Painstaking paint job becomes multi-hued blessing by Kristina Gabalski

The original home at 41 Park Avenue in Brockport was built in 1825, but additions made around 1900 greatly expanded the home and resulted in the Victorian architecture seen today. K. Gabalski photo.

Valerie Ciciotti and Kevin McCarthy sit on the porch steps of 41 Park Avenue in Brockport with their dog, Bella. The couple owns the home and rent it to college students. Kevin spent the last four years painting the exterior, suffering a life-threatening fall in the process. Valerie picked out the color-scheme and Kevin says Bella was a faithful companion throughout the project. K. Gabalski photo.

Sometimes it takes an unexpected setback to help you appreciate how fortunate you really are. Such is the case with Kevin McCarthy of Brockport. Four years ago, the now 58-year old McCarthy nearly died following a serious fall which occurred while he was painting the exterior of a home he owns at 41 Park Avenue in the village. He was working on the east side of the house when he fell head-first from a spot near the roofline to the ground, hitting the roof of an attached garage on the way. After months of recuperation, he resolved to begin the job again the following spring. “It’s a huge undertaking to paint a house of this magnitude (more than 3,000 square feet),” McCarthy says. Returning to the job was not easy, however, he explains. “The first time back was very emotional ... I cried.” But McCarthy was determined to complete one side of the house each year until the painstaking job was finished. He soon found an unexpected source of encouragement which he says proved to be invigorating. “It has been inspiring having several passers-by greet me with great comments on how the house was progressing, helping me complete this project,” McCarthy says. “I got to meet a lot of people and got a sense of the neighborhood,” he explains of the time spent working on the exterior of the home. “It was a labor of love ... a lot of work ... and a lot of fun,” McCarthy says. The house sits at a prominent spot in the village, on the corner of State Street and Park Avenue. McCarthy says some people have even called to him from their cars at the 4-way stop to express how much they like the job. McCarthy kept a daily record of his work and totaled 647 hours of scraping, sanding, priming, painting and replace-

ment of siding. His friend, Steve Lavender, helped out by painting the high peaks using a lift truck. “My total paint usage was 53 gallons of primer and finish coats, along with 35 tubes of caulk and two gallons of window putty,” McCarthy says. His fiance, Valerie Ciciotti, helped pick out the color scheme which she says was inspired by a home the couple saw during a trip to the Thousand Islands. The siding is a light, almost teal blue and the trim is cream-colored. Yellow and deep purple are used to bring out the Victorian architectural details around windows, doors and in trim at the peaks. McCarthy and Ciciotti say they rent the home to college students and work hard to be sensitive to neighbors who live in single family homes. “We want this to not look like a rental, but an owner-occupied home,” they say. “As landlords, Val and I try to do the right thing,” McCarthy notes. “We like the college students and want to provide a comfortable place and a safe place for them to live,” Ciciotti says. Next year, McCarthy says he plans to replicate the skirting around the porches to match those from an original photo taken in the early 1900s. He will also replace railings to match the originals. With Thanksgiving and the holidays upon us, McCarthy says his accident and the painting project have taught him he has much for which to be grateful. “I’m glad I did this project as it made me appreciate all the ornate details of this beautiful turn-of-the-century Victorian,” he says. “Upon completion of this job, I could not help but reflect back on the day of my accident just over four years ago, being very grateful to be alive and healthy. As my mom once told me you will someday long to do the jobs you cannot do anymore,” McCarthy says. “I learned that lesson during my accident and recovery. Mostly, I am glad to have met many positive people that live in and around the neighborhood who greeted me daily while I worked on the job.”

PAUSING TO REFLECT To the best of our knowledge, one of the aspects of self-awareness that separates humans from other animals is that we have knowledge of our impending demise. Unlike other living things, we wonder about what happens to the dead. It is this concern that gave rise in prehistory to the sacred act of burying our dead. This fundamental obligation is much the same as it was thousands of years ago. We pause when death occurs. We ask what we can do to ease the passage. We contemplate our own end. We search for ways to comfort the living. We remember the dead. While traditions may differ, these are the questions and circumstances that

