42nd Street at The Kodak Center for Performing Arts For a few exciting days, the West Ridge Road stage at the Kodak Center for Performing Arts will be magically transformed to Broadway for a production of the multiple Tony Award winning musical 42nd Street. With a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, and music and lyrics by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, the musical won multiple Tony Awards for its 1980 Broadway production, including Best Musical. Its revival in 2001 also won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. Premier Productions, in partnership with RAPA, brings this musical treasure to Rochester audiences under the guidance of artistic and vocal director, Judith Ranaletta. Joining her as Assistant Director and Production Manager is Vince Salvadge. The two have worked together on many previous successful productions. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes, and a Hollywood screen version, 42nd Street tells the story of aspiring actress Peggy Sawyer, fresh off the bus in New York City from Allentown, PA. With such memorable musical numbers as “You’re Getting to be a Habit with Me,” “We’re in the Money,” and the classic, “Lullaby of Broadway,” this show is for everyone who ever had a dream. For lovers of the classic Broadway musical, 42nd Street offers all the glitz and glamour of those bygone days. Enjoy the gorgeous sets, the beautiful costumes designed by Shelley Stam, and the artistic talents of orchestra conduct-

er Terry Bacon and choreographers Terri Filips-Vaughan and Jessica Young-Carbonel. Leading the cast of thirty-three adult professional performers are Robert Zimmerman [Julian Marsh], Emily Putnam [Peggy Sawyer], Courtney Maxwell [Dorothy Brock], Kyle Critelli [Billy Lawlor], Mike Benoit [Bert Barry], Jeff Miller [Abner Dillon] and Dresden Engle [Maggie Jones]. Performances are Saturday, April 22 at 7:30PM; Sunday, April 23, at 2PM; Friday, April 28, at 7:30PM; Saturday, April 29, at 7:30PM; and Sunday, April 30, at 2PM. Opioids: The Drug Next Door Part 5 - Turning pain into purpose. by Tami Raco

On October 12, 2016 Tony Stagnitto overdosed on heroin. Tony, a former Churchville-Chili student, was 27 years old when he died. Rocco Stagnitto, Tony’s father learned that Tony began drinking and smoking marijuana with his brothers at a young age after he and his wife divorced. At the age of 18 Tony was arrested for breaking into a store to get money for his drug addiction. Tony was sentenced to “Shock Camp” incarceration instead of jail. Shock Camp Incarceration is a program started in 1987 by an act of the New York State Legislature. It diverts non-violent felons who meet the program’s criteria from their prison sentences to a six-month boot camp-like program. Tony struggled staying clean after his release from Shock Camp. Sadly, he kept returning to his same friend circle and would slip back into using again. He was in and out of jail many times and had several overdoses but it was never enough to rid him of this deadly addiction. Tony’s final release from Shock Camp was on October 12, 2016. Tony took a bus to Rochester and arrived at 9AM. He met with his parole officer that morning. A few hours later he was found overdosed at 105 Evergreen Street near North Clinton in the city of Rochester. A neighbor saw a man lying behind the house and called 911. When the ambulance arrived they found an empty Narcan (overdose rescue) kit next to Tony’s body

indicating he wasn’t alone when he overdosed but the person with him, who attempted to revive him, fled the scene and left him there. The single use of Narcan did not work and by the time someone found him and called 911

Rocco Stagnitto sporting a custom t-shirt from his anti-drug tshirt line called Rage and Redemption.

he was brain dead. Tony was on life support for several days until his family all arrived to say their goodbyes. Tony passed away on October 17, 2016. Rocco Stagnitto took the grief and pain of losing his son to this horrible addiction and turned it into purpose. The first time Rocco visited the site where Tony overdosed he made a live Facebook video. The video went viral and exposed the rampant drug problems in the city, it was interwoven with the heart wrenching emotions of a father who lost his son. Rocco’s home grown video displayed the raw pain of a father’s grief and torment from this horrible epidemic, opioid addiction. The viral video led to many television and radio interviews. Tony and his youngest son Sebastian were honored to be able to speak to the public about their loss. Their hope is by telling Tony’s story it can help prevent other lives from being taking by this addiction. Although Rocco has gained notoriety in the local media, he says, “I

