New Ogden Chief of Police to be sworn-in June 10 by Kristina Gabalski Sergeant Christopher Mears will be sworn-in during the Ogden Town Board meeting Wednesday, June 10. Mears is a 20-year veteran of the Police Department and will replace Chief Douglas Nordquist who served in the position for 11 years and with the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office for 30 years. “I’m stepping into the biggest of shoes,” Sergeant Mears says, “Chief Nordquist did a phenomenal job developing the culture at the police department. He’s a hard person to follow.” Sergeant Mears says Chief Nordquist brought everyone in the department together and also brought the department together with the community and with other departments in the town. “It’s hard to think about going into work and him not being there,” Sergeant Mears says. “I’m really excited to get started, but I will really miss Chief Nordquist.” Sergeant Mears has spent most of his 20 years - 17 to be exact - working on the night shift and also served as a K-9 officer for a couple of years, he says. In 2009, he attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, for ten weeks. “It was one of the highlights of my career so far,” Sergeant Mears says. The professional development course included training in areas such as leadership, communications, forensic science and even behavioral science.
You’re invited to Hamlin’s Wheel Fest June 6.

Chief Nordquist has been working with Sergeant Mears to prepare him to step into the roll of chief. “He has made me as ready as I can be,” Sergeant Mears says. “I will be modeling Chief Nordquist’s behavior. He’s gotten me ready and I’m really excited to get in there.” Ogden Town Supervisor Gay Lenhard says she is confident the community will be very receptive to Mears’ leadership and community involvement. “I’m very excited about working with our new chief, Chris Mears,” Supervisor Lenhard says. “I have known him for the past 20 years and am impressed with his devotion to our community. I know that he is anxious to have the opportunity to interact with our residents and business owners.” Sergeant Mears says he has lived in the village the entire time he has worked for the department and he and his family feel very much a part of the community. “I feel it’s an asset, I really do,” he observes about knowing the people he serves both professionally and personally. “It’s a big help, you see people as people. If you know a person’s background you can be more fair.” He notes that Ogden/Spencerport community is known for the cooperation between both town and village governments as well as the community’s emergency services. “You would be hard-pressed to find two municipalities that work so well together,” he says. He adds that he doesn’t plan any major changes to the department. “The ship is sailing very well now,” he

He foresees officers with body-worn cameras, for example. “Video taping of police is a benefit to both sides,” Sergeant Mears says. “It encourages law enforcement to act more reasonably.” He says the police department will continue to keep close ties to the community with officers visible outside of patrol cars, walking the village and at various events. “When they get out of their cars and talk to people, everybody benefits,” Sergeant Mears says.
C-C Music Booster Club and supported by the Lions Club, is regularly attended by over 1,000 festival goers. Families and music lovers are encouraged to come for the fun and stay for the food: the Lions Club Chicken Barbecue. BECOMING A PERSON OF INFLUENCE Have you considered what it means to be a person of influence for Christ in the world in which we live? During these summer months we will be examining how we can grow as leaders for Christ and expand our influence in our community and the world. We will be listening to and discussing ideas shared from the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit. Speakers like Henry Cloud, Jim Collins, Carly Fiorina, Bill Hybels and others will help us grow that we might serve others.

Various community groups proactive on bridge repair needs by Kristina Gabalski With work on the Union Street/Route 259 lift bridge over the Erie Canal in the Village of Spencerport looming on the horizon - possibly in 2016 - local leaders are hopeful work can be done on another span in the town so that it will be up to par when the Route 259 bridge cannot be used. The Gillett Road bridge over the Erie Canal is posted for 8 tons, meaning large trucks and vehicles like school buses cannot use it to cross the canal. Spencerport Fire Chief Doug Case says local leaders are worried about what will happen when the Route 259 bridge is repaired, if the Gillett Road bridge still has the 8 ton limit. He says Town Supervisor Gay Lenhard wrote a letter to the NYS Department of Transportation in February, expressing concern over the situation. The DOT responded that the letter is on file and that officials understand the concerns of local leaders, but there has been no word on when work might take place, Case explains. Chief Case says the school district, fire department, village and town are
together in their desire to be pro-active regarding the situation, but as of yet, have not been able to make a unified effort simply because, “... it is hard getting the time to try and push the DOT, so they understand where we are coming from. We are all on the same page,” he says of community leaders and their concern over the need for infrastructure upgrades. Lori Maher of the New York State DOT Regional Office tells the Suburban News/The Herald: “We are analyzing the structure to come up with a design that will increase the current 8 ton posting while considering service life, posted weight limits, travel impacts during construction and overall expense,” she says regarding the Gillett Road bridge. “Once we make a decision, we will finish the design plans and either have a contractor or our bridge maintenance shop perform the repairs. We also have to coordinate with the Canal Corp. to occupy the waterway during the summer months.” Maher says when more details are available, the DOT will make an announcement. The Spencerport Fire Department and school

buses can use the Route 259 bridge in the village, although the weight limit on that span was reduced to 12 tons late last year. At that time, Chief Case noted, “there are seven bridges across the canal in the (fire) district and only two or three have (weight) levels we can use.” The Martha Street bridge is posted for 18 tons. School district officials also told the Suburban News/The Herald earlier this year that if improvements are not made to the Gillett Road bridge and the Route 259 bridge also cannot be used, it could cause significant strain to the district’s transportation system.

Merton Williams Middle School students welcome “Grandfriends” Each spring Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton hosts a Grandfriends Breakfast in the school’s cafeteria for interested senior citizens in the district. Food is provided by Hilton CSD Food Service and is served by Student Ambassadors, Student Council members and National Junior Honor Society members. Grandfriends also enjoy displays of student work and music by the school’s performing groups. On the placemats, students illustrated the traits of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Learner Profile, such as open minded, reflective, caring and principled. “We want our students to develop all of these capabilities and for them to become the everyday language of students and staff,” said Principal Tim Dobbertin. Student performers were credited for displaying at least two of the traits - risk taking by performing in front of their peers and an audience, and being communicators by creating the universal language of music. Dobbertin thanked the cafeteria staff; Claudia Engel and Carolyn Grief, school secretaries; and all of the students who helped to make the event possible. Kaitlyn Johnson’s grandmother, Patricia Johnson, said she was impressed by how social the students are and ap-

Rangers host “LaxFest” to support Golisano Children’s Hospital The Spencerport Rangers Girls and Boys lacrosse programs held the 6th Annual Spencerport LaxFest on Saturday, May 9. The program worked with the “More Than a Game Foundation” where each team raised pledges in the name of Alex Turnquist. Alex was a Spencerport student-athlete who lost his battle with cancer in February 2015. The “LaxFest” event included all Spencerport Youth Lacrosse teams playing a game on the campus as well as being introduced at halftime during the varsity game. This year, the lacrosse program donated $3,331.25 to the Golisano Children’s Hospital through this event. Tim Britton, Spencerport Boys Varsity LaCrosse Coach said, “The Spencerport LaxFest is a day that brings together all Spencerport lacrosse teams, boys & girls, kindergarten through 12th grade. Our entire lacrosse community sprawls
the district campus to celebrate our love for the game, raise money and bring awareness to the fight against cancer. It has been a huge success for everyone involved in planning and coordinating a great day of fundraising and lacrosse. We’re very proud to support the Golisano Children’s Hospital and the More Than a Game Foundation.” Patricia Condon, Spencerport Girls Varsity Lacrosse coach said, “The best thing about LaxFest is the positive playing environment that is created by the teams and the community. The event allows players, youth through varsity, to enjoy the game of lacrosse played at all levels and support the continued growth of the sport. Playing the day for Alex made it even more special.” Provided information
Riga and Churchville board members discuss mutual community issues by Kristina Gabalski Members of the Riga Town Board and Churchville Village Board discussed some creative ways to assist the Churchville Fire Department in paying down the mortgage on the firehouse during their joint meeting held Monday, May 18 at the Riga Town Hall. Churchville Mayor Nancy Steedman said the village will soon be meeting with the Fire Department to discuss the budget and members of the Village Board have been, “brainstorming ideas to help reduce the cost of the mortgage payment.” She asked Riga Supervisor Bob Ottley if there was any way to use “landfill dollars” - revenue from the Mill Seat Landfill Host Community Benefit Agreement - to help with the mortgage. “Debt service is only allowed in water improvement benefit areas and water districts. Debt service is not included for drainage or the Fire Department,” Ottley said. He explained that the only option would be to expend Host Community Benefit revenue on improvements to the Fire Department, such as purchasing new equipment. Supervisor Ottley said the town investigated the pos-
sibility of tapping into a $5 million reserve fund which earns about one percent interest to buy the mortgage, but, cannot do that, the town learned, because it is not considered a sound place to make an investment. If the town tapped into landfill funds to cover future Fire Department equipment purchases, board members suggested money the Fire Department currently has set aside for equipment could be used instead to help pay down the mortgage. Supervisor Ottley warned that such a proposal would be subject to permissive referendum and that in addition to the Churchville Fire Department, the Town of Riga contracts with Bergen and Clifton Fire Departments for fire protection. “The two other fire departments would pay real close attention” to the town providing funds for equipment purchases to the Churchville Fire Department through Host Community Benefit revenue, he said. Mayor Nancy Steedman reported that the village has set aside about $78,000 from the sale of the former firehouse and will likely use those funds for assisting the Fire Department with expenses, perhaps with the mortgage.

