White Christmas Greece actors shine in OFC’s December musical, the holiday classic, White Christmas by Barbara Burke

As part of their Broadway in Brighton Series, White Christmas, with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin, will take the OFC Creations Theatre Center stage, December 7th thru 23rd, 2023. The play’s storyline is based on the timeless 1954 film starring Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen, and features the Irving Berlin songs, “Blue Skies,” “Sisters,” “I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm,” and the abiding, “White Christmas.” For those who aren’t familiar, the story is summed up on OFC’s website as, “A timeless tale of joy and goodwill. White Christmas is filled with nostalgic songs, glorious dancing, and lots of snow! Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-anddance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. White Christmas is an uplifting, wholesome musical that will delight audiences of all ages.” Eric Schutt grew up in Greece. He attended Arcadia Middle and High Schools. Eric’s theatre life began his first year of middle school, with a part in Cinderella. After his freshman year of High School, Eric was encouraged to participate in a summer show with the Westside Theatre Group. The play was, The Pajama Game. “After that summer, I knew what I wanted to do,” Eric said. In 2017, his first year out of college, Eric had a part in the OFC production, Wild Party. Since then, he has been in at least one production a year, at OFC. He has also taken on teaching roles and worked with summer stock at OFC. In White Christmas, Eric plays the lead role of Bob Wallace, the

Bing Crosby part in the film. “The first time I saw the film White Christmas I was in high school. It has been on my radar since. I have a very good feeling about this production. It has some of the most impressive musical numbers that I have ever seen. It really helps that I already know the songs. I have avoided watching the movie so that I can present my own interpretation of Bob Wallace,” he said. And how does Eric Schutt see Wallace’s character? “Bob Wallace is someone who is buttoned up. He knows what he wants in life. I play him with a little bit of humor, and as a man whose idea of romance is flipped on its head when he meets Betty Haynes.” Michael King grew up in Greece, and attended Greece Athena Middle and High Schools. Michael’s connection with musical theatre and dance comes through his older sister. She was a dancer when they were growing up. He said, “In middle school I started auditioning for shows and I got in. I made friends there. I started dancing at the same school where my sister studied dance. I’ve been dancing ever since. I graduated from Nazareth with a degree in Musical Theatre.” Michael’s affiliation with OFC began in August. He has had parts in two other OFC productions, Dancemums and Rocky Horror Show. In White Christmas, Michael performs as part of the dance ensemble. He is also the dance captain. As a dancer, Michael participates in all of the dance numbers in the play, including partner, tap and musical theatre. As dance captain, he is responsible for coordination of the dancers on stage, and works closely with the choreographer. He directs communication between the dancers and the choreographer. continued on page 11

Michael has seen the film version of White Christmas many times. He said, “The music in this production of White Christmas is bigger than in the film. It has the essence of the movie performances, but the musical numbers here have a huge Broadway style element. If you need inspiration as a dancer, you can always look to the performances and performers in this film. They have a great vibe. You can learn so many dance styles, especially how to dance with a partner, and keep the flow going without being stiff. I am very impressed with this production of White Christmas. It is very challenging as a dancer because it includes a wide variety of dance styles and numbers, and it’s our job to make it look easy.” White Christmas is under the direction of Eric Vaughn Johnson, OFC’s Executive Director. Eric said, “What’s different this year is that we have the Broadway in Brighton Series, where we bring in talent from across the country to perform in a series of six of our productions. We are taking the next step in theatre production. White Christmas was a natural choice for this OFC series. It is a holiday classic, with all the nostalgia. You can let go of your troubles. It shows the importance of being around the people you love. The movie is from 70 years ago, but the message is still valid today,” Eric said.

Little Christmas Tree While working at Kodak in the 1990s, North Greece resident, Shari Neu, was chairperson for the Kodak Native American Club. It was through the club that she met co-worker, Jim Snow. Snow sent this short story, “Little Christmas Tree,” to Shari. He requested that she share the story. Over the years, the story has become very important to Shari, she said, “I’ve always loved this story and wanted it to be seen by other people. I get it out each year at Christmas time, I read it to the kids, and share it every chance I get.”

Little Christmas Tree by Jim Snow

Little silent Christmas tree, you are so little, you are more like a flower. Who found you in the green forest and were you very sorry to come away? See…. I will comfort you because you smell so sweetly. I will kiss your cool bark and hug you safe and tight just as your mother would, only don’t be afraid. Look! The spangler that sleeps all year in a dark box, dreaming of being taken out and allowed to shine. The balls, the chains, red and gold, the fluffy threads. Put up your little arms and I’ll give them all to you to hold. Every finger shall have its ring and there won’t be a single place dark or unhappy. Then when you’re quite dressed, you’ll stand in the window for everyone to see and how they’ll stare! Oh, but you’ll be very proud. And my little sister and I will take hands and looking up at our beautiful tree... we’ll dance and sing…. “Noel” “Noel” Merry Christmas everyone! Provided Information

