A Cookie Tradition by Barbara Burke

Family traditions abound at holiday time, many originate in the kitchen. A common tradition that brings families together is baking cookies. This traditional holiday sugar cookie recipe came my way through the kitchen of Mrs. Clara Burke, my mother-in-law. Clara grew up in Brockport, New York as Clara Whitney. A hard working, no nonsense, farm raised woman with unlimited common sense. As a woman in a farm kitchen she was skilled in cooking and baking. She used fresh, simple ingredients, whatever she had at hand. Clara claimed her “skills were merely the result of making a recipe over and over again, but this cookie recipe proves results can be magical on the first try. I started sharing her cookie recipe in 1973. The recipe didn’t have a name so I called it “Mrs. Burke’s Christmas Cookies. In the 44 years of sharing, this recipe has traveled across, up and down all over the country, the result of people tasting it, having to have the recipe for themselves, and then sharing the baked cookies and recipe with others. When you taste this cookie there is a sense of balance, maybe it is a remembrance, or the simplicity of it, or maybe it is magic. Although Clara passed over 20 years ago, each year at holiday time there is joy in knowing people are making, sharing and enjoying her cookies.

Cost Savings on Flood Insurance Policies for Greece Residents The Town of Greece, through participation in the National Flood Insurance Community Rating System (CRS) Program, has received a reduction in Class rating from 7 to 6, providing additional savings for taxpayers. Participation as a Class 6 CRS Community will provide Greece residents within the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area with a twenty percent discount on their flood insurance policies. Benefits also include improved public safety, property loss reduction, open space and natural resource protection, and better post-disaster recovery. The Town of Greece’s level of participation currently provides policy holders within the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area (FEMA Mapped 100-year Floodplain) with a fifteen percent discount, and our new twenty percent reduction will provide cost savings for residents with flood insurance policies. This reduction is significant as flood insurance rates have risen lately due to recent laws aimed at making the program self-funding, the elimination of subsidies, and the increased water levels we have been experiencing this year. The National Flood Insurance Community Rating System Program is a voluntary incentive program managed by the insurance industry and recognized by FEMA. CRS recognizes communities for enforcing floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum National Flood Insurance Program requirements. There are many benefits to participating in CRS, such as improved public safety, property loss

reduction, open space and natural resource protection, and better post-disaster recovery. CRS credit points are earned for a wide range of floodplain management activities, which are organized under four categories: (1) Public Information Activities, (2) Mapping and Regulations, (3) Flood Damage Reduction Activities, and (4) Warning and Response. In 2014, the Town’s participation in the CRS program provided Greece residents within the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area with a 10% discount on their flood insurance policies due to the Class 8 rating held by the Town of Greece. As a result of direction, policies and continued efforts, the Town of Greece was officially acknowledged at this year’s annual meeting of the New York State Floodplain and Stormwater Managers Association for advancing the Town’s status in the Community Rating System to Class 7, which is currently the highest rating in New York State. The Town continued to invest in efforts aligning with flood insurance policies, resulting in the Town of Greece receiving a class 6 rating, which will be effective May 1, 2018. This makes the Town of Greece one of only a small handful of municipalities in New York State to hold the highest rating for its efforts to protect its citizens from losses caused by flooding and notes that the Town has significantly exceeded the requirements for NFIP participation and effective floodplain management. Weight Matters The link between weight and knee pain. by Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC Did you know that for every extra pound of weight you are carrying on your body, you are putting 4 extra pounds on your knees? If a person is 25 lbs. overweight that is 100 extra lbs. of weight on your knees. If you think about all the steps you take every day, you will see how extra weight can prematurely and painfully wear out your joints. With nearly seven out of ten Americans being overweight, it is no wonder that Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in the USA with over 27 million adults suffering from it. Joints are the connections in the body where the bones come together and enable us to move our bodies in ways that allow us to do everything from walking to writing. When the joints become damaged our day to day life can suffer. Being overweight puts additional stress on weight bearing joints like the knee and hips, but it can also increase inflammatory factors in the body which add to painful joints throughout the body. Fat is a tissue that creates and releases chemicals which promote inflammation in the body. These chemical can influence

Hometown Hockey Hero Donates Skates Hometown hockey hero Brian Gionta and his wife Harvest Gionta announced that they are donating ice skates to the Town of Greece for residents to use on the outdoor rink. This generous donation includes 50 pairs of brandnew ice skates ranging in sizes from youth to adult as well as one dozen helmets for optional use. Additionally, Brian has partnered with Locker Room Sports on behalf of the Town of Greece to have the skates regularly sharpened at no cost. Ice skating is an activity Brian is passionate about. He joined the NHL New Jersey Devils in 2001 and was a member of their 2003 Stanley Cup Finals winning team. In addition, he has played for the Montreal Canadians and the Buffalo Sabres. Brian and Harvest Gionta are making these donations to help promote skating among the Greece community, the town they love and are active members of.