A little Wheel Fest Cruise-In history The first event was born on June 13, 1998. It was a spin off of the Hamlin Community Days, which ended a few years prior. The Wheel Fest is a not for profit organization with all fees or donations used to cover cruise-in expenses. Any left over funds are donated to Hamlin’s many civic groups. This year, the funds are designated to the Hamlin VFW Post #6703 to help purchase a gazebo. The first year was a small event. The Cruise-In had 12 vehicles in attendance. Since then it has increased to a consistent event with 160 to 200 vehicles annually. The vehicles are very diverse in nature. Past events have included: motorcycles, restored tractors, drag cars, Sprint Cup stock car, go-karts, snowmobiles, hot rods, classics, antiques, low riders, monster trucks, daily drivers, trailer queens and others. The event attracts approximately 3,000 to 4,000 spectators throughout the day. In 2006, the WNY Antique Boat and Motor Club became a regular display. They have participants come from as far away as Syracuse. The old boats and motors are a great addition to the cruise. Sponsors come from near and far: New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio. Many have been participants for over 15 years. In 2007, a 28’ travel trailer donated to the “Cruise Crew” was transformed into a combo-registration center, bandstand, parade float, rolling billboard and command station. Every Cruise-In starts off with the singing of the National Anthem, with local Girl, Boy and Cub Scouts providing Flag Honor Guards. The event is wrapped up about four hours later with the awards ceremony. Traditionally, 14 awards are earned by participants.
In 2004, Wheel Fest Cruise-In was picked as one of the best Cruise-Ins in the nation by Hemming’s Motor News. To keep things fresh, the cruise crew is always looking for new ideas and items to enhance the event. Some things we have had over the years are: vehicle-related vendors, new car displays, vintage pedal car, kid’s bicycle show, local police and State Police displays. 2015 marks the 18th year of the CruiseIn. This year the event will be held at the Hamlin Fire Department field near the Fire Hall. A “Special Thanks” to the Hamlin Fire Department for the use of their facilities. As usual, the Cruise-In is held in conjunction with the Hamlin Wheel Fest Festival which runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on June 6. There are many things to entertain the young and the not so young. Among them are: Silent Auctions, School Bands, Kid’s Corner, Musical Entertainment on the Main Stage, Crafters, “I Got It” game, Horseshoe Tournament, lots of food vendors and displays. A gigantic fireworks display caps off the day. For information call Gary 964-2935 or Kathi 964-2421. Food booths are $60, Craft Booths are $50 and Cruise-In spots are $5. Provided information

their lead to 5-0. Brandon Bourg took second on an error and went to third on a bunt single by Justin Resseguie. Metzger walked to again load the bases before Hendry laced a single to left scoring two. He came across on a sacrifice fly by Turpyn. Fairport countered with single runs in the fourth and sixth, but the Cadets scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Resseguie and Metzger singled with the former later taking third on a flyout. Metzger then took off for second on a delayed steal with Resseguie breaking for home at the perfect time on the throw to second and scored. Catcher Dom Palma had an RBI single and Turpyn his RBI double to make it 8-2 Cadets. Fairport plated one run in the seventh off starting pitcher John Chiappone, but Metzger came on to record the final out on two pitches on a foul-out. Chiappone allowed seven hits and struck out three in throwing 101 pitches over 6.2 innings of work to earn the victory. The third-seeded Cadets had their season ended with a 10-3 loss to number-two seed McQuaid in the semifinals completing the high school careers of Metzger, Lucas LaJuett, Hendry, Bourg and Matt Butts.

