Bringing Comfort to Veterans

He felt it was something that the Legion should get involved in for the veterans at Unity Hospital,” Burns said. After brainstorming with members of his Legion family, a plan was developed to place a flag magnet on the room door of all veterans admitted to Unity Hospital in Greece. The Veterans Out reach helped source the flag magnets at a reasonable price, and the program is primarily funded by the Greece Legion Organiza tions. For approval to carry out the flag program at Unity, Burns pre Flag Program volunteers (L-R) Jim Donohoe, John Burns, Lisa Larkins and Ray Sciaratta.

pared a presentation for the Hospital Board and suggested nam ing the program after George Haines. “George was a volunteer at Unity for over 40 years, everyone at the hospital knew who George was. It was an easy approval process. Unfortunately, George passed away at the age of 95 on the exact day that the Board approved the Flag Program. It now is his legacy,” Burns said.In addition to Burns, the program coordinator, there are three other volunteer members of the group, Jim Donohoe, Lisa Lar kins, and Ray Sciaratta. Each member has an organized day and time at Unity. They visit with patients and present them with a letter from the Legion Post thanking them for their service, and sending well wishes for a quick recovery. “The program is a lot more than just presenting flags. Visiting the patients is a very important part of the process. Sometimes we are the only ones who visit them while they are in the hospital. It is important for them to know their Veteran Family is looking out for them,” Burns said. As of July 1, 2022 over 3,200 flags have been placed on the doors of veteran hospital patients at Unity through this pro gram.Ifyou are interested in helping to fund the Veteran’s Flag Pro gram, donations are accepted by mailing a check or money or der, made out to Greece American Legion Post #468, 344 Dorsey Road, Rochester, New York 14616. Say You Saw It In Greece News

Inspired by a local news story, The George Haines Veteran Flag Program began in August 2019. The driving force behind the pro gram is Navy veteran, and member of the American Legion Post #468, John Burns. “George Haines was a 95 year old World War II veteran. He saw a news story about an ICU nurse who placed flags on the doors of Veterans who were in the hospital. George called me up and asked, ‘What are we going to do about this?’

Rudbeckia fulgida is the most common species with large, lanceshaped basal leaves. It grows two to three feet in height and two feet in width. Cultivars include the very popular ‘Goldsturm,’ as well as ‘City Garden,’ and ‘Little Goldstar.’

Rudbeckia hirta is a short-lived perennial species that is treated as an annual. It does self-seed prolifically. The flowers are larger and have more variety in color than other Rudbeckia species.

by Kristina Gabalski

Cultivars include ‘Autumn Colors,’ ‘Cherokee Sunset,’ ‘Goldilocks,’ ‘Goldrush,’ ‘Prairie Sun,’ and ‘Rustic Colors.’ Varieties such as ‘Prairie Sun’ have bright yellow/greenish centers. Annual varieties of Rudbeckia make wonderful cut flowers.

Greece News August/September 2022 11

Annual varieties of Rudbeckia have a wider variety of colors and petal shapes than their perennial counterparts. All make great cut flowers, attract pollinators, and add interest to the mid-to-late summer garden. Photos by Kristina Gabalski. Its common names include Black-eyed Susan, Gloriosa Daisy, and Yellow Ox Eye. Whichever name you prefer, Rudbeckia light up the landscape in mid-to-late summer with their bright, golden blooms and dark centers. These perennials native to North America are hardy in Zones 4-9. They are members of the Asteraceae family and have erect stems with alternate, deeply lobed hairy leaves which can feel like sandpaper. The plants form clumps and produce colonies via rhizomes. The two- to three-inch diameter blooms have ray-like petals and a flat, dark eye center. Most Rudbeckia are perennials, but the R. hirta species is an annual. Other species which are commonly available are R. fulgida, R. grandiflora and R. triloba. Rudbeckia prefer full sun with more than six hours of direct sunlight a day, but will tolerate partial shade. The plant prefers evenly moist, well-drained soils, but is drought and heat tolerant once

Becauseestablished.ofitsupright growth, Rudbeckia is ideal for mass plantings and naturalized areas as well as in perennial beds. Strong stems mean it rarely needs staking. The flowers attract bees and butterflies and the seeds are relished by birds. Hover flies and other beneficial insects are also drawn to the showy blooms. Rudbeckia can be subject to several disease problems, although infrequently. These include powdery mildew, bacterial leaf spots, fungal leaf spots, stem rots, downy mildew, and fungal rusts.

Rudbeckia grandiflora is a rhizomatous perennial species native to the Eastern U.S. This species is huge, growing 39 to 47 inches in height and spreading 23 to 29 inches. The flowers are bright yellow and attract pollinators and beneficial insects.

If your Rudbeckia show signs of viral infection or phytoplasma diseases – which cause deformed flowers or leaves – it is best to remove and destroy the affected plant material. Aphids, caterpillars, and Japanese beetles can also damage Rudbeckia. Additionally, young leaves can be subject to slug and snail damage.

Clemson Cooperative Extension says that these pathogens are encouraged by excess moisture on the leaves caused by frequent rain or overhead irrigation. Cultural practices such as proper spacing, removal of dead plant material, and drip irrigation can reduce the risk of infection.

Rudbeckia triloba is native to eastern North America. It is a short-lived perennial that self-seeds easily and works well in naturalized areas. Bright yellow flowers have a black center and are great for including in native plantings. A related species, Rudbeckia laciniata is sometimes called the “Outhouse Plant.” Its large yellow flowers are whimsical and work well as cut flowers.

A stroll today, on the paths in Highland Park, is a journey along the original park pathways designed by Landscape Architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Experiencing the layout of Highland Park along these paths, within the original 19.63 acres of land do nated by George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry, is just as Olmsted planned in 1887, around every corner is a surprise and a unique view of the park.

Olmsted is known for his landscape work that takes into ac count the natural lay of the land. In Highland Park’s case, the park was build in the beautiful setting of hills and valleys created from a glacial moraine. The highest ground in the landscape pro vided an overlook with vistas of the Bristol Hills to the south, and to the north, Lake Ontario. Olmsted chose this highpoint for a three-story pavilion, where all paths in the park lead to. He believed in the reparative prop erties that being in nature affords, and the open air pavilion pro vided healthy, meditative views of nature, open and free for ev eryone. Shortly after its dedication in 1890, the pavilion became known as, The Children’s Pavilion. It served a grand purpose for 73 years until in 1963, the deteriorating state of the building led to its demolition. In March of 2022, the Monroe County Legisla ture authorized full funding for the rebuilding of the pavilion, in the original location, with a projected ground breaking in 2023, Photos by Karen Fien

Olmsted’s Highland Park

by Barbara Burke “What artist, so noble, has often been thought, as he, who with far-reaching conception of beauty and designing power, sketches the outline, writes the colors, and directs the shadows of a picture so great that Nature shall be employed upon it for generations, before the work he has arranged for her shall realize his intentions.”

Milli Piccione, is a Highland Park Conservancy Board Member and gardener from birth. “I grew up on a dairy farm north of Churchville and was crawling around in the dirt at four years old. I didn’t realize how much I loved gardening until I was an adult. My mother came here from England when she was 19 years old. She had a strict upbringing with specifics about what is proper. She never batted an eye, or gave me a lecture, when growing up I came in covered from head to toe in dirt. I have her to thank for nurturing that in me,” Milli said. Mili’s interest in historic public gardens started with volunteer ing for the Landmark Society in the mid 80s. She has been coor dinating the rehabilitation of the Warner Castle Estate Gardens at Highland Park since 2012, and chairs the Highland Park Con servancy Garden Volunteer initiative.

The Warner Castle residence was build in 1854. A portion of the Warner Estate was donated to the Park in 1907 and the residence and adjoining gardens were purchased by the City of Rochester in 1951. “The gardens go back to the 1920s. Using his toric information and guidelines, volunteers have been working on their restoration. The beds are laid out just as they were. The gardens were used as horticultural testing grounds, and contain all that you would find in a home garden. The borders are mature and we are bringing the rock garden back to life. All the volun teer work is being coordinated with the County Parks staff,” Milli said.Highland Park offers unique volunteer opportunities for gar deners with any skill level. “We call our volunteers park stew ards. They are from all facets of the community. Our stewards learn what it takes to manage a space like this, they love working in this beautiful, historic park. It is exciting and satisfying work. They come here, work diligently, go home happy and return be cause of their love of the work. Many very knowledgeable peo ple volunteer their time, and there is always a great exchange of information,” Milli said. For more information on Highland Park volunteer opportuni ties visit www.highlandparkconservancy.org/

Park is best known for lilacs, and the annual Lilac Festival held each May. The lilacs are only one aspect of what the park has to offer. According to the City of Rochester Park’s website, “In addition to over 1200 lilac shrubs, the park boasts a Japanese Maple collection, 35 varieties of sweet-smelling magnolias, a barberry collection, a rock garden with dwarf ever greens, 700 varieties of rhododendron, azaleas, mountain laurel and andromeda, horse chestnuts, spring bulbs and wildflowers and a large number of exotic trees. The park’s pansy bed features 10,000 plants, designed into an oval floral “carpet” with a new pattern each year. An iris garden given as a gift from sister city Hamamatsu, Japan, adds to the impressive landscape.” Designed as an arboretum, Highland Park has many non-native species of trees, with historic, 130 year-old legacy trees to experience.

Other points of interest within Highland Park include the Lamberton Conservatory, Warner Castle & Estate Gardens, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Frederick Douglass Memorial Pla za, Poet’s Garden and Highland Bowl. For more information on Highland Park www.monroecounty.gov/parks-highland