The Town of Greece skating rink is located on the Pickleball Courts, just outside the Community Center at 3 Vince Tofany Blvd in Greece. The rink is open Monday – Friday, 3:00pm – 9:00pm and Saturday – Sunday, 10:00am – 9:00 pm. You can bring your own skates or use the donated skates, which are available for free at the Community Ice Rink Warming Hut during open skate hours. The skating rink is available for free to Greece residents and $1 for nonresidents. “Hundreds of people from the community enjoy our outdoor winter ice skating rink. The Town of Greece is so thankful to Brian and Harvest Gionta for their generous donation and I encourage the families in our community to stop by and enjoy the ice rink this winter,” Supervisor Bill Reilich said. RIT’s University Gallery to feature distinctive sculpture by Cornell’s Roberto Bertoia “Confluence,” an exhibit featuring the unique sculpture of Cornell University artist Roberto Bertoia, will be on display at University Gallery inside Booth Hall on the RIT campus from November 1 to December 22, 2017. Bertoia, an associate professor at Cornell, has taught sculpture and drawing for three decades and has exhibited in national and international juried and invitational exhibitions. He has been commissioned by Winston-Salem State University and the University of Binghamton. Bertoia completed his BFA in sculpture in 1978 at the University of Windsor-Ontario and his MFA in sculpture at Southern Illinois University in 1982. The exhibit, featuring a number of pieces spiraling 13 feet high inside the gallery, is curated by Josh Owen, a professor and chair of the industrial design program at RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences and a former student of Bertoia’s. “Roberto Bertoia’s work has always inspired me and I continue to be intrigued by its powerful connections to architectural tectonics,” Owen said. “Bertoia was my mentor when I was studying sculpture during my undergraduate days at Cornell University. His thoughtful guidance helped direct me toward a career in design.” Owen noted that his former teacher’s knowledge of the design world was due in part to his familial connection to artist/designer Harry Bertoia, an Italian-born artist, sound art sculptor and modern furniture designer who studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. “When I joined the faculty at RIT, I discovered a surprising collection of Harry Bertoia sculptures in the RIT

Archive Collection,” Owen recalled. “The additional overlap of Massimo Vignelli’s work for Knoll in messaging some of Harry Bertoia’s designs revealed a confluence of factors that frame this exhibit’s narrative in the context of RIT, sparking a dialogue between art, architecture, craft and design.” “Working with Bob in the sculpture department at Cornell was one of the more impactful experiences for me as a young thinker and maker,” Owen added. “The framework of critical making that he delivered through his teaching opened up doors for me, which ultimately led to design.” Andrea Simitch, the Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow, department chair and associate professor, Cornell University Department of Architecture, said, “Just as a composer might hear the world in a way quite differently than most, those of us trained in architecture tend to look at works of art through lenses that emphasize the most continued on page 23

Olympia Class of 1977 40th Reunion On September 29 and 30, 2017 the Greece Olympia Class of 1977 held their 40th Class Reunion. The two-day event started on Friday at Ridgemont Country Club with cocktails, dinner and dancing and finished up on Saturday with a tailgating theme picnic at Braddock’s Bay State Park. During the Saturday picnic in commemoration of the 100 year Anniversary of Nick Tahou’s “Garbage Plates,” picnic attendees were served garbage plates with the food supplied by Tony’s Birdland. Thanks to generous contributions from some of the classmates, a great fun filled weekend was enjoyed by those in attendance which included 104 guests with 72 being classmates. With a graduating class of around 310, class reunion organizers were pleased to have close to a quarter of the class in attendance. Classmates traveled to the reunion from 11 different states, coming from as far as Arizona and California. The Reunion Committee started planning the event about nine months in advance of the

