2 Spencerport Canal Days

Westside News Inc.

July 24, 2016

Canal Days celebrates 35 years of making Spencerport“Someplace Special” It’s hard to believe that what started as the simple idea of a sidewalk sale 35 years ago has grown into a yearly celebration of the Village of Spencerport and Erie Canal that people from all over come to enjoy. Dave George, who owned the then Bells Supermarket, asked Keith Ryan, owner of Westside News Inc. and sales rep at the time, to expand on the idea of the sidewalk sale in order to create more traffic for his store. Maureen Howard, who was living in Fairport and working at Ogden Telephone, heard through the grapevine that a committee was being put together and offered her knowledge of the Fairport Canal Days, which had already been established. “I believe in putting up or shutting up, so I volunteered to help get Spencerport Canal Days started,” she said. “I had a brief experience with arts and crafts, so (the late) Denny Marra (who at the time owned Spencerport Florist) and I teamed up and contacted some crafters we knew from a show at what was then Long Ridge Mall.” Other committee members included the late Glenn Boetcher, Ogden Recreation director; Cathy Kilday, who worked for the General Store for Pets and as sales rep for Suburban News; Donna Dollard, manager of the liquor store in Village Plaza; and Steve

Schmidt, Bells Market manager. Ginny Swarthout, owner of The Unique Shop, joined the second year and now chairs the committee. The committee’s goal was to show off the community, introduce the community to visitors, support local businesses and be a fun festival for the public. The commit-

tee has stayed true to its mission over the course of the 35 years and gives back to the community as a bonus. Last year the committee donated its profits to the American Legion, Ogden Special Police, Spencerport Fire Department, Spencerport Ambulance, and to the workers’ fund for the Village of Spencerport. In addition to the Canal Days Committee’s driving force, many groups roll up their sleeves to make Canal Days possible. Spencerport Fire Department allows use of their grounds and helps out with the Canaligator Race. The Village of Spencerport Department of Public Works gets the village ready for the event, sweeping the streets, providing dumpsters for garbage, along with posting signs, putting up barricades, etc. The Village Electric Department provides electric service and both departments are on standby in case they are needed. The Ogden Police Department is on hand and Spencerport Rotary members keep all areas clean. Spencerport School District provides school buses for shuttles. Local businesses donate funds to help finance the event. The local Lions and Kiwanis Clubs provide food booths, and over 100 community members volunteer throughout the event. “It truly ‘takes a village’ and I commend the committee for keeping Canal Days go-

ing for 35 years,” said Howard. “It’s a long time to keep an event alive and well without missing a beat.” This year, Spencerport United Methodist Church, 30 Amity Street, will be open both Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as a place to cool off, use the restroom, sit for a few minutes and enjoy a cool drink of Kool-Aid. “Given that our church is in the heart of activity we thought what better way to be involved and service our community,” said Angela Dorgan, Outreach Team leader. “I personally remember those hot July days walking with small, overheated and tired kids, just wanting to give them a little respite from my shopping. Hopefully this will give some people a way to prolong their visit to this awesome event.” Spencerport Canal Days take place Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Friday evening street dance won’t be taking place this year due to budget constraints. Don’t forget to avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot and dealing with traffic. Shuttle buses will be picking up and dropping off at Terry Taylor Elementary School and Spencerport High School. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Glenn Boetcher, Ogden Recreation Director at the time, and Terry Werth, author of a tape on the history of the Erie Canal, were planning for the 2nd Annual Spencerport Canal Days in 1983. Boetcher arranged for canal boat rides to be provided for that Canal Days, which were held Thursday through Saturday, July 28-30. The taped history was played to give riders some insight into the history of the canal. Westside News file photo taken by Julia Hahn. (Note -- Glenn Boetcher passed away in June of 2003 and the Boetcher Lodge in Pineway Ponds Park was named in his honor.)

Spencerport Canal Days will bring Amanda Lee Peers, Rochester native and artist from the NBC hit show “The Voice,” to its Gazebo Stage on Saturday, July 30 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The singer/songwriter has a wide range of influences from Bob Marley to Led Zeppelin, singing music with raw emotion and soul that crosses the genres of pop, rock, soul and everything in between. In 2014, Peers auditioned for season 7 of “The Voice,” singing “Put the Gun Down” by ZZ Ward for her blind audition, which landed her a spot on Gwen Stefani’s team. She released her debut solo album titled “Summertime State of Mind” in April 2015 and is currently back in the studio working on a second album. “I try to keep it local when scheduling entertainment for Canal Days,” said Wendy Dandrea, Canal Days Committee member. “I like to highlight Spencerport and Rochester area talent.” The entertainment kicks off on Saturday when the 3-D Line Dancers perform at the Gazebo Stage from 10 to 10:45 a.m. They’re followed by WARM 101.3’s Tony Infantino and his band, Keys to the Caddy, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. They play everything from the Beatles, Doobie Brothers and Kenny Loggins to Santana, Toby Keith and just about anything else one could dance to.

