Countdown with the Town of Greece Begins for the April 2024 Solar Eclipse! Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich asks that you join all of us in the Town of Greece as we count down the days to the April 2024 Solar Eclipse! We are excited to bring together our community as we marvel at this astronomical event of the decade. More information, including viewing locations and safety guidelines, will be available soon. This rare celestial occurrence will take place on April 8, 2024. On this day, the moon will pass between the sun and earth, casting a shadow that will momentarily darken the daytime sky. In
Rochester, the eclipse is expected to begin with the partial phase around 2:00pm and end around 5:00pm. If you have driven past the Greece Town Campus lately, you may have noticed the “countdown” on our digital sign. “As we anticipate the celestial spectacle of the April 2024 solar eclipse, we encourage Greece residents to join together in witnessing this rare and extraordinary opportunity,” said Supervisor Reilich. From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich As I look back on this past year, I am grateful to all the residents of this town who help to make Greece a wonderful place to live. I hope everyone had a very safe and happy holiday season! This past month, hundreds of residents braved the cold weather to join us for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Family Christmas Party. We were treated to a fantastic musical performance followed by a visit from Santa Claus! An explosion of colors lit the night sky as we held the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Thank you to all who joined us for this festive holiday event! During last month’s meeting of the Greece Town Board, I had the privilege of presenting a proclamation to the Greece Blue Knights Marching Band. They received the title of State Champions after a competition that was recently held at the Syracuse Dome. A major congratulations to the 2023 NYSFBC Large School 3 Division Champions. This year marks the first
bers of the Greece Marching Band,” said Supervisor Reilich. “The members of the Greece Marching Band are a dedicated group of individuals who practice countless hours. They participate in many community events – including the Town of Greece Memorial Day Parade. We congratulate them on their outstanding accomplishment!” Provided Information
time GMB won the state title. Congratulations to our newest Town Board Member, Councilman David DiPonzio. David took his oath of office on January 1st with his wife Ariana, their three daughters and their son by his side. In addition to his immediate family David packed the house with extended friends and family all wanting to share in this moment. David works in Information Services performing Industrial control systems cybersecurity and has lived in the first ward of Greece for 32 years. He was a long time member of the Holy Cross Church Parish Council, past 3rd and 4th grade basketball coach and is currently a volunteer Firefighter with the Lake Shore Fire Department. Join me in officially welcoming David to our Town Board. Former First Ward Councilman, Mike Barry was termed out and could not run for another 2year term. We thank him for his dedicated service not only to the First Ward, but to the Greece community as a whole. We are certain Councilman DiPonzio will follow in former Councilman Barry’s path showing his dedication and involvement as he works on behalf of those he serves. From my family to yours, I wish you a safe and happy New Year!

Homesteads for Hope is a feeling - Peter’s Story As Homesteads for Hope wraps up another season, the people of this local organization have so much to be grateful for. In the last year, their “Community Farm Experience” has been able to accomplish so much to help families and individuals with disabilities – from opening their doors to new program participants, members, volunteers and school districts, to completing the “Forever Homestead” project. The newest community center offers a door always open, expanding the non-profit’s impact 12 months a year – nearly seven days a week. All of this was only possible because of the endless support that the Greater Rochester area has shown, yet there is much more work to be done to help families and individuals of all abilities. Take Peter, for example, who joined the farm’s programs over the summer and simply never left. As someone who utilizes a wheelchair with limited control of muscle movement, Homesteads for Hope’s staff were honored at how quickly he and his family jumped on board and trusted them to provide the right accommodations for him to participate on the working farm. With his creative mind and keen eye, Peter found a passion for flower gardening and arrangements right away, and even hosted his own U-Pick Workshop towards the end of the season. When asking Peter how he feels, he stated, “I like coming to the farm because the things I do here make me feel accomplished. I
Peter joined Homesteads for Hope this summer and developed a passion for flower gardening.

