2018 Conservation Tree & Shrub Program Winter has arrived and spring will be knocking at your front door before you know it. To help you prepare for spring, the Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District has released their Conservation Tree and Shrub species list for the spring of 2018. The District has been hosting this annual program for more than 41 years with more than 116,760 trees, shrubs, and plants being distributed in the last 5 years alone. The District is helping communities green up the environment. Property owners will have the opportunity to preorder more than 42 different species of bare-root conifers, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers and groundcovers, as well as seed mixes and other products used for conservation projects at dirt-cheap prices. We have packages of all shapes and sizes, ranging from a bundle of 10 plants for as low as $11, to bundles of 100 plants for as low as $70. We are excited to offer an editable fruit pack so landowners can grow strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and two varieties of blueberry plants for attracting wildlife. Native species new to our program this year are Witchhazel, Gray Dogwood, American Hazelnut and Eastern Sweetshrub. Check out all the benefits of these and our other selections by visiting our website catalog found at: www.monroecountyswcd.org
“By planting trees and shrubs you improve both the aesthetics of your land or backyard and the quality of our environment,” said Karen Ervay, Program Coordinator. “Trees, shrubs and plants help with erosion control, soak up water, help with stormwater runoff and nutrient uptake, as well as improve wildlife habitat,” she explained. They can also assist in keeping your home cool in the summer and break cold winds during our harsh winters all while increasing your property value too. The Conservation Tree & Shrub Program is a pre-order program with a deadline for ordering on March 2, 2018. We have a limited availability for plant stock so in order to ensure we can meet your needs, please order early. The distribution of the plant material will occur at the Monroe County ecopark on April 19-20, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. We will also hold a first come, first serve overstock sale on April 21, 2018 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. for individuals that miss the pre-ordering deadline. Those interested in this program can find the order form and our full color catalog on the District’s website: www.monroecountyswcd.org. If you have any questions or you’d like a form sent to you, contact the Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District at: (585) 753-7380, Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Provided Information

Monroe County’s New Sheriff Todd Baxter by Tami Raco
Monroe County has a new sheriff for the first time since 2001. Todd Baxter, 52, defeated four-term incumbent Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn in the November election with 57% of the votes. Baxter is the first Democratic Sheriff since Sheriff William Lombard who was elected in 1974. Todd Baxter comes to Monroe County Sheriff Department with over 30 years of law enforcement experience. His experience includes 22 years in the Rochester Police Department where he served as Administrative Aide to three Chiefs of Police before leaving to join the Greece Police. Baxter spent four years as Chief of Police in Greece during their time of transition. He also spent 19 years as a member of the SWAT team, finishing his career as a Commander.
Sheriff Baxter’s military experience includes three years of active duty in the US Army (Military Police) and 19 years in the US Army reserve, retiring as a Master Sergeant Brigade, Anti-Terrorism and Training Non-Commissioned Officer. For three years Baxter was Executive Director of the nonprofit Veterans Outreach Center, leaving in April of 2017. Sheriff Baxter was sworn into office on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. He stated that his top three priorities include addressing the opioid epidemic, providing additional rehabilitation opportunities for inmates and increasing transparency within the Sheriff Department. Sheriff Baxter resides in Ogden with his wife Mary and their two sons.

