Save Big! February 2016
New individual study furniture for the Quiet Study Area at the main branch of the Greece Public Library, 2 Vince Tofnay Blvd., on Town Hall Campus was installed on January 7, 2016. “We are excited to be the first public library in Monroe County to offer the Brody WorkLounge,” said Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich in a statement. “The Quiet Study Area at the library is a place where our residents come to focus and concentrate, away from the distractions of everyday life. These 16 new units are built for the 21st Century, equipped with electricity and an adjustable workspace that will allow visitors to take better advantage of the library’s free and fast WiFi connection.” The Brody WorkLounge line of Steelcase furniture was a 2015 Best of NeoCon® award winner in the Education Solutions category. On January 4, 2016 longtime Greece Town Historian Alan Mueller’s office was relocated to the Greece Public Library, 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard, Greece. Moving the Town Historian’s office to the library will complement the many programs and services provided by the library. The previous office for the Town Historian was located on the second floor of the Greece Historical Society and Museum located in the Gordon A. Howe Home, 595 Long Pond Road, Greece and was not handicap-accessible. The building also lacked an adequate climate neutral environment for record storage, in accordance with state standards. “The relocation of the archives became a concern when state guidelines placed an importance on the protection of historic material,” said Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich in a statement. “Alan Mueller does an excellent job promoting the history of the community and educating residents about the resources we have at our disposal. I am extremely excited to have his wealth of knowledge more accessible to the public.” Provided Information

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope everyone is staying safe and warm as we battle through another western New York winter season. I would like to remind residents to allow for extra travel time during their commute, and to be mindful of weather warnings. While there may be snow on the ground, this does not stop Town Hall from planning for the future of our community. I am pleased to announce that on January 20th; I along with Chief Patrick Phalen and members of the Greece Town Board broke ground on a new state-of-the-art Police Department Headquarters. The new headquarters will help to deliver needed upgrades and improvements for our police force and expand overall productivity. This historic ground breaking ensures that the safety and well-being of all residents is taken into account when planning for the future of our town. Also new in 2016, is our Greece Town Hall Ice Rink. The new rink, located at the pickle ball courts, provides residents for some great outdoor activity with family and friends during these winter months. The next time you’re in need for some fun outdoor activity, stop by Town Hall and check out the new rink. Remember, you can now follow us on Twitter (@GreeceTown) and Facebook for event updates and other Town related news in addition to checking our website. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Groundbreaking on New Greece Police Headquarters Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Greece Town Board Members Mike Barry, Brett Granville, Andrew Conlon, and Diana Christodaro, along with County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn for the official ground breaking ceremony of the new Greece Police Headquarters. This project is a culmination of a year of planning to create a new $9 million state of the art facility. The new addition to the Greece Town Campus will be located at 6 Vince Tofany Boulevard. Construction on the new facility is set to begin shortly after the groundbreaking with an anticipated completion date in early 2017. The new facility will help provide much needed upgrades to an already outdated Police Headquarters. The nearly 30,000 square footage of new space will contain holding cells, an evidence storage area, a training facility and an interrogation room. Additionally, the new department will house both patrol and investigation units. “While our crime rates are low, public safety has always been one of my top priorities. This historic ground breaking ensures that the safety and well-being of all residents is taken into account when planning the future of our town,” said Supervisor Bill Reilich. “The new state of the art facility will help to deliver needed upgrades and improvements for our police force and expand overall productivity. The Town is excited to finally give the Greece Police Depart-
ment and its residents all the upgrades needed to ensure the safety of our town well into the future.” Provided Information and Photo