am not a hero. My kid died. I failed.” Rocco continues his fight in this opioid epidemic to honor the son he lost. He began making a line of anti-drug t-shirts. The t-shirts have a flare of anger behind them but they are truly all heart with Rocco’s passion to make an impact on saving lives. The t-shirts can be found on his Facebook page or the tshirt Facebook page “Rage and Redemption Clothing.” Rocco continues his mission to educate, advocate and fight this war on drugs. On February 29, 2017, Rocco organized a group of people to visit the place where Tony overdosed to clean up the area of all the drug needles and paraphernalia. Rocco recalls, “It was kinda cool how it all came together. I just mentioned on Facebook that I wanted to do this in Tony’s memory and I had over 50 people offer to help.” Rocco contacted the city to make sure he was able to do this. The city was very helpful. He filled out an application to conduct the needle cleanup project. Trillium needle exchange program provided the bags, rakes, gloves and biohazard containers needed to collect the used needles. Rocco and his supporters had the corner cleaned up quickly and moved over to another drug riddled corner. In less than two hours Rocco’s group had collected 1000 used needles. They were all turned over to Trillium. Rocco continues fighting on the front line of this epidemic. “Tony hated being an addict,” says Rocco. “He just couldn’t escape the grip of his addiction.” Rocco hopes that through his loss, other parents will learn from his tragedy and stay close to their kids to prevent this from happening to other families. Rocco says “Don’t be the nice guy. You’re not your child’s friend, you are their parent. Ask questions, verify that they are where they say they are. Kids can make reckless choices it’s our job to watch out for them.” Tony’s death is a stark representation of how necessary it is that addicts in recovery move to an environment and friends that support recovery. Thanks to the New York State Opioid and Heroin Task Force legislation funding was allocated to begin programs to help provide a recovery environment for those struggling with addiction. Recovery Living Communities and Half-way Houses are all part of the equation to help an addict stay on track. continued from page 14

Ann Domingos is the CEO of CASA Trinity has been an addiction clinician since 1999. According to Ann, “Addiction is a broken brain.” Getting proper treatment and follow up is no different than requiring a heart attack patient to get help and follow up rehabilitation. Ann oversees outpatient clinics in the SouthernTier but is now in the process of opening a 25 bed residential long term living community to help with the providing a safe sober community for addicts seeking recovery. CASA Trinity was able to secure almost two million dollars in grants to serve this need. The 25 bed living community will be a safe place to help addicts transition from rehab into a recovery centered living environment for up to 6 months. Yana Khashper and Sean Smith are both recovered addicts and have personally experienced the value of living an active and fit lifestyle to help them honor their journey of recovery. What began as an accident is now opening as the area’s premiere sober active community, ROCovery-Fitness. A few years ago Sean and Yana posted on Facebook that they were going to start a hiking group to help be accountable to living a sober and health life style. A few people joined them and it kept growing. The group engages in various outdoor physical activities. The weather in Upstate New York limited the groups activities. An angel donor that had lost a family member to addiction gifted a building that become ROCovery-Fitness. The building is located at 1035 Dewey Avenue, the former Hahns Photo. ROCovery Fitness is a non-profit that is dedicated to supporting a community of physically active individuals brought together by sober living and committed to creating an environment of healing and recovery. Members are empowered to discover their inner strength and confidence through adventure, fun, fitness and camaraderie. Yana hopes to open the center in

March’s Fury

Kindness Revealed in Crisis by Tami Raco

The Wind Storm of 2017 took the area by surprise as wind speeds up to 81 mph ripped through local communities. Previously, the highest wind speed recorded in this area was 89 mph. Destructive and powerful winds took down an estimated 3000 power lines and over 400 utility poles in the area. The storm resulted in power outages to 125,000 homes. It was the largest power outage to affect this area in 14 years. Greece was one of the worst hit communities. Many residents were left without power for up to five days. Temperatures plummeted after the storm creating a dangerous situation for those without heat. This was especially true for Greece’s 38% senior citizen population. Hotels within the region quickly filled up as displaced residents left their homes to seek warmth and safety. Many residents and out of town utility workers were left with no place to go. The strength of the community shined through the aftermath of the storm when Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich opened the Community and Senior Center as a warming shelter for anyone who was in need of heat, food or a place to sleep. Peter O’Brien, Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Greece, and his staff quickly pulled together to staff the warming center. The shelter opened to the public mid-day on Thursday, March 8th and remained open until Tuesday, March 14th at 8PM, after all residents had their power restored.