Start the New Year with “Healthy Rules of the Road” by Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC
Would you like to have a healthier and happier home for your family? If so a new book from a local Greece Author and retired Physical Education teacher can help. Wendy Cooper taught Physical Education and Health to the elementary students at English Village since 1988. Her primary goal in her career was to inspire kids to keep moving and stay healthy. Throughout her 30 years of working with elementary aged children she developed a successful program called “Healthy Highway.” Healthy Highway is an innovative curriculum based k-5 program that enriches children’s lives through teaching and encouraging health, fitness and nutrition. Wendy built the program by using imaginative traffic metaphors to help teach children how to make healthy choices. After witnessing the success of the program over the past 15 years in the schools, Wendy wanted to take it a step further to reach the families in their own home. She wrote a book which offers a similar program for families to incorporate into their home and daily life. “Healthy Rules of the Road” is the book written by Wendy Cooper. She designed the book to help educate, motivate and inspire families to make healthy lifestyle choices. Modeling after the success of the Healthy Highway Program, the traffic-themed vocabulary and visual tools in this new book give children and adults a common and easy way to talk about what it means to be healthy. The family friendly program empowers families to “Drive down the Healthy Highway” by learning how to create a road map for your family’s own healthy lifestyle. The program is written as a three month plan to jump start a healthier lifestyle for families with children. It addresses physical activity, healthy eating and even character education. Cooper uses fun language like “high octane food,” “healthy selfies,” “start your engine” and “nutrition rules of the road” to help keep kids engaged and motivated. She also incorporates an adorable dog named “Rev” who is the newest driver on the Healthy Highway. Rev helps teach children and families how he incorporates the “rule of the road” into his everyday choices. “I see Rev’s role as a great teacher that will encourage and empower all that “meet” him to become leaders in designing their own road maps to a healthy lifestyle,” Cooper said. at the request of the Town of Greece Engineering Department. It was placed on the agenda in December, setting forth a hearing to discuss the proposal. The Town Engineer gave a presentation on the Department of Environmental Conservation program that regulates building activity in coastal erosion hazard areas near Lake Ontario. The program requires DEC sign-off on any “regulated activity” in the coastal erosion management zone. The program is designed to protect fragile beaches and dunes and control building in areas vulnerable to flooding and erosion. The current program rules require property owners to obtain permits before moving ahead with construction, grading or other disturbances of soil. The Town of Greece currently administers the program within their own borders rather than leaving it to the State to administer, though they are monitored closely by the DEC. At the close of the presentation, Supervisor Reilich and the Greece Town Board listened carefully to neighbors who reside along the lake and lake front neighborhood groups like the Grandview Beach Neighborhood Association who spoke out and shared their concerns during the hearing. In consideration of the concerns of the lake front neighbors and the overall success the Town of Greece has had ad-

The Eddie Money Story by Karen Fien
Singer, songwriter, musician, playwright, entertainer, extraordinary talents and Eddie Money has them all. Eddie Money created, and will star in, a new musical “Two Tickets to Paradise: The Eddie Money Musical.” The world premier will be held at the Kodak Center, February 14-18, featuring a full orchestra, the Eddie Money band, and a cast of twenty professional actors who dance and sing his life story. The musical is about Eddie Money’s life at a time when the world was changing in the late 1960s when a young man’s choices weren’t always what his dreams were. Eddie Money was born Edward Joseph Mahoney, on March 21, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. Eddie dreamed of being a musician and played in rock bands while in high school. His brother was serving in Vietnam and that was not where he wanted to be after graduation. The band he was in was going out to California, and they wanted him to go with them. His parents wanted him to pursue a career in law enforcement, and follow in his father’s footsteps. He listened to his parents and became a member of the New York City Police Department, knowing that his real dream was to go to California. After working two years for the
New York City Police Department, and many requests from his friends to come to California, he left law enforcement to follow his heart into the music career that he always wanted. He moved to Berkeley, California and began performing in local clubs. He and the band eventually split up, and Money went in another direction with his music. He changed his surname from Mahoney to Money and was discovered by legendary rock promoter Bill Graham who made famous the Fillmore and Winterland Arena rock venues where rock bands like the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin had their proving grounds. Graham saw him performing at his “Sounds of the City” event. Graham became “like a father” to Money and said, “Eddie Money has it all...not only can he sing, write and play, but he is a natural performer.” He got his first record deal with Columbia Records, at age 26 with the help of Graham. Graham was also the one that advised Money about the importance of MTV to his career and encouraged him to produce high quality music videos. Money has always loved music and his love of Broadway started when he was young. His parents went to musicals, such as: “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Carousel” and “Oklaho-

