Plenty of fun for kids at Apple Fest Parents won’t hear the kids moan and groan when they suggest going to the Hilton Apple Fest. There’s much more to the event than crafters and tasty food. In fact, an entire section is devoted to children’s activities, including entertainers, games and crafts. A big draw every year is Corey’s Apple Pond where children (and sometimes adults) pick an apple from the “pond” for $1. Each apple has a wooden stick with a number that corresponds to a kid-friendly prize, many of which have been donated by Wegmans. Saturday’s entertainment includes performances by the Dinner Dogs, a musical group that performs hip, imaginative songs with themes such as self-esteem, safe habits, conflict avoidance and family life; Magician Bill Gormont, who has been performing illusions for over 20 years; and Lynn Koch, a traditional folk singer. On Sunday, Gary the Happy Pirate, a favorite, will have sing-alongs and dancing; Mike Kornrich whose silly antics make his performances of favorite songs even more fun; and Amazing Magic Joe, who most recently performed his illusions at the Rochester Fringe Festival. In the Kids’ Korner area, children can also enjoy the Grease Paint Alley Clowns, along with crafts and games sponsored by local non-profit organizations. This year there will be hair chalking, a fish pond, beading, digging for dinos, glitter tattoos, sand art necklaces, face painting and other fun activities. Two petting zoos will be on hand – Mini Ark Farm and Two Farm Barns

– one on Saturday and one Sunday. Inside the Hilton Community Center, and always a great option when it rains, is the Sports Cards and Memorabilia Show. Also located in the senior lounge section of the Community Center will be a private room for nursing moms. “The most wonderful thing about the Apple Fest is that it’s family friendly,” said Charlie Martella, volunteer. “There’s no admission charge, no alcohol and no gaming, so you can really feel comfortable about bringing kids and having a good time.” prepared by Grace Griffee for the Hilton Apple Fest Committee

HAF helps community organizations make ends meet all year long Did you know that the Hilton Apple Fest only allows local not-for-profit groups as food vendors, doesn’t take any commission from the food sales and only allows a particular food to be sold by one vendor so there are no duplicate offerings? “The Apple Fest is totally community based,” said Charlie Martella, who assists with four
food booths – Boys Scout Troop 125, Cub Scout Pack 330, Hilton Winter Drumline and Climbing for Christ. “One way or another, if you’ve lived in this community, you’ve benefited from the Apple Fest. The money goes right back into the community.” The array of foods offered at the Apple Fest is a draw for crowds of people

The 2015 Hilton Apple Fest will feature 125 crafters carefully selected by four jurors that represent ages 20 through 60. “Everyone has different taste, so we want to make sure our crafters reflect that,” said Terry Quetschenbach, Apple Fest Committee chair in charge of gathering artisans and developing the layout of booths. Artisans must submit seven photos of their work, which the jurors use to determine the variety and quality of items to be sold. All items must be handmade by the crafter. Kim Keller, who is traveling from Norwood, NY near Potsdam, is brand new to the Hilton Apple Fest. “Hilton is in a different area from where I normally exhibit,” she said. “I want to see what people in other places think of the quilts I make.” Keller taught herself how to quilt in the 1970s, then went back to quilting about 10 years ago. “I fell in love with miniature block quilts,” she said. Her miniature blocks measure an average of two inches and all of her quilts are wall hangings that can be framed or hung with the dowel that is included. “I only do a few shows, but I quilt year round,” Keller said. Keller Country Quilts can be found in Booth 56, north of the Craft Raffle Booth. Margaret Bird of Bird’s Birdhouses has been participating in the Hilton Apple Fest with her husband, David, for at least 15 years. “Hilton is a nice set up,” she said. “The food is great – it’s not carnival food – and it’s not a huge show. It’s just comfortable and Terry (Quetschenbach) is great to work with.” The Birds have actually been making birdhouses for 32 years. “My husband
made four for each of our children and told me not to take them to work because he was not going to start making birdhouses!” said Margaret. “Well, I did take one and came home with orders. We now have a birdhouse in every state, plus Australia and a few other countries.” Bird’s birdhouses are all the same shape, but have many personal touches to reflect everything from a favorite sports team to a branch of the service. “David cuts out all of the pieces and then I paint them and nail them together,” explained Margaret. “I tried to help by cutting out a word once, but picked ‘Pittsburgh’ and ended up getting frustrated and breaking a letter!” Bird’s Birdhouses can be found in Booth 38 at the far end of the row, north of the Souvenir Booth. As in previous years, judges will visit each craft booth on Saturday, October 3 beginning at 9 a.m. to award ribbons in the following categories: Clothing, Decorative Wood, Drawing/Painting, Fine Art, Floral, Glass, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Photography, Pottery/Ceramics, Special Media, Textiles, Wood, and Best of Show. Awards are presented at 4 p.m. at the Main Stage. The winner of each category does not have to be juried to be accepted into the 2016 Hilton Apple Fest and the Best of Show receives a free single booth for the following year. Each crafter is asked to participate in the Craft Raffle by donating a homemade item from their booth. Proceeds from the raffle are donated to a local non-profit organization. prepared by Grace Griffee for the Hilton Apple Fest Committee