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich, Greece Chief of Police Patrick Phelan, and Town of Greece Police officers working in the Emergency Response Center during the windstorm disaster. Provided Photo

According to O’Brien the shelter offered warmth, food and beverages to anyone in need of it. In addition the center provided cots, blankets, pillows, showers, toiletries, electronic charging stations, television, game room and children’s activity room. The Center’s staff worked tirelessly to welcome and help displaced residents. The reception area also helped the residents stay informed on the status of the power restoration. With the assistance of Greece Central Schools, transportation was provided to any Greece resident in need, helping with rides to the center or back home. Greece Volunteer Ambulance Service was also on site providing emergency medical assistance and provisions. The presence of the Greece Volunteer Ambulance Service made the Greece Shelter one of the only shelters for oxygen dependent residents. O’Brien said the center provided services to Greece residents and also to families from the City of Rochester, Brighton, Irondequoit and Hilton. The center served nearly 200 displaced residents as well as up to 60 out of town utility workers. Often when a disaster hits frenzy and survival of the fittest can set in. The devastation of this storm instead revealed the character and strength of the Greece Community. Hundreds of people from the Community, Churches, Schools, Businesses, Boy and Girl Scout Troops and Civic Organizations pulled together to help. “This was a real community effort,” O’Brien said. He witnessed an amazing outpouring of generosity being offered by many. The Greece United Soccer Club worked with Walmart to provide pillows and toiletries. Greece Assembly of God, Lakeshore Community Church and First Bible Baptist Church helped the Center by providing volunteers, food, beverages, laundry services, cleaning crews and support to residents, as well as to the hard working linemen who worked tirelessly helping restore power. bly of God heard the town was opening up to provide a warming shelter he stopped in and asked, “How can we help serve the community?” He learned many volunteers were needed to provide manpower at the 24/7 warming center. Pastor Pat and his staff then went to work personally calling their church directory to first ask if anyone needed any help, and second to ask who would be willing and able to serve by helping at the shelter. This initiative turned into over 75 members offering assistance. Volunteers assisted in a variety of roles including providing support to the town staff, keeping the center clean, serving meals and providing laundry services to keep up with fresh linens needed by those sleeping at the shelter. Pastor Pat also gratefully acknowledged Ricci’s Restaurant for their generosity in partnering with Greece Assembly of God in providing meals to the center. In addition to helping at the warming shelter, Pastor Pat and his volunteers purchased and delivered coffee, donuts and sub trays to the lineman and Greece Department of Public Works employees who were working exhausting hours on the storm cleanup. “It was a real joy to serve our community. We are really blessed and times like this brings our blessings to the forefront. We are at our best when we can serve together,” Pastor Pat said. Lakeshore Community Church and Greece Assembly of God churches also provided support. After the storm, Pastor Corey Hunneyman of Lakeshore Community Church contacted the town to offer help. Pastor Corey connected with church members through their website and social media. The request for help was answered by 75 Lakeshore Community Church members. In particular Pastor Corey wanted to help cover the overnight shift so tired town continued on page 20

employees could go home to their families and rest. “We were very excited to help. We saw a need and truly care about our community so we served,” Pastor Corey said. Both churches cancelled their services that weekend due to the outages. They strongly encouraged their members to take the time and serve the community. Even though they couldn’t have a church service, they still experienced church by serving in their community. First Bible Baptist Church’s Pastor Don Curran offered his services to help at the warming center after one of his members, a Greece Police Officer, expressed to him just how exhausted the center employees were working through this difficult time. Pastor Don contacted Peter O’Brien to offer help. O’Brien accepted the offer for the church volunteers to help cover the Sunday night overnight shift so that his staff could get some rest. Pastor Don contacted his members and arranged a schedule of 18 volunteers to fill the overnight shifts. “We love God, we love to serve and offer a blessing to our community,” Pastor Don said. During the six days the Community Center operated as a warming shelter, the kindness of the people in the community working together during crisis was a testimony to the heart of Greece. “It was heart warming to see the community, far and wide, come together to assist their neighbors in need. Under Supervisor Reilich’s leadership our Community Center transformed from a place of recreation to a place of safety. From volunteers to town staff it shows the generosity that lies within the Town of Greece, its residents and businesses,” O’Brien said.

- A Novel by Diane Rivoli Chapter 56 LICENSE FOR A PROPOSAL Dixie lay, flopped like a rag doll, on the ground in Mike’s back yard, her eyes closed. Closed partly because she barely had enough energy to keep them open and partly to block out the bright sun that shone down on her from the bluer than blue late summer sky. Mike lay next to her, equally flopped, his own eyes closed. Dixie thought he might have even fallen asleep. Finally she mustered the strength to sit up. She heard Mike mumble something and she grabbed his arm to pull him up into a sitting position beside her. “Oooww!” he complained, wincing a little as he rubbed his upper right arm and shoulder with his left hand. And then he smiled. They had started at 7:00 that morning. For the next eight hours