John F. Ward left his earthly life of 87 years to go home with our Lord in heaven on Thursday, May 7, 2015 after a long battle with cancer to wait for his loving wife, Vivian of 60 years to join him in the future. His daughter Bonnie (Tim) Kreutter of Geneseo, son Bernard Ward of Holley, grandchildren, Stephanie (Gary) Pritchard of Kenmore, Alex (Taylor) Kreutter of W. Henrietta, and Amber Callen-Ward of Holley, were very dear and precious to him. John was predeceased by his parents, Huron and Caroline Ward, brothers, Clifford, Elmer and Wade “Bud” Ward, sisters, Viola DeLaura, Nancy Karpenko Saxton and Ona Mignano. He is survived by his sister, Beulah Ward and sisterin-law Dorothy Ward. Holley has been John’s home all his life and special thanks go to his neighbors, the Dabney’s and the Ryan’s for their support and help throughout his illness, as well as Dr. Hussain and his nurse, Mary Jo Mele. John was happiest when he could be outdoors in the warmth and sunshine whether it was gardening, caring for the lawn and flowerbeds or just “puttering” in the barn. His creativity was put to good use in caring for his family, his home and the land around it. When not busy at home, out came the golf clubs to enjoy. Golf was his favorite past time. For 23 years, he and his wife spent their winters in Florida where they owned a home in Outdoor Resorts of Orlando; where golfing was his “joy” along with playing cards with his Florida friends. John had served in United States Army and was a current member of the American Legion, Disciples United Methodist Church and in the Seniors Golf League at Hickory Ridge. Calling hours were Tuesday May 12th, from 4:30 PM to 7 PM at the Disciples United Methodist Church on Holley-Byron Rd. (Rt. 237) in Clarendon, NY, where a funeral service was held at 7:00 PM with the Pastor, Rev. Jack Laskowski officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s name to: Hospice of Orleans County, P.O. Box# 489, Albion, NY 14411. Or to: the Disciples United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. FUNERAL HOME Family Owned & Operated RONALD JOHN ARNDT SHARI L. ARNDT
by Thomas E. Burger and Douglas G. Sholette
IRREVOCABLE FUNERAL TRUST While the widow(er) of anyone who qualified for Social Security benefits is entitled to a one-time lump “Death Benefit” of $255 to help pay for his or her spouse’s funeral or burial costs, Medicaid does not make an outright payment of this sort. Instead, Medicaid has rules that allow recipients to set aside money for their own funerals and burials without having that money count as part of the assets that Medicaid uses to determine eligibility for medical or long-term care. Aside from not being counted as an asset by Medicaid, an “irrevocable funeral trust” enables families to prepay for the cost in advance of an
expensive item, which they or their family will have to pay for eventually. A funeral trust allows a family to plan for a funeral without having to plan the details of the funeral. However, should a family think differently regarding funeral planning, there is nothing in a funeral trust that would prevent them from planning the details. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585392-7100. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

