Greece Chamber President and CEO Sarah Lentini announces retirement On January 26, 2024, Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Sarah Lentini announced her retirement from the Chamber effective at the end of February. The Greece Regional Chamber serves businesses, nonprofits and individuals throughout Monroe County and the region. The organization provides networking, advocacy, business services and recognition, meeting space, health insurance, and advertising and marketing opportunities. During her tenure, Lentini spearheaded a strategic planning process and a rebranding campaign, resulting in an organizational name change, new membership benefits and materials, and new premium membership packages. She redesigned the organizational website and logo with a new motto/tagline, and in 2017 launched Business Voice, a one-hour radio show and podcast on WYSL, which she programmed and hosted. During COVID 19, Lentini worked closely with the Rochester Office of the Small Business Administration (SBA) and area lenders to assist businesses in accessing resources, and she continued to

serve members with remote meetings and essential services. “I have been honored to serve as President and CEO of the Chamber since my appointment in 2014,” said Sarah Lentini. “It has been a wonderful and fulfilling role, and I have been blessed to work with a great membership and staff team and a great board of directors with exemplary board leadership. I wish the Chamber the very best.” Eugene Welch, an Attorney at the Law Firm of Tully Rinckey, PLLC and Chairman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, said he is saddened at her retirement: “Sarah has done so much to help the Chamber and the Greece community. She kept the Chamber up and running as a vital community organization during COVID when many businesses had to close their doors. She is a joy to work with and gets things done. But she is entitled to retire and we all wish her well.” Since her announcement in late January, Lentini has worked with the board and the staff on a successful transition and the search for her replacement. Paddy Hill Elementary School Earns National Recognition Paddy Hill Elementary School was recently named a Lighthouse School by Franklin Covey Education. This recognition honors the fidelity with which Paddy Hill has implemented the Leader in Me program. Rooted in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the program empowers students to be the leaders of their own learning. The curriculum teaches students how to set and achieve goals, work collaboratively, and cultivate a vision for the future. Leader in Me is used by a number of Greece schools to teach leadership and life skills and foster trusting relationships. Paddy Hill, a K-5 school located at 1801 Latta Road, was one of the first in Greece to implement the Leader in Me curriculum. It is fitting that they continue to lead by example with this designation. They are the first school in the district and only the second school in Monroe County to achieve the Lighthouse School designation. The 500-plus students who attend Paddy Hill celebrated the accomplishment on Friday, January 26. Students and staff participated in different activities throughout the day centered around the lighthouse-inspired ‘glow’ theme. Paddy Hill’s fun day of glowing lights, games, and activities provided students with a tangible example of how hard work impacts success. Provided Information and Photos

Together Now/My Wayfinder Training Providing help to people experiencing food insecurity is the primary mission of the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, but food insecurity is a symptom of other, sometimes multiple, life challenges. Our volunteers naturally like to help others, so they were excited to learn of a new initiative to help connect people with the services they need. Together Now, a task force of the United Way, created a computer and smart phone application, called My Wayfinder, allowing a user to answer a series of questions and get a customized list of agencies to provide assistance. To make it as easy as possible, the user can send a request for services to the agency di-

rectly through the app. The agencies involved with the user can communicate with each other through the app to better coordinate services. GEFSCC was one of the very first agencies and the first food pantry in Monroe County to receive training in how to use the app. We are included in the app as a service provider and act as a “front door” agency – one that has initial contact with people needing services. MyWayFinder is available to anyone in the community who is looking for help. Interested in knowing more? Go to https://community.mywayfinder.org Provided Information and Photo

A Legacy Deferred: The Architecture of Thomas W. Boyde, Jr. Project by Barbara Burke

The Greece Historical Society (GHS) sponsored a Cultural Resource Survey of The Architecture of Thomas W. Boyde, Jr., Rochester’s first African American architect. The project was funded by grants from the Rochester Area Community Foundation, the Preservation League of New York State/New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), funding from GHS and individual donations. The project involved online and in person research, oral history interviews, creation of a database of Boyde’s projects, photography, and a focus on Thomas Boyde, Jr. in the context of mid-20th century African American architects. According to the Greece Historical Society website, “Thomas W. Boyde, Jr. was a prolific designer of MidCentury Modern homes and businesses, but also did significant work designing buildings for economically disadvantaged communities. The survey will help identify Boyde’s built work which spans across Western New York, including several houses in the town of Greece, and bring new appreciation to the work of this supremely talented architect who left a remarkable legacy in the greater Rochester area.” The Boyde Project team discovered so much more. The project team included, Christopher Brandt, architect at Bero Architecture PLLC; Jeffrey A. “Free” Harris, independent historian and historic preservation consultant from Hampton, Virginia; Katie Eggers Comeau, Senior Architect and architectural historian at Bero Architecture; Gina M. nected African Americans professionals. Boyde was aware of his peers, and his peers were aware of what he was doing,” said Jeffrey “Free” Harris, independent historian and historic preservation consultant on the project. The Project Team was very fortunate to have the cooperation of Boyde’s family in their research. Family members became a valuable source of many stories that pointed the researchers in the right direction. Some of Boyde’s archives were donated to the Rochester Museum and Science Center. These drawings were key to the study, and attribution, of Boyde’s work. Jeffrey A. “Free” Harris. Architect Christopher Brandt Provided photo conducted an extensive study of the archives. He said, “Our goal is to show Boyde’s career accomplishments. Much of his work was downplayed or omitted during his lifetime. His significant contributions were many times diminished. We found his influence, his reputation among clients, as well as the mutual respect contractors had for him, and the success of his private practice, all aspects defining Boyde’s architectural career. It was really exciting, and a fine moment, to be able to support and confirm what Boyde’s family have so long advocated for, that it was his design work on Monroe Community