Hilton Apple Fest – for the Apple Lover at heart You know the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Low in calories and sodium, and high in fiber and vitamin C, apples have long been associated with healthy eating. The Hilton Apple Fest embraces that fact with three apple-filled events: an Apple Pie Eating Contest, an Apple Pie Baking Contest and of course, the giant apple crisp. The Apple Pie Eating Contest is in its fifth year and is made possible thanks to 12 pie-loving contestants, six judges and 12 pies donated by Tops Friendly Market in Hilton. Since it’s the Apple Fest’s 35th Anniversary, the contest will be held both days of the festival at 2 p.m. in the Special Events Tent. First, second and third prizes are awarded to the fastest finishers as long as they do not use their hands, finish the whole pie and, of course, keep it all down. Those who prefer to bake their own

pies can enter the Pie Baking Contest. Last year, there were eight judges evaluating 46 pies. “I never have any problem getting judges!” said Linda Viney, who organizes the competition with Jane Mitchel. After the judges look over each pie, volunteers cut them and run samples over to the judging table where each pie receives points based on its taste and texture. “We get some pretty elaborate pies and some simple ones, too,” said Viney. In the adult division, prizes are awarded for first ($100), second ($50) and third ($25) place and in the youth division (16 and under), prizes are awarded for first ($50) and second ($25) place. “One year, a five-year old entered and took a video to prove that he made the pie all by himself,” remembered Viney. For the Apple Lover at heart Continued from previous page Anyone can enter the Pie Baking Contest as long as he or she is a New York State resident. Entrants also must state what kind of apples they used to make their creation. Last year’s grand prize went to a Crispin apple pie baked by Christan Monin and Patti Melvin, and in the youth division, a Cortland apple pie baked by Claire Buck. Prizes are awarded on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. on the Main Stage. Everyone can participate in enjoying the giant apple crisp by simply purchasing a piping hot bowlful for only $2. Jim Sage is in charge of making the crisp and has been since the Apple Fest began 35 years ago. He prepares the topping on Friday in the kitchen at Hilton High School, then is on site at 6 a.m. assembling the 15-foot, six-inch deep crisp. By 7 a.m. it’s cooking and
by noon, it’s ready to serve. So what goes into a crisp so large? Sage said that for each one, he uses 25 pounds of flour, 15 pounds of sugar, 12 to 13 pounds of butter, 700 pounds of apple filling and plenty of cinnamon. “It’s a good crisp – nice and sweet,” he added. From all of those ingredients, Sage gets 1,000 to 1,100 servings on a good day. When it rains, some of the crisp inevitably gets ruined before it can be served. That night, Sage washes and sterilizes all of the equipment, and is back Sunday morning doing it all over again. Proceeds from the sale of the apple crisp are donated to local charities and go back into the community. This year, you can find the apple crisp front and center in the first row closest to the Hilton Community Center. prepared by Grace Griffee for the Hilton Apple Fest Committee