ma.” And brought home the music soundtrack albums from the plays. Eddie and his sisters listened to the albums and sang along with the songs. As an adult Money saw “Jersey Boys” on Broadway. He thought that the musical was fantastic. He saw the similarities between the musicians in “Jersey Boys” and his own band. The music was different but the friendship and charisma was very similar. He was sure he could do something like “Jersey Boys” but with his life, his band and his music. When writing the musical Money said, “You can’t lie to yourself, you have to be honest.” Money also said, “I am more than rock n’ roll and I want people to hear this side of me.” He wrote the Broadway-style songs that will be performed in the play along with some of his biggest hits, “Two Tickets to Paradise,” “Baby Hold On,” “I Wanna Go Back,” “Shakin,””No Control” and “Take Me Home Tonight.” The play is being presented by Rochester Association of Performing Arts (RAPA) along with Eddie Money Entertainment Inc. and Premier Theater Productions. Eddie Money and John Campbell, Executive Producer for Eddie Money, approached RAPA to bring the musical to Rochester and
GreeceNewsNY.com February 2018 19 were excited with the positive response they were given. The musical is under the artistic direction and vision of Eric Vaughn Johnson, Business Manager and Program Director for RAPA. The three men collaborated on the auditions and picked the cast for the production. All of the actors were chosen based on the knowledge Eddie Money and John Campbell that they are committing to a 10week multi-state tour of the play beginning in the month of March. Johnson said, “What is inspiring about this cast is that we have members as young as nine to veteran adults, they are a cohesive unit that work together and are passionate about this production, which helps with the creative process.” Cast members portray Eddie Money, Eddie Money and Eric Vaughn Johnson his parents, sisters, high school bandmates, friends, manager and wife. Alec Nevin leads the cast, as the young Eddie Money. Morgan Troia plays Eddie’s wife Laurie, Dresden Engle plays Eddie’s mother Dottie and Steve Vaughan plays Eddie’s father Dan. Eddie Money narrates the play and performs some of his songs at the conclusion of the play. Johnson said, “The music is unique and specific to this production, all of the Alec Nevin and Eddie Money music needed to continued on page 20

be adapted Broadway-style.” The music and vocal director is Yunjin Kim, and the choreographer is Terri Filips. Johnson, Kim and Jonathan Allentoff have been working on the score for the play since the summer. Kim enhanced the music which had to be written for specific instruments within the orchestra, so that all of the instruments flow together, and marrying them together with Money’s big hits. Allentoff transcribed Money’s rock n’ roll music, Johnson managed the music. Johnson along with Dresden Engle, a cast member, were the leaders of enhancing and editing the script for the musical. Money continues to tour with his rock and roll band while working on the musical. His touring band includes his daughter Jesse who sings back up, and son Julian who plays the drums. Money said he was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey for her “Where Are They Now” series, and as a result Dan Rather interviewed him for his AXS TV interview series. After the Rather interview AXS TV expressed an interest in producing a reality series which resulted in the filming of 10 episodes of the series called “Real Money.” The series stars Eddie and his entire family and features the day to day life of a working rock and roll family. Real Money will begin airing on April 8, on AXS TV. Two Tickets to Paradise: The Eddie Money Musical will run for five performances at the Kodak Center, 200 W. North Greece Fire Department Honors Five Volunteer Firefighters by Tami Raco
Not very often will you find volunteers with 50 years of service. It’s a rarity to find five volunteers with over 50 years of service all in one Fire Department. The North Greece Department is fortunate to have that opportunity to celebrate five of their volunteer firemen for a lifetime of service and dedication to the Greece community. Eugene Preston joined the North Greece Fire Department in 1961 and is the longest active member in the department with 56 years of active service. Many families may recognize Eugene as the man behind the kid’s poster contest. Eugene has spent many years as the driving force behind the kid’s fire prevention program with the poster contest in the schools. Eugene served on countless committees, activities and fundraisers. He served as the President of the Fire Department, served on the District Board of Fire Commissioners, and as a member of numerous Firematic organizations including Monroe County Fire Chiefs, Monroe County Fire District Officers Association, IAFF, and FASNY. He was the President of the Greece Fire Council. Eugene is the owner of one of the finest fire memorabilia collections in NYS. It can be seen at the Greece Historical Society. Eugene grew up on his family farm on Long Pond Road and built his home there where he and his wife Pat raised their three children. Kenneth Preston joined North Greece Fire in 1962 and has been serving the department for 55 years. Ken served on numerous committees, activities and fundraisers. He was the President of the Fire Department and served as President to both the Town of Greece Fire Counsel and North Greece Exempts Firemen’s Association. Ken served as President and Treasurer of Monroe County Fire District Officers Association. For 32 years Ken served on the North Greece Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners. In 2013 he was awarded the Monroe County Joint Fire Service Leadership Meritorious Award. Ken continues serving as one of the most active members in the Department and is also a member of the North Greece Fire Police. He is 2nd Vice President of AFDSNY where he has also served as the Region 5 Direction. Ken continues to work actively on state legislation and rules for fire districts and is very involved on state legislation. Ken is a lifelong resident of Greece with his wife Donna where they raised their two children. Michael Beaty has been with North Greece FD since 1965. In his 52 years of service Michael served on many committees, activities and fundraisers. He has received numerous certifiMichael Beaty