Celebrate the magic of the holidays with “Sounds of the Season” This holiday season, the Brockport College-Community Chorus’ annual concert, Sounds of the Season, will be held at the Seymour College Union Ballroom on Sunday, December 7, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $5 and will be sold at the door on the night of the concert. For more information, contact the Fine Arts Series Box Office at (585)395-2787. The program for the evening, devised by the Chorus’ music director, Brian Clickner, will have its religious aspects, but also encompasses much of the pop music that has been created through the years. “My vision for the concert was that it would be like one of those wonderful television specials from the 1960s or 70s, when the family would gather to watch, and everyone – and I mean everyone – would walk

away happy and satisfied,” says Clickner. Just as in days of yore, there are guests making special appearances throughout the evening, and – even though there will be no “bouncing ball,” made popular by Rochester’s own Mitch Miller – there will be a sing-along section of the concert. Some of the selections that will be heard that evening include “Welcome Christmas,” “I Wonder as I Wander,” “White Christmas,” and “Silent Night.” The Chorus will be accompanied by Mark DuPré. In addition, there will be a host of other musicians playing for various works through the evening, including Jonathan Allentoff on violin, Natalie Sarrazin on piano, and Mark Zale on cello. Opinion/Comments: Waste of town’s money Recently my husband and I had our small claims assessment review (SCAR) hearing to fight the assessed value of our home. Not only did the assessor come to our hearing but we were lucky enough to have the town attorney there too. Typically the town attorney does not attend SCAR hearings. According to Tim Murphy, the Director of Real Property Tax Services of Monroe County, no other town in Monroe County has their town attorney attend SCAR hearings. He stated it was a waste of a town’s money and resources. Why does Tony Eaffaldano, the Town of Sweden Assessor, need legal representation at an informal hearing? Is it a matter of competence? Is it intimidation against the homeowner? Is this how we want our tax dollars spent? Through the Freedom of Information Act I tried to find out how many times the town attorney has attended a SCAR hearing in the past five years. I was informed that the Town of Sweden does not possess or keep records on the town at-

torney. Why doesn’t the Town of Sweden keep records on what the town attorney does with his time? After all, we pay him for his services. Don’t we need to know how much to make the check out for? There are 19 towns that make up Monroe County. There are only two towns that have two assessors on their payroll, Sweden and Greece. The Sweden assessor assesses approximately 4,000 properties and Greece assesses approximately 34,000. Again I ask: Is this how we want our town representatives to spend our hard earned money? The Sweden Town Budget went $78,000 over the tax cap, which not only raised our taxes but prevented us from receiving NY State rebate money. Over the past nine years that I have lived here, I haven’t been that interested in local government. My feelings are beginning to change. I urge you to get involved, question what is going on and how the people of this town are being treated and tax dollars wasted.

The parade begins at 5 p.m. on Main Street, but all are encouraged to spend the afternoon in the village’s downtown business district Christmas shopping. “We hope people come out early and stick around,” parade organizer Brian Winant says. “We are hoping for a good turnout.” This is the fourth year of the event, Winant notes, and the parade will once again feature glittering and twinkling lighted floats, vehicles of all kinds lit up with holiday lights, marching bands and music. “It’s been four years and it’s getting stronger every year.” Winant says. “Jeremy ‘Newman’ of the WBEE Morning Coffee Club and Stacey Pensgen of WROC-TV will be serving as MC’s,” he adds.

Following the parade, the village’s tree lighting ceremony will be held in Sagawa Park and includes a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus. One portion of the event will be missing this year, Winant says. “We are unable to have fireworks because of state regulations and the lack of available space,” he explains. Winant also reminds parade-goers that there will be no parking on Main Street after 3 p.m. for safety purposes during the parade. He adds that there is still time for organizations, groups and individuals to register to participate in the parade with a float. Five hundred dollars in prize money will be awarded. Health   & Fitness Sigillo Chiropractic Neck Pain Treatment

If you suffer from neck pain, you have plenty of company. It’s a relatively common affliction. Eighteen percent of chiropractic patients say neck pain is their major issue, according to at least one estimate from the Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. And some estimates say that 15 percent of women and 10 percent of men have neck pain at any given time. A review of literature in 2007 found evidence that patients with chronic neck pain - chronic being defined as lasting eight weeks or more - reported significant improvement after chiropractic treatment, and specifically after spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation, also referred to as a spinal adjustment, is a treatment that puts the vertebrae - the individual bones that make up the spine- in alignment and restores proper alignment and nerve function. The neck is also called the cervical spine. It supports the head, which can weigh somewhere around 10 pounds, and is also the most flexible part of the spine. Although older people sometimes come to believe that constant pain is something they just have to deal with as the price of getting old, that is simply not true. If you have chronic pain in your neck - or in any other part of your body - visit a chiropractor and see what relief you may find. Presented as a community service by