like that everyone can come together and we can be ourselves, and I know I have a purpose here.” Not only is he feeling valued, he also has the farm to call home, and the same goes for his family. Because of the work of the Homesteads for Hope team, Peter’s family is now surrounded by a caring community. He continues to grow his purpose and feels included in goals for the future. There are countless more stories like Peter’s, of individuals who are seeking a place to belong. Homesteads for Hope is currently serving over 600 families who are involved in programs, memberships, and volunteer experiences with thousands of community visitors each year seeking to get involved. Since opening the Forever Homestead Community Center, the opportunities keep knocking and the farm needs support to keep opening the door. Homesteads for Hope has plans to expand their membership experience, mission-based programs, farm agritourism and new partnerships with other non-profits, agencies, and school districts. They want everyone to experience what Peter feels when he’s at the farm. This requires operational support to expand program offerings, hire additional staff and continue to ensure the 2024 experience is better than ever before. Visit www.HomesteadsforHope.org to learn more about how to get involved. Provided information and photos

Local Artist featured in New York State Canal Corporation Video by Barbara Burke
Artist and teacher, Jeannine Pelusio, grew up in Greece. She attended Athena High School, studied at Alfred University and SUNY Brockport, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts. While at Brockport, Jeannine worked as an assistant to artist Judy Soprano, a prolific local painter and teacher of art. Soprano is quoted as saying, “I opened the door to my creativity, and found my soul.” Opening doors to creativity is exactly what Jeannine Pelusio accomplishes with her Intuitive Painting Workshops, offered through the On the Canals program. “In 2018, I attended a workshop on intuitive painting and I fell in love with the process. I found it so liberating. To paint without a reference image, applying paint to a canvas based on how you are feeling in the moment, looking at the textures and colors that appear, and following that lead to create an image. It’s so exciting to me. I wanted to share what I found with my students,” Jeannine said. She held a few intuitive painting workshops in her home studio, Stony Point Art Studio, located in Ogden. After a friend introduced her to the On the Canals program, she approached them about offering intuitive painting workshops as one of their activities. Now in its fourth year, the On the Canals program offers free recreational activities sponsored by the NYS Canal Corporation and NY Power Authority. On the Canals excursions include kayak-

ing, cycling, cruising, hiking, outdoor painting, snowshoeing and accessible activities such as adaptive kayaking. Initially piloted in summer 2020 as ‘NY Canal Staycations,’ the ‘On the Canals’ program expanded to year round participation and has grown nearly five times with more than 13,000 participants in 2022. During the summer of 2023, through On the Canals, Jeannine offered several intuitive painting workshops, outdoors, along the Canal, in Spencerport, Fairport and Pittsford. The workshops were extremely successful, filling as quickly as they were listed. In the Fall, by happenstance, Jeannine found the Cornhill Navigation Welcome Center, a beautiful space along the Genesee River in the City of Rochester. “I am so happy to have this wonderful, inspirational, indoor space where I am able to offer workshops during the cold weather months,” she said. In September Jeannine started offering workshops at Cornhill Navigation Center, and the popularity of intuitive painting grew. Classes for drawing and painting for youth, ages 9-18, were also added. In late Fall, Jeannine was contacted by the NYS Canal CorJeannine Pelusio

poration, about being featured in one of their videos for the On the Canals program. Jeannine said, “Making the video was fun. It is such a unique opportunity that On the Canals offers, open to all, and free of charge. The intuitive painting workshops have so many rewards, to the participants, and to me, as instructor. You can come in, with absolutely no painting and drawing background, leave two hours later with an experience, an accomplishment, and a beautiful painting. I think part of the success the participants are finding is really driving home the understanding that, it is not about painting a picture that you can hang on the wall, it is about taking something that you are feeling, putting it down in paint, and discovering something about yourself. The group in each workshop forms a little bit of a community. They are all going through the same process, together on an adventure.” The Cornhill Navigation Welcome Center, 280 Exchange Blvd.,