Plenty for the kids at Spencerport Canal Days

Tenth Annual Canaligator Race is on After much deliberation to whether the Spencerport Canal Days Canaligator Race was in accordance with New York State Gaming Commission regulations, the race is on. “The issue was brought forward by the Brockport Duck Race organizers,” said Ginny Swarthout, Canal Days Committee chair. “They wanted to do the right thing after hearing so much about the problems with another area raffle, so they contacted the NYS Gaming Commission and were told the duck race was illegal.” That prompted the Spencerport committee to cancel the Canaligator Race, but it turns out the race was being held legally after all. “We got our final approval on July 15 and learned that we had been following the rules all this time,” said Swarthout. “That made me feel a lot better and I’m so delighted that we can have the race.” The Canaligator Race is where 1,000 rubber alligators are launched into the Erie Canal and will take place on Sunday, July 31 at 4:30 p.m. at the Union Street Bridge. Tickets for the race may be purchased during the festival at either of two Information Booths on Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will receive their tickets and their gators with corresponding numbers will be put into a bin until the race. For the race, all of the gators are mixed together and launched into the canal at once. The first five gators and the last five gators to cross the finish line are the winners. You do not need to be present to win.

Prizes for the first five gators that cross the finish line are: Wegmans Gift Card $500 - donated by Wegmans; Wine Basket/Little Theater tickets $200 - donated by Spencerport Canal Days/Little Theater; Wegmans Gift Card $300 - donated by Wegmans; four Darien Lake Tickets $150 - donated by Spencerport Canal Days; and Wegmans Gift Certificate $200 - donated by Wegmans. Prizes for the last five gators to cross the finish line are: Seneca Lake Wine Tour for up to eight people $500 - donated by Spencerport Canal Days/LeGault Limousines; four RPO tickets and commemorative book $275 - donated by the RPO; Tops Gift Card $200 – donated by Spencerport Canal Days; Adams Basin Bed and Breakfast overnight stay $125 - donated by Spencerport Canal Days/Adams Basin Bed & Breakfast; and 18 holes of golf at Buttonwood Golf Course $28 - donated by Buttonwood Golf Course. All proceeds from the sale of tickets will be donated to area organizations. Past donations have included the purchase of bike racks, park benches and picnic tables for the Village of Spencerport and Town of Ogden, as well as contributions to the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf, Spencerport Fire Department, Aurora House hospice, and Eagle Star Housing for veterans. Look for Ally, the Canaligator, throughout the festival and follow her on Facebook @ AllytheCanaligator. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Canaligator Race tickets can be purchased at the festival by visiting either Information Booth.

Spencerport Canal Days has activities for the whole family, especially children. Anyone who has visited knows that there are always a variety of kiddie rides at the Firemen’s Field and strolling clowns throughout the festival. In addition to that, families are encouraged to stop by the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum where there will be historic games on the lawn. Inside, visitors can take a tour and try their hand at making a yarn doll. The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum houses many historical items from the Erie Canal, Ogden Telephone Company, Village of Spencerport and Town of Ogden. The Depot is also one of the selected cultural heritage sites in the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, as well as an Affiliate Site in their Partnership Program.

One of the most important stops families can make with their children is the New York Life booth where they can get a free child ID, which includes the child’s fingerprints, photo, contact information and other pertinent data needed by police in case of emergency. Child IDs are created using the EZ Child ID System, the nation’s most comprehensive digital fingerprinting child identification system that captures all of the vital information required by the Amber Alert System. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to receive the card. The process takes only three to five minutes and no child’s information or pictures are electronically retained. All data is automatically erased upon printing the card. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Local wineries and fresh produce showcased at Spencerport Canal Days This is the third year that locally produced wine will be showcased at Spencerport Canal Days - an event that has grown in both size and popularity. Pair that with locally grown produce, cheese, honey and cider, and one has a winning combination. Located in the Firemen’s Field on the southwest side of the canal bridge, admission to the tent costs $6 per person. “It’s been gratifying to see the wine tasting flourish since its inception,” said Greg Schweers, who along with his wife, Denise, and Pat Everett, organizes the event. “Attendance was up. Purchases were up. Happy wineries. Happy customers.” This year’s featured wineries include: A Gust of Sun Winery & Vineyard, Spencerport and Ransomville; Americana Vineyards, Interlaken; Lakeland Winery, Syracuse; Thousand Islands Winery, Alexandria Bay; and Victorianbourg Wine Estate, Wilson. In addition, Cabot Creamery Cooperative will have free samples of its Vermont cheeses, along with a variety available for purchase. Doan’s Honey Farm in Hamlin will serve free samples as well and will sell different flavors of honey, such as clover, wildflower, orange blossom, buckwheat and honey spread in assorted sizes. H. A. Maier Farm will offer fresh produce and Kirby’s Cider Mill Inc. in Albion will sell their apple products. “Maier’s had such a success with great local produce last year, they can’t wait to be back,” said Schweers. “And we’re looking forward to our new additions: Doan’s honey, Kirby’s cider and Cabot Cheese. Each winery table will have sealed bottles of wine for sale and any items purchased at the tent can be stored on site and picked up when customers are ready to leave the

