Victoria Velyk Cosmetology (Hilton) Taylor Wilson New Visions Health Professions (Hilton)
The Monroe 2-Orleans Educational Foundation funds scholarships and awards for students for whom alternative programs have “made all the difference.” The nature of what the Educational Foundation aspires to celebrate is unique. Make All the Difference applicants are not asked to measure themselves against a single standard of achievement and potential. Rather, they are asked to show how alternative education has made a significant difference in their lives, how they have made a difference for themselves, and how the partnership between themselves and their eligible programs will make a difference for their future. Make All the Difference Scholarships and Awards recognize outstanding examples of how the convergence of alternative education programs, dedicated staff, and engaged students can Make All the Difference in a student’s life, in ways that general education is not designed to do.

Second annual Billy Mason Memorial Scholarship awarded
The Board of Directors of the Billy Mason Memorial Foundation has named Mckenna Hussar as the recipient of a $2,500 scholarship awarded in Billy’s memory. Billy was a well-known Spencerport resident and threesport star at Spencerport High School from 1969 to 1971. After his untimely death in May of 2021, friends and family established the Foundation in his memory.
The Billy Mason Memorial Scholarship Fund honors Billy’s commitment to athletic excellence, leadership, work ethic and personal integrity, and the Foundation hopes to help young athletes and students fulfill their potential while exhibiting the same characteristics that Billy embodied.
Ms. Chelsea Antosh, mathematics teacher and girls JV soccer coach says, “Throughout Mckenna’s time at Spencerport and my time of knowing her, three distinct words come to mind: focus, grit, and heart. As an extremely goal-oriented person, Mckenna has consistently demonstrated a
tremendous work ethic and drive to achieve both her academic and athletic goals.”
Tara Pittman, girls lacrosse varsity coach, says “Mckenna missed her entire lacrosse season last year due to a torn ACL. She was at every game and practice to support her team in a different role. She worked tirelessly in rehab and physical therapy so she could come back this year stronger than ever.”
Mckenna is on high honor roll and a member of the National Honor Society. She signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Utica University where she intends to study physical therapy.

CollegeFEST returning in September to connect college students and employers
CampusROC, a Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce program, will host the 3rd Annual CollegeFEST on Saturday, September 23, at Innovation Square in Downtown Rochester. Promised to be “the best five hours in #GreaterROC” for local college students and recent alumni, this event is back and better than ever by providing expanded opportunities to connect with students for internships, micro-internships, co-ops, and full-time employment.
Over 1,000 students from Greater Rochester’s 19 colleges and universities are expected to attend. Greater Rochester’s higher educa-
tion organizations produce highly skilled students ready to enter the workforce. The festival allows students and employers to connect in a fun, dynamic, and engaging way that is anything but your typical career fair. CollegeFEST 2023 is expanding to be inside and outside at Innovation Square this year in order to host more employers and students than in previous years. Outside will feature games for students, live entertainment, food trucks, and hands-on activities from #GreaterROC businesses and organizations, while inside will feature a revamped employer area as well as lounges for students and special interest groups including veterans and international students. A new employer workshop series is aimed at educating employers on how to hire diverse talent including veteran students, international students, and neurodiverse students. There will also be a
top sponsor lounge and map to highlight the employers and activities present.
“We are thrilled to announce the return of CollegeFEST for its highly anticipated third year, providing an incredible platform for college students and employers to connect in a vibrant atmosphere,” said Julia Pagano, Talent Strategy Manager, Events & Outreach at Greater Rochester Chamber. “With its dynamic lineup of networking opportunities and engaging employer showcases, CollegeFEST promises to empower students while offering employers access to a pool of exceptional talent from diverse academic backgrounds.”
“CollegeFEST plays a vital role in bridging the gap between our talented college students and local employers, creating valuable connections that can lead to meaningful career opportunities,” said Bob Duffy, President and CEO of Greater Rochester Chamber.
“By fostering these connections, we not only strengthen our local workforce, but also enhance the overall economic development of Greater Rochester. Retaining college students in our region is crucial for our continued growth, and events like CollegeFEST provide a platform for students to explore the diverse array of career prospects available right here in our community.”
Students interested in participating can register to attend at www.tinyurl.com/ CollegeFEST2023.
Sponsorship opportunities are open now for corporate partners and higher education partners looking to support the event and connect with students at the festival. More information is available at CampusROC. org/collegefest.

How college students can better manage their time
Many people have a lot of demands on their time. There are only so many hours in a day, which means that the sooner a person can develop strategies for managing his or her time efficiently and effectively, the more successful that person can be.
It can be especially important for college students to explore ways to improve their time management skills early in their academic careers. Time management involves planning, and that includes allotting time for specific tasks. The following strategies can be useful for anyone looking to manage their time more effectively.
Establish a daily schedule
Staying the course may require a guideline detailing how you will spend your time. A good part of the day may be taken up by classes and assignments, but focusing on the other parts of the day also is key. Set up a plan for how you will treat each day. Block off specific times for exercise, meals, school, study, and any other responsibilities you have. Time blocking is a format by which you go through the moments of the day. You can block out by the hour or any amount of time you need.
Figure out where you’re losing time
You need to know how you’re currently spending your time before you can improve on time management strategies. Spend a few days jotting down a time log. This will help you determine if you’re working efficiently or where you are losing time.
Make time for breaks
Burnout can occur when you work yourself too hard. That makes breaks an important part of time management. Breaks allow for time to call loved ones, text with friends, meditate, or engage in other activities unrelated to school. According to sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman, people’s minds naturally crave breaks after 90 minutes of intense work. You may need breaks at different intervals. Learn to read your body’s cues.