Greece News JanuaryFebruary 2024 11 Rochester, 14608, is hosting two First Friday Art events at their facility. The first was held on January 5th, featuring Jeannine’s artwork. Many of Jeannine’s works focus on nature and local historic waterways. On February 2nd, Jeannine’s artworks will be joined by works from some of those who participated in the intuitive workshops. These, first ever, First Friday events at Cornhill Center are open from 6-9PM. Beer and wine will be available to enjoy while viewing the art. For the past 18 years, Jeannine has been teaching students of all ages at her home studio, Stony Point Art Studio. She offers classes in drawing and painting, in all mediums, and home school art classes. Coming this Spring, Jeannine will be offering classes at Homesteads for Hope, Manitou Road, Ogden, in their recently opened Forever Homestead Community Center, and outdoors along their beautiful canal location. According to Homestead’s for Hope’s website, “We are a Community Farm that empowers people of all abilities to learn, work, live, and grow in nature’s classroom. Located on the wide waters of the Erie Canal, we offer a place to belong. We grow more than tomatoes - we grow people’s unique purpose.” To view Jeannine’s NYS Canal video go to www.facebook.com/nycanals/videos/2197540490581327 For more information on Jeannine and Stony Point Studio www.stonypointartstudio.com For more information on On the Canals www.onthecanals.com For more information on Cornhill Navigation Center www.cornhillnav.org For more information on Homesteads for Hope www.homesteadsforhope.org

Seed catalog time!
by Kristina Gabalski
by Kristina Gabalski
That special time of year for gardeners has arrived: seed catalog time! These glossy, colorful and enticing publications fill the mailbox just after Christmas. Now is the time to sit back and take in all the information, beautiful photos and inspiration seed catalogs provide. If you have never grown flowers or vegetables from seed before, consider trying a few varieties in 2024. Many flowers and vegetables can be direct-sown in the spring right into the garden, while others benefit from the extra care and protection of starting inside – the seed catalog and packet will provide guidance on this. West Virginia University Extension offers tips for making the most out of your seed catalogs. They suggest the best way to start is by reviewing your records from the previous growing year. Look at what varieties performed best in your garden and which varieties did not do as well as hoped. Consider trying new varieties this year. Starting plants from seed is an economical way to obtain fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables as well as herbs and flowers, but good seeds are not cheap, so make sure to do your homework before ordering. Know your hardiness zone – the USDA just released an updated Plant Hardiness Zone Map late in 2023. Hardiness zones are based on the average annual minimum temperature in your area and help you determine which plants will thrive in your location. Grow plants that are hardy for your area. WVU Extension advises to underestimate your need for seeds and overestimate your need for space. The beautiful color photos in seed catalogs as well as the exciting new varieties introduced each year can be very tempting and it is easy to overbuy seeds. Remember you only have so much space. Measure the amount of space you have for sowing and create a map using the mature size of plants you intend to grow. Overcrowding in the garden can lead to pest problems and disease – give yourself plenty of room for plants. Keep a seed journal to track what seeds you have purchased from year to year and the amount of produce you have grown. Check your seed catalog for charts that explain common terms and abbreviations included in seed descriptions. Here are a few common terms of which to be aware: •Days to maturity – the number of days to harvest expected after
Chamber Seeks Youth Nominations

This program provides businesses, volunteer groups, schools and individuals with the opportunity to recognize young people in the community who have demonstrated exceptional personal growth and development through their outstanding achievements and contributions. Being nominated to receive this award carries great meaning to the nominees and their families. The community should nominate youth who may have exhibited one or more of these desirable qualities: An exceptional volunteer; an outstanding employee; one who has given service to the community or other peers; one who has coped with a life challenge - physical, social, or mental; one who has overcome a

planting transplants. •Open pollinated (OP) – a plant pollinated by another plant, rather than pollinating itself. These varieties come true to seed and are what you want if you will be saving seed. •Hybrid – seeds produced from a cross of two or more varieties. Seeds saved from hybrids result in plants that are not identical to the parent plants. F1 refers to first generation hybrids; F2 refers to second generation hybrids. •Disease resistant – often expressed with abbreviations such as “V” for Verticillium Wilt – this indicates the degree of disease resistance exhibited by the plant. Each catalog should explain their abbreviations for disease resistance. •Treated – treated seeds are coated with fungicide or insecticide to protect them from disease and pests during germination and seedling growth. Color may be added to these seeds to differentiate them from untreated seed. A well-planned garden is more likely to be successful – seed catalogs are a great resource for choosing varieties that will meet your needs and thrive in your garden conditions. personal tragedy (Parent/Guardian permission required). The Youth Hall of Fame recipients are selected by a Chamber committee of community and business representatives and will be honored at a special ceremony later this year. All nominees must be enrolled as a high school student in 11th or 12th grade in any regional public, private, parochial or charter school. For nomination forms and additional information, visit our website at www.GreeceChamber.org. Nominations should be forwarded to: Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce, 2402 West Ridge Road, Rochester, NY 14626, faxed to 585.227.7275, or emailed to Info@ GreeceChamber.org on or before February 16, 2024. New Year’s resolutions to quit tobacco As we enter a new year, many of us seek ways to improve health or make changes in our lives for the better through New Year’s resolutions. Quitting tobacco is one of the five most common resolutions among people who set one for the new year. Some studies show that making a resolution to quit tobacco results in a person being three times more successful than those who do not set a resolution. Additional boosts toward success can come from discussing quitting tobacco with your doctor or health care team, and many doctors and nurses are well equipped to share information and resources that can lead to quitting for good. If you smoke, now is the time to consider making this a change in your life. Quitting tobacco significantly decreases the possibility of many negative health outcomes. There are many resources and programs available to increase your success with quitting tobacco. If you are considering quitting smoking or vaping, talk with your doctor and contact the New York State Smokers’ Quitline at 1-866-NY-QUITS (866-697-8487) or http://www.nysmokefree. com, to quit vaping, text DITCHVAPE to 88709.

On January 10, 2024, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Town Councilmembers, the Greece Center Staff and all those involved with the project, at the Grand Opening of the new Center expansion. “I would like to thank our construction team, my management team, that assisted throughout the project and our incredible Recreation staff. Today was the culmination of nearly two years of planning and construction and we are thrilled to be able to open the doors for our community. We unveiled another amenity for the families in Greece that was constructed without any borrowing. By utilizing grants and careful fiscal management, we were able to turn over this space to the community, debt free, while once again reducing the town tax rate,” Supervisor Reilich said at the opening. The new expansion features 30,000 square feet of new space, combined with previously renovated space, there is now 60,000 square feet dedicated to the health and wellness of the community. A wellness center was added, featuring cardio and circuit training equipment, a dedicated cycling studio, a barre room, and several new programs spaces, both large and small. The newly expanded walk track is 1/5 of a mile long, and features an abundance of natural sunlight. Walkers and runners will enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors, walking comfortably, despite the actual weather outside. GREASE follows the journey of Danny Zuko, played by junior Anthony Raymond and Sandy Dumbroski, played by junior Sophia Butera, as they try to relive their summer romance in “Summer Nights.” Seniors Taylor Spriggs and Ethan Rodriguez who play Rizzo and Kenickie, along with their fellow T-Birds and Pink Ladies, sing and dance to such hit songs as “Greased Lightning”, “Beauty School Dropout”, “Sandy”, “Hopelessly Devoted”, and “You’re the One That I Want” as they navigate high school to the unforgettable rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack that defined a generation. The award winning Greece Athena High School Theatre, who won RBTL’s first Overall Production of the Year for 42nd Street and was voted Rochester Rocs Best Drama Club, is known for its extravagant and entertaining musical productions and this show is no different. Audiences will be swept away by the costumes, sets, singable melodies and electrifying dance numbers. When you come, make sure to check out the authentic 1948 Ford Mercury that will be featured in “Greased Lightning.” Locating this beauty could not have been done without the dedication and
support of many parents, both alumni and present. Tickets are available on line at showtix4U.com and at the door. All evening shows are at 7:00pm and the Sunday matinees are at 2:00pm. The original movie starred John Travolta and Olivia NewtonJohn, both have been affected by breast cancer. The cast plans on making a donation to help support breast cancer survivors in the area.