festival for the day. Some of wines may be difficult to find outside the actual winery, so visitors are encouraged to stock up at the festival. Please note that no alcoholic beverages may be consumed outside the wine tent. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Canal Days Car Show is a real family event With cars on display from the early 1900s through the present, the Spencerport Canal Days Car Show, now in its 26th year, is not only fun, but acts as a lesson in history. The show will take place Saturday, July 30 at the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330 at 691 Trimmer Road, Spencerport, rain or shine. A shuttle bus pick up and drop off from Terry Taylor Elementary School, 399 Ogden Parma Town Line Road, will run about every 20 minutes. The day begins with a full breakfast available for purchase from 8 to 11 a.m. inside the Legion. Barton’s Parkside Hots will also be on hand beginning at 11 a.m. Registration opens at 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and costs $15 per car with no refunds. The first 200 registrants receive a dash plaque. “Last year’s participation was low because it rained,” said John Krywy, who has been volunteering with the car show for the past dozen or so years. “We normally get about 300 cars with last year’s oldest from the 1920s. It’s a labor of love taking a car that’s basically a junk pile and making it into a masterpiece.” A panel judges the cars using a point system based on criteria such as cleanliness, paint and engine condition. A Best of Show, the top 50

and 16 specialty trophies are awarded. The award winners will be announced at 3 p.m. This year’s entertainment is once again provided by DJ Mike Vickers from Legends 102.7 – a real favorite for car shows. The show is run completely by volunteers and all of the profits go back into the community. Last year, the proceeds were used to send two students to American Legion Boys State. High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend the program. In most cases, expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business or another community-based organization, such as the Spencerport Canal Days Car Show. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Spencerport Canal Days 11

Westside News Inc.

Unique arts and crafts abound at 35th Annual Spencerport Canal Days Arts and crafts are a huge draw when it comes to festivals and Spencerport Canal Days is no exception. There’s nothing more satisfying than taking home a lovingly created item for oneself or to give as a gift. Scott Haude, Spencerport native and Spencerport High School graduate, said he enjoys selling his rustic birdhouses, bird feeders and garden furniture at Canal Days because it’s so convenient for customers to drive up to his booth to load their purchases into their cars. His items range in size from two to over seven feet tall and can be quite heavy. “My wife and I create various sized rustic birdhouses, garden benches, birdfeeders, mirrors, plant stands, carved bears, arbors and cat condos made from

Again! this year

reclaimed barn wood, tree branches, stones, vines and other natural items,” said Haude. “Our most popular items are the rustic birdhouses on stands that incorporate bird baths and flower boxes.” The Haudes build each unique item in their garage workshop or basement workshop. “I like to build things and started making rustic décor items for my own garden, then the neighbors began asking for them,” he said. Haude said he likes being part of Spencerport Canal Days not only because he grew up there, but because the people who organize the event are friendly and easy to work with. Another unique offering at this year’s Canal Days are Bo’s Bones Gourmet Or-

ganic Dog Biscuits. “My friend, Jen Sage, began making the biscuits 15 years ago with the idea that she wanted to have good, healthy products for her own dogs,” said Pat Malinowski, who joined the company three years ago. The biscuits contain organic whole wheat bread flour, organic rolled oats, eggs from freerange chickens, honey and spring water, and range in size from the “TidBit” to the “Power Bone.” “We were looking for venues that would allow us to educate people about dog products that use all local, all organic ingredients,” said Malinowski about coming to Canal Days. “We’ve had a presence at several festivals along the canal in an effort to get the word out in Western New York.” Bo’s Bones also

works with rescue organizations and promotes the value of adopting shelter dogs. Going from treats for dogs to treats for people, Spencerport High School graduate Tom Falbo will be sampling and selling his famous hot sauces, PepperNutz. The signature small-batch crafted hot sauces include flavors like Pineapple Persuasion, Rum Runner and Banana Bomb, and are made with all natural ingredients, such as sugar cane and agave nectar, with no additives or preservatives. Arts and crafts booths will be located along Union Street between West Avenue to Amity Street and also at the Firemen’s Field. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee
