Spotted Lanternfly found in Monroe County Small, isolated populations of spotted lanternflies have been found in Greece, New York. This is the first confirmed occurrence of a breeding population of this invasive insect in Monroe County. The finds are near Rt. 104 and 390. New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets is actively assessing the situation this week. From monitoring other outbreaks, it appears that we have some time before this will become a wide-spread issue. Generally, it takes 3-4 years, and possibly longer, before populations will become noticeable. The biggest cause for concern is our upstate vineyards because although the spotted lanternfly can feed on over 100 different plants the only crop plant it is known to impact is grape vines. Due to large role the wine industry plays in our upstate economy, a great deal of attention will go to protecting the vineyards. How can we all help? Being alert and on the lookout for egg cases now and insects in the spring is our best defense. Reporting any sightings is vital, so it can be tracked and controlled. First, take a photo, then if you capture the insect, kill it. Finally send your photo and location information to Spotted Lanternfly Public Report (arcgis.com)
SLF is not a danger to humans or other animals. They do not bite and they do not carry disease. They can certainly be a nuisance, but we don’t want to overreact and try to control them with chemicals or other methods that will not affect the insects, but could harm the environment. For more information, please visit theCornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County website, https://monroe.cce.cornell.edu or the NYS IPM website, New York State Integrated Pest Management | CALS (cornell.edu) Provided Information and Photo

Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf Hit Hard by Inflation Food price inflation has a double impact on organizations, like the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf that serves the food insecure population. They receive increased requests to help people, and it costs them more to provide the food for them. According to Amy Peritsky, Chairperson, “The Food Shelf is currently serving 50% more clients than last year and 67% more than pre-pandemic levels.” “We used to consider it a busy day when ten people called asking for help. In mid-October we received 18 calls on Monday and 27 calls on Tuesday,” said Molly Ives, a volunteer with the Food Shelf for 24 years. In late October calls were up to 24 on Monday and 37 on Tuesday, the need keeps increasing. Initial projections for the next fiscal year indicated a $48,700 deficit for the Food Shelf to maintain all existing services for the current number of clients served monthly. As a result, the Food Shelf decided to cut all the remaining extras that were added to programs during the pandemic. Cuts also include some items that were traditionally provided, the purchase of all household and personal hygiene items has been eliminated, with the exception of toilet paper. Even after these cuts, a $31,800 deficit is projected for July 2023 through June 2024. “This might sound frightening; however, we have faced financial challenges before and our community has always come though. We need that to happen again,” noted Vice Chairperson, Polly McCubbin. The Food Shelf has been able to leverage its membership in Foodlink to purchase food at significantly lower cost than through retail grocers. This is in addition to grants and free food items distributed through Federal Nutrition Programs. Amy Peritsky explained, “We can amplify the amount of food when we place or-
ders through Foodlink. In August we purchased 13,900 pounds of food, and some miscellaneous items, at a cost of 60 cents per pound.” Food drives have always played an important part in the community’s support. Last year 30% of all food distributed to clients came from direct community donations. Individuals, as well as school and church groups, sports teams and service organizations can help by collecting non-perishable foods and bringing them to the Food Shelf at 500 Maiden Lane. “Anyone can do a food drive, neighborhood food drives are great,” McCubbin said. Currently, the most needed food items are chunky soups, canned fruit, cereals, canned chili, canned stew or any canned meat, and peanut butter. Donations are accepted at the Shelf, 500 Maiden Lane, Mondays 9 to 11 a.m.; Tuesdays 11a.m. to Noon; Wednesdays 5 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 to 11 a.m. Other donation sites are Abbott’s Frozen Custard, 3208 Latta Road, daily 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and The Shops on West Ridge, 3200 West Ridge, Thursday thru Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donation checks may be mailed to GEFS, 500 Maiden Lane, Rochester, N.Y., 14616. The Food Shelf has been around for more than 45 years, and are confident, with the community’s help, they will be around for much longer. Thank you for helping your neighbors! Provided Information

New Owner for Crescent Beach Restaurant After nearly a decade of delays and false starts, the Crescent Beach Restaurant is finally on track to make a comeback. “This time it’s for real,” said Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich. “We’ve been in talks with a competent and successful restaurant operator who has now secured the property, and she means business.” Local restauranteur Katherine Mott-Formicola, a Greece native, known for outstanding venues such as Monroe’s Restaurant in Pittsford, The Wintergarden by Monroe’s in Downtown Rochester, The Divinity Estate and Chapel across from Highland Park, and her newest venture Rare 3001, a high-end steak house located in the lower level of Monroe’s on Monroe Avenue set to open in December 2023, recently closed on the Crescent Beach property. She plans to complete the long-stalled renovations and anticipates re-opening the iconic Greece establishment in May of next year. Mott-Formicola intends to infuse the beloved iconic Greece landmark with the high standards, delicious menu and amazing service for which she is known. “I am delighted to be back in Greece and so excited at the prospect of returning Crescent Beach to a destination restaurant and venue,” said Kathy. “I’m especially excited to celebrate the holidays at Crescent Beach and bring back customer favorites, such as Sunday Brunch and all you can eat seafood and prime rib.”