This year’s Apple Fest souvenirs will be emblazoned with a logo designed by 2015 Hilton High School graduate Ben Rockafellow, who is now a graphic design student at SUNY Fredonia. “I remember going to the Apple Fest since I was a little kid and looking at all of the arts and crafts booths,” he said. “So I decided to incorporate the craft side of the festival into my logo, which looks like a sign that could be sold in one of the craft booths.” Rockafellow also won the logo contest five years ago and has been entering ever since. This year’s entry celebrates the Apple Fest’s 35th year and will be stitched onto crewneck sweatshirts, zip hoodies, “hockey laced” sweatshirts, long-sleeved and short-sleeved T-shirts, camo hats and patriotic hats (new this year), youth T-shirts and sweatshirts, bibs, onesies, aprons and visors. Adult sweatshirts start at $25 and adult T-shirts start at $14. “For the past two years, we’ve been providing the color that the logo will be embroidered on so people can keep that in mind when designing their logos,” said Cathy Carmestro, who organizes the logo contest and orders the souvenir items. This year’s items have a navy blue background. There were 53 entries for the 2015 contest, some from as far away as a high school in Allendale, NJ. “Two of their three submissions made it into the top 10,” said Carmestro. “I really

Quiet Comfort Many homeowners may think the best gas furnaces are not seen or heard. That’s why and Amana brand AMVM97 Modulating Variable-Speed Furnace is insulated for noise reduction. However, the real secret to its unobtrusiveness is that it strives to operate on low capacity as often and as long as possible and, therefore, produces as low as 25% of the normal high-fire and circulating blower sound generated by furnaces with multi-speed motors. Energy Efficiency Energy efficiency equates to cost savings. A gas furnace’s efficiency rating can primarily be determined by two factors: its AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency), which indicates what percentage of each dollar of natural gas purchased is actually used to heat your home; and the type of blower used in the furnace. Quilt and Craft Raffles bring in big money for local charities and outreach efforts You wouldn’t think that selling 50 cent raffle tickets could make such a huge difference in a community, but it does. At the Hilton Apple Fest Craft Raffle Booth, crafters each donate one item then patrons purchase raffle tickets for 50 cents each for the items they would like to win. On average, between $1,200 and $1,800 is raised for the Hilton-Parma Community Council of Churches, the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf’s umbrella agency, to provide holiday baskets for local families in need and to purchase items for the Food Shelf throughout the year that aren’t received through community donations. Since each crafter donates an item, there are about 125 handcrafted items available for the Craft Raffle. The winning tickets are pulled at the Craft Raffle Booth on Sunday afternoon and winners do not have to be present to win. Two dates will be selected for winners to pick up their items at the Hilton Community Center.
In addition to crafts, a beautiful quilt will be raffled off on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. on the Main Stage. The quilt, which measures about 4x5 feet and features an “Apple a Day” theme, was donated by St. John the Evangelist Church in Spencerport. Tickets are $1 each or 10 for $5 and are being sold at Tops Friendly Market in Hilton beginning Sept. 25 and at the Craft Raffle Booth during the Apple Fest. Proceeds from the Quilt Raffle fund the Apple Fest Scholarship which goes to two Hilton High School seniors who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism in the community. Last year’s winners of the $200 scholarship were Ashley LaFountain and Taylor Sile. Linda Viney, Hilton Apple Fest Committee member, said she hopes this year’s raffle is even more successful, so that the Committee is able to offer an even larger scholarship to graduating seniors. Shuttle buses available for Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show The Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show has been around since the Apple Fest’s very first year – 35 years ago. Last year was the first time organizers tried a new layout at Village Elementary School, 100 School Lane, with the soccer field on the west side and north side of the school grounds both being used so that all of the vehicles can be parked on grass. The area can now accommodate 1,000 cars and last year’s show had about half that. Mike Ahl, Auto Show chairman, said that the weather and further walking distance with the new layout were contributing factors. So this year a shuttle bus that runs between the Auto Show and Apple Fest is being added. For the 35th Anniversary, the show will be celebrating sports cars with special awards for club participation, Hilton Mayor’s Choice, Parma Town

