2 Spencerport Canal Days
Westside News Inc.
July 19, 2015
Canal Days Car Show celebrates 25 years The Spencerport Canal Days Car Show is one of the best in the region and that is because, after 25 years, organizers know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to judging, parking, transportation and awards. The show will be held Saturday, July 25 at the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330 at 691 Trimmer Rd., Spencerport rain or shine. A shuttle bus pick up and drop off from Terry Taylor Elementary School , 399 Ogden Parma Townline Rd., will run about every 20 minutes. The day begins with a full breakfast available for purchase from 8 – 11 a.m. inside the Legion. Registration is open from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and is $15 per car with no refunds. The first 100 registrants receive a goody bag and the first 200 receive a dash plaque. “We’ve been doing the show for 25 years and have found that using a panel of five or six judges is the most
fair,” said John Krywy, who has been involved with the show for the past 13 years ever since he retired and his wife, Pat, suggested that he volunteer in the community. “When the show was peer judged, some people would vote for their friends or turn in their ballots early.” Cars are judged on a point system on criteria such as cleanliness, paint and engine condition. A Best of Show, the top 50 and 18 specialty trophies are awarded. “They are good-sized, engraved trophies. In fact, the Best of Show trophy is about two feet tall,” said Krywy. “We want to give out nice awards because we know that people put a lot of time into their cars.” The award winners will be announced at 3 p.m. Door prizes, including Castle car products, and Kay Jewelers and Carmine’s Pizza gift certificates, will be awarded throughout the day and a
Best of Show award winner from the 2014 Spencerport Canal Days Car Show.
50/50 raffle will be announced at the end of the show. For lunch, Barton’s Parkside Hots will have a variety of sandwiches, beverages and ice cream available for purchase. This year’s entertainment is once again provided by DJ Mike Vickers from Legends 102.7. “He’s a real favorite
with the car show people,” said Krywy. The Canal Days Show draws as many as 300 cars that have ranged from 1919 to the present with many from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, and is free to the public. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

The first Spencerport Canal Days Wine Tasting featured in the festival last year was so successful that the committee decided to expand the offering this year. “It’s something we believe a lot of people are interested in and makes sense since Spencerport is smack dab in between two wine trails,” said Greg Schweers, who organizes the event with the help of his wife, Denise. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase the wineries from all over our region.” The featured New York wineries will include: A Gust of Sun Winery from Ransomville (with an outlet on Ridge Road West), Americana Vineyards and Winery from Interlaken, Deer Run Winery from Geneseo, The Winery at Marjim Manor from Appleton, Thousand Islands Winery from Alexandria Bay, and Victorianbourg Wine Estate from Wilson. The Schweers explained that wine, as a custom-crafted product, fits in well with Spencerport Canal Days. “Our local wineries are small businesses and Canal Days is a chance for them to showcase their products in this community; and they have great products,” said Schweers. The Wine Tasting Tent will be located in the Spencerport Firemen’s Field and will be open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. Adjacent to the Wine Tasting Tent will be a Farm Market featuring fresh summer produce from H.A. Maier Farms of Spencerport. Festival-goers
can pick up corn, cucumbers, squash, cabbage, tomatoes and more brought in right from the fields. “Spencerport always was and is a farming community, so it makes sense that we would include a farm market as part of Canal Days,” said Denise Schweers. There is no need to worry about hauling your wine and vegetable purchases around while enjoying the rest of what Canal Days has to offer. Volunteers will be happy to store your purchases for pick up throughout both days of the festival. Pat Everett, who reached out to H.A. Maier Farms, said she’s excited to have them as a first time vendor at Canal Days. “It’s a very busy time of year for farmers, but I’m hoping to get even more agribusinesses involved next year,” she said. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