Kathy and her team are ready for this project. “Our sleeves are rolled up and we’ve hit the ground running to be ready for our Spring Grand Opening,” she said enthusiastically. “I feel truly honored to head up this nostalgic project and write the next chapter in the Crescent Beach story. See you at Crescent Beach in 2024.” Supervisor Reilich said, “We’re excited to welcome Kathy to Greece’s business community and grateful to have her as a partner in bringing back Crescent Beach. She brings an energy and level of quality that’s exactly what we need to make this successful.” Mott-Formicola also recently took over food, beverage and events at Ridgemont Country Club in Greece. For almost a decade, Crescent Beach has been owned by an individual in Ontario, Canada. Through a combination of absenteeism, unpaid contractors, and soured investors, renovations stalled for several years and the property has been largely dormant since 2017. Liens had accumulated and property maintenance was a sore spot for the town’s Code Enforcement division and Edgemere Drive neighbors alike. As the Canadian owner became less and less responsive to enforcement, with the support of Supervisor Reilich’s newly formed Economic Development team, a different approach and strategy was undertaken, and those intensified efforts helped the owner to clean up the title and market the property. Serious discussions with Mott-Formicola began in the spring of this year and a project team assembled months in advance culminating with the very best outcome for the business and in particular, our community. He went back to college, to save lives imprinted on Doug, deepening while working as a substitute teacher, and his own faith, and fueling his desire to serve got his degree in Occupational Therapy. In something greater than himself. Lt. Col. Douglas Herrmann his late 20s Doug was happily working as “When Gary shared things with you it was an Occupational Therapist in the healthcare rehabilitation field at St. Mary’s Hospital. This is where he met his parts of his soul, he gave you a piece of it and you were blessed and among the fortunate. His testimony hit me square in the heart and I needed to try again to enlist,” Doug said. This time Doug was cleared of the previous medical issues, and began basic training in 2000. Doug was selected for Medical Services Corps. “My niche was pre-hospital medical support for combat,” Doug said. He was in the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum. After a commission and several promotions, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. Lt. Colonel Herrmann spent 23 years, and five deployments, embedded in the field medical companies in the infantry division in Iraq, Saudi Arabia as Medical Advisor, and in Afghanistan for humanitarian relief. Herrmann’s team consisted of a surgical team, medical team, and an operation center for coordinating with other medical evacuation assists for wounded personnel. “Gary was a mentor to me. My military service could not be separated from what Gary taught me about selflessly serving others.” Beikirch was even a guest speaker addressing Herrmann’s troops in 2005. Beikirch passed in December 2021 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. “Lolly called me and asked me to give the eulogy at her husband’s funeral and I will never forget it. I told her I was not qualified, and she laughed and said, ‘Gary knew you would say that.’” Herrmann recalls giving Gary’s eulogy in his dress uniform as being the most profound moment of his military career. “I will never forget it.” After Gary’s death, Doug was even more driven to share what Gary’s life represented. “I will do all I can to continue sharing the blessing of who that man was. He wore a Medal of Honor with humility that was so profound, and we can all learn from it. He was selfless. His message is part of my DNA now,” Doug said. Lt. New Business in Greece The Town of Greece, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the Grand Opening of Upstate Roots Design, a new business located at 978 North Greece Road. Supervisor Reilich was joined by Receiver of Taxes Andrew Conlon and Upstate Roots Design owners Megan Baker and Kristin Lindley. Megan and Kristin are both Aquinas alumni and Niagara University graduates. In October of 2022, they purchased the building at 978 North Greece Road, which was previously known as the Covert-Brodie-Pollock House. This 1832 designated historic landmark is one of the last of three cobblestone buildings in the Town of Greece. Both Megan and Kristin were drawn to this location due to its historical and unique charm. They are excited to welcome the community to share in its historical beauty as they continue to restore the integrity of the building. Their business is a boutique that specializes in staging and interior decorating. Provided Information and Photo
From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich It’s difficult to believe that winter is just around the corner! I would like to remind residents of our Winter Parking Ordinance, which is enforced November 1 thru April 15 from midnight to 8:00am. This allows for safer and more effective plowing and salting of dedicated town streets and helps keep the cost of snow removal down, saving tax dollars for our residents. I am excited to announce that the Town of Greece website has been updated! The new website is streamlined to provide residents with nearly immediate access to the most used Town of Greece services and resources, including our events and activities at the newly renovated Center, Department of Public Works brush pick up and snow removal service, the latest Town news, economic development plans, and how to

contact the Town. I encourage you to check out our new and improved website. This now modern website is easy to navigate, interactive, and user-friendly. In other positive news, regarding finances, the total debt for the Town of Greece is lower today than at the end of 2013. In fact the current debt is lower than it has been in 30 plus years. We have paid off much of the debt that was present when my team and I took office, we refinanced all of the higher interest bonds and have been paying cash for our projects. We expect that our debt will decrease by more than $2.4 million in 2024. We held our Fall Shredding Event this past month and, as usual, helped hundreds of residents confidentially dispose of their documents. As always, we will hold another Shredding Event in the Spring season. Stay tuned for details. I would like to invite you to follow my Facebook page: Bill Reilich Greece Town Supervisor. Factual information and townrelated updates are posted to this page regularly. Stay safe and healthy, Greece!