reunion, meeting once a month until the final month when weekly meetings were held. Thirty-three years ago the first class reunion was held by the Class of 1977. They named it the “7th Year Stretch.” They followed that with a 10th and a 20th year reunion and continued every 5 years from that point on. They also held a class birthday party in 2009 because most of the classmates turned 50 years old that year. They plan on holding a 60 year birthday bash in two years and other class reunions every 5 years moving forward. Class Reunion committee members say staying in touch and maintaining an updated and current contact list of classmates contributes to the success of the attendance of their events. The Class of 1977 thanks the reunion committee for their hard work and dedication over the past months. Reunion committee members included Dave Buchanan, Barb (Kraft) Buchanan, Cindy (Follaco) Ryan, Lisa Sciolino, Cathy Foster, Bob Jaskot and Mary (LoVullo) Scumaci. Provided Information and Photo

The Nutcracker Ballet by Karen Fien Many little girls dream about being a ballerina, dancing on pointe shoes, wearing beautiful costumes, and pirouetting across a stage to hauntingly beautiful classical music. These dreams really do come true for the dancers at Ballet Prestige, the official training academy of New York State Ballet. New York State Ballet is a non-profit organization that offers talented dancers from the Rochester area, and all over the world, the chance to fulfill their dreams of becoming classically trained ballet dancers, and sharing their talent with the community in exceptional productions. Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Ballet will be presented by New York State Ballet at the Kodak Center, 200 West Ridge Road, Rochester, on Friday, December

The production of The Nutcracker Ballet is always one of the artistic highlights of the holiday season. The New York State Ballet Company chose their top dancers for the production of The Nutcracker. Ballet Prestige also chose their top dancers, and the auditions held in July filled the remainder of the parts. NYSB dancers are signed to a one year contract covering all four of their productions during the 2017/2018 season. In a ballet company you dance the parts that are assigned by the Artistic Director. The choreographers know which dancers they would like to perform specific parts for all productions, then all the casting selections are discussed with the Artistic Director. part of “Clara” in The Nutcracker. Cadence Burke and Helen Frank are both dancers at Ballet Prestige. They dance six to seven days a week and rehearse their part for The

Nutcracker a few times a week. They have both danced in NYSB’s Nutcracker before, as well as Alice In Wonderland. The most significant role for a young dancer in The Nutcracker is “Clara” and both girls have worked their way up to achieve this role. Cadence Burke’s favorite part of her performance is the party scene in the very beginning of the ballet when she receives the Nutcracker. She says, “It is very believable, fun and happy.” She also loves the Arabian dance scene because it is enchanting and beautiful to watch. Helen Frank’s favorite part of her performance is when Clara dances with the Christmas Spirit. She says, “It is dreamlike, very mysterious and magical.” She also loves the flower core dance. Natalia Serra came to the dance company from Brazil under a two year work visa. She will perform multiple parts: Marzipan, Snow Queen and the Flower Core. Kayleigh Danowski, from Winston-Salem, North Carolina will perform the Sugar Plum Fairy role for a second year. She is also a ballet instructor at Ballet Prestige. This year’s portrayal of Drosselmeyer will be performed by Robert Royce. Robert is the Ballet Master, he teaches the men’s class, and rehearses and coaches the dancers. He says, “It is fun to work and perform with the dancers in this production.” continued on page 19

There are three choreographers for The Nutcracker Ballet, and they work together as a team. Katherine Johnson, the Artistic Director and Certified Professional Instructor, Sarah Rothrock-Rickel, Assistant Artistic Director and Janet Wentling, a Ballet Instructor, the Student Choreographer and Director of the children’s rehearsals. Katherine says, “There are so many moving parts to work with, twenty in the live choir, twenty-one in the orchestra, and eighty-seven performers. We have to take all of these pieces and make them fit together.” Each of the choreographers work on different scenes and it is a team collaboration that makes it all work. The goal of the dancers, choreographers, directors and entire production crew during this performance of the holiday classic The Nutcracker Ballet is to dazzle their audience, from the very beginning Christmas Party scene to the final dance scene. The audience will experience the world famous holiday music written by Tchaikovsky performed live by the professional New York State Ballet Orchestra, directed by Conductor Jared Chase, featuring the Lyric Voices Children’s Choir of the Lyric Theatre. The production also offers impeccable, classically trained ballet dancers wearing beautiful, colorful costumes, all set on the artistically designed and lighted Kodak Performing Arts stage. Tickets start at $15 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets can be purchased through www.newyorkstateballet.org or by calling 1-800-8383006. Photos by Karen Fien

EMERGENCY AT GREECE FOOD SHELF

Each month the numbers are similar: 725 people in families; 39 single people; 37 seniors and handicapped; a total of 801 people in need of food assistance. Over 800 people are fed by Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf each month thanks to Food Link and the generous donations of the citizens of Greece. Enough food for a week is provided for each individual. This includes one box of food plus bread, milk, eggs, and meat to singles and three boxes of food plus bread, milk, eggs, and meat to families. What this means is that the food you donate will fill the boxes and the money you donate will purchase the fresh food. Right now donations are down… THERE IS, INDEED, AN EMERGENCY AT THE GREECE EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF. We have all watched the price of food climb, but if you could find it in your heart, and in your budget, to donate to the GEFS to help us through this emergency, over 800 people would be in your debt monthly. You can donate through your church or service organization or even through your child’s school. Or you can bring items yourself to:

Annual Holiday “Shop with a Cop” Program Grows by Tami Raco

On Saturday December 2, 2017 the Greece Police Officers, in conjunction with Uniformed Patrolmen’s Association, will be hosting their annual Shop with a Copy Program. Since 1998 the Shop with a Cop Program has been bringing Christmas Spirit to underprivileged children in the Greece community. This year the program will be helping even more children in the community than it has in previous years. According to Shop with a Cop Coordinator Officer William Murray, this year’s annual golf tournament fundraiser, the primary fundraiser for the Shop with a Cop program, was a great success. In addition Officer Murray was able to secure a grant from the Walmart Foundation for $2500, funds that are designated for the Shop with a Cop Program. The extra funding allows the Shop with a Cop Program to serve all 12 Greece Elementary schools. Previously only three elementary schools were invited to choose students to participate in this program. Four children from each school are selected to participate in Shop with a Cop Day. This year the number of participants has grown from 36 to 48 children. Officer Murray is very pleased to be able to open this program to all the schools. As a Schools Resource Officer he has seen that there are families in all of the schools that have need of the program. The teachers, counselors and the principals from each of the Greece Elementary schools help select the children based on the most need and they also volunteer at the event to help with arts and crafts, and snacks. Officer Murray is excited that this year Superintendent Kathleen Graupman will be joining in on the day’s festivities. The day begins when the children and a parent arrive at the Dewey Avenue Walmart for breakfast and a meet and greet with the uniformed police officers. Officers volunteer

their time to spend the day with the children. The program is designed to help instill the Christmas spirit, and to build positive bonds between the children and the law enforcement community. While the kids are interacting with the officers Santa Claus will make a special visit arriving in a police car. Walmart provides the space for the event, festive Christmas music, pictures with Santa, crafts and a breakfast for all participants and volunteers. The highlight of the day is when each child gets a turn to go Christmas shopping with a Greece Police Officer. Typically each child gets $100 to spend, but Officer Murray anticipates that this year it will be even more thanks to the successful fund raiser and grant. For more information about the Shop with Cop program, the Uniform Patrolmen’s Association, or to donate to the program visit www.greeceupa.org Provided Photo

architectonic aspects of the work: Structure and spatiality are perhaps the most prevalent, material and construction follow, and the relation between intention and expression are additional bonuses.” Through this exhibit, Owen is hoping that people will experience the transcending nature of his mentor’s work. “Bob’s work transcends boundaries,” he observed. “His ability to see through the artificial divisions we create between disciplines reveals what an enlightened artist he is. With this exhibit, we’re hoping to open many reference points to his work. At the end of the day, this work is poetry that catalyzes with a clear and unique voice. The exhibit also provides an opportunity for a former student to foster a greater appreciation of one of his mentors and to inspire gallery visitors to look beyond boundaries and cross lucidly between disciplines. “I would like this exhibition to provide a portal for visitors into new ways of thinking,” he said. “There is also a subtext that underlines the importance of mentorship and how it can powerfully inform an individual’s path.” “I believe that there are many layers to this exhibit that will unfold for people, and I’m hopeful it will be as impactful for others as it’s story is for me,” Owen said. About RIT’s University Gallery The University Gallery, located on the RIT campus in James E. Booth Hall, features exhibitions comprised of works that inspire creativity and spark the imagination. Exhibitions showcase work from RIT’s extensive archives, the work of professional alumni as well as traveling exhibitions. New Sensory Friendly Program Making Theatre Accessible For All The Rochester Association of Performing Arts (RAPA) is introducing a new form of theatre for people with special needs. While RAPA has already incorporated American Sign Language Interpreters and Hearing Devices for those with hearing disabilities, RAPA’s new Sensory Friendly Performance program will be specifically geared towards audience members with autism and other special needs. Working with BOCES and AutismUp, the RAPA Team developed a performance program that is enjoyable for an audience impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders and other sensory, social, and cognitive disabilities. Barbara Martorana, Director of the Department for Exceptional Children at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, leads the team who meet and exceed the standards of a similar program at the Children’s Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Martorana trained the RAPA team and ushers on making this production accessible and enjoyable for all. RAPA Family Theatre featured three Sensory Friendly