The Spencerport Canal Days were started as a way to show off the community, introduce the community to visitors, support local businesses and be a fun festival for the public. Thirty-four years later the festival is still going strong thanks to a large group of volunteers. “Without our volunteers and local businesses supporting us, we wouldn’t have Canal Days,” said Ginny Swarthout, Canal Days chair and owner of The Unique in Spencerport village. “Our expenses total $42,000 so it takes a lot of effort on the part of many to make it all happen.” Well over 100 volunteers, many of whom become involved through word of mouth, have been involved in Canal Days for years. Volunteer Gail McQuilkin, age 79, has to work extra hard to find people to staff the information booths. “Ideally, I like to have three people per shift, but it’s hard to get them to commit, especially when it’s hot,” she said. The booths are set up near the Gazebo and on South Union St. near the Unique Shop at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Shifts are from 8:30 – 10 a.m., 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., 1 – 3 p.m. and 3 – 5 p.m. Volunteers at the Information Booths answer questions about shuttle buses, activities throughout the event and give out
general information as needed. They can also promote and sell Canaligator Race tickets. Other volunteer jobs include planning, setting up and tearing down, parking and registering cars at the Car Show, being a host on the shuttle buses, taking photos and soliciting donations from businesses. “The Ogden Auxiliary Police work both days directing traffic in the hot sun every year and not many people know that they are also volunteers,” said Swarthout. At the Canaligator Race, Spencerport firemen have their rescue boat in the water, and firemen in and out of the water at the ready just in case. And of course, they make the Firemen’s Field available for Canal Days every year. Later in the summer, Swarthout and even more volunteers organize a volunteer picnic to thank everyone for their time. They send each and every volunteer an invitation whether they devoted an hour of their time or many hours. “There really is a community spirit here in Spencerport that you don’t find in other places,” said Swarthout. “This really is someplace special.” by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Entertainers bring something for everyone to the Canal Days festival site If you’re coming to the Spencerport Canal Days to enjoy some top-notch entertainment, you won’t be disappointed. The band Shine will get the party started on Friday night, July 24, at the Union St. stage. This sevenmember band plays an incredible selection of music from the ‘60s through today. On Saturday, at the Gazebo Stage, the Michael Sherman Two Tone Jazz Duo will pay tribute to famous jazz musicians, like Coleman Hawkins, Richard Rogers, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, by playing all of their music, in their style with their sound from 10:30 a.m. to noon. They are followed by dancers from MGOS Academy of Irish Dance from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The last performance at the Gazebo on Saturday is the band 8-Days-A-Week, which - you guessed it - will bring back many of The Beatles’ songs and memories from the ‘60s. Saturday’s line up for the Union Street Stage opens with students from Spencerport’s own Dori’s Music Studio from 10:30-11:30 a.m. From 12-1:30 p.m., The Firebirds, a five-piece rock band playing the best music of the ‘50s and ‘60s, will take the stage. They are followed by the Flying Sideburns, who will bring rock, blues, R & B, and even some rockabilly to the stage from 2:30 to 4 p.m. There is a demonstration by The Victors Gymnastics on Saturday and Master Lim’s Taekwondo Academy on Sunday, both at the Firemen’s Field beginning at noon. Sunday’s entertainment on the Gaze-

bo Stage will open with the Apen Family Band from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Based in Buffalo, this band began performing publicly in 2010, bringing their upbeat brand of bluegrass, folk and country music to area coffee shops, charitable organizations and nursing homes. A close-knit family of seven, the Apen Family performs a wide repertoire of traditional American music, all accompanied by acoustic instruments like the banjo, guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. Next up on the Gazebo Stage are The Coupe De’ Villes from 1-2:30 p.m. Commonly known by their fans as The Coupes, the seven-piece band is celebrating their 30th year and has recently added horns to their unique blend of blues, funk, and classic rock music. WARM 101.3’s Tony Infantino brings his band, Keys to the Caddy, to the Gazebo from 3 to 4:30 p.m. They play everything from the Beatles, Doobie Brothers and Kenny Loggins to Santana, Toby Kieth and just about anything else you can dance to. Also on Sunday, the Union St. Stage will feature the Spencerport High School Band from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Melito and Friends close out the festival on Union St. featuring Mike Melito, jazz drummer, with Gabe Condon on guitar, Mike DiMartino on trumpet and Danny Ziemann on bass. One of the most sought after jazz drummers and teachers in upstate NY for over 25 years, Melito and his friends will play from 1:30 to 3 p.m. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