The Truth About Emotional Eating Tips to help you avoid sabotaging your weight loss goals by Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer & Nutrition Coach Emotional Eating is something most of us do in variations. Turning to certain foods when we feel sad, angry or stressed is more common than not. We don’t always eat for the simple need to satisfy hunger. We also turn to food for comfort, stress relief, or as a reward. The unfortunate part of this behavior is that eating for emotional reasons doesn’t fix the actual emotional problems. Most times it makes you feel worse. Afterward, not only does the original emotional issue linger, but you also feel guilty for overeating. Here are some tips to help you learn to recognize emotional eating and begin to break free from the cycle. 1. Unawareness Emotional eating can be a direct result of not being mindful of what or why you’re eating. Unconscious eating is when you’re done with your meal and you continue to pick at it, slowly eating the remaining portion that you intended to leave behind. It can also be putting chips or crackers or any other food in your mouth, just because it’s in front of you. Do you find yourself heading for the pantry after a stressful day? Do you grab the ice cream when your bored? The solution? Try to be mindful of what and when you are eating. Stay aware of your triggers and avoid eating when you are facing them. Remember that food is food and emotions are emotions. Take five minutes before you indulge in the craving. Find something else to work through that craving and emotion. 2. Food as Your Only Pleasure Often people claim that food is the only thing they have to look forward too. At the end of a long and hectic day, a big bowl of ice cream can be effective in temporarily soothing our exhausted, hard-working selves. Why?
According to many sources sugars releases opiates in our brains. Opiates are the active ingredients in cocaine and heroin and many other narcotics. Breaking these habits can be like kicking a drug habit. The solution? Find other ways to reward and soothe yourself besides food In order to truly give up emotional eating, you are also going to have to practice tolerating difficult feelings. Which leads to #3. 3. Inability to Tolerate Difficult Feelings In our society at a young age we learn to avoid things that feel bad. Unfortunately, the ways we have found to distract ourselves from difficult feelings are not always in our best long term interest. Without the ability to tolerate life’s inevitable unpleasant feelings, you’re susceptible to emotional eating or other destructive behaviors. The solution? Practice letting yourself experience difficult feelings. No one likes feeling stressed, mad, sad, rejected, and bored. Allowing yourself to feel the unpleasant emotions can be scary. You might even fear it to be like Pandora’s Box, once it’s open you won’t be able to close it. The truth is that when we just allow ourselves to feel the emotion without obsessing or suppressing them, they will subside relatively quickly. To do this you must be mindful of what you’re feeling and stay connected to your moment to moment experiences. This can help you reign in the urge and help prevent you from having to blunt your feelings with behaviors you’d like to stop – like eating. 4. Body Hate Hating your body is one of the biggest factors in emotional eating. Negativity, shame and hatred rarely inspire people to make long-lasting great changes, especially when it comes to our bodies or our sense of self. The solution? Avoid continued on page 16

thinking or saying critical statements about your body. Try not to compare yourself to others or even yourself 20 years ago. This takes practice and consistency. 5. Physiology Letting yourself get too hungry or too tired is the best way to leave yourself vulnerable to emotional eating. When your body is hungry or tired it sends strong messages to your brain that signal it to eat. Sometimes these signal are stronger than the strongest will power. The solution? More sleep and regular consistent meals. Make those two things a priority. There is no way around it. By learning to develop healthy lifestyle habits, recognizing and managing emotional problems without the use of food, you can achieve your weight management goals.
Greece Community Ice Rink New for 2016, this ‘natural’ ice rink was implemented to bring back memories of ice rinks that previously existed for the residents of Greece. The rink is located on the Greece Town Hall Campus at 1 Vince Tofany Blvd. behind Community Center on the north end. The Greece Community Ice Rink is 175 ft. long by 65 ft. wide, giving skaters of all skill levels plenty of room to enjoy. In addition, there is a heated ‘hut’ on site to provide a comfortable place to change in and out of skates. The ice rink is weather dependent as it is a natural made ice rink. Therefore, the rink may be closed at times. Rink hours are Monday-Friday 3pm-9pm; Saturday and Sunday 10am-9pm. Skating is free for Greece Residents. Residents must show proof of residency with photo ID (Drivers License). A Greece resident is one who pays Greece Town Taxes. Non-Residents cost is $1 to skate. Bring your own skates and check in at the ice rink shed upon arrival to get an admission tag to skate. No hockey playing is allowed. Provided Information Photos by Tom Parsons

The Healthy Highway Rolls Along by Barbara Burke
Wendy Cooper is the President and Founder of Healthy Highway - The Green Light to Good Health, an innovative program of educationally sound concepts, creative lessons and materials that use traffic metaphors to encourage health, fitness and nutrition for students in grades K-5. Cooper spent 30 years as a Physical Education teacher in the Fulton and Greece School Districts. “The concept started with the “Rules of the Road” program while I was teaching. It was originally designed to teach children how to move safely through the gymnasium and to look out for each other using traffic metaphors. The students connected with the ideas and themes of transportation. As time
went on it grew and we added a Fuel-Injected Nutrition Program based on thinking about the body as an automobile and how the fuels that are put into the body have a direct result on the performance of the body,” Wendy says. Both programs are still in use today in schools across the country. Building on this program after her retirement, and now in its 10th year, Cooper has shared her Healthy Highway Program with schools and the community through partnerships and by serving on a number of health related committees including the Greece School District Wellness continued on page 19

The Healthy Highway Rolls Along continued from page 18 Committee and K-2 Assessment Committee. She initiated a partnership with Wegmans Food Markets implementing an in-school nutritional program focused on health, nutrition and education for school-age children. In January of 2015 a school assembly took place to kick off the fun and positive partnership of the Healthy Highway Program and the Greece Police Department called Healthy Highway Heroes. The goal of this partnership is to increase connectivity of the community outreach of the Greece Police Department and the district’s elementary school students by uniting both students and officers with commitments to healthy living. Officers visit Greece elementary schools during lunch time and eat with the students talking with them about their lives and how to incorporate healthy choices into their lives. They also attend special school assemblies throughout the year talking to the students about a healthy lifestyle. Cooper said feedback from her collaboration with the Greece Police Department has been very positive. “It has gone beyond expectations. I was told by officers that during the Barnard Firemen’s Carnival kids approached them, gave them high fives, and talked to them, remembering them from the school program. That is our goal, to make the connection between the police officers and the kids so that they feel the officers are approachable,” Wendy said. Cooper recently designed a Healthy Highway Heroes educational kit specifically designed for police, fire and emergency personnel. The kit contains the nutritional concepts, ideas and tips on how to talk to elementary students about a healthier lifestyle. It starts from making just one healthier choice per day, and it builds from there, teaching kids that health is the result of personal choices and that we are all responsible for the upkeep of our own “vehicles.” To learn more about “Healthy Highway Heroes” visit www.healthyhighway.com and click on the Healthy Hero link to hear from Greece Police Officer Sgt. the program for the Police Department, as well as a school cafeteria manager Leslie O’Keefe. Cooper’s latest project is an on-line, bi-monthly magazine called “Healthy Rules of the Road” that will premier in mid-February. By subscribing to this free, on-line magazine through her website, families will have direct access to the Healthy Highway concepts. In the magazine families learn how to turn their kitchens into learning labs where they will work as a team to create healthy meals and healthy habits that contribute to an overall healthier lifestyle. There is also a focus on the importance of physical activity and ideas will be presented for easy ways to add activity into daily routine. “The concepts presented allow for families to individualize their approach to adopting a healthier lifestyle. When I attend Family Nights at schools I am hearing that students are telling their parents about the concepts that they are learning at school and how they need to have healthy food choices and activities at home in order for them to earn points for their Fuel Gauge. That really prompted the idea of the online magazine, making the information directly accessible to families,” Cooper says. Each edition of the magazine will feature stories and articles from contributors such as chefs, doctors, dentists, nutritionists and various health professionals, all designed to motivate and accelerate healthy choices. Families learn about their “Inner GPS” and how it is a guide to our own bodies and the importance of keeping in balance, and the fact that we can “recalculate” at any time to keep on the right road to health. Some of the articles featured in the first edition include Greece Police Officer Todd Gumaer receives an enthusiastic an article on the Greece Police Healthy Highway Heroes

Own a piece of AMERICAN HISTORY!
With the diminishing 100-150 year old Barns throughout our country, the availability of these naturally beautiful woods is very limited. We can design anything you want, your way. Dining tables, any size, desks according to your needs, bookcases, end tables, etc. Bring us your ideas and come work with me and together we will design a one of a kind true heirloom for your family, at fair pricing. Some of my designs are in our inventory and changing always, as my new ideas and special uses for these fine woods evolve. Always shop AMERICAN ACCENTS for “NEW” ideas in decorating. Example: this desk of barnwood with steel legs was designed for the special needs of this buyer, Towne and Country Eyecare, Spencerport.