Performances in the 2017-18 Season. A Year with Frog and Toad held on Sunday, October 1, 2017; and upcoming The Gingerbread Man on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 4:30PM; and Treasure Island on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 4:30PM. Audiences can expect these performances to have a reduction of loud and jarring sounds, no flashing or strobe lights, removal of actors in the aisles, theatre house lights remaining on at 50% during the performance, post-show character Meet & Greet location changed to limit distraction, and more. Additionally, Martorana and the RAPA Team have developed a Social Story, available on the RAPA website to walk audiences through attending a production at the Kodak Center before arrival. Osher at RIT celebrates 30-year Milestone of Lifelong Learning The brain never retires. Proof is located within Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology (Osher at RIT) which now boasts 700 active members. The stimulating environment for 50-plus learners has been a go-to place in the Greater Rochester community where people can continue to teach, learn and remain active in their retirement and semi-retirement years. “This is a wonderful milestone for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at RIT, and we are grateful to the many volunteers who have given their time and talents to its mission, and to the staff who have supported the needs and goals of the membership over the past three decades,” said Deborah Stendardi, vice president for Government and Community Relations at RIT. “Osher is an important part of the RIT family, and we take great pride in its continued success as a learning academy for the greater community.” The organization started in 1986 when Mark Blazey, then-RIT dean of training and professional development, visited the University of Delaware and was so impressed with its model of Individual Learning in Retirement (ILR) that he returned home and presented a plan to RIT’s Board of Trustees. A year later, “The Athenaeum” was born from RIT’s original name in 1829. The current facility, Rivers Run, has 6,500 square feet of space and five classrooms. Osher at RIT offers 50-plus courses throughout the year where members share their life experiences, knowledge and genuine interests across a wide spectrum. There are no grades, no homework, no pressure—just plenty of feel-good camaraderie among

thinkers who wish to share the sheer joy of learning. “Osher is not an ‘institute’ but people,” said Thomas Low, Osher at RIT chair. “It’s a community of people who wish to keep learning by taking classes in the arts, history, sciences and humanities.” Marie Levin, who lives in Fairport, N.Y., retired 14 years ago and a new world of lifelong learning opened when she joined the organization. She started taking classes and eventually her interest was drawn to leading members into the realm of ancient history. “This was a new experience after spending 35 years in the clinical laboratory business,” said Levin. “As a memberled organization, I became a member of the Osher Council and held various leadership positions. “People have misconceptions about aging - and this is the opposite. These people are very, very energetic and active. To all members, a job well done as we celebrate our 30th anniversary.” Osher at RIT lifelong learning organization first opened its doors in 1987. Aquinas Boys Varsity Soccer Finishes Strong by Tami Raco

Aquinas Boys Varsity Soccer had a strong come back this year with a 9/8/1 season finish. They overcame a twowin season last year. Their 2017 season ended in the sectionals where they lost to the 3rd ranked team in the state, Honeoye Falls, in a 1/0 sudden death OT game. Coach Josh Gleason and Assistant Coach Nick Laurini of Greece led AQ varsity boys’ soccer into the sectionals for the first time since 2014. This season’s best player was Josiah Fragnito of Greece, a senior at AQ. As a center middle-fielder, Fragnito had an amazing season with 17 goals and 7 assists. Aidan Kopacz of Greece played his third year on varsity as a junior at AQ and ranked #1 in most minutes played in the season. Kopacz is a defense center middle-fielder. Robby Beach of Greece, utility player and Brian House of Chili, defensive center middle, both also had a very strong season. Kyle Pero, of Greece, a junior at AQ is the Goalie and came back after a knee injury to help lead the team to a very strong finish. Coach Gleason is looking forward to having 17 players returning next year and he anticipates a great season. Both Coach Gleason and Coach Laurini are AQ graduates. Head

Coach Gleason graduated in 1994 and has been coaching AQ soccer for 5 years. This is my favorite team of kids I have ever coached,” said Gleason. For more information on the team visit https://www.aquinasinstitute.com/page/ athletics/sports-teams

Put Giving Twists on Holiday Traditions If giving is an important aspect of your holiday traditions, you may find yourself repeating the same activities year after year. While the giving feels good, it can also grow monotonous. This season, make your generosity feel fresh and new by putting your own unique twist on your favorite holiday traditions. Cook extras for the cookie exchange. A baking party is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season. The delightful aromas and hours of laughter blend with the sweet treats for a cheery (and tasty) tradition. This year, instead of simply baking cookies to trade with your friends, encourage everyone to bake several extra batches and take them to a local soup kitchen or senior living community. Extend a seasonal icon. The ringing bells and red kettles found outside of retailers across the nation are nearly as symbolic of the holiday season as twinkling lights and rednosed reindeer.

Taxpayer Savings with LED Lights

The Town of Greece researched the possibility of putting in LED lighting at the Town Hall Campus and all town-owned buildings, and wherever it is feasible they are doing it. Several buildings on the Greece Town Hall Campus now have LED lights. This includes the Town Hall, the Library, the Community and Senior Center, the Court, and the Department of Public Works Facility. LED lights will also be installed for the campus parking lot, campus sidewalk, and the campus flag pole. Total installation should be completed by the end of November. Additionally, last summer the Town tested out several varieties and brightness factors for LED street lighting on a section of Hillbridge Drive in order to replace existing street lights in need of replacement with LED. The Town received and appreciates the input from residents and many members of the DPW staff in determining the correct brightness and lighting style. LED lighting is more economical and typical bulbs can last up to 20+ years. The latest road work being done on Harvest Drive will include LED street lighting and will be completed by year’s end. This photo was taken of one of the contractors switching out a parking lot light.

Addison Precision Manufacturing Coming to Greece The Town of Greece is pleased to announce that Addison Precision Manufacturing is making Greece their new home. They are currently located on Avis Street in the City of Rochester. They have grown too large for their current facility, so they are building and moving into a new facility on Gates-Greece Townline Road. This new facility will begin with 128,000 square feet, with the ability to expand by about 30% if needed. The site is on land owned by Munipro, Inc., a public benefit corporation of the Town of Greece. Addison Precision Manufacturing’s application was received late in October 2017, and their new facility is expected to be opened by 2018. The company will offer job opportunities and increase the tax base in Greece. Addison Precision Manufacturing will be building a state-

Nine percent of pet parents polled indicate that their pets will join the family in picking out the Christmas tree, half said their pets will be a part of the holiday greeting card, and 14% will take their pet to sit on Santa’s lap and tell them what they want for Christmas! And gifts they will receive! Nearly 75% of respondents plan to buy gifts for their beloved furry family members this year. What’s more, 23% of pet parents polled said they would even take their pet holiday shopping with them to pet friendly stores. “The bond between pet parents and pets is incredibly strong, just as any family relationship.” says Kim Salerno, President & Founder of TripsWithPets.com. “Pets are truly members of the family -- bringing so much joy and love to our everyday lives. How can we not share with them the most wonderful time of the year?” Provided Information by TripsWithPets.com

With the holiday season upon us it’s time to start shopping, planning, and getting excited for all that much needed family time and love. Some of the most deserving of this family time are none other than the family pets, of course! The ones who love you unconditionally all year and want to be included in your holiday plans just as much as you want to include them. When it comes to who to spend the holidays with, pets certainly rank! According to the survey, a whopping 85% of those polled plan to spend their holidays with their four-legged family members. A large percentage of those, 49% to be exact, plan on traveling this holiday season and bringing their pooches with them. Families plan to include their pets in more than just travels during the holidays. Pets will be a part of many holiday tradi-