8 Spencerport Canal Days
Westside News Inc.
July 19, 2015
Artisan welder brings his craft to Spencerport Canal Days Spencerport Canal Days will be showcasing the work of over 40 local crafters and artisans this year. At least one of them is fairly new to the craft scene. Steven Foster will be selling welded art pieces with a twist. They are made from leftover steel that comes from his partner Tim Adams’ welding shop. Located in Stafford, NY, Adams Welding and Fabrication relocated four years ago to a brand new shop on Route 5. Adams makes and repairs farm equipment and commercial products, and is unique in that he offers portable custom welding. When the
Genesee County Chamber of Commerce named Adams a 2014 Geneseean of the Year, he made connections with other businesses, one of which suggested that the shop use the scrap pieces to create art. That is where Foster came in. “Tim studied to be a welder in college, but I’m pretty much self-taught,” said Foster. For the past year, he has focused on the artistic portion of the business. Using leftover steel from commercial jobs, old truck parts and horseshoes, some of which are given to him by local Mennonites, Foster creates wine holders, garden flow-

Foster takes the leftover pieces of grating from the pens and creates “rustic stars” that have been one of his biggest sellers. Wendy Dandrea, a member of the Canal Day Committee, saw Foster’s work at the Lilac Festival this year and liked it so much that she asked him if he’d be interested in participating in Canal Days. In between working hours
at his other job, server manager at the Red Osier Restaurant, Foster had built up enough of an inventory that he agreed. “Besides the Lilac Festival, we’ve sold at a ‘vendor blender’ in Leroy, the Batavia farm market and a horse show at the Genesee Fair Grounds,” said Foster. Look for Adams Welding Metal Art both days of the Spencerport Canal Days at the Firemen’s Field. Check out the Canal Days site map in the special section delivered with Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald newspapers this week. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee
Food truck rodeo offers tasty options to Canal Days visitors This year’s Spencerport Canal Days will offer plenty of options for the hungry festival-goer thanks to a mini food truck rodeo that will line up at the main entrance to the Firemen’s Field. Look for Wraps on Wheels featuring a variety of wraps and fries, and Cheesed and Confused with custom cheese sandwiches, like the apple, bacon and cheddar, and the spinach and goat cheese. They even have a cheese dessert with Brie, strawberries and chocolate on a waffle.
Chefs Catering will be serving up chicken avocado sliders and pulled pork sliders, along with the Meatball Chef’s Plate. KMC Food Enterprises will offer different types of macaroni and cheese. And last but not least, Rock City Sandwich will have chicken bacon ranch, chicken Caesar and buffalo chicken sandwiches on their menu. Other food offerings include fair favorites, such as fried dough, fresh squeezed lemonade, corn dogs, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks,
Kettle Korn and Red Osier roast beef sandwiches. As most Canal Days visitors know, local organizations like the Spencerport Kiwanis Club and Spencerport Lions Club have a variety of tasty menu items and money from the sale of these items goes right back into the community. The Spencerport Fire Department will be selling chicken and steak sandwiches, salt potatoes, hot dogs and hamburgers to raise money for two scholarships for Spencerport High
School graduates. And for those who prefer a hearty breakfast, the Masonic Temple will be offering an all-youcan-eat breakfast both Saturday and Sunday from 8 - 11 a.m. to raise money for their community projects. “Everyone pitches in and helps each other in this community,” said Ginny Swarthout, Canal Days chair. “It’s a good thing.” by Grace Griffee for Canal Days Committee

Sponsors are listed on the Canal Days website and can have a website link, advertising in the Suburban News/Hamlin-Clarkson Herald Spencerport Canal Days insert, and a certificate of support to display in their place of business. “It takes a lot of effort on the part of many to make Canal Days happen,” said Swarthout. “This event would not be possible without the funds donated by our local businesses.” Other businesses choose to participate as commercial vendors. Some of this year’s vendors include Bathfitters, DISH Network, High Performance Heating and Cooling, KR Communications, Leaf Filter, Liberty Mutual, Rochester Athletic Club, Renewal by Anderson, Rochester Patio and Landscape, Softub Express and Upstate Internet.Net. The Spencerport Canal Days are a great opportunity for local businesses to showcase their offerings and let people know, near and far, what the Spencerport/Ogden area has to offer. That is why Canal Days also includes a Sidewalk Sale. Several downtown businesses participate, including Grandpa Sam’s Italian Restaurant, Texas Bar-B-Q Joint, J. William Jewelers, Café Macchiato, McColley’s Irish Pub, the Unique Shop and philoSophie’s stationery and gifts, among others. “The community has done a lot for us,” said Grandpa Sam’s owner Alba Alonci. “Canal Days is an opportunity for us to give back.” Alonci also serves on the Canal Days Committee helping out with the Canaligator Race. She praised fellow business owner Ginny Swarthout, who serves as committee chairperson. “We’re so pleased to have Ginny as our chairperson,” said Alonci. “She does an amazing job pulling everything together.” The committee sends out a solicitation letter to encourage local businesses to become Canal Days sponsors in order to help defray the $42,000 yearly expense