Hilton Apple 27, Fest2015 19 September
Early Apple Fests set the stage for three decades of fun Early in 1981, a group of dedicated Hilton citizens got together and began the planning for an “Apple Harvest Festival” - the first of an annual fall celebration that has come to be known as “Hilton Apple Fest.” This year marks the 30th 35th festival.
1982 -- These two women were first and second to get a slice of the big apple pie. Though gargantuan, the pie did not make the Guinness Book of World Records because a group in England baked a heavier pie and the recognition for ‘biggest’ went to that group. Hilton Apple Fest organizers thought the award unfair, given that the English ‘pie’ was square and not round, as a pie is traditionally thought of, and the pan was fabricated in sections, thus creating more of a strip formation rather than solid filling. Though not officially the world’s largest, Hilton efforts included many community members and groups, was a big undertaking and was well received by festival-goers.
In 1982, organizers brought world attention to the Hilton area when they attempted to bake the World’s Largest Apple Pie. Guinness World Book publishers gave the recognition to English townspeople who, one month earlier, had baked a so-called apple pie in a larger, rectangular pan. In an effort to show the British their sense of humor, Hilton Apple Fest planners the next year baked the World’s Smallest Apple Pie in a bottle cap. Above, Laurie Marple and Lynn Sarfaty place a ‘whole lot of crust’ on the edges of the made-to-order pie pan for the big pie. After the apple pie came apple crisp-- get in line early because it always sells out. Photo from the 1990s.

The purpose of the Apple Fest was to offer free family entertainment while celebrating the apple harvest season, the Hilton/Parma community, and the local apple growers. Thirty-five years later, the Apple Fest Committee has stayed true to that purpose. One of the reasons for Apple Fest’s success is the help it receives from approximately 300 volunteers. File photos
HAF Photo Contest highlights “Windows and Doors – Thresholds to the World” The Hilton Apple Festival Photo Contest has been around for about 15 years, but never have the stakes been as high as they are this year. The theme “Windows and Doors – Thresholds to the World” has prompted Rochester Colonial to sponsor the contest and provide a “Rochester Colonial Best of Show” award in the amount of $200. “We are honored to be able to sponsor the 2015 Hilton Apple Fest Photo Contest,” said Michael Gionta, sales manager. “This year’s theme
obviously resonates with us and given the many beautiful windows and doors in our community, we expect the judges are going to have a tough job on their hands.” Photographers are encouraged to capture the beauty that can be found as they pass from place to place – discovering portals old and new. Maureen Spindler, who organizes the photo contest, says she hopes photographers use their imagination and creative eye to capture photos that show the passageways of life in ways
that exemplify their inviting nature or decorative design. Prizes are also awarded for first, second and third place in adult, teen and kids categories. This year’s judges are Gene Berndt, past president of Kodak Camera Club; Megan Schreiber, graphic designer for The Pavilion Company in Bergen; and Kelly Sullivan, owner of “Portraits For Life,” a boutique portrait studio in Spencerport. The judging takes place Oct. 1 and awards are presented on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. on the Main
Stage. The Photo Contest entries will be on display at the Hilton Community Center in the Ingham Room on both Saturday and Sunday, and then at the Parma Public Library through October. The winning entries also will be featured on the Hilton Apple Fest website at hiltonapplefest.org. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 28. prepared by Grace Griffee for the Hilton Apple Fest Commitee