The 2015 Hilton Central School District Friends of Education are: (l-r) Christine Gizzi, Ron Bourret, Steve DeLucia, Tony Caraglio, The Old Cruzers - Doc Wiggins, Ron Sears, Todd Greenville, Joe Wiggins and Mark Paradies, Karen Reynolds and Joan Potter. Not shown, George Kaufman. Provided photo.
Hilton BOE recognizes Friends of Education Every school year the Hilton Board of Education honors individuals and organizations in the Hilton school community who have contributed to the education of Hilton students through volunteering or other efforts. This year’s Friends of Education were recognized at the May 12 board meeting.
HFL ends Rangers LAX season by Warren Kozireski Honeoye-Falls/Lima jumped out to a 10-0 first half lead and survived an early second half Rangers rally to win 20-4 in the 8-9 game of the first round of the Class B boys lacrosse Section V playoffs. HFL built their 10-0 lead on laser-like shooting from in close and with distance shots over the first 23 minutes of lay before the Rangers could get on the scoreboard. With just 1:08 remaining in the first half, junior Andrew Forte, who dominated throughout the game on draws, charged toward the Cougar net after winning another draw and scored the first Spencerport goal. The Rangers opened the second half on an offensive mission as they took advantage of several Cougar penalties. Matt Schumann converted on consecutive passes from Colin McElligott while two and one man up respectively in the first minute of the third quarter to pull the Rangers to 10-3. After an HFL tally, Jonathan Agness converted another man-up opportunity to get the Rangers to within seven goals with over 20 minutes remaining. But a pair of giveaways in the defensive zone on attempted passes by the goalie allowed the Cougars to score two easy goals as part of their 9-0 run to end the contest. Spencerport senior starters Michael Yaeger and Trevor Dustin along with Schumann, Reese Inclima, Lucas Basil and Jacob Stephens all completed their high school lacrosse careers.
Hilton High School Principal Brian Bartalo recognized parents Ron Bourret and Steve DeLucia for their work with the Drama Club. “Ron and Steve have each volunteered over 50 hours of their personal time to design and build sets,” said Bartalo. This year’s production of “The Spell of Sleeping Beauty” featured especially elaborate sets, which were made possible in large part by Bourret and DeLucia. Representing the Music Department, Chairperson Nancy Russo presented the award to Jim Whittemore, parent, for volunteering countless hours to the Hilton music program. Over the past six years, he had designed, built, painted and coordinated sets for both the High School musicals and Drama Club. “His willingness to help and his positive rapport with all of the district’s music staff is unparalleled,” said Russo. Athletic Director Michael Giruzzi recognized Tony Caraglio of Caraglio’s Pizza for going out of his way as a Hilton business to give back to the school, community and athletic program. Caraglio’s was the first sponsor of the Cadet Crew student fan group, sponsored a halftime challenge and the Corporate Challenge, provided food for Captains’ Lunches and employs Hilton students. Merton Williams Middle School Principal Tim Dobbertin presented the award to Christine Gizzi, a parent and volunteer who regularly supervises the Student of the Month room where students can go during lunch to play games and socialize. She is also an invaluable volunteer during team spirit days and other special events, and often donates food items for the events. “Her joyful attitude is infectious to be around and we always enjoy having her here,” said Dobbertin.

Northwood Elementary School Principal Kirk Ashton recognized volunteer Joan Potter for her work with the library programs and kindergarteners. Potter reads to children, shelves books, does an end-of-year inventory, works the book fairs, helps with author visits, creates displays, and works with kindergarteners on their reading and writing. “Joan always goes above and beyond in her volunteer roles to help make Northwood a positive and welcoming place,” said Ashton. Village Elementary Principal Tracie Czebatol recognized The Old Cruzers, a motorcycle club, for helping students in need. The group has donated shoes, socks, clothing, toys and gifts for dozens of Village students. “Their work and contributions made the lives of many students a lot brighter during the holiday season as well as every day of the school year,” said Czebatol. Karen Reynolds, a volunteer at Quest Elementary School, was recognized by Principal Renee Mulrooney for her work over the past 23 years assisting Quest teachers and helping to organize special events, such as the Thanksgiving feast. “Her ‘can do’ attitude is contagious and when Karen is in the building, we know she is going to ask ‘What do you need?’ and ‘How can I help?’ She is just that kind of person who never stops giving,” said Mulrooney. The district-wide Friends of Education Award was presented by Superintendent David Dimbleby to George Kaufman for the many hats he has worn in the Hilton community. As past president and founding member of the Hilton-Hamlin Chamber of Commerce, Kaufman was instrumental in bringing the national Make a Difference Day to Hilton. Eight years later the event is still going strong with 250 volunteers fanning out across the community to address needs in the village, town and school district. Provided information

What's Stopping You? When you decide to buy a home, you may feel resistance to doing some of the things that are necessary to turn your dream into a reality. An important part of our job as professional realtors is to help you overcome such resistance. When you locate the property you want to buy, you will have to handle many details within a very short period of time. There is a lot of paperwork, such as the financial statement and purchase agreement, in addition to the negotiations with the sellers. You may experience a range of emotions from mild jitters to profound buyers' remorse. It helps to remember that everyone who has purchased a home has experienced these same feelings -- "it's too much money" or "the local market will collapse completely the day after we close". Fortunately, almost none of these fears ever come true. As professional Realtors we are trained to take you through the home-buying jitters. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.
