New Ogden Chief of Police to be sworn-in June 10 by Kristina Gabalski Sergeant Christopher Mears will be sworn-in during the Ogden Town Board meeting Wednesday, June 10. Mears is a 20-year veteran of the Police Department and will replace Chief Douglas Nordquist who served in the position for 11 years and with the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office for 30 years. “I’m stepping into the biggest of shoes,” Sergeant Mears says, “Chief Nordquist did a phenomenal job developing the culture at the police department. He’s a hard person to follow.” Sergeant Mears says Chief Nordquist brought everyone in the department together and also brought the department together with the community and with other departments in the town. “It’s hard to think about going into work and him not being there,” Sergeant Mears says. “I’m really excited to get started, but I will really miss Chief Nordquist.” Sergeant Mears has spent most of his 20 years - 17 to be exact - working on the night shift and also served as a K-9 officer for a couple of years, he says. In 2009, he attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, for ten weeks. “It was one of the highlights of my career so far,” Sergeant Mears says. The professional development course included training in areas such as leadership, communications, forensic science and even behavioral science.

You’re invited to Hamlin’s Wheel Fest June 6.

Chief Nordquist has been working with Sergeant Mears to prepare him to step into the roll of chief. “He has made me as ready as I can be,” Sergeant Mears says. “I will be modeling Chief Nordquist’s behavior. He’s gotten me ready and I’m really excited to get in there.” Ogden Town Supervisor Gay Lenhard says she is confident the community will be very receptive to Mears’ leadership and community involvement. “I’m very excited about working with our new chief, Chris Mears,” Supervisor Lenhard says. “I have known him for the past 20 years and am impressed with his devotion to our community. I know that he is anxious to have the opportunity to interact with our residents and business owners.” Sergeant Mears says he has lived in the village the entire time he has worked for the department and he and his family feel very much a part of the community. “I feel it’s an asset, I really do,” he observes about knowing the people he serves both professionally and personally. “It’s a big help, you see people as people. If you know a person’s background you can be more fair.” He notes that Ogden/Spencerport community is known for the cooperation between both town and village governments as well as the community’s emergency services. “You would be hard-pressed to find two municipalities that work so well together,” he says. He adds that he doesn’t plan any major changes to the department. “The ship is sailing very well now,” he

He foresees officers with body-worn cameras, for example. “Video taping of police is a benefit to both sides,” Sergeant Mears says. “It encourages law enforcement to act more reasonably.” He says the police department will continue to keep close ties to the community with officers visible outside of patrol cars, walking the village and at various events. “When they get out of their cars and talk to people, everybody benefits,” Sergeant Mears says.

Families and music lovers are encouraged to come for the fun and stay for the food: the Lions Club Chicken Barbecue. IRREVOCABLE FUNERAL TRUST While the widow(er) of anyone who qualified for Social Security benefits is entitled to a one-time lump “Death Benefit” of $255 to help pay for his or her spouse’s funeral or burial costs, Medicaid does not make an outright payment of this sort. Instead, Medicaid has rules that allow recipients to set aside money for their own funerals and burials without having that money count as part of the assets that Medicaid uses to determine eligibility for medical or long-term care. Aside from not being counted as an asset by Medicaid, an “irrevocable funeral trust” enables families to prepay for the cost in advance of an

expensive item, which they or their family will have to pay for eventually. A funeral trust allows a family to plan for a funeral without having to plan the details of the funeral. However, should a family think differently regarding funeral planning, there is nothing in a funeral trust that would prevent them from planning the details. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585392-7100. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Dear Kendall Community, After 26 years of serving the residents of Kendall as Recreation Director, I am at this time submitting my resignation. This has not been an easy decision for me, because it has been an extreme pleasure watching and helping the town and its residents grow. I’ve seen the youth of this community grow from toddlers standing at the T-ball plate for the first time into those adults who are now stepping up to coach their own children at that same plate.

Throughout the years I have been grateful to have the backing and support of the community and its governing body in helping me build and tailor the recreational programs to the needs and wants they have expressed. In a small part, this department has helped participants learn and hone their athletic skills and witnessed how they have carried these skills into the school sports arena with great success. I am proud of the accomplishments we have achieved over the years and I look forward to supporting the continued efforts of this department. Barbara Flow Town of Kendall Recreation Director

A little Wheel Fest Cruise-In history The first event was born on June 13, 1998. It was a spin off of the Hamlin Community Days, which ended a few years prior. The Wheel Fest is a not for profit organization with all fees or donations used to cover cruise-in expenses. Any left over funds are donated to Hamlin’s many civic groups. This year, the funds are designated to the Hamlin VFW Post #6703 to help purchase a gazebo. The first year was a small event. The Cruise-In had 12 vehicles in attendance. Since then it has increased to a consistent event with 160 to 200 vehicles annually. The vehicles are very diverse in nature. Past events have included: motorcycles, restored tractors, drag cars, Sprint Cup stock car, go-karts, snowmobiles, hot rods, classics, antiques, low riders, monster trucks, daily drivers, trailer queens and others. The event attracts approximately 3,000 to 4,000 spectators throughout the day. In 2006, the WNY Antique Boat and Motor Club became a regular display. They have participants come from as far away as Syracuse. The old boats and motors are a great addition to the cruise. Sponsors come from near and far: New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio. Many have been participants for over 15 years. In 2007, a 28’ travel trailer donated to the “Cruise Crew” was transformed into a combo-registration center, bandstand, parade float, rolling billboard and command station. Every Cruise-In starts off with the singing of the National Anthem, with local Girl, Boy and Cub Scouts providing Flag Honor Guards. The event is wrapped up about four hours later with the awards ceremony. Traditionally, 14 awards are earned by participants.

In 2004, Wheel Fest Cruise-In was picked as one of the best Cruise-Ins in the nation by Hemming’s Motor News. To keep things fresh, the cruise crew is always looking for new ideas and items to enhance the event. Some things we have had over the years are: vehicle-related vendors, new car displays, vintage pedal car, kid’s bicycle show, local police and State Police displays. 2015 marks the 18th year of the CruiseIn. This year the event will be held at the Hamlin Fire Department field near the Fire Hall. A “Special Thanks” to the Hamlin Fire Department for the use of their facilities. As usual, the Cruise-In is held in conjunction with the Hamlin Wheel Fest Festival which runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on June 6. There are many things to entertain the young and the not so young. Among them are: Silent Auctions, School Bands, Kid’s Corner, Musical Entertainment on the Main Stage, Crafters, “I Got It” game, Horseshoe Tournament, lots of food vendors and displays. A gigantic fireworks display caps off the day. For information call Gary 964-2935 or Kathi 964-2421. Food booths are $60, Craft Booths are $50 and Cruise-In spots are $5. Provided information

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - May 31, 2015 11 John F. Ward left his earthly life of 87 years to go home with our Lord in heaven on Thursday, May 7, 2015 after a long battle with cancer to wait for his loving wife, Vivian of 60 years to join him in the future. His daughter Bonnie (Tim) Kreutter of Geneseo, son Bernard Ward of Holley, grandchildren, Stephanie (Gary) Pritchard of Kenmore, Alex (Taylor) Kreutter of W. Henrietta, and Amber Callen-Ward of Holley, were very dear and precious to him. John was predeceased by his parents, Huron and Caroline Ward, brothers, Clifford, Elmer and Wade “Bud” Ward, sisters, Viola DeLaura, Nancy Karpenko Saxton and Ona Mignano. He is survived by his sister, Beulah Ward and sisterin-law Dorothy Ward. Holley has been John’s home all his life and special thanks go to his neighbors, the Dabney’s and the Ryan’s for their support and help throughout his illness, as well as Dr. Hussain and his nurse, Mary Jo Mele. John was happiest when he could be outdoors in the warmth and sunshine whether it was gardening, caring for the lawn and flowerbeds or just “puttering” in the barn. His creativity was put to good use in caring for his family, his home and the land around it. When not busy at home, out came the golf clubs to enjoy. Golf was his favorite past time. For 23 years, he and his wife spent their winters in Florida where they owned a home in Outdoor Resorts of Orlando; where golfing was his “joy” along with playing cards with his Florida friends. John had served in United States Army and was a current member of the American Legion, Disciples United Methodist Church and in the Seniors Golf League at Hickory Ridge. Calling hours were Tuesday May 12th, from 4:30 PM to 7 PM at the Disciples United Methodist Church on Holley-Byron Rd. (Rt. 237) in Clarendon, NY, where a funeral service was held at 7:00 PM with the Pastor, Rev. Jack Laskowski officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s name to: Hospice of Orleans County, P.O. Box# 489, Albion, NY 14411. Or to: the Disciples United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Hayward Dream Line

It’s not always a sudden trauma like a fall, a car accident or a sports injury that can lead to pain. An injury can develop over time as a result of seemingly innocuous activity, like sitting for long hours at a computer keyboard, swinging a tennis racquet or operating a maDr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. chine on the job. Any motion that you repeat continuously makes you a candidate for what’s called repetitive stress injury. The repetitive motion, particularly if you’re doing it improperly, can cause strain, inflammation and pain. A chiropractor can help if you find yourself in this situation. A chiropractor is trained in the function and structure of joints. He or she may treat your injury with manipulation, ultrasound or one of the other techniques chiropractors have at their disposal. The chiropractor may recommend a regimen of exercises to loosen and/or strength the troublesome area, and he or she can show you how to move the troubled joint. Depending on the specifics of the case, the chiropractor may refer you to a physical therapist for a complete retraining program. When dealing with a repetitive stress injury, the chiropractor can advise you how you can move forward and address the cause of the problem. The advice may be as simple as taking more frequent breaks. Talk with a chiropractor about repetitive stress and other types of injury.