Take a shuttle bus to Canal Days, get a history lesson Why fight the traffic and spend time hunting for a parking spot when you can ride in comfort and learn something too? Spencerport Canal Days will be offering shuttle bus service from the north side of the canal picking up and dropping off at Terry Taylor Elementary School, 399 Ogden Parma Townline Rd., and at the pavilion on the northeast side of the canal on Canal Street; and from the south side at Spencerport High School, 2707 Spencerport Rd., and Subway restaurant in the village. Buses run in 20-minute rotations and the buses transporting from the north side also stop at the Spencerport Canal Days Car Show at the American Legion Post 330, 691 Trimmer Rd., on Saturday only. So how can a bus ride be educational? Pat Everett organizes a group of volunteer hosts who ride the buses in two-hour shifts throughout Canal Days. These hosts are not only well-versed in where to find restrooms, food and whatever else a festival-goer may need, but know quite a bit about the history of the Spencerport area as well. “They talk about why we celebrate the Erie Canal and why Spencerport wouldn’t be Spencerport without the canal,” said Everett. The hosts also enjoy getting to know passengers and soliciting their feedback about their Canal Days experi-
ence. “We have people come from all over to attend Canal Days,” said Everett. “We even had a couple from Australia who did an internet search when they were in the area because they wanted to learn more about the canal, and that’s where they learned about Canal Days.” Everett, who started out as a host, said people return year after year to volunteer because it’s such a fun job. “We’ve had local dignitaries, business owners, even a teenage girl who volunteered with her grandmother and now hosts on her own,” said Everett. Since the shuttle buses are school buses, some parents also use them as an opportunity to introduce their soonto-be kindergartner to the experience of riding a school bus. To take the shuttle from south of Spencerport, come up South Union St. (Route 259) heading north towards the Village and take a right on Lyell Ave. Proceed one mile to the High School parking lot. To take the shuttle from north of Spencerport, buses will run from the Terry Taylor Elementary School at the corner of Ogden Parma Town Line Road and Route 259 (Union Street). There is plenty of parking at both locations. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Canaligator Race means big prizes for the fastest…and slowest gators Where else but Spencerport can you see 1,000 rubber alligators launched off a bridge into the Erie Canal? This year’s Canaligator Race is the culminating event at Spencerport Canal Days and will take place on Sunday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. at the canal bridge. It is easy to join in the fun. Gator tickets are currently being sold at the Unique Shop, 130 South Union St., and at the Ogden Senior Center, 200 South Union St., during the Friday night kickoff celebration and at the Information Booths located on South Union St. near the Texas Bar-B-Q Joint and at the Firemen’s Field during Canal Days. For $5 each or five for $20, participants will receive tickets and their gators will be put into a bin until the race. For the race, all of the gators from the three locations are mixed together and launched into the canal at once by local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. The first five gators and the last five gators to cross the finish line are the winners. This year’s prizes are bigger and better than ever, and include: $500, $300 and $200 Wegmans gift certificates, LeGault Limousine Wine Tour for eight people valued at $500, Redline BMX bike from Sugar’s Bike Shop valued at $300, $200 gift certificates from Tops and J. William Jewelers, 18 holes of golf at Buttonwood Golf Course, an overnight stay at Adams Basin Inn Bed and Breakfast, and a Spencerport Dining Passport valued at $450. “Every year we try to get prizes that we know the public will really want,” said Alba Alonci, who has been helping to organize the race since 2007. “Our committee has worked really hard to get donations and have purchased some prizes as well.”
Proceeds from the Canaligator Race have benefited the community and many organizations over the years. Past donations have included the purchase of bike racks, park benches and picnic tables for the Village of Spencerport and Town of Ogden, as well as contributions to the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf, Spencerport Fire Department, Aurora House hospice, and Eagle Star Housing for veterans. “We vote as a committee on where the proceeds will go,” said Alonci. “This year we are hoping to do something in memory of our former mayor, Joyce Lobene.” Look for Ally, the Canaligator, who will be advertising the race beginning Friday night and both days of the festival. He even has his own Facebook page! by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee
