce,” said Noah. At Hilton High School, he is also a student in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, an international, rigorous pre-university course of study. When he graduates in 2016, Noah plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy sponsored by the Greece Chamber of Commerce is holding a Free Information Session on Tuesday, September 30 at 6 p.m. at Bryant and Stratton College, 854 Long Pond Road. This program is open to students in the Hilton, Greece and Spencerport School Districts. To RSVP or for more information, contact Paula Guck at 227-7272 or visit www.greecechamber.org.
Opinion/Comments
What is economic impact?
Lost in the clamor of who is to blame for the boisterous crowd of college students/alumni/parents/local residents on the streets September 20-21 is what homecoming weekend and the college in general mean to the local economy. Were all the hotel rooms in town full? Were all the restaurants busy? Did all the retailers have an uptick in sales? Did the gas stations sell more fuel? Perhaps someone should take the time to calculate the economic impact of this event. Also lost in the conversation is how many local people participated and enjoyed homecoming activities? How lucky are we to have a college football game to enjoy for
Conscious effort needed to address climate change Sunday, September 21, hundreds of thousands marched throughout the world demanding action on climate change. 120 world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations Summit on Climate Change. What can we do? A 2006 U.N. report estimated that meat production accounts for 18 percent of man-made greenhouse gases. A 2009 article in the respected World Watch magazine suggested that the contribution may be closer to 50 percent. The meat industry generates carbon dioxide by burning forests to create animal pastures and by combustion of fossil fuels to confine, feed, transport, and slaughter animals. The much more damaging methane and nitrous oxide are discharged from digestive tracts of cattle and from animal waste cesspools, respectively. In an environmentally sustainable world, wind, solar, and other pollution-free energy sources must gradually replace polluting fossil fuels. Similarly, vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains must replace polluting meat and dairy products. The large variety of widely available plantbased entrees, lunch meats, veggie burgers, cheeses, and ice creams can certainly help. Our next trip to the supermarket is a great opportunity to start the transition to a sustainable world. Our favorite internet search engine offers ample product lists, recipes, and dietary tips. $5 a ticket in a gorgeous stadium within walking distance (or a short-drive) of home? Perhaps someone should take the time to calculate the cultural value of the college with its sporting, arts and learning activities that are available to the community. Instead of blaming the college and its students for every village ailment and instead of turning every molehill of an incident into a mountain, let’s embrace what the university brings to Brockport. We need our village leaders to be smarter about managing issues that every college community faces. Rhett King Adams Street Brockport

by Kristina Gabalski A special ceremony held Tuesday, September 23, rededicated several Crimson Maple memorial trees at Churchville Elementary School. Renovation work at the school this summer necessitated the removal of some of the trees which make up a Veterans Memorial in the front lawn entrance area of CES located in the village. Gilbert Budd, Commander of the Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post #954, and the school organized the Sept. 23 rededication ceremony for the new trees. Budd spoke during the ceremonies. “We are here today to show the renewal of life and our dedication to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice by planting the new trees in their honor,” he said. He also explained the history of the community’s memorial to their war dead, which goes back to the end of World War II. “When a local resident, Bessie Chapman, the Harvey C. Noone Post 594, and several Junior Red Cross girls, embarked on a program to honor local students who had died while serving our nation in war,” Budd said. “They chose to plant eight Crimson Maples in front of the now Churchville Elementary school for each person who gave their life fighting for their country in WWII. Since then, we have planted two more Crimson Maples, for students who died in the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts.” In addition to planting new maples to replace those removed, the school replaced the old flagpole and re-landscaped the area. The changes have helped to make the Memorial Stone located in the circle with the flagpole more visible and prominent, organizers said.

Gil Budd and Lori Orologio at Memorial Stone, an area which now has a new flagpole and new garden During the ceremonies, Budd presented an American flag flown over the nation’s Capitol on Sept. 15, 2014, and a certificate to Churchville-Chili School Superintendent Lori Orologio. The flag was provided courtesy of Representative Chris Collins. Churchville-Chili school band members under the direction of Kevin Mead performed patriotic music while those in attendance viewed the trees and memorial. Fourth graders performed the National Anthem during the ceremonies. Trees were rededicated for the following deceased veterans: John Lazoration, Charles Tower, Edward Piotrowski, Maynard Carmer, Kenneth Ross, Scott Bechtold, Kenneth Boughner, Dean Smith, Stanley Andrews, Robert Adams Organizers said they hoped the ceremony would be an opportunity to both honor these former students as well as teach and inspire today’s students about American history.

Art for a cause at A Different Path Gallery Whether it’s an organization that is researching a disease that took away a friend or a group that provides a much-needed service to the community, several area artists hope to make a difference with a monetary donation from the sale of their work. Several artists from the Brockport Artists’ Guild are offering their original artwork for sale and donating the proceeds to various charitable causes. Often these artists are approached to do-
nate their work to charities that may not be the priority of the artists themselves. This exhibit gives each artist the opportunity to donate to the causes that are particularly close to their hearts. Participating in this show are artists who create Paintings, Pottery, Sculpture and more. The opening reception will be held on October 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at A Different Path Gallery. Artwork will be on display and available for
purchase until October 31. The public is encouraged to come out to the event, pick up a great piece of art and support their charities of choice. In conjunction with Art For A Cause, another exhibit will be on displaying in the upper gallery. The exhibit features historic photographs from the DiLaura Stone Company and information pertaining to the consolidation of local stone quarries in the early 1900s. Provided information

Northwood students make their mark on the world To Northwood Elementary School students and many students around the world, a dot is much more than a mark on a paper; it symbolizes the mark one can make on the world. Northwood kicked off the school year with a common theme from The Dot, the classic storybook by Peter H. Reynolds, and students were asked to think about what mark they wanted to make on the world. Available in English and many other languages, the book shares the story of a girl who begins a journey of selfdiscovery after a caring teacher challenges her to “make her mark.” What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe. What is now known as International Dot Day, which is officially celebrated on September 15, sparked an entire week of celebration for the Northwood school community. After reading the book, students worked on art projects that incorporated the theme. Laurie Steele-Sperber and Emilie Sears, art teachers, had their students each design a dot that made up a giant tree. They also had students create a map of the world with fingerprint dots. “It’s so neat to think that children all over the world, regardless of what language they speak, are reading the same book and celebrating creativity in different ways,” said Julie Rapp, library media specialist. At the end of the week, the whole school gathered in front of the building where representatives from each grade talked about how they planned to make their mark on the world. Another group of students held giant dots that spelled out “Northwood,” and each grade level

This year’s theme ties into the International Baccalaureate learner profile, which encompasses 10 traits that students aspire to be - inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open minded, caring, risk takers, balanced and reflective. Pilon Family welcomed home
The Patriot Guard Riders escorted the Pilon family to their newly renovated home and then stayed for the unveiling ceremony. The Patriot Guard Riders is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that promotes dignity and respect during ceremonies for military heroes, veterans and first
responders. Carl Pilon is a Vietnam veteran. For two months, the Home Depot Foundation and dozens of local business and community members volunteered their time and services and donated materials to renovate the Pilon family home in Hilton. The Home Depot Foundation supports the housing needs of U.S. veterans.

The Pilon family was relocated to a friend’s cottage for two months while their home was renovated. On September 24, volunteers from the community, Home Depot and local businesses gathered in front of the home as they arrived to see the renovations for the first time. When Suzanne Pilon, a teacher in the Hilton School District, and her children were diagnosed with an hereditary illness, the Hilton community sprang into action to help. The group “Hilton Cares was formed to help pool volunteers and resources. Now that the Pilon project is complete, the group plans to help others in the community that are in need. Photographs by Grace Griffee

Although more than 70 percent of homebuyers are using the internet to gather information about making their next home purchase, most will rely on a Realtor to guide them through the sales transaction process. That's why Realtor web sites are a popular virtual location for starting a home search. Buyers can investigate many aspects of the home buying process on Realtor sites, which typically showcase local listings and allow you to browse through their inventory of homes at your leisure. A good site offers photographs of every listing and information about the home. If you are excited about a listing, most sites invite you to email the agent for more information, or to make an appointment to see the property. Other features of buyer-friendly sites allow you to calculate monthly mortgage payments. Some give information about local schools, shopping and recreation in the area. Using the internet is an excellent way to start the hunt for your new home. For professional real estate advice, give us a call, Joyce Lobene at 352-8522 and Mary Lobene Bilinski at 352-8529.