cates from county and state training classes. Michael served as Lieutenant and Captain and was a member of several Officer Associations. He served as Assistant and Deputy Chief at the NGFD and as President of the North Greece Exempts Benevolent Association in addition to serving on the NG Board of Directors for over 30 years. Michael continues as a very active member of the department and apparatus drivers. He is a lifelong resident of Greece where he and his wife Linda raised their three children. Sherman Manchester, Jr. just reached his 52 year anniversary with North Greece FD. He joined in January of 1966. Sherman has an abundance of knowledge in the Fire Department with many certifications and a degree in Fire Protection. Sherman served as a Line Officer, Deputy Chief and Chief and he served on NGFD Board of Fire Commissioners. Sherman held membership at many associations including the International Association of Fire Chiefs, New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, Monroe County Fire Chiefs, and National Fire Protection Association. As the In-
GreeceNewsNY.com February 2018 23 cident Command Instructor, Sherman was instrumental in training hundreds of Police, Fire and EMS. He also helped create the first NGFD Standard Operating Procedure books. Sherman is the Ontario County Safety Coordinator, OSHA Outreach Instructor and President of the Ontario County Safety Council. During Sherman’s career he was the Chief of the Kodak Park Fire Department and Interim Chief of Canandaigua Fire Department. He continues as an active member at the NGFD. Sherman is a lifelong resident of Greece where he and his wife Mary Jane raised their eight children. Thomas Piazza joined the NGFD in December of 1967 and just reached his 50 year anniversary. Tom served on and chaired many committees, activities and fundraisers. He has a vast amount of certifications from local, county, state and national training seminars. Tom served as a Line Officer, Assistant and Deputy Chief and Fire Chief. He served on both the North Greece Board of Directors and on the North Greece Board of Fire Commissioners. He served on numerous Firematic organizations such as Monroe County Fire Chiefs, Monroe County Fire District Officers Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, a life member of NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, and Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. One of Tom’s most memorable service memories is being Chief during the infamous ice storm of 1991. Tom received the Meritorious Service Award from the Rochester Safety Council in 1996 and was presented with the North Greece distinguished service award in 2014. Tom continues actively serving the department and is an apparatus driver. He is retired as the Battalion Chief from his career at Kodak Park Fire Department. He has lived in Greece for over 55 years with his wife Joanne. Tom reflects on his lifelong service at NGFD and he says, “It led to everything.” By taking the initiative to volunteer it led to his career and how he met his wife. Volunteering at the NGFD was the first step to the path that really set his life in motion. A Renaissance for Greece Performing Arts continues in 2018 In December 2016, the Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) appointed Eric Vaughn Johnson as the new President to bring new ideas, programs and partnerships to the organization. Over the last year, the 300-person performing membership has blossomed in an artistic and financial renaissance. GPAS’s 2017 schedule included many new opportunities: The Next Chapter Media Event and Concert, the first annual Summer Soiree, the re-opening of the Greece Theatre Company with the upstate New York premiere of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and the resurrected Young Artists Competition. Additionally, in 2017 the non-profit performing arts organization continued its on-going concerts throughout
Greece and the greater Rochester area. GPAS was represented at downtown events including Corn Hill Arts Festival, M&T Clothesline Festival at the Memorial Art Gallery and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, as well as at several Rochester Red Wings games. The on-going GPAS Holiday Wrapping Booth fundraiser at the Mall at Greece Ridge made the largest profit since its inception in the past 20 years. However, Johnson is not stopping here and he has several new plans for 2018. GPAS Spring Concert In March, GPAS will be grooving to a whole new beat with Good Vibrations Concert: Hits of the 1960s. Taste of the Bahamas Restaurant by Barbara Burke
Authentic Bahamian cuisine is the focus of the dishes and drinks available at Taste of the Bahamas Restaurant located at 4705 Lake Avenue in Rochester. Owner Dotti Perry opened her new restaurant in November of 2017. She formerly operated out of a place on North Street in Rochester but when she outgrew the space she moved to the Lake Avenue location. “I searched and searched on the internet for a new place that would meet all my needs. I kept my focus and found the Lake Avenue location. It has everything I needed and just the right atmosphere. One thing I didn’t realize is that opening on Lake Avenue in the winter is tough. I am encouraged by all of the businesses around who are supporting my restaurant and they tell me that the neighborhood has lots of activity during the summer months,” Dotti said. Dotti has vast experience in the restaurant business. She has worked in many restaurant and bars doing just about every job from hostess to bartender and brings all of that knowledge to Taste of the Bahamas. During her early years, between restaurant jobs Dotti was a stay at home mom. “I sold dinners from my home and developed my cooking skills. I later rented space in other businesses and served my food from there, just to get my dishes and name out there. When it came time to achieve my dream by opening my restaurant I did research on how to open your own restaurant and studied all the rules and regulations. I really believe that nothing in life is unachievable, you just have to keep trying and fight for it,” she said. The cuisine at Taste of the Bahamas Restaurant is unique and authentic. Dotti grinds all of the seasonings for all of their food and uses fresh produce in her recipes. Some of the speciality dishes include their popular Conch Fritters, Mac and Cheese, Curry Chicken, Pepper Steak and their
award winning Ribs. “Our Mac and Cheese is Bahamian style and seasoned with our own ground fresh spices, it is always a surprise to people who try it for the first time and it is definitely a customer favorite,” Dotti said. Taste of the Bahamas Restaurant also has a full bar and offers speciality drinks that are traditional Bahamian beverages including Gullywash and Bahamian Punch. They have signature drinks that Dotti developed - for the ladies “Ladies Choice” and for the men “Dirty Bird.” Dotti has had some challenges in her life and she has not forgotten all of the help she has received from police officers, fire fighters and the military. As a gesture to payback, Taste of the Bahamas offers a 12% discount everyday to all those who serve in these jobs. “I have been helped by police officers who have shown me great kindness. And we experienced a house fire and fire fighters saved my life and the lives of my children. I know that those who serve in the military put their life on the line everyday for our freedom. We appreciate and see everything that they do. All through my life these people have been good luck to me and I am so thankful,” Dotti said. Taste of the Bahamas serves Lunch and Dinner Tuesday thru Saturday from 1PM to 10PM; and on Sunday Lunch from 1PM-6PM. Call 585-270-4889 for more information.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope you have been staying safe and warm this cold wintery season! Though chilly, winter can be such a fun time of year, complete with hot cocoa, ice skating, winter wonderland scenery, and fun community activities. We are in full swing here at Greece Town Hall when it comes to Winter events. These past couple month we have hosted new business ribbon-cutting ceremonies, held community flu clinics, joined the Community and Senior Center for Christmas parties, and hosted our annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Family Christmas Party. Throughout my time as Supervisor, one of my top priorities has been to make Greece a business- friendly town. I have welcomed many new and expanding businesses to the Town these past four years, the most recent being the highly-anticipated Chick-Fil-A. This Georgia-based fast food chain will include two drive-thru ordering lanes, a two-story playground for children, both indoor and outdoor seating, and is expected to employ over 100 people. I am very excited that Greece was chosen to be the location for the first Chick-Fil-A in Rochester, and I want to wish owner Alan Taylor and his team great success! I was excited to yet again host a good old fashioned lighting of the Town’s Christmas Tree and Family Party this past holiday season. This annual event boasted a great crowd

New Greece Elected Officials The 2018 Town of Greece Organizational Meeting was held on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 and the first order of business was to swear in the new elected officials that will be serving the residents in the 2nd and 3rd Wards as well as our new Receiver of Taxes, Andrew Conlon. Serving the 2nd Ward will be William Murphy. Councilman Murphy will begin his first term replacing former Councilman Brett Granville who was successful in his bid for Greece Town Justice. Murphy, a former Greece Police Officer and former Chief of the Holley Police Department, will bring his experience in public safety and community service to Town Hall. Murphy was joined by family members, including his wife, Cindy, and his son, Paul, who held the Bible, as he pledged to serve the residents in the 2nd Ward to the best of his ability. Another new elected official, Joshua Jensen, will be representing residents living in the 3rd Ward. Andrew Conlon has held this seat previously. Councilman Jensen was joined by his wife, Casey, who held the bible, and his family as Supervisor Reilich delivered the oath of office. Councilman Jensen has served on our Traffic Advisory Committee and is a member of Senator Joe Robach’s staff. Taking on his position early in order to assist residents with the pre-payment of 2018 Town and County Taxes, Former Councilman and now Greece Receiver of Taxes Andrew Conlon was sworn into office by Former Greece Receiver of Taxes Kathleen Taylor. Heather Halstead held the Bible for Andrew with his family by his side. Councilman Conlon has been a strong advocate for the residents in the 3rd Ward and will now be serving residents throughout the entire town. At the conclusion of the Organization Meeting, the new Town Board members joined in for the first Agenda Review Workshop, which followed immediately after the Organizational Meeting. All meeting dates and times are posted on the Town of Greece website. Provided Information and Photos Supervisor Bill Reilich, Councilman Joshua Jensen, Mother Betsy Jensen, and Father Randy Jensen.
