Something for everyone at Brockport Arts Festival Looking for some family fun in August? Visit the Village of Brockport on August 12 and 13 and you’ll find a festival with fun for all. The Brockport Arts Festival will take place in the Village of Brockport on Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13, each day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. There’s a host of events and activities planned to please people of all ages, including a juried arts and crafts show, children’s events, a canal event, a farmer’s market, a wine tent and entertainment for all. Over 100 artists and exhibitors are expected to turn out for the Brockport Arts Festival. These artisans will be located on both sides of Main Street in the village. Exhibitors will display their goods daily on August 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. New this year to the festival is a vendor called Yogibo. This merchant sells furniture that is described as family friendly and looks much like beanbag chairs of the 70s. What would a festival be without great food? Art Appleby, BAF Chairperson, promises a full menu of food offerings that will appeal to anyone. “We’ll have pizza, hot dogs, Italian sausage, kettle corn, fried dough, cotton candy, fresh lemonade and more,” Appleby said. There’s a full slate of activities planned for this year’s BAF. At noon, a kids’ bike rodeo will follow at the same location. This event is sponsored by Walk! Bike! Brockport! Free bike helmets will be offered while supplies last. The Brockport Police Department will hold car seat safety checks at 1 p.m. on Market Street along with a K-9 demonstration at 2 p.m. Lift Bridge Book Store has a book-signing event planned with a number of local authors beginning each day at 10:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the festival weekend. Check out more information at liftbridgebooks.com. Parking in the Village of Brockport during the Brockport Arts Festival can be a challenge. Shuttle buses will run each day from the Sweden Clarkson Recreation Center to the BAF site and will run approximately every 15 minutes. The center is located at 4927 Lake Road South, Brockport and plenty of free parking is available. This shuttle service is free of charge and will be operated with buses and drivers from Brockport Central School District. The buses will drop off and pick up at College and Main Street and also at the parking lot east of the Stoneyard Breakfast Company on Clinton Street. Are you a wine connoisseur or someone who appreciates the fruit of the vine? Stop in to the BAF Wine Tent on either Saturday or Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and try tastings from five New York state wineries. Entry to the tent costs $5 per person and those 21 years of age or older will be admitted. The wineries include Gust of Sun, Lakeland Winery, Mayer’s Lake Ontario Winery and Victorianbourg Wine

Provided photos. Estate. Along with their free tastings, each winery will offer bottles and cases of wine for purchase. If your little one needs a break from the festival crowds, visit the family respite center at Brockport United Methodist Church located at Main and Erie Streets. This center will be open daily from 10 until 5 p.m. throughout the festival weekend. Calling all antique car owners. A vintage car cruise-in is set for Sunday, August 13 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Main and College Streets. No registration is necessary, so polish up your classic car and drive out to meet up with other car buffs. A farmer’s market on Sunday, August 13 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. will highlight local growers and their products. Look for this farm market on Market Street. Support your local food growers and buy some of your favorite fresh fruits and vegetables. The historic Morgan Manning House will be open for tours on Sunday, August 13 from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Visit this landmark home that was built in 1854 and learn about how its original owners contributed to the development of modern day farming. A full schedule of local and regional entertainment is planned for this year’s Brockport Arts Festival. Stages will be set up outdoors at the Morgan Manning House, located on Main Street in Brockport; at Sagawa Park, located at the corner of Erie and Main Streets; and at the intersection of Water and Main Streets. Look for a full listing of activities and entertainers as well as times, locations and dates in this publication, visit the BAF website at brockportartsfestival.com or check out the Brockport Arts Festival on Facebook. by Maggie Fitzgibbon for Brockport Arts Festival

Brockport Arts Festival showcases area and regional artists This year’s arts and crafts portion of the Brockport Arts Festival will be a juried show. The arts and crafts vendors include a variety of artists who will offer different creations such as jewelry, glass, mixed media, painting, sculpture, photography, wood and much more. Well-known folk artist and Brockport resident Helen Smagorinsky coordinates the arts and crafts show along with fellow Brockport resident Alicia Fink. Over the last few months, they have considered all artists’ applications to ensure a balance of entries in the art categories. “We reviewed all the applications from the last two years to see what categories could be expanded to satisfy all festival goers interests,” Smagorinsky said. “We hope people will shop and remember, it’s not too early to think about Christmas shopping.”

New this year to the Brockport Arts Festival is the Suburban Rochester Artist Group (SRAG). This consortium of artists has been in existence for over 50 years and it meets monthly at the Greece Town Hall on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. The group is made up of 45 artists who share the love of painting in all mediums, including watercolor, oil, acrylic and pastels. SRAG member Peggy Piscitello noted how the group is always looking for new venues to showcase and sell their work. “We know that the Brockport Arts Festival is well-attended so we wanted to test the waters. Eight of our artists will exhibit their work,” Piscitello said. Westside News Inc.

Congratulations to the Brockport arts Festival committee on another great community event! from your

hometown newspapers Provided photos.

The Duck Derby tradition continues Come out to the Brockport Arts Festival (BAF) on Sunday, August 13 and you will see thousands of small ducks take a dive into the Erie Canal. This annual event called the Duck Derby is the main fundraiser for the festival and is set for 3:30 p.m. Duck Derby tickets may be purchased before the BAF from members of the Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis and Towpath Lodge Association. During the festival, duck tickets can be purchased at the Duck Derby tent, which will be located in front of the Strand Theater. Duck tickets cost $5 for a single lonely duck ticket, a quack pack of five tickets cost $20 plus one free ticket and a flock of 35 duck tickets cost $100 and comes with an additional 15 free tickets. Dave Arnold, treasurer for BISCO and president of the Towpath Lodge Association, coordinates this year’s Duck Derby. “The Duck Derby is a long-standing and important part of the annual Brockport Arts Festival. Once again, the race will be at the Main Street Bridge where up to

10,000 brightly-colored plastic ducks will be launched into the canal on Sunday, August 13 at 3:30 p.m,” Arnold explained. “The race will comply with New York State Gaming Commission regulations. Prizes will be awarded to purchasers of tickets corresponding to the first 11 and last 11 ducks that cross the finish line.” Over $6,500 in gift cards, prizes and cash will be awarded at this year’s Duck Derby. The Brockport Wegmans is the major sponsor of this year’s Duck Derby and will provide $2,500 in prizes. In addition to the Wegmans gift cards, prizes include gas cards, cash, an adult fitness membership to Sweden/ Clarkson Recreation Center and the SERC at The College at Brockport, signed framed artwork from 1895 Main Street and a signed framed print from Helen Smagorinsky. So buy a duck, a quack pack or even a flock, find your seat on the banks of the Erie Canal, and watch to see if your duck is a big winner as it floats across the finish line. by Maggie Fitzgibbon for Brockport Arts Festival

BISCO - a community organization supporting Brockport BISCO, the sponsor for Brockport Arts Festival, stands for the Brockport Integrated Service Club Organization. This 501c3 non-profit community organization’s primary goal is to support programs and projects that benefit children who live in the Brockport – Sweden area. BISCO is made up of a variety of community groups including Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Elks, Towpath Lodge, as well as members from other civic groups. Each year, BISCO supports a number of community projects and programs with the proceeds from the Brockport Arts Festival. Art Appleby, Chairman of the Brockport Arts Festival (BAF), explains some community projects that the BAF contributed toward last year. “BISCO provided matching funds to the Brockport Rowing Club to build a boathouse and dock, and Towpath Lodge

received funds to build a lodge for the Boy Scouts. Camp Abilities, a camp for children with visual impairments, received BISCO funds to purchase a three-hole disc golf course and BISCO funded a new swing set at Corbett Park,” Appleby explained. BISCO and the Brockport Arts Festival are always in need of volunteers. Appleby noted there are many ways to help. “BISCO organizes the Brockport Arts Festival, so we can always use help with many event details and festival projects. The festival is in need of dozens of volunteers to assist in many ways like assisting vendors with set-up to manning the BAF information booth,” he said.
