Byron-Bergen community spreads holiday cheer On December 11, 2023, volunteers from the Byron-Bergen Faculty Association (BBFA) made their list, checked it twice, and made sure everyone received something nice. These holiday helpers filled shopping carts with over $10,000 of merchandise to assist local families in need. For many years, district teachers, staff, and administrators have worked together with local partners to make the season merrier in the Byron-Bergen area. The annual Holiday Giving Project aims to ease holiday stress for members of the Byron-Bergen community. This year, the BBFA collected donations from faculty, staff, and individual community members to purchase gifts for 99 kids from 43 local families. Community groups also “adopted” families, raising the total reach to 117 kids from 51 local families. “The Holiday Giving Project really is a community effort,” said ByronBergen Faculty Association President Ken Gropp. “We are so glad that this yearly endeavor can brighten the holiday season for our students and community.”

The hard work of the BBFA did not go without the notice of Superintendent Pat McGee. “I am so thankful our district prioritizes the support of students and families. It was my pleasure to work with our Board of Education to create a formal resolution showing our appreciation for the outstanding dedication of the BBFA.” At the opening of the Jr. High School Winter Concert on December 14, McGee and the members of the Byron-Bergen Board of Education honored several BBFA members with the following resolution: WHEREAS, the Byron-Bergen Central School District’s mission is to inspire, prepare, and support using the values of compassion, humility, kindness, and persistence with the vision to change the world one student at a time; and WHEREAS, the Byron-Bergen Faculty Association Holiday Fund helps individuals and families in our community in need; and

WHEREAS, Byron-Bergen Faculty Association Members, Kerri Smith, Ashley Williams, Kristie Holler, Jenna Voos, Courney Bapst, Alyssa Hancock, Megan Wahl, Ken Gropp, Diana Walther, Nichole Whiteford, and Sandy Auer volunteer their time to lead this important endeavor to help those families in need; WHEREAS, your dedication, passion, generosity, and unwavering commitment have truly made a significant impact on these families and our community; and WHEREAS, your collective efforts have not only brought joy and cheer but have also fostered a sense of togetherness and hope during the holiday season, and WHEREAS, your selflessness and willingness to contribute have touched the lives of many, spreading warmth and happiness where it’s needed the most, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education sincerely appreciates the hard work of the Byron-Bergen Faculty Association Holiday Fund volunteers and all who donated to this special cause for their generosity and hard

The members of the BBFA in attendance joined the Board of Education and Superintendent McGee for a round of applause from the community they serve. After five days of shopping, wrapping, organizing, and labeling, BBFA members delivered bags filled with brightly wrapped and labeled presents to individual cars in the High School bus loop. And next year, they will do it all again. Provided information

For the first time, jazz pianist Parker Story will collaborate with St. Luke’s singers in “A Very Jazzy January” on Saturday, January 6, at 7 p.m. The free event promises exciting collaborations, new discoveries, and old favorites. Parker Story, a Rochester native, will kick off the evening with a solo set that includes jazz songs such as Milt Jackson’s “Bag’s Groove,” Rodgers/Hart’s “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” and Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” Guitarist and vocalist Rudy Dean, Jr., will sing an original tune, “Dream Away My Blues,” alongside classics like Johnny Mercer’s “Dream” and The Beatles’ “And I Love Her.” Collaborating with Jess Moss and Ben Monacelli, Dean will offer beloved standards such as Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Last but not least, St. Luke’s Schola Cantorum will join Parker Story in a set of jazz classics for small choir, creating a unique fusion of instrumental and vocal artistry. Parker Story, a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan University, studied piano with Professor Joe Werner and Professor Emeritus Dr. Michael Landrum, and jazz improvisation with Michael Van Allen. Tenor Ben Monacelli studied voice at Ithaca College, graduating with a degree in vocal jazz studies in 2020. Since then, he has performed as a soloist with the

She holds a M.M. in Vocal Performance from Peabody Conservatory and a B.S. in Music Performance from Roberts Wesleyan University in Voice as a student of Constance Fee. Moss maintains a thriving voice studio and teaches piano as well. Rudy Dean Jr. is a solo guitar instrumentalist and vocalist specializing in vintage jazz. His full-length performances include soft rock, country and bluegrass. He is a native of Manhattan, and has lived and

played in Florida, Arizona, California and Oregon. He now resides in Brockport. This concert is made possible through a generous grant from the Brockport Arts Fund of the Rochester Community Foundation. NYS Parks Centennial Challenge 2024 marks New York State Parks Centennial, and with it, lots of reasons to celebrate. As you head out on your next adventure to a New York State park or historic site, you are invited to take on the Centennial Challenge. New York State Parks has come up with a list of 100 activities to give you a chance to get outdoors and discover state parks, to learn more about New York State history at historic sites, and to give back to preserve all of its properties for the next generation. Not sure you can complete all 100 activities in a year? That’s okay. The goal is to complete 24, after which you’ll earn a commemorative Centennial prize, as well as an entry into a random drawing for one of 24 threeyear Empire Passes and a Centennial swag bag. Take the Challenge on the go by downloading the Goosechase app from either the iPhone or Android app store. Create an account then search for “NY State Parks Centennial Challenge” to join and start collecting points. Prefer the tried-and-true method of

