Apple Fest features entertainment for all ages The Hilton Apple Fest draws both community groups, like the Greece Jazz Band, Hilton Generations Band and local dance studios, as well as groups popular in the greater Rochester area. Saturday’s main attraction on the Main Stage is the Figure 8 Band performing from 1 to 4 p.m. This dynamic band is comprised of five talented musicians: two lead vocalists and a full rhythm section. Classic Rock, 80s, 90s and Today’s Top 40 – Figure 8 plays it all. The four-member Mario and the Alrights plays classic rock from the ‘60s on up and can be seen at the Apple Fest Gazebo Stage on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The six-member brass Finger Lakes Alpine Band follows Mario and the Alrights on the Gazebo Stage from 3 to 5 p.m. On Sunday, the Main Stage features the Greece Jazz Band from 1 to 4 p.m. Performing in the greater Rochester area since 1997, the band was created after community surveys indicated a desire to hear big band jazz. As a volunteer big band, the members have developed a varied repertoire of familiar standards, dance tunes, and modern high-energy jazz charts. On the Gazebo Stage, Bill Schmitt and the Bluesmasters will perform from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This band is an exciting mix of seasoned musicians from a wide variety of area bands. Primarily a blues band, country, pop, rock and jazz influences can be heard in their music. The Grove Street Band takes to the Gazebo Stage from 2 to 4:30 p.m. This threepiece band plays R&B and some classic rock. The members have over 30 years of experience playing the Rochester area. The Kids’ Korner features plenty of entertainment this year as well. On Saturday, Amazing Magic Joe performs his magic from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by Farmer Tom Walsh from 12 to 2 p.m. His unique show includes action and silly songs, storytell-
ing, movement, singing games, laughter, learning, sing-a-longs, props and sticker giveaways. New this year are the Happy Pirates, performing on Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. Gary has turned over the helm of his ship to a new Happy Pirates crew made up of Captain Gully, the ukulele-playing, funloving leader; Scuttle, the prankster; and Sharkbait, the silly crewmate with a big heart. The three characters are played by John Barthelmes, Matthew Roy and Ryan Turco, who are improvisational artists, stage performers and friends. Sunday features a magic show as well with Bill Gormont’s World of Magic from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by Mike Kornrich from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Kornrich plays guitar, banjo and ukulele, and sings songs like “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad,” “When You’re Smiling” and “Rock Around The Clock” with silly antics in between songs. The Boomerang Club closes out the children’s entertainment from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday with a musical and fun family show that encourages audience participation. In addition to two days of entertainment, the Kids’ Korner will feature the wildly popular petting zoos both days of the festival; a bounce house, which is new this year; and children’s activities sponsored by churches and organizations. “The main focus is for children to have fun! I feel like our festival has something for everyone to enjoy from food to crafts to entertainment for young and old,” said Jane Mitchel, who has co-chaired the Apple Pie Contest in the past and decided to chair the children’s entertainment this year because she has a three-year old grandson with whom she loves to sing and dance. Be sure to check out the Apple Fest program for a complete listing of performers. Grace Griffee for the Apple Fest Committee

This year’s logo, designed by Tia Kennedy of North Greece, was selected by the Apple Fest Board and will be displayed on many clothing items and mugs. Kennedy has a passion for graphic design. She attended Kendall High School, received her bachelor’s in communications at Brockport College, and went on to receive her master’s. She now works at Brockport College and really enjoys working with students. Kennedy read about the Logo Contest on Facebook and initially submitted two entries. Her selected logo is the map of New York State with a red apple where Hilton is located. Kennedy goes to the Apple Fest every year – usually with her mom. Over 100 crafters and artisans showcase their work at Apple Fest The Hilton Apple Fest is perfectly timed for those who would like to start their holiday shopping early. This year, over 100 crafters will be on hand to showcase their handcrafted items with over 20 being brand new to the Apple Fest. The trend is “upcycling,” or reusing, repurposing or renewing items to create something new. Artisans must submit seven photos of their work, which the jurors use to determine the variety and quality of items to be sold. All items must be handmade by the crafter. Robin Kellogg of Kellogg’s Alpacas in Scio, New York is one of the Apple Fest’s new crafters. “We have 14 alpacas and have been raising them for 14 years,” she said. “Alpacas have an amazing soft and warm coat that we shear once a year and have it spun into yarn.” From there she knits, crochets, weaves and felts scarves, hats, mittens, rugs, shawls and other items. “We also sell Alpaca socks that are made through a co-op and they are the best you will ever wear,” she said. As in previous years, judges will visit each craft booth on Saturday, September 30 beginning at 9 a.m. to award ribbons in the following categories: Clothing, Decorative Wood, Drawing/Painting, Fine Art, Floral, Glass, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Photography, Pottery/Ceramics, Special Media, Textiles, Wood and Best of Show. Awards are pre-
sented at 4 p.m. at the Main Stage. The winner of each category does not have to be juried to be accepted into the 2018 Hilton Apple Fest and the Best of Show receives a free single booth for the following year. Each crafter is asked to participate in the Craft Raffle by donating a homemade item from their booth. Proceeds from the raffle are donated to a local non-profit organization. Thanks to the generosity of last year’s crafters, $1,300 was donated to the Hilton Community Council. Grace Griffee for the Hilton Apple Fest Committee

Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show celebrates 50th anniversary of Chevrolet Camaro The 37th Annual Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Chevy Camaro this year. According to Mike Ahl, who has been involved with the show since 1982 and has chaired it for over 20 years, the committee does research to find a significant milestone or anniversary to highlight each year. The show will be held on Saturday, September 30, rain or shine, at Village Elementary School, 100 School Lane, with registration from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The entry fee is $15 cash only per car with proceeds benefitting local charities. “Although I don’t own a classic car, I enjoy being able help out our community by making donations to local charities from our proceeds each year,” said Ahl. “That is what the Apple Fest Auto Show is all about, and why I am happy to chair it.” Goodie bags and dash plaques are given to the first 500 registrants. Judging takes place from 12 to 2 p.m. and prizes are awarded at 4 p.m. There are special awards for Club Participation; Hilton Mayor’s Choice; Best Overall Car of Show and Best Camaro of Show. Plaques are awarded for first, second and third place in 32 different classes. In addition to having a great time viewing some classic cars, participants can
enjoy a chicken barbeque sponsored by the Clio Lodge No. 779, and hot dogs and hamburgers sold by the Hilton United Methodist Church. One of the largest shows in the area, the Apple Fest features an average of 600 vehicles each year. A shuttle bus will run to and from the show to the Apple Fest grounds from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.hiltonapplefest.org. Apples take center stage at 37th Annual Hilton Apple Fest
The Right Blend...
What would the Hilton Apple Fest be without delicious fresh apples and everything else apple? Well, it would just be another festival! This year, both Zarpentine’s Apple Farm and R & K Zarpentine Bakery will be on hand to provide apples, cider and plenty of baked goods. “We are very excited to be participating in the Apple Fest again this year!” said Kim Francis, co-owner of R & K Zarpentine Bakery with her brother Rob. The bakery is currently located at Arrowhead Golf Course on Gallup Road in Spencerport. Known for their popular baked goods, R & K will be bringing their original recipe apple fritters, apple pie bites and Rob’s cider fry cakes. “The apple fritters were number one on the request list for many years, but over time the cider fry cakes and apple pie bites have given them a run for the top spot!” said Francis. They will also have some bagged apples and cider available for sale. “We have participated in the Apple Fest every year almost from the very beginning,” said Francis. “As a resident of the Village, we are very committed to participating in an event that helps to bring people into our community, and to raise funds and support for the great nonprofit groups that are represented.” Zarpentine Farms, located on Burritt Road in Hilton, will have a wide variety of apples for sale, including Cortland, Empire, Gala, Ginger Gold, Honeycrisp, Macintosh, 20 Ounce and Zestar. “The apples are excellent size and plentiful this year with all of the rain,” said Ron Zarpentine, owner.

“Last year’s apple were smaller in size because it was so dry.” On his farm, Zarpentine grows 18 different varieties. In addition to apples, Zarpentine Farms will have cider and seven flavors of bread – apple caramel, banana caramel, cinnamon caramel, cranberry orange, pumpkin, triple berry and zucchini, plus blueberry, maple and cinnamon coffee cakes. For maple syrup lovers, they will have Red’s Best syrup, produced in Sherman, New York, available for purchase. After stopping by the apple growers’ booths, visitors will want to be part of the time-honored tradition and line up early for a dish of hot apple crisp. The giant apple crisp is being baked each day and will be available starting at noon. A huge array of food offerings being sold by nonprofit organizations featuring apples includes apple sausage, hot caramel cider, deep fried apple sticks, apple cider slushies, apple fritters, candy apples and hot apple sundaes. According to the New York Apple Association, New York’s apple harvest is forecasted to be 28 million cartons or 1.1 billion pounds over the coming weeks. “New York State grows more apples than any other state east of the Mississippi River, our state is made for growing apples,” said NYAA President Cynthia Haskins. “There is no reason for New Yorkers and other East Coast buyers to look any further than their own backyard for great tasking apples and apple cider.” Grace Griffee for the Hilton Apple Fest Committee

Apple Fest Apple Crisp In 1982 the Hilton Apple Fest decided to bake the world’s largest apple pie, an 18 foot wide, 18 inch deep pie for the second Hilton Apple Harvest Fest. It was quite an undertaking, requiring many people to assemble and bake the pie. Unfortunately, another group from England baked a pie just a little larger, winning the title. In 1983 Apple Fest organizers decided to bake the smallest apple pies, baked in bottle caps, another labor intensive undertaking. In 1984 it was decided that apple crisp would be easier to make and serve. The Board contacted the WEMOCO school in Spencerport, and they agreed to make a pan which would allow the baking of the apple crisp at the Apple Fest. The welded pan measured five feet across and approximately five inches deep. A group of Apple Fest volunteers assembled an “oven cap” using sheet steel and iron bracing which would cover the crisp while it is cooking. The Apple Fest also purchased a propane burner which is used under the pan to bake
the crisp. Concrete blocks were used for the oven sides and sand lined the bottom of the oven. On the Friday before Apple Fest weekend, volunteers went to the Hilton High School and used the high school kitchen mixing equipment to make the crisp topping. Each day a new apple crisp was baked on the grounds, consisting of apples, filling, butter, cinnamon and crisp topping. After covering the crisp with more aluminum foil, the oven top was placed over the pan and the propane burner lit. It took about three hours to cook the crisp. After about an hour of the baking, the smell of the apple crisp permeates the air. Each apple crisp serves about a thousand people. Over the years, the concrete blocks used for the walls and the heavy steel oven top have been replaced, but the original pan as well as the original propane burner are still in use today.
