Spencerport

Ogden Dental Group Welcomes

Zach Mills, DMD

Pediatric Dentist   Zachary Mills, DMD is a native to the Rochester area. In 2007, Dr. Zach graduated from Brockport High School, and went on to pursue a biology major at St. John Fisher College. Go Cardinals! Upon attaining his bachelor of science degree in 2011, Dr. Zach moved to Pittsburgh, PA  where he would live for the next four years, studying and training to become a dentist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Go Panthers!   While living away from the Rochester area, Dr. Zach was fortunate enough to meet many amazing people, as well as experience and try so many new things. Dr. Zach says that living in Pittsburgh most definitely broadened his horizons, but it also deepened his appreciation for that feeling of ”home”, which he claims he only gets when he sees Exit 45 on the NYS Thruway.   After graduating with highest honors (OKU) from dental school in 2015, Dr. Zach was thrilled to be heading back home to complete the last leg of his education in Rochester. On June 30th, 2017, Dr. Zach graduated from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester, where he received an advanced degree of training in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Zach says that becoming a Pediatric Dentist has always been a lifelong goal of his, and that he feels super excited and extremely blessed that he gets to start his career in Spencerport, NY at Ogden Dental Group.   On a personal level, Dr. Zach says that he loves golfing, hiking and being outdoors. He also enjoys spending time with his family, especially his fiancé Ashley (who is an optometrist at Towne and Country Eyecare in Spencerport) and their 8 month old puppy named Denver. Dr. Zach says that he can’t wait to start treating kids of all ages in his community and surrounding areas, and encourages you to set up an appointment with him today!

Shuttle bus, children’s area are changes to Canal Days Visitors to this year’s Spencerport Canal Days will see a couple of changes. Instead of having two pick up and drop off locations for shuttle buses, all buses will be leaving and returning to the Spencerport High School parking lot due to capital project construction at Terry Taylor Elementary School. The shuttles will drop off passengers in front of Key Bank on Union Street in the Village of Spencerport and run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days. On Saturday, shuttles will also pick up and drop off at the American Legion on Trimmer Road for the Car Show from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Handicap accessible buses will be available. Another change to this year’s Canal Days is the children’s area. Instead of having rides, the area will feature Spencerport school bus tours and a Children’s Craft Cabana for ages 2-12 years from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The crafts, which will include sand art, a sticker project and flower pot project among others, will be free or available for a nominal fee or donation. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Becky Bellanca, who worked as a long term substitute enrichment specialist at Bernabi Elementary School this year, was asked by fellow teacher Dori Swarthout and Canal Days Chairperson Ginny Swarthout if she would be interested in heading up a craft tent for children and she jumped at the idea. “I’m a crafter and have two children myself – a daughter age eight and son age five,” she said. Bellanca welcomes the help of volunteers. Those interested may contact Ginny Swarthout at Spencerportcanaldays35@ gmail.com or 352-1350.

Provided photos. Stop by Spencerport Insurance at 177 South Union Street for more children’s activities that include balloon twisting and kids’ temporary tattoos. And be sure to visit the Spencerport FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team demonstration in the Firemen’s Field both days from 10 a.m. to about 5 p.m. The FTC team is one of the teams in the Spencerport FIRST Program and includes eighth and ninth grade students. The robots were used in their last two competition years and are constrained to fit in a volume of 18”x18”x18. Visitors will have a chance to drive, while students talk about how FIRST is enriching their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). by Grace Griffee for the Canals Day Committee

Spencerport Canal Days Car Show features over 300 of area’s best Car enthusiasts from all around flock to the Spencerport Canal Days Car Show to see over 300 of the area’s best cars and to visit with their owners who have made their vehicles a labor of love. In its 27th year, this year’s show takes place Saturday, July 29 at the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330 at 691 Trimmer Road. Shuttle buses will run from Spencerport High School throughout the show. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 12 noon with a fee of $15 after July 24 and no refunds. The first 200 registrants receive a dash plaque and there are plenty of door prizes. Awards are presented at 3 p.m. with Mike Vickers from Legends 102.7 providing music for the fun, family-oriented show. As in past years, breakfast is available from 8 to 11 a.m. inside the American Legion and Barton’s Parkside Hots will be on hand for lunch beginning at 11 a.m. until the end of the show. John Krywy, who has volunteered since 2004 and been in charge of organizing the show since 2011, said he loves meeting the people while putting everything together and the day of the show. “It’s not like work; it’s fun – like a homecoming,” he said.