Break projects down
Many students avoid projects they feel are huge tasks. Breaking down the larger job into smaller ones can help students stay focused and reward progress. For example, if you need to write a 50-page research paper, make the first task finding source material, the next citing quotes and studies, and then resolve to write a set number of pages per day.
Schedule classes wisely
Some people are night owls while others thrive in the morning. Set up schedules so you’re in class when you are at your most productive; otherwise, you could lag and waste time.
Time management is an important skill for students to develop. It will help in the classroom and later on when entering the workforce.
Hilton senior awarded Falcon Foundation Scholarship
Sarah Williams, a senior at Hilton High School, has been awarded a Falcon Foundation Scholarship from her application to the United States Air Force Academy.
According to its website, the Falcon Foundation recognizes that many deserving young people might need additional academic preparation to help them realize their potential for an Academy education and Air Force or Space Force career. To meet this need, the Foundation provides annual scholarship grants to specially selected civilian junior college and preparatory schools throughout the country.
Sarah was one of the over 10,000 applicants seeking appointment to the Air Force Academy. While this year’s numbers aren’t yet available, 1,416 were ultimately admitted into the Academy last year and only 71 scholarships were awarded, so it is an honor to receive the Falcon Scholarship.
Sarah has chosen Georgia Military College and will begin her training in August in pursuit of her appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Provided information and photo
Margaret A. McGrath Charitable Foundation awards scholarships to Hamlin and Sweden students
The Margaret A. McGrath Charitable Foundation announced the awarding of 14 scholarships totaling $85,000 to local students for the 2023-2024 academic school year. This surpasses the one million dollar mark in awards since 2005; and, has provided scholarships for over 116 students in the Towns of Sweden and Hamlin since its inception.
The Foundation offers two types of scholarships to residents of the Towns of Sweden and Hamlin. The Philip and Margaret Dollard Business Scholarship is awarded to those majoring in Business and the Marie Dollard McGrath Elementary Education Scholarship is awarded to those majoring in elementary education. Scholarships are for undergraduate and graduate degrees.
This year’s recipients of the Philip and Margaret Dollard Business Scholarship are:
•Hayden Cook (Sweden) - St. Bonaventure
University
•Jenna Cring (Hamlin) - SUNY Brockport
•Owen Gardner (Sweden) - St. John Fisher University
•Jenna McNulty (Hamlin) - RIT

Gift ideas for high school grads
Graduation parties will soon follow commencement ceremonies for the class of 2023. For party guests, that means finding the right gifts for grads.
Some high school graduates will continue their studies at colleges and universities. Others may pursue careers in various trades. Still, some graduates may be ready to enter the workforce right away. No matter the direction, these gifts can treat graduates to something special.
Travel accessories
Graduates may want to go on a trip before they take the next step in their lives. Quality travel gear is a worthy investment. Select luggage that won’t exceed airport carry-on limits so grads can cut the baggage check lines when they dart away to locales near or far. Carry-on bags also fit easily in bus cargo areas or in the trunks of cars. Pair the gifts with standard or digital luggage tags.
Streaming TV device
While it’s certainly possible to watch favorite shows or films on mobile devices, viewing is that much clearer on televisions. Rather than graduates having to invest in cable television wherever they go, streaming devices like AppleTV or Roku are portable, which means they can be used at home, in a dorm room or on vacation.
Secured credit card
Individuals typically are eligible to apply for credit cards once they reach age 18, which is the age most students are when they graduate high school. Credit cards are one
method of establishing solid credit, so it can be beneficial for a teen to have one. But it can be challenging for individuals with no credit histories to get approval. A secured card, according to CapitalOne, is a credit card that requires money deposited with the credit card issuer in order to open the account. This security deposit is held by the issuer as long as the account is open. Often the security deposit is the same as the credit limit. Gift-givers can help establish secured cards for grads by providing the funds for the security deposits.
Wireless earbuds or headphones
Upgrade grads’ audio with the newest wireless earbuds or headphones. This way they can take them to the gym or use them to listen to shows or music while sharing spaces with others, including college roommates.
Smartphone wallet case
Teenagers are seldom without their phones. A smartphone wallet case enables graduates to stash IDs, credit or debit cards and some cash into specially designed pockets built into the phone cases. This keeps all essentials in one spot.
Framed memorabilia
Whether a graduate was a star athlete or a premier member of the marching band, giftgivers can provide special memories of time spent in school. Frame ticket stubs, sports jerseys, show programs, or other memorabilia that commemorates a graduate’s glory days at their alma mater.
(Metro)
•Jerry Zhang (Sweden) - Northeastern University
•Christopher Benedict (Sweden) - Nazareth College
The recipients of the Marie Dollard McGrath Elementary Education Scholarship are:
•Allison Cring (Hamlin) - SUNY Brockport
•Jenna Rivera (Sweden) - Roberts Wesleyan University
•Cora Rose (Hamlin) - University of Rochester
•Kasi Williams (Hamlin) - SUNY Fredonia
Margaret A. McGrath established the Foundation in 2004 under her will to provide scholarships to residents of the towns of Sweden and Hamlin who have chosen to pursue a degree in either Business or Elementary Education. The Foundation has awarded $1,059,000 in scholarships since its formation.
Qualifying 2024 graduating high school seniors and current college students should submit applications for the 2024-2025 academic year by March 1, 2024. For further information, contact Richard J. Dollard, Executive Director and Trustee, at 585-637-7170 or visit www.frontiernet.net/~mcgrathfound. Provided information