White Christmas Set Design is by John Haldoupis, the owner of A Horse with Wings, who designed the entirety of OFC’s The Old Farm Cafe. “John is a master mind of art, all kinds of art. White Christmas is an over the top production, and that is what we get with John. He has created beautiful sets, and has brought in some very special pieces for this production,” Eric said. The costumes also take their inspiration from the movie. They are bright, in the colors of the season. Eric’s approach to direction of White Christmas is to bring a breath of fresh air. “I didn’t want to copy the film. You will feel everything that you love about the story, but with a bit more modern touch. It is a rebirth. There are huge dance numbers throughout, some seven minutes long, with lots of tap dance. There are less than 20 people in cast, and they play all of the parts. The actors and dancers are working very hard. It is a real company piece.” With music direction by Teressa Bala and choreography by Caeli Carroll, White Christmas performances will be Thursdays through Sundays three weeks during the month of December, December 7th through the 23rd. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich As we enter the midst of the holiday season, I reflect back on all we have to be thankful for. Personally, I am so grateful to be Supervisor of our great town. It is a duty I do not take lightly, and it is a privilege to serve each and every one of you. I would like to remind residents of our Winter Parking Ordinance, which is enforced November 1 – April 15 from midnight to 8:00am. This allows for safer and more effective plowing and salting of dedicated town streets and helps keep the cost of snow removal down, saving tax dollars for our residents. We’ve been hosting many fun events at our Community Center as the center nears the end of renovations. Our most

recent event was the Annual Thanksgiving Party. Many residents came out for the festivities and were treated to live entertainment and a Thanksgiving meal! We are excited that our Greece Public Library will be receiving a face lift! Our current library features very high shelving throughout the building, this makes it very difficult for staff to have a clear visual of the space our current plan is to feature lower shelving, the same that was placed in the Story Garden. Additionally, the lighting will be completely replaced in the space as well, new decorative lighting features are planned as well as the total conversion to LED lighting to further save on our utility costs which in turn will provide up to 75% brighter lights than those that are currently in place. I hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving, and I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and New Year! Stay safe and healthy, Greece!

Avoiding car-animal crashes Deer hunting season is underway and will stir the deer population, which is already active due to mating season. AAA is warning motorists to buckle up, be extra cautious on the roads, and scan for deer and other animals. AAA analyzed New York crash data and found that October, November, and December are by far the peak months for animal crashes, notably deer, in the Empire State. There were 36,743 animal-related crashes statewide in 2022 – up 7% from 2021 – that’s equivalent to one animal-related crash every 15 minutes. Monroe County had the second highest number of animal crashes in the state. Motorists should be especially vigilant at sunrise and sunset. Deer crashes often occur outside daylight hours. Crashes are most common near sunset and in the evening. AAA offers the following tips for avoiding or mitigating deer crashes: •Scan the shoulders of the road in front of you. Deer may dash out from the shoulder or wooded areas adjacent to the road. They often travel in herds. •Follow the speed limit. Lower speed will give you more time to respond to unexpected wildlife movements. •If a collision is unavoidable, apply the brakes firmly and re-

Side Dishes for your Holiday Table Apple and Butternut Squash Bake

A sweet and savory bake, the perfect side dish. Ingredients 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cubed 3-4 red apples peeled and cubed 3 dates, pitted and chopped 3 tbsp olive oil 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 tbsp cinnamon 1/2 cup shelled walnuts Directions Prepare butternut squash, apples and dates. Mix together all ingredients except nuts in a large bowl. Spread out on a baking tray lined with aluminum foil. Bake at 450 degrees, mixing occasionally for 30-40 minutes or until butternut squash is tender enough to pierce with a fork. Mix in nuts and serve hot or cold.

Baked Pears

These baked pears are delicious as they are, but you could also add a handful of fresh or frozen raspberries or a sprinkling of nuts and raisins. Ingredients 3 ripe pears 3 tablespoons brown sugar 1⁄8 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ cup water Instructions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the pears lengthwise in half. Scoop out the core and seeds. Place cut side up in a small baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon. Spoon the mixture into the hollows of the pears. Pour the water into the baking dish. Bake for about 25 minutes, or until tender. Serve warm.

Homemade Applesauce

Applesauce is easy to make. By varying how long you cook the sauce, you can choose to make it chunky or smooth. Cooking unpeeled apples allows the applesauce to become a pretty shade of pink. For smooth applesauce, put the cooked sauce through a food mill or wire strainer. Enjoy homemade applesauce with potato pancakes. For a potato pancake recipe go to www.westsidenewsny.com Ingredients 7 medium apples ½ cup apple juice or water ¼ cup sugar or honey, optional ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional Instructions Core and cut the apples into bite-sized chunks. Put the apples into a medium saucepan. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil over mediumhigh heat. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, stirring often, until the apples are tender.

Homemade Hummus

Ingredients 1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed 1 garlic clove, minced 1 tablespoon tahini, optional 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ¼ cup water ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground cumin Instructions In a bowl, use a potato masher to mash the garbanzo beans until they are almost smooth. Stir in the remaining ingredients and mix until well combined.