Best in Show winner from the 2016 Car Show. Cars, which generally range from the early 1900s through the present, are judged by a panel using a point system based on criteria such as cleanliness, paint and engine condition. A Best of Show, the top 50 and 18 specialty trophies are awarded. Last year’s Best of Show was awarded to Steve Bicker for his 1970 Olds Vista Cruiser Wagon. Last year’s show had 331 cars registered – the largest number since Krywy’s been in charge. “I’m hoping for 350 cars this year,” he said. “Come one, come all and enjoy the cars!” by Grace Griffee for the Canals Day Committee

Canal Day Committee is always looking for volunteers The Spencerport Canal Days Committee is a hard working group dedicated to its mission of showcasing the community, introducing the community to visitors, supporting local businesses and having a fun festival for the public. The Committee welcomes new members and volunteers. “We are truly blessed because we always come up with wonderful volunteers,” said Ginny Swarthout, chairperson. “We frequently ask people

to participate and sometimes hear they’d love to volunteer, but had never been asked before. That is music to our ears because many hands make light work. If you only have an hour to spare, we’ll take it.” Those interested in volunteering for this or next year’s Spencerport Canal Days may contact Swarthout at Spencerportcanaldays35@ gmail.com or 352-1350. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Spencerport Canal Days stays true to its mission giving back to the community Spencerport Canal Days, in its 36th year, isn’t just an opportunity for area crafters, musicians and food vendors to take part in a two-day festival that draws thousands. It’s an opportunity for area community organizations to raise funds for their worthwhile projects and let visitors know what they’re all about. Spencerport Kiwanis Club sells popcorn, soda and water, hot dogs and bags of chips. A $5 meal deal includes chips, hot dog and a drink. Proceeds from the sales go to several different community organizations, such as Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Epilepsy Foundation, Trail of Hope, Cameron Community Ministries, Spencerport High School Scholarships and many more. “It is important for Kiwanis to participate in an event like Canal Days because it’s a way of giving back to the community,” said Kristen Smith, past president and secretary. “The mission of Kiwanis is to serve the children of the world, which begins at home in our local community. We strive to be a positive role model for not only the youth, but other members of the community.” She also pointed out that the Kiwanis Club is always looking for new members who are interested in giving back as well. The Spencerport Lions Club will have Italian sausage with peppers and onions, along with beverages for sale. The Lions have participated in Canal Days since the beginning. “The exposure – being in front of and interacting with the community, and letting them know we are there to help – that is what keeps us coming back every year,” said Mike Nau, secretary/treasurer. And help they do. The Lions Club operates a medical loan closet; sponsors youth sports, students of the month/year and

The Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department has about 20 volunteers on hand for a huge chicken barbecue that helps raise funds for many initiatives throughout the year. “We’re a 100 percent volunteer organization and we do much more than firefighting. We’re here for the community,” said Mike Lobene, Spencerport Fire Department past president and current president of the Spencerport Volunteer Fire Exempts. For example, the department participates in the DWI demonstration at Spencerport High School and teaches fire prevention, provides family services for its members, loans out its facilities to community groups, and for Canal Days helps out with the Canaligator Race and provides the use of their grounds. In addition to offering community groups a fundraising opportunity, many groups roll up their sleeves to make Canal Days possible. The Village of Spencerport Department of Public Works gets the village ready for the event, sweeping the streets, providing dumpsters for garbage, along with posting signs, putting up barricades, etc. The Village Electric Department provides electric service. Both departments are on standby in case they are needed. The Ogden Police Department and Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance are on hand and Spencerport Rotary members keep all areas clean of trash. Spencerport School District provides school buses for shuttles. Local businesses donate funds to help finance the event. And over 100 community members volunteer throughout the event. The Canal Days Committee donates any profits back to area organizations. “We enjoy helping organizations that don’t have the funds they need to do the projects they want,” said Chairperson Ginny Swarthout. “It’s something we feel good about.” by Grace Griffee for the Canals Day Committee

Late artist’s works to be featured at Spencerport Canal Days Those who attended Spencerport Canal Days many years ago may remember the work of local artist Dianne Dengel. Her paintings are of people with joyful faces in everyday settings during simpler times. Dengel passed in 2012, but her brother, Donald Dengel, is keeping her memory alive by once again having her artwork available for sale at Spencerport Canal Days. Raised in Chili in a home of limited means, Dengel would practice her art on pieces of cardboard that her mother, Mildred, would bring home from her job at Edwards, a department store. Since she couldn’t afford brushes, Dengel would paint with her fingertips and rolled bits of paper. As she grew older, Dengel’s inspiration for her art was that of Maud Bogart, mother of Humphrey Bogart, who lived in Rochester. Never marrying or having children, she took her artwork on the road exhibiting at local festivals as well as around the U.S. Her mother accompanied her on her trips and was Dengel’s biggest supporter. Dengel would also create dolls to sell in her exhibits, which her mom would give a kiss goodbye before handing them over to their new owner. Dengel’s work reached the likes of Fred Rogers, who asked her to paint his portrait