Community shelter room were cots were set up for out of town linemen in the area working to restore power. Photo by Tami Raco they had dug and lifted and raked and watered and sweated. And now the fruits of their labors were spread out before them - A maple tree, two blue spruce and six variegated dogwoods planted in the back yard, and a crabapple, a forsythia and two boxwoods planted in the front. “Look at it, Mike! It looks awesome already! Just imagine how it’s going to look in the future as things grow. And in the spring the crabapple will be pink and the forsythia will be yellow. It’ll be beautiful. I can’t wait!” “I’m going to take some pictures and email them to Boyd. I want him to see I took his advice. Maybe almost two months later than he thought I should, but I still got it done this year instead of waiting till next! I’ll send him pictures of the almost finished hardwood floor too. “Yeah, you know, for some reason I got a lot done this summer,” he continued, trying to feign confusion. But he couldn’t keep the glint of a tease from his eyes. And the smile that he tried to hold in kept popping out onto his lips despite his efforts. “I really don’t know what that reason could be though. Do you continued on page 23

- A Novel by Diane Rivoli continued from page 22 have any idea what that reason could be, Dixie?” Mike gave way to his smile and leaned in close to give Dixie a kiss but stopped short, his lips barely touching hers before he pulled away. “Was that supposed to be a kiss? Don’t I deserve something more major for all my help than a kiss that felt like a mosquito buzzing by my lips?” She tried to sound slighted but she laughed instead. She knew the reason for the peck instead of the smooch. “Oh Dixie, you do! You deserve way better than that. And I promise, once I change from smelly, slick and salty into suave and sophisticated, I will give you the proper thank you that you most definitely deserve.” “Me first!” Dixie shouted, jumping up and bolting for the sliding screen door, looking behind her at Mike as she ran. “I’m getting suave and sophisticated first!” She rushed inside, laughing, and headed for the bathroom and the relief of a nice cool shower. The water flowed from the showerhead in a refreshing cascade. It washed cool over her sweaty upturned face, ran warm down the rest of her body and hit her feet almost hot. She was a sun, changing the temperature of the water on contact with her abundant solar power. Suddenly the shower curtain slid open. “I figured we’d save water,” Mike said innocently as he stepped into the tub behind her. So they took turns. While one of them soaped up, the other one rinsed. While one shampooed, the other conditioned. Dixie didn’t think they saved any water though. It was running the whole time Mike gave her the proper thank you that she did most assuredly deserve. *** Later, they headed up to Elwanger Beach Park for some ice cream. The line at Crocus Hill Creamery was long. It snaked down the sidewalk and along the edge of the parking lot for what must have been half a mile. Everybody seemed to have had the same idea as Mike and Dixie. Enjoy summer’s warmth while it was still here. It was almost September, and although still officially summer, once September hit, the air always had an underlying touch of coolness to it regardless of how warm the thermometer declared it to be. But efficiency was a top priority at Crocus Hill. The line moved quickly and soon they had their cones in hand; two scoops for Mike - Chocolate Brownie Blitz on the bottom and Eggnog on the top. And one scoop of Elderberry for Dixie. They sat at a picnic table licking their cones as the day began to wane and the clouds took on shadings of pink and orange with the glow of the descending sun. Seagulls glided above or ambled about on the sparse grass or in the sand, screaming at each other and fighting over scraps of hot dog buns, stale potato chips and orange cheese puffs that had been left behind by messy picnickers. One gull was struggling to pilfer a half-eaten ear of corn away from a group that was pecking at it together and claim it for its selfish own. Shrill shrieks and screeches accompanied jabbing beaks and sharp, taloned claws as they all fought now to gain independent ownership of the prized cob.