New York State Department of Transportation to Repave West Ridge Road In addition to the Latta Road repaving project in Greece, the New York State Department of Transportation has announced plans to resurface West Ridge Road between Route 390 and Dewey Avenue in the Town of Greece beginning in the Spring of 2016. The section of West Ridge Road and the railroad crossing east of Carlisle Street will be milled and resurfaced, and sidewalks and ramps will also be repaired. Access to all businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the project. Traffic will continue to use West Ridge Road during construction. Multi-lane closures will be limited to off-peak hours and much of the work will be conducted at night. Construction on this project is expected to be complete by October 2016. “Ensuring the reliability of our infrastructure is at the core of providing safety to our residents while traveling,” said Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich. “These improvements are greatly needed and I know our residents will benefit once the projects are completed.” For project information, please contact Daniel Schwind at (585) 272-3368, email daniel.schwind@dot.ny.gov. by Barbara Burke Interior Expressions by Design is a Retail Home Decor, Apparel and Gift Store located at 1100 Long Pond Road in Greece. Owned and operated for the past four years by Jim and Barb Miller, the Interior Expressions by Design shopping experience is one-of-a-kind. “We focus on customer service,” Barb Miller says, “I search for unique merchandise that is not found other places.” During the month of January the Millers traveled to several Gift Shows seeking out new merchandise for the upcoming Spring shopping season. Barb says she is especially excited about the Gardening Season and that was a focus while purchasing for her shop. In addition to new Spring Gardening merchandise, other purchases include Spring Fashions, Accessories, Handbags, Scarfs, Home Decor and more. Interior Expressions by Design also carries Hallagan Fine Furniture (Made locally in Newark, New York), Simply Noelle Clothing, Textiles, Prints, Jewelry, Candles and much more. The store is 2,000 square feet of frequently changing merchandise full of inspiration for self, home and gift giving. The Miller’s Greece store began after a short retirement from 21 years at the Apple Tree in Brockport. Barb says, “Retirement didn’t agree with me and I felt I could offer the residents of Greece and beyond an alternative to the big box stores. I plan to continue to extend exceptional customer service, unique merchandise choices and great price points to all my customers.” Jim and Barb Miller pledged to donate a portion of the proceeds from sales on Small Business Saturday, November 2015 to the Greece American Legion. The response and support for the Miller’s effort from the community was astounding. “I am so thankful to all of our customers for supporting our store and our local veterans. Many of my customers told me they waited until that day to make their purchases, I also had many customers donate extra money to the fund,” Barb says. Interior Expressions by Design is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 5:30pm; Thursday 10am to 8pm. Visit www.interiorexpressionsbydesign.com for more information.

Preparing Recruits at Greece Police Training Academy by Tami Raco The Greece Police Department hired three new police recruits and they began their Academy Training on December 2, 2015. Receiving an offer of employment is not immediately accompanied by a badge, uniform, and set of keys to a police cruiser. Completion of a six month Academy and a four month Field Training Program is required as part of the hurdles to becoming a fullfledged Greece Police Officer. The three recruits that were hired have been working hard in their six month Training Academy and are expected to graduate this Spring. The Police Officer Training program consists of many topics, including both classroom style training as well as hands on training and role play. The majority of the initial training is
ers many potential situations. Role plays include report taking, crime scene investigation, traffic stops, defensive tactics, domestic related calls and emotionally disturbed person scenarios. Recruits also receive training in DWI detection and EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operation and Control). Upon graduation from the Academy, these new Greece Police officers will spend 16 weeks in FTO (Field Training Program). In this phase of their training, the recruits continue to build on their proficiency as officers while they are shadowed by a Senior Officer. The new officer will work closely under the supervision of their Senior Officer for the duration of their training. This part of the program will educate the officer on department specific training as well as provide real life experience. Upon completion of the FTO program the officer will be assigned to a precinct and platoon. Photos by Tom Parsons