pen and paper to track your Centennial Challenge progress? Download the checklist at https://parks.ny.gov/ documents/100/OPRHPCentennialChallengeChecklist.pdf or pick one up at your local state park or historic site. Once you’ve earned as many points as you can, mail in your checklist to New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, 625 Broadway, Albany, N.Y. 12207, Attn: Centennial Challenge. Remember, you only need to complete 24 activities in order to collect 24 points and earn your Centennial prize and entry into the promotional giveaway. Those who earn more than 24 points will receive one extra entry into the promotional giveaway for every extra ten points earned. Submissions will be accepted from January 1, 2024, to January 10, 2025. Winners of the promotional giveaway will be announced the week of January 13, 2025. GCV&M announces big plans for the total solar eclipse on April 8 Genesee Country Village & Museum, in Mumford, has announced plans for four days of festivities (April 5 through 8) leading up to and including the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, when the living history museum is in the path of totality. The largest museum of its kind in New York State, GCV&M will offer a number of once-in-a-century experiences for the total solar eclipse centered around how Americans historically experienced and interpreted eclipses and astronomical happenings. Explore 19th-century citizen science hands-on, attend a magic lantern show, learn about women in the sciences, pose for a souvenir tin-type photo, taste eclipse-themed historical treats from the Confectionery, interact with costumed historical educators, see how farm animals react to totality, and delve into religious fervor of the 19th century. Plus, enjoy eclipse-themed food and drink, shop one-of-a-kind merchandise in the Flint Hill Store, enjoy live music and entertainment, and so much more. GCV&M encourages everyone to think about where they will experience this solar spectacle and consider the museum as a truly unique venue – the next chance to see a total solar eclipse in Rochester will be in 2144. Genesee Country Village & Museum will offer a number of unique spaces in which to view the total solar eclipse on April 8 – each with a designated wide-open viewing area for totality. Visitors are invited to step outside of the hustle and bustle of cities like Rochester and Buffalo and enjoy a festival-like atmosphere without the crowds or light pollution big cities will see during this weekend of high-traffic tourism. The event guarantees free, non-competitive parking, designated viewing areas with an un-obstructed sightline to totality, fascinating hands-on historical programming in the 19thcentury Village, Gallery, and Nature Center, and more. Less than 2,000 individuals (spread out over hundreds of acres)

will have the opportunity to attend the Solar Spectacle. All tickets will also include access to programming in the Historic Village, John L. Wehle Gallery, and Nature Center, as well as safe eclipse viewing glasses. Book a Historic Village Experience Guests will have the option to choose from renting a historical building in the Village for the day for an affordable bulk rate. Groups can reserve buildings of their choice and secure a private place to relax and celebrate throughout the day – enjoy included food and drink, and stay warm beside a historic hearth. In addition to food and drink and access to programming, Historic Village packages include an eclipse swag bag, and access to an eclipse after-party. To book a historic building, contact eclipse2024@gcv.org. Book a Hospitality Experience Hospitality locations including the museum’s historic Carriage Barn, Exhibition Barn, and Meeting Center Lounge. In addition to food, drink, and historical programming, these experiences provide access to amenities and cozy furnishings in convenient locations. Guests who book the Meeting Center

Hospitality Experience will also receive an eclipse swag bag and access to an exclusive Eclipse After Party. Book a Drive-In/Tailgating Experience The museum offers its Drive-In/Tailgating option, in which visitors can pay per-car to park in the perfect viewing spot that is the wide-open South Field. Drive-in/Tailgating guests are encouraged to bring as many friends and family as they like per-car for a flat rate, will have access to campus-wide programming and restaurant/bar locations, and will receive eclipse viewing glasses. Three-Day Festival (April 5 to 7) Visitors to GCV&M April 5 to 7 will find a full weekend of historical happenings leading up to the main event on Monday, April 8. The museum will be open for explorations in the 19th-century Historic Village, magic lantern shows and celestial programming in the John L. Wehle Gallery, hands-on citizen science activities, costumed historical educators sharing how 19th-century Americans experienced and recorded astronomical happenings, and more. Tickets for the festival will become available in the coming months at https://www. gcv.org/events/. Support for this event is provided by a Market New York grant from I LOVE NY/ New York State’s Division of Tourism through the Regional Economic Development Council initiative. Learn more about the Solar Spectacle at GCV&M and purchase tickets now at https://www.gcv.org/event/2024total-eclipse-at-gcvm/. Provided information and photo

Local historian teaches third graders about The Underground Railroad On December 19, David Crumb, historian for the Village of Hilton and Town of Parma, visited Michael Heise’s third grade class at Village Elementary School in Hilton for a presentation on The Underground Railroad and its local ties to Hilton. Mr. Crumb answered general questions about the Underground Railroad, then talked about the some of the “safe houses” found along the 104 corridor and their importance due to the proximity to Canada. Mr. Crumb was accompanied by his grandson, Joe Walsh, a fourth grader in Brighton, who read the class information about William Still, an African American abolitionist based

in Pennsylvania, and a conductor of the Underground Railroad responsible for aiding and assisting at least 649 slaves to freedom towards the North. Mr. Crumb also gave students each a laminated article about the historical marker recently placed at the north end of Route 259 in Parma. The marker recognizes the spot where Walter Vond, the son of Hilton’s first African American family, helped slaves escape to Canada during the 1850s. Mr. Crumb encouraged the students to visit the marker with their families. Provided information and photo
