Girls on the Run spring coaching opportunities
Girls on the Run of Greater Rochester’s spring coach registration is now open. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that inspires girls in third through eighth grade to be joyful, healthy and confident. The ten-week program incorporates running to teach critical life skills, encourage personal development and foster team building and community service. Volunteer coaches utilize a curriculum to engage teams of girls in fun, interactive lessons. Teams meet twice a week for 75 to 90 minutes and the program culminates with all teams participating in a 5K event.
Girls on the Run of Greater Rochester currently serves girls at 78 sites in Monroe, Ontario, Wayne and Livingston counties. Volunteers provide critical leadership and the non-profit organiza-
tion is currently seeking coaches to facilitate the program.
Coaches do not need to be runners but are required to be a minimum of 18 years old to serve as an assistant or 21 years old to serve as a head coach. All volunteer coaches must complete a background check and attend a training session.

Damar Hamlin launches
3forHeart CPR Challenge
When seconds matter most, CPR means the difference between life and death, a fact that Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin personally understands. Unfortunately, most people who have a cardiac arrest aren’t surrounded by people trained in CPR like Hamlin was when he collapsed during a televised Monday night game in early January. That is why Hamlin is launching his #3forHeart CPR Challenge aimed at saving more lives through CPR education and training with the American Heart Association.
Hamlin hopes to use his experience to educate people about importance of CPR and inspire them to learn Hands-Only CPR – a quick, easy to learn lifesaving skill. Hamlin’s #3forHeart CPR Challenge is an exciting, yet simple social media challenge with three steps
•1 – LEARN: Go to https://heart.org/3 to watch a 60-second video to learn Hands-Only CPR
•2 – GIVE: Donate to the American Heart Association to fund CPR education and training, and other lifesaving programs and scientific research.
•3 – SHARE: Use #3forHeart to challenge three friends to do the same on social media.
To kick off the campaign, Hamlin challenged NBA legend LeBron James, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
“I’m excited to be teaming up with the American Heart Association,” said Damar Hamlin. “It’s going to be an amazing opportunity to impact and educate millions of people on the importance of CPR. It literally saved my life.”
“The world watched in fear when Damar collapsed during that game,” said Nancy Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the American Heart Association. “But if you follow his advice, you can become a lifesaver in three steps, and you’ll know what to do in
the event an adult or teen suddenly collapses in your presence. Because most cardiac arrests that happen outside of a hospital occur in the home, the life you save will most likely be a loved one. The volunteers, supporters and staff of the American Heart Association are so grateful that he is paying it forward and helping ensure others also have a better chance for a positive outcome.”
CPR – or cardiopulmonary resuscitation – is performed when the heart stops beating and, especially if started immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. People are encouraged to participate in all three steps to learn and promote education of Hands-Only CPR. Hands-Only CPR is a skill everyone can learn. It is as simple as, calling 911 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse; and then pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest.

Greece Post 468 Polar Cubs Top Fundraising Team for 2023 Rochester Polar Plunge
gion Auxiliary decided to participate in the Polar Plunge event.
lar
$2,700
This year’s Polar Cubs team had 55 members, representing all of the organizations at the Greece American Legion, with 23 of those members taking the plunge into Lake Ontario.
At this year’s Rochester Polar Plunge held on February 5, 2023, Post 468 Polar Cubs were the Top Fundraising Team overall, raising over $18,000. Typically, one of the top five fundraising teams each year, the team is very proud of the amount raised for this year’s event, and set a goal to do even better in 2024. The team was also the top fundraising team in 2018 Polar Plunge.
During the 2021 and 2022 COVID pandemic, the Polar Plunge was cancelled. The Polar Cubs Team decided it was too important to let a year go by and not fundraise for the charity, the Rochester Area Special Olympics. With the help of the Barnard Fire Department, the Polar Cubs still got wet! The firefighters set up their hoses to spray the team as they ran under the water. This was accomplished both years, in 2021 and 2022 when the official Polar Plunge event was cancelled.
Throughout the year The American Legion Post 468 holds many events to raise money, from euchre tournament to painting classes. Members also seek donations from family, friends and co-workers to support the charity. Many Legion members have friends or family who have participated in Special Olympics through the years. This year, one of the team members who is now living in Florida, flew in to take the plunge and was awarded the, “Plunger Who Traveled Farthest” honor.
The Rochester Polar Plunge was first held in 2001 and is the largest in New York State. The event benefits Special Olympics New York and supports their Programs and Services.
The members of Post 468 Polar Cubs are proud to support such a wonderful program.

Positive Patient Outcomes
Many patients have already benefited from the use of the Stryker Lucas chest compression device. Cardiac arrest patients may not respond to CPR and defibrillation alone. The Lucas device allows for continued compressions while additional advanced lifesaving therapies can be administered. Community Support
This $18,648.94 purchase was made possible by the community’s support during our Bands of Barnard Concert Series and our annual fund drive. This device is the latest purchase by the Barnard Fire Department in our continued commitment to give back to our residents.
Barnard Fire

The latest All-America Selections
flowers and vegetables
by Kristina GabalskiIf you’ve started the search for your 2023 garden seeds, you’ve seen the red, white, and blue All-America Selections (AAS) logo in seed catalogs on pictures of certain varieties of perennials, flowers, and vegetables. Since 1932, the AAS logo on a photo has meant that judges from across North America have tested the new variety and deemed it has proven superior qualities. This can be helpful to home growers as they strive to pick the best flowers and vegetables for their gardens.
by Kristina GabalskiSalvia Blue by You is also a perennial and sports rich blue flowers that bloom up to two weeks earlier than similar plants. This looks like a great selection for Western New York as it has excellent winter hardiness as well as heat tolerance, blooming from late spring into early fall. Remove spent flowers for repeat bloom. It is resistant to deer and rabbits and is available as a plant only.
Snapdragon Double Shot Orange Bicolor is a stunner with openfaced double flowers in shades of orange and orange-red. This plant is part of a new series of intermediate-height snapdragons with strong, well-branched stems which produce more blooms than similar type snapdragons. It grows 18 to 20 inches in height.
According to AAS, winners are determined by independent judges who look for significantly improved qualities in never before sold varieties. Judges look for earliness to bloom or harvest, disease or pest tolerance, novel colors of flowers, novel flower forms, total yield, length of flower or harvest, and overall performance in picking the most outstanding new varieties.
Winners are announced three times each year and the latest round of winners includes a mix of nine flowers, foliage plants, and vegetables.
Coleus Premium Sun Coral Candy is the first ever coleus from seed to win AAS designation. Plants are compact with unique multicolored foliage. Leaves are narrow and serrated and hold their color well, even in full sun. Mounded plants grow 10 to 16 inches high.
Another foliage plant, Colocasia Royal Hawaiian Waikiki – also known as elephant ears – has glossy leaves with bold coloration. Growing to 36 inches in height and width, the leaves feature pink veins and creamy centers. They can be grown in full-sun or large containers and are available only in plant form, not seed.
For perennial lovers, Echinacea Artisan Yellow Ombre has unusual golden yellow blooms all season. Available as seed, this echinacea has a uniform growth habit and multiple branches which produce large numbers of blooms.
Another flowering perennial, Leucanthemum Carpet Angel is a Shasta Daisy which grows to a height of six inches. This is the firstever perennial ground cover to be selected by AAS, and spreads up to 20 inches. It features pure white blooms which look like angels dancing over a carpet of dark green foliage. It is available
Veggie growers will want to seek-out Pepper Cayenne Wildcat with thick flesh walls, a smoky flavor, peppery sweetness, and a mild pungency. High-yielding plants produce eight-inch fruits which are straighter than traditional cayenne peppers.
Pepper Jalapeno San Joaquin is a super choice for gardeners who like to can, pickle, or make roasted stuffed jalapeños for summer parties. Most of the fruit is set in a short window, with each plant producing about 50 fruits with a hint of heat.
Squash Kabocha Sweet Jade admittedly has dry flesh, but it is sweet and rich in taste. Plants produce high yields of single-serving sized squash with a deep orange flesh. Bake, roast, or puree.
If you’ve been waiting for a tomato selection, Tomato Zenzei is it. This high-yielding Roma has fruit that ripens 70 to 80 days from transplanting, and the bushy and uniformly-shaped plants are easy to harvest. Zenzei is disease resistant, being less prone to blossom end rot issues than some Roma types. The fruits are meaty and flavorful.
Finally, if you’ve been searching for the perfect watermelon, Rubyfirm may be one to try. The fruits are small – about the size of a cantaloupe. The bright pink flesh is crispy and very sweet with minimal seeds. Plants yield two to three fruits per vine.