GreeceNewsNY.com April 2017 23 Dixie chuckled to herself at the spectacle. Winning for any one bird seemed a dicey prospect but she was rooting for the gull that had the gray head and one gray wing. He seemed to have a more diplomatic approach to the quest for cob-dom. There was reasoning in his screeches and he did less jabbing. What a day it had been! Not only had the weather been perfect, bright and warm with cotton ball fluffs of cloud drifting across a magnificent blue sky, but she had spent the entire day at Mike’s side; useful, productive, creating beauty from plainness, soaking in nature’s wonders, reveling in sweetness, and embraced by love. And now she started to get nervous. Because things were so perfect. Because perfect was what she had been waiting for. Because the perfect day was the perfect time. Three weeks ago she had called her father to broach the subject of what she proposed to do. “Hey, Dad!” “Hi, Dixie! What’s up?” “Can I get your opinion on something?” “Sure. I’ve got plenty of opinions. Which one do you want?” And his response had been more than positive. “I say go for it! I think it’s a great idea. I’m with you one hundred percent. You’re your own woman, Dixie. Good for you!” But behind all his words of approval and encouragement, Dixie had felt like he wanted to laugh! She could picture him, trying not to grin and then, when he remembered that she couldn’t see him, letting that smile out, so big it almost fell off his face. And once he let the smile out, now he had to work at holding his laugh in. What would have made him have a reaction like that? It made no sense! Surely, she must have been imagining it. She was gazing off into the distance wondering about this curiosity when she realized Mike was asking her something. “So, do you want to, Dixie?” “Want to what?” “Go on the Merry-Go-Round!” “Okay! Yeah, let’s go! Sounds like fun!” Mike took her hand in his and they walked the path that led to the carousel. The perfect day, the perfect time and now the perfect place! Flittering flutters started to tumble about in Dixie’s stomach. Her heart began to pound. As they waited in line for the ride, Dixie rehearsed in her mind what she was going to say. She made a conscious effort to keep part of her mind attuned to Mike’s possible conversation but he was quiet, content just to stand by her side holding her hand and watching the horses, pigs, goats and rabbits go up and down, up and down and round and round. Normally, Dixie would be watching the carved and painted animals too, trying to decide which one was her favorite, the one she would make a mad dash for when it was her turn to ride. But today was a different kind of day. Round and round was good. Up and down did not fit her plan. This time she was going to suggest they sit together in one of the carriages instead. When the merry-go-round stopped and the line was moving forward to board, those words were just about to pop out of her mouth when Mike beat her to it! “Let’s sit in the carriage, Dixie.” And he rushed over to it, hoping no one else would get there before him.

And Then the Snow Storm Stella... Just a week after a record setting windstorm devastated the area bringing winds up to 81 mph, mother nature again showed her strength in the form of a snow storm with up to 31 inches of snow blanketing the Rochester area. Cleanup and power restoration from the windstorm was nearly

complete when the snow blew in. Rochester area schools, businesses and roads were closed and many found themselves once again house bound. Snow clean-up tested the stamina of area utility and maintenance workers, and of Photos by Karen Fien course homeowners.

After a blanket of snow further stressed tree limbs, tree trimming continued at this home on Beach Avenue.

The food was collected from neighborhoods in Greece and brought to the collection site by many volunteers. Over 50 volunteers worked hard to sort, box and put into pallets the donations. This site collected 150 boxes of food for the food shelves. This was just a small portion of the work that took place in the yearly Scouting for Food campaign. The Scouts also collected food at Maiden Lane Tops and collected 30 boxes of food. Many thanks to those that continued the tradition of delivering bags and door hangers even though they may have not had power at home. The food shelves were grateful for the donations that they got this year especially with having a higher need this year with the recent storms. Provided Information

Spring into Fitness by Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC Spring is a great time of year to assess your health and fitness. With the weather getting warmer, we tend to wear less clothing and spend more time outdoors being active. To increase your self-confidence, and improve your feeling of health and wellness follow these tips: •Schedule a Physical Examination: Annual physicals are an important assessment of your overall health. Often health issues creep up slowly on the inside and don’t manifest outward symptoms until it’s a bigger problem. An annual physical and blood work will help you stay on the preventative side of illness and maintain better wellness. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. •Purchase a new pair of running/workout sneakers: The average sneakers only maintain good arch support for up to 6 months. If the arches are worn down the foot support will be affected and this can cause pain to not only your feet but also your ankles and knees. If you are unsure of what type of athletic shoe to wear check with a specialty store that can assess your foot structure and running/walking gait. Based on your foot, gait and lifestyle they can prescribe the best type of shoe for you. •Clean out your pantry: During winter we often hibernate in our houses and hide behind loose layered clothing. to trim down your body fat start with your pantry. The pantry often houses some of the unhealthiest choices in your kitchen. Get rid of the sugary and starchy non-nutritional items like cookies, chips, cereals and breads… yes even those 100 calories packs. Remember whole foods are the best for your health and waist line. •Think “Farmers Market” for fun and healthy shopping: Lucky for us in Monroe County we have an abundance of farmers markets and farm stands to shop from. •Pump up your play list: If you are still listening to music from December do some spring cleaning and get some fresh new music to help keep you motivated during your workout. Research shows that music not only distracts you from the physical challenges of exercise but also helps you work harder. Finding music that uplifts your energy and helps get you in the zone can be a great benefit. •Sign up for an event: There is no better way to keep yourself motivated and accountable than committing to some type of an event. Committing to a charity walk, 5k, mud run or obstacle course really helps you have something to look forward to. This helps keep you motivated to condition and train. Enlist some of your friends and have fun with it. Visit http://www.active.com/ rochester-ny/running/5k to learn more about local events coming up this spring and summer.