Hospital. Boyde’s aesthetic signature in drafting was evident in the renderings.” “I had the opportunity to interview one of the employees that worked for Mr. Boyde in his private practice. She talked about how much his employees loved working with him. She described him as a patient man, a mentor and a professional. He was a detail oriented man, well dressed and meticulous in all aspects of his life and work. He was trained both as an architect and an engineer, working as both on many of his projects,” Katie Comeau said. Boyde worked as a sole-practitioner, from 1947 to 1981, the year of his death. When designing single family houses, Boyde worked directly with the homeowners, meeting with them personally, listening to their ideas, and incorporating these ideas into the design. He never built cookie cutter homes, each home was designed individually, with the homeowners requests realized, and always incorporating elements of his very distinctive design style. He possessed the ability to adapt to all design languages. For each project, Boyde presented the homeowner with an artistic rendering of the home, which he created himself, using pastels and color pencils drawn on the backside of vellum. The team found that during his career, Boyde designed over 700 projects, 300 of which are in the Rochester area. The archives they worked from are not complete, there is still a significant amount of undiscovered files of Boyde’s work yet to explore. Greece resident, Gina DiBella, worked on the project team as a preservation consultant. A member of the Greece Historical Society who sponsored the project, she wrote the applications for the grants that funded the project. She said, “Mr. Boyde’s homes are everywhere. continued on page 15

A friend from college grew up in a Boyde home. My grandparents in Irondequoit lived three doors down from a Boyde home. I drive by one of his homes in my neighborhood all the time. We have researched over 700 Boyde designs, and feel there are at least an additional one third more properties yet to be discovered.” “The Greece Historical Society was honored to sponsor the cultural resource survey of the life and architecture of Thomas W. Boyde, Jr.,” said Greece Historical Society president, William Sauers. “Mr. Boyde had an important influence in the local community, not just Greece, but the greater Rochester/Western New York area.” “We all feel that we would like to know more about Boyde and his amazing body of work. To discover, and attribute the additional homes that are out there, yet to be discovered, is the goal. It is important to let people know just how influential he was to the architecture of the area, and just how extraordinary he was. Boyde was an architect, an engineer and an artist. A multi-talented man, with a rare level of skills that enabled him to create such an amazing legacy. We want to let people know how good he actually was,” Katie Comeau said. Ceremonies included a puck drop by local Fire and Life Safety Award winner Andrew Trammell who, in June of 2023, was honored for his actions notifying his family during a fire in their home, hockey team members displaying a large American Flag during the National Anthem and a large American flag display off of a Ladder Truck in the parking lot. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Although we’ve had a fairly mild winter this year, I do want to remind residents that our Winter Parking Ordinance is in effect through April 15, Midnight – 8:00am. Until this time, please do not park on any Town roads or the grass on right-of-ways. This is to make plowing and salting of dedicated Town streets safer and more effective and to cut the cost of snow removal. We are beginning to ramp up for all of Spring and Summer events here in the Town of Greece. Keep an eye out for details on the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship, Summer Food Truck Rodeos and Concerts, and our beloved 4th of July event! You have likely heard that we have officially opened the expansion to the Greece Community Center, “The Center.” The new expansion

sistently displays outstanding leadership skills. Scholarship applications can be found on the Town of Greece website: https://greeceny.gov/residents/jerry-j-helfer-youth/ The scholarship deadline is Friday, May 24, 2024. For more information, please contact the Greece Youth Board at 723-2934 or email jerryhelferscholarship@greeceny.gov. Provided Information

features 30,000 square feet of new space. Combined with our previously renovated space we are now able to offer 60,000 square feet of space dedicated to the health and wellness of our community. We have added a wellness center which features cardio and circuit training equipment, a dedicated cycling studio, a barre room, and several new programs spaces, both large and small. Additionally, our new expanded walk track is 1/5 of a mile long and we are happy to share that, at the request of our regular walkers, there is a ton of sunlight. Walkers and runners can enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors and walk comfortably despite the actual weather outside. To learn more about what The Center has to offer and to register for a membership, please call 723-2425 or email GreeceParksandRec@ Greeceny.gov. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related matters. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website.