on the air after he saw the portrait she painted of his father. The two episodes ran on PBS for years. Dengal painted a special portrait of Oprah as a child for her birthday and received a note from the icon along with a photo of her holding the painting. Over the years, Dengel’s work has also appeared on calendars and jigsaw puzzles. In a quote published on diannedengel. com, the artist said, “My work mostly has to do with people. I was born to make people. Some artists are wonderful with landscapes and modernistic work. I’m a people person.” Dengel’s prints will be for sale, along with the works of over 70 crafters, throughout Canal Days. According to Nora Hampton, who organized this year’s craft show, the number of crafters has increased by 40 percent and many are new to Spencerport Canal Days. The variety includes paintings, glassware, painted gourds, jewelry, candles, pottery, woodworking, doggie treats, fiber and specialty foods, such as fudge, seasonings, etc. “We hope that people will be willing to visit over the weekend to see what is new, and to take home some wonderful crafts from our varied vendors,” said Hampton. by Grace Griffee for the Canals Day Committee

Since Spencerport is situated right between the Niagara and the Finger Lakes wine trails, it only made sense to offer a wine tasting tent at Spencerport Canal Days. In its fourth year, the event has grown steadily in popularity. This year’s event will again feature six wineries, in addition to Cabot Creamery Cooperative cheese tasting, and produce from Maier Farm Market. This year’s featured wineries include: •Americana Vineyards and Winery in Interlaken along the Cayuga Wine Trail – Specializes in Chardonnay and Chablis, the popular Crystal Lake wine made from Niagara grapes, and dessert-style red Sweet Rosie. •Lakeland Winery, Syracuse – Offers a variety of wines, including Chocolate Covered Cherry dessert wine, a variety of fruit wines, and many others. •Main Street Winery, Arcade – Calls themselves Wyoming County’s first winery with Blackberry Blast, Crabapple Celebration, Strawberry Sensation and other sweet fruit wines among their most popular. •Montezuma Winery, Seneca Falls – A focus on fruit and honey wines, including

Westside News Inc.

July 23, 2017

Music fills the air at 36th Annual Spencerport Canal Days Jazz, country, rock, pop – no matter what your music preference, this year’s Spencerport Canal Days has you covered. Dori Swarthout, a music teacher at Bernabi Elementary School in Spencerport and owner of Dori’s Music Studio, tapped into her connections as a musician herself for a great line up over the two-day festival. On Saturday, July 29, students from Dori’s Music Studio will start things off on the Union St. Stage from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. They are followed by the Brockport Community Big Band from 12 to 1 p.m. playing the toe-tapping music popularized in the 1940s. From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sticks and Stones, a modern country band, will get the crowd hopping. Made up of some of the best musicians in the Rochester area, the band likes to play fun, funky, crowd-pleasing music. Closing out the entertainment for Saturday is Rockhouse Riot from 3 to 5 p.m. This is full-throttle rockabilly from Rochester, playing all the oldies and dressing the part, too. Also on Saturday at the Firemen’s Field, Anything and Everything will be playing classic and contemporary hits from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. They are followed by Feedback from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., a five piece band that plays anything from 80s rock and oldies to blues and country. From 3 to 5 p.m., Some Ska Band is an upbeat, high energy nine-piece Rochester band playing all types of Ska music. Ska combines elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line

accented with rhythms on the off-beat. They play music from the early 60s to present day, with popular covers and original tunes. On Sunday, Canal Days will open with the Spencerport High School Ensemble from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Union St. Stage. Then it’s Uptown Groove from 1 to 2:30 p.m. They play a little bit of everything light rock, pop and soul, country and country rock, Top 40, rock, funk and soul, power ballads, dance party medleys, and vocal and instrumental jazz. Johnny Bauer/Band of One wraps up the festival from 3 to 4:30 with Johnny playing kick/snare drums, cymbals, bass and lead guitars while singing blues/country rock. The Greece Jazz Band kicks off Sunday at the Firemen’s Field from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. with a varied repertoire of familiar standards, dance tunes and modern highenergy jazz charts. Exit 24 takes to the stage from 12:30 to 2 p.m. A fun party pop and rock band with three horns and two vocalists, they play music from the 60s to now. Last, but not least, is the Jive Street Five from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This five-piece band plays Rat Pack style music with their talented male vocalist singing Sinatra, Harry Connick, Jr. and Michael Bublé. The Town of Ogden will be offering entertainment of a different kind as part of its Bicentennial celebration. On Saturday, July 29, a fireworks show at Spencerport High School will begin at dusk. by Grace Griffee for the Canals Day Committee
