New mural depicts Bergen’s History by Kristina Gabalski A mural gracing the side of the Tulley Building in the Village of Bergen is fulfilling the expectations of Mayor Anna Marie Barclay. “The goal was to create a conversation as people walk by,” she says, and the artwork - which depicts the Lake St. (Rt. 19) downtown historic district as well as the Bergen Swamp and the early clearing of the community from the “Northwoods” by settlers from Connecticut - is doing just that. “I watch people walk by, parents with children - both small and grown - who look at the mural and see little things that kick a memory. People stand there and chat,” Mayor Barclay observes. The mural is located on the Buffalo St. side of the Tulley Building which houses the village offices. The new historical mural was completed in the summer of 2014 and dedicated just this past July. It replaces a former historical mural in the same location which was 20 years old and had begun to fade and chip. “The brick is Bergen brick and is very The “fool the eye” door on one end porous,” Barclay says. of the mural is just one of the many The original mural details and historical references had not been treated included in a new mural in the village to protect the image and an attempt to of Bergen. have it restored did not work out. Through family connections, Mayor Barclay found Robert “Chip” Miller of Elbridge, NY, an artist and art teacher who has painted murals extensively in central New York as well as in communities along the Erie Canal. Miller got to work before painting began to get a feel for the community by “talking to residents and the village historian, to hear their stories and learn what Bergen is about,” Barclay says. The brick wall is actually incorporated into the design of the new mural. Barclay says each brick was painted and grouted before the image was begun, giving the mural a unique charm and making it a part of the wall. “You’re looking into a pretty incredible project,” she says. The mural is painted with a trompe d’oeil (“fool
the eye”) look, pulling the viewer in as if he or she is standing on the street and looking back in time at the downtown of the 1800s. Included is a false doorway for Mayor W. Monroe Sage, who held the position in 1877 when the village was incorporated. “It enhances the work we have done for several years on this building to renovate it,” Mayor Barclay says. The Tulley Building houses village offices on the main floor as well as four apartments upstairs. The mural project was funded by a grant from GO ART! (Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council) and donations from Bergen businesses, organizations and residents. Barclay says Miller will visit periodically to check on the mural and to complete any necessary maintenance work. “He considers it another one of his babies,” she says.
Hamlin Beach former CCC/POW site affected by change for volunteers by Kristina Gabalski Members of the Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park are adjusting to recent changes regarding their volunteer work at the former CCC/POW Camp site. In mid-July, Hamlin Beach State Park Manager Kate Gross notified volunteers that grounds maintenance operations by volunteers at the site were being temporarily suspended on the advice of supervising attorney Kathleen Martens in the Agency Counsel’s Office. Volunteers were told they could not use or store personal equipment at the site - which they have been doing for seven years since being asked by then Park Manager Marty Howden to help clear the overgrown site and work towards creating a history trail. Gross wrote via an email that because of liability issues, work could only be done by members of the Friends Group - if they have signed Volunteer Service Agreements and are authorized
by park officials to use Friends Group owned equipment or parks equipment and are supervised by park officials on site. Volunteers would additionally need to be trained/ approved by the Region’s Health and Safety Manager to use power equipment and tools. Park staff has been completing grounds maintenance while park officials work with the Counsel’s Office to determine the appropriate level of insurance coverage that is needed for possible grounds maintenance operations to resume, Gross wrote. Ed Evans, who spearheaded the work to clear and maintain the site, says he is disappointed and discouraged by the sudden change. “I do not think any additional insurance will be purchased,” he says, and explains that he hopes to be able to continue to give tours of the site to the public. continued on page 2

Hamlin Beach former CCC/POW site affected by change continued from page 1 “So far, they have not tried to keep anyone off the site,” he says. “I don’t think they can keep me from walking around the site with members of the public who want to visit. I will certainly continue to work with any area school that wants to use our work as a teaching experience.” He says his talks - given to area school children and community groups - will now include the story about the work stoppage. Evans is happy to report that park officials have begun to remove garbage dumps at the site. The park had been using a portion of the CCC/POW Camp site to dump garbage but Evans says it is now being moved. “It is a big operation,” he says, “…(there’s a) dumpster … (they) bulldozed a turn around for the trucks.” He adds that he has received an email from the head of the Historic Preservation part of the park system, “... thanking me for the information I have been sending her. She probably is responsible for the order to remove the
dumps.” Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park acting president Dale Jennejahn says volunteers have not been “thrown out” of the site. “We will continue to be involved,” he says, “these are minor things, there have been a few rules changes.” He says liability issues should probably have been tackled years ago when work first began at the site. “No one else looked into this,” he says, and adds that Park Manager Kate Gross, “has been really, really helpful in working with us. We are dealing with the liability issue.” Jennejahn explains that there is no reason volunteers cannot go on to the site to work as long as they notify park officials and use park equipment. He says he is very grateful for all that has been accomplished by volunteers at the site. “I extend to them a huge thank-you for all the work they have done over the years,” he says. “They have done a good job.”

When Westside News Publisher, Keith Ryan, asked me to write a tribute to retiring editor Evelyn Dow, I was both pleased and nervous. Pleased to be given a forum to express my gratitude to an editor who taught me so much about newswriting, feature writing, copy editing, newspaper layout and design. Nervous because I knew Evelyn didn’t really want fanfare as she put to bed her newspaper career and because the tribute would have to get the story right - really, really right. As I began to plan out the structure of this article, my first instinct was to explain to readers how truly amazing it is to have one woman oversee all the various content of a newspaper with several editions across several communities for so many years. Larger newspapers have multiple editors who specialize in one area – politics or government or sports or art or commentary. Evelyn had to juggle all types of content and put an order and context to what, for most Westside News readers, is the only regular local news we have. Add to that the changing world of journalism and newspapers over a 30 plus year career, the demands of a community that feels ownership in the content of the paper and a stable of freelancers who have other commitments and priorities. My plan was to dissect the various facets of Evelyn, the jack-of-all-trade editor. Then I began talking to my fellow freelancers and to community individuals and to Westside News staff and I realized that it is Evelyn Dow, the human being, that made Evelyn Dow, the editor, excel. Fair. Balanced. Accurate. All the things a journalist is supposed to be. Responsible. Honest. Dedicated. Everything an employee should be. Supportive. Mentor- Evelyn Dow ing. Insightful. Traits a good boss should have. Caring. Respectful. Trustworthy. What we all want in a friend. This is Evelyn Dow. Having been on both sides of politics/journalism, myself, I know how hard it is – not necessarily to give both sides equal space on an issue - but to get the combatants to admit they’ve been given an equal forum. However, that’s the first thing Clarkson Supervisor Paul Kimball, Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard and former Brockport Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe said about Evelyn. “Evelyn is the fairest person I’ve ever dealt with,” 31year Supervisor Kimball said. “I didn’t always agree with her but I always felt she was fair and presented both sides.” Thorpe agreed. “Evelyn always made sure the reporting was accurate. She never tried to make more of a story than there was.” Lenhard echoed that sentiment saying, “The press can do bad things. I think they call it gotcha journalism. Evelyn did not do that. She handled everything with integrity.” Several editions of Westside News make it to the printing press on time every week, 52 weeks a year. It is a team effort, as Evelyn is quick to point out, but she was a big part of that effort, week in, week out for more than 30 years. When you work outside the newspaper business and realize how easily deadlines are missed, extended or ignored, you get a very different appreciation for the discipline required to get a newspaper out the door on time, every time. From word-blocked writers, to last minute advertising requests (both in and out), to technical problems in the production room, to bad weather, it takes tenacious dedication and hard work to get the job done. “Overseeing the only source of local news every week for years let alone decades is a huge and taxing responsibility,” freelancer Warren Kozireski opines. “Evelyn always handled it with grace and professionalism. Like they say about ducks, calm and cool above the water, but always paddling under the water.” The success of a newspaper also relies on content – perhaps the most difficult and subjective part of an editor’s job. Evelyn “seemed to have this vast filing system in her head where she would be able to remember the hundreds, maybe thousands of stories that ran in the paper, so that if you pitched her a story she would immediately know if it had been done before and what the angle was,” writes freelancer Grace Griffee. Kristina Gabalski explains it very well: “I’ve worked in the radio/print news media for more than 30 years, and of all my news directors/editors, there is no doubt that Evelyn ranks as the most amazing. She always made the effort to really get to know her contributors/photographers and then to tap into their passions, strengths and personal knowledge bases when making decisions regarding who would receive which assignments. Having a background and interest in a certain subject adds so much depth to reporting because one is able to ask pertinent questions and bring some expertise and experience to the finished product. Evelyn’s ability to match assignments to contributors/photographers is one of the things
that sets Westside News publications apart from other local newspapers.” Evelyn put a great deal of effort into developing her freelancers. She instructed, she encouraged, she advised and consoled. There’s a back story to most stories that get printed – how long it takes to get the interview or do the research – the unexpected twists, the roadblocks and dead ends. She was the sole sounding board for all the frustrations a writer can have. “Evelyn regularly forwarded any reader feedback she received to keep us informed about reactions to our articles in the paper,” Warren said. “Now that I think about it, I don’t think she ever forwarded anything negative, so she must have kept that away from us and bore the brunt herself.” Evelyn absolutely had our backs as reporters and writers and we knew it. That inspired all of us to make sure we got the story right. We wanted her to be proud of our work. “Evelyn has kept me connected to Suburban News for 15 years,” writes Mark Ball, “wanting to find a way to keep writing from my college days all the way to child No. 7. Evelyn is bright, honest and excellent at her craft; but even more than that she is loving, generous and a true friend.” In a sports-dominated culture, Evelyn’s love of the arts showed in the publications’ content. She gave readers the chance to experience art by publishing poetry and photography, photos of paintings and sculpture, feature stories about writers and dancers. Evelyn “always provided well-conceived formats for my photographs,” Walt Horylev writes, “and I always tried to make it difficult for her to select just a few pictures to illustrate a subject.” Diane Hickerson’s artwork was among Evelyn’s favorites and Diane’s husband Doug, as a long-time freelancer, brings some of the most compelling human interest stories to readers. Evelyn also chose content that seemed to be ahead of the times compared to other news outlets. The events of September 11, 2001 brought to the national consciousness the innate heroism and selflessness of our armed forces; fire, police and ambulance services. But long before that date, Westside News regularly reminded readers of the heroes among us and those in places far from home. Active duty or veteran, those in service knew they had an advocate in Evelyn. Another group that Evelyn made sure to champion were the disabled. Years before our society became more open and accommodating of people with disabilities, Evelyn took every opportunity to promote their accomplishments and their abilities to overcome obstacles. It’s her sensitivity to others that has made Evelyn the kind of co-worker we’d all like to have. I haven’t worked at Suburban News as the editorial assistant in almost 14 years, but a recent visit finds nearly all the same staff as when I left – and they were almost all there prior to my 12-year tenure. They are a family. As Evelyn described it at a “not retirement lunch,” they’ve shared life together – births and deaths, heartaches, failures and triumphs. They’ve laughed and cried and argued … all with that clock ticking in the background ... deadline … deadline … deadline. It also turns out that Evelyn has a surprise talent – matchmaking. According to Walter Horylev, after he had been widowed about two years, Evelyn gave him the name and phone number of a woman and suggested Walter take her out to lunch. For “four years Jan and I have forged a beautiful relationship, one that brings me peace and joy every time we are together. Evelyn, we shall always be thankful for your intervention.” That’s Evelyn – an uncanny ability to know when the time was right for someone or something. “Evelyn was always there with freelance opportunities at the times in my life when I needed them the most,” Grace Griffee said. “Over the past few years, she even gave me the opportunity to submit photo essays, which I loved doing. I always felt that she was such an advocate for her freelancers and always looking out for us.” Adds Kristina Gabalski: “When I look back over my life at the people who have meant the most to me, Evelyn Dow is right up there near the top.” For this writer, Evelyn was extremely supportive while my mother was dying of cancer 15 years ago. I didn’t write anything for weeks; my hours editing and working at a lay-out table flew out the window. She generously gave me the time I needed and then gently pulled me back in. Boss and friend in one. A short time later, I came across something that expressed how I felt about writing and my mother: “my mother is a poem, I’ll never be able to write, although everything I write is a poem to my mother.” Thank you, Evelyn, for helping me to write poetry for my mother. Leisa Strabel

The hallmark of chiropractic treatment is the spinal adjustment, a manipulation of the individual bones - the vertebrae - that make up the spine. The purpose of the adjustment is to make sure those bones, through which the spinal cord stretches, are properly aligned. Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. That’s important because the nerves that carry information from the brain to various parts of the body emanate from the spine, and reach out between the vertebrae. A vertebra in an improper position can impair the function of the nerve and cause a problem - pain or malfunction - in the affected body part. The chiropractic term for a misaligned vertebra is subluxation. The chiropractor will determine your need for manipulation based on your description of your symptoms and on a visual inspection or by feeling your spine, a technique call palpation. In the course of the exam, the chiropractor can detect increased temperature, swelling, unusual muscle tone or muscle spasms. He or she may also use x-rays. As the chiropractor works on realigning vertebrae, there may be a “popping” sound. It’s no cause for alarm. It’s just the sound of gas escaping from a joint, just as you would hear with knuckles cracking. Talk with your chiropractor for more information about spinal adjustments.

Tammy Maier, Secretary/President
The plumbing is one of your home's most mysterious systems. The pipes are hidden in the wall, and when you have a problem, you have to call in a plumber. Plumbing repairs can be expensive, so prospective buyers are often frightened away by evidence of leaky pipes, ceiling stains below shower pans, or antiquated bathroom fixtures. If you are planning to sell your home, it is a good idea to solve your plumbing issues before you place it on the market. Take care of any cosmetic damage that leaks may have caused after the plumber has finished his work. Plumbing repairs are cost effective, and most agreements call for all systems, including the plumbing, to be in working order. If you have a problem, you will probably have to repair it before title transfer anyway, so by doing it ahead of time, you eliminate that issue. Plumbing that is in top condition will make your home appear to be well cared for and will make it more attractive to potential buyers.