plenty of opportunities for celebratory meals, and it’s the perfect time to ask everyone to lend an hour or two to a good cause. Instead of spending hours around a table, spend some of that time catching up while you volunteer at a food bank or other charitable organization. When you make your way on to dinner, your festive spirit may be even stronger for the difference you made together. Travel with care. As you flit from one place to the next checking off your list of holiday chores, you may encounter any number of homeless and needy families. Instead of simply handing over a few dollars as you pass by, keep a supply of holiday care packages in the car. Include items like warm socks or gloves, toiletries and non-perishable snacks. You may even want to include an uplifting note to share some festive seasonal cheer. Give gifts with meaning. If you’re like most people, there are many on your shopping list who truly don’t need a thing. Instead of wracking your brain, donate to a cause in their honor. It may be the foundation of a beloved alma mater or an organization serving orphans in the country where they honeymooned. The more personal the connection, the more gratefully it will likely be received. After making your donation, simply gift your recipient with a card that explains the contribution you’ve made in their name. No matter which cause you support, a fresh approach to your charitable giving can renew your spirit and enthusiasm for helping those in need this holiday season. Free Little Library The Town of Greece announced that the Greece Town Hall Campus now boasts a “Free Little Library” from which residents can borrow books. The concept is that families and children get a book from the “library” and also drop off books that they have already read for someone else to enjoy. It is set up so people can keep the books, pass them along, and/or share them as a community – no one is ever required to return the books. Please note that this in no way replaces all of the great opportunities to borrow books from our Greece Public Library. The “Free Little Library”, which was modeled after Greece Town Hall, was kindly built by the Department of Public Works staff using leftover materials from Town jobs. The weather- resistant model will be permanently placed outside near the Kids Canyon Playground in the Spring. It is currently in the Greece Community and Senior Center and will remain there this Fall/Winter season. The materials used in building the model were plywood, roofing shingles, oil base paint and Lexan plastic for the see-through doors. The dimensions are about 50” long X 17” wide X 25” high. “I have wanted to bring the “Free Little Library” to the Greece Town Hall Campus after seeing them pop up in other communities. Parents and kids can

Wisky in costume as Pennywise. Provided photos.

Spencerport Chihuahua goes viral by Tami Raco Wisky, the 13-year-old blind Chihuahua, was born and raised in Spencerport. His owner, Mercedes Murray, loves horror movies and Stephen King is her favorite author. For Halloween this year she decided to dress her four pound pup Wisky as Pennywise, from the 2017 IT movie that was just at the theatres. Mercedes thought Wisky’s unique colored eyes were perfect for the Bill Skarsgaard look. She went all over looking for the perfect items to pull this costume together. For his hairpiece she used a sock and glued on orange faux fur. Mercedes and her pack are regulars at local parks. They love long walks but Wisky’s favorite park is Pineway Ponds in Spencerport. Mercedes found the perfect setting for his costume pictures at a park in Victor she visits. She recalled it having a drain pipe and a setting very similar to the one in the movie. She took some cute pictures of her ever so patient Wisky dressed up as Pennywise. Later that day she posted them to Facebook. To Mercedes surprise, when she woke in the morning the picture had gone viral. The picture was shown across the world. First Kimberly from the local radio station 95.1 picked it up then local TV news stations aired it. Digital magazines and pages from Reddit, College Humor, and countless international sites shared pictures of Wisky the little Chihuahua from Spencerport. The IT Official Movie page even shared Wisky. Wisky won the best costume of the year on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon”. continued on page 34

Weight Matters continued from page 13

the development of Osteoarthritis. Achieving and maintaining a healthy body composition can help lighten the stress on the joints as well as significantly reduce the inflammation of joints. The benefits of weight loss are quadrupled for those who suffer with Osteoarthritis. Even modest weight loss can significantly lighten the load on your joints especially the knees. Losing one pound of weight will reduce 4,800 lbs. off the knees for every mile walked. (According to Stephen Messier PhD Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism 7/05). If a person was to lose 10 lbs. each knee would be relieved of 48,000 lbs. per mile walked. Studies show that if a woman loses 11 lbs. of weight, she can reduce her risk of knee Osteoarthritis by more than 50%. Healthy weight loss can be achieved with a diet rich in whole foods, smart carbohydrates, reducing/eliminating sugar and flour, healthy proteins and fats. Regular exercise can also decrease weight, body fat, and help improve joint health. For help with improving your diet and beginning an exercise program consult with your doctor.