Regular physical conditioning exercises are used to help condition and strengthen the officers to meet the potential demands of the job. While inside the classroom, many hours are dedicated to learning about both penal law and vehicle and traffic law. Outside of the classroom the recruits spend hours on the firearms range learning proficient firearms tactics. In addition to the firearms training, they will receive Defensive Tactics Training which includes hands-on defensive tactics, training with the baton, the use of pepper spray, Taser and exposure to tear gas. The role play and scenario training is interactive and cov-

Rochester’s Oldest Cider Mill expands into Craft Brewing and Cidery by Tami Raco In the 1800’s Mayer’s Cider Mill was built in Webster by Perry Landgon. It eventually was purchased by a farmer Donat Mayer who ran the farm as a family business until the 1960’s when he sold it to David Bower Sr. In the 80’s his son David Bower, Jr. purchased a fruit farm and apple orchard at 1593 Hamlin Parma Townline Road, in Hilton. This eventually became the 2nd location of Mayer’s Cider Mill. Over the past several years the apple orchard has been transformed into 55 acres of vineyards to include a winery, restaurant and now a Brewery and Bistro. David Jr. has been involved with micro brewing since the 80’s selling hobby brew kits to homes and small brewers. It seemed like a natural fit for Mayer’s Lake Ontario Winery to now have its own custom craft brewery and cidery. This spring a new 10,000 sq. foot building will be opening which will offer the new lines of craft beers, hard ciders and distilled products. These products are all made on premise to include over 10 styles of home grown hops. The majority of the craft beer that will be offered are Belgian and German. With over 13 different styles of beer and 16 taps they will include Hefeweizen, Belgian Witbier, Triple Blonde, and Lager, German IPA, Belgium Pale Al and more. The Hard ciders are made right on premise and range from a variety of Dry, to Semi-dry and several fruit flavors like Twisted Apple ™, Riesling blended apple, Cranberry and more. The distilled products offered are Apple Shine, Aged Whiskey and several fruit flavored brandy such as black cherry, Peach and Pear. This spring the new expansion will be open and offering a large variety of tastings, pairings, and appetizers as well as a Bistro style menu. There will also be a unique outdoor dining experience in the Hop Arbor. Patrons can enjoy their food and drink outdoors at pub style tables on the scenic property. Mayer’s not only offers a restaurant, bakery, winery, brewery and cidery, but also has a retail operation providing customers not only wine but also 64 oz. and 32 oz. growlers. In addition there are many classes available to hobbyists. Dave loves educating others on the art of making Beer, Cider, and Wine. Check out the website www.lakeontariowinery.com for details on these classes. Also be sure to look for the Grand Opening events coming this spring for the brewery and cidery.

PRESS RELEASE – NEW MENU
Just step inside this quaint bar & grill and you will be surprised in what you find. This little gem is hidden in a small plaza by the corner of N. Greece Rd. and Latta Rd. When you walk in you will find a beautiful wide open atmosphere with a sit down bar in between the restaurant and bar area. The décor is made up of funny vintage signs and old rock and roll icon pictures accented in warm colors. The menu changes often to stay current with the new trends. Overtime is releasing their newest menu in January with fewer choices while introducing a daily chalkboard. With their newest extremely talented Chef Tyler, they are excited to provide you with daily appetizers, soups, dinner entrees and even desserts that you will not find anywhere else. Overtime will also be adding more selected wine and craft beers to their menu while pairing up with some of the new menu dishes. All of the weekly chalkboard menu items will be shared on What’s Up at The Overtime Grill Facebook Members Group and also on the website. Theovertimegrill.com. If you have not joined the group please do so today so that you can stay current with all of the new exciting changes Overtime has to offer. Friday and Saturday evenings you will find live entertainment starting at 8:30 pm. Acoustic rock, blues, country and pop are some of the venues you can expect to hear. Hours for N. Greece: Sun noon til. Mon through Saturday open every day at 3pm. The Overtime Grill 1 (Dewey Ave) menu will have a new makeover in the near future. But in the meantime you can still enjoy your favorite treats! Hours for Dewey: Open every day at Noon. HILTON • 392-4141 • 610 N. Greece Rd.
