The New York State Canal Corporation has kicked-off the 2023 Fall Fishing Program – an award-winning, annual program that enhances fishing opportunities while boosting tourism and bolstering the local economy. For a fourth consecutive year, regulated flows of water from the Erie Canal into Lake Ontario tributaries in Western New York will be released to improve spawning conditions, extend angling opportunities, and enhance the world-class fishing destinations in Monroe, Orleans, and Niagara counties. “Since its inception, the Fall Fishing Program has not only improved the experience of anglers across the state, but it has also successfully extended Western New York’s fishing season, allowing New Yorkers to enjoy the sport through mid-December,” said New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll. Now through December 15, the New York State Canal Corporation will supply four tributaries with elevated flows to improve conditions for fish, thereby enticing more salmon, steelhead and brown trout to enter and remain in these streams. Sandy Creek and Oak Orchard Creek, the premier streams of Orleans and Monroe Counties, will receive the additional water first, followed by the Eighteenmile Creek of Niagara County and Johnson Creek of Niagara and Orleans County. New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “The New York State Canal Corporation is proud to support another season of fall fishing in Western New York. This extension of the fishing season benefits everyone from dedicated anglers to hardworking small business owners, especially Western New York’s canalside businesses and the surrounding communities.” As part of a continued enhancement of the Fall Fishing program, the Canal Corporation updated its website to provide anglers with information about when and where the increased water releases will take place. The Fall Fishing webpage includes a schedule of water releases, links to public fishing locations, “live” water level data from the U.S. Geological Survey plus additional resources and background for casual and serious anglers alike. Weather and any emerging Canal maintenance conditions can influence water releases, so visit the webpage often for any updated conditions. For more information and to view the updated Fall Fishing webpage, visit https://www.canals.ny.gov/Fall_fishing/index. html. Provided information
Autumn peony care
Greece News OctoberNovember 2023 13
by Kristina Gabalski
With autumn here, lush, spring peonies blooms might be the furthest thing from your mind, but now is the time to take special care of your peonies to make sure they bloom their best next spring. Peonies are versatile plants. Their blooms signal that summer is here, and they look great both in the garden and in the vase. The flowers fade by the end of June, but their foliage complements other flowers during the growing season and helps to hide dying spring bulb foliage. Peonies are very long-lived and can happily bloom for more than 50 years if left undisturbed. If you have peonies in your garden, plan to weed around them and cut foliage back to ground level after the first hard freeze this fall. According to Iowa State University, removing the foliage can help control leaf blotch and other fungal diseases next year. If you find that you need to move your peonies, vigorous plants can be dug now and divided for propagation purposes. Start by cutting off peony stems to ground level. Carefully dig around and under each plant, working to retain as much of the root system as possible. Iowa State University says to divide large peony clumps, gently shake the clump to remove loose soil from the root system. Use a sharp knife to divide the clump into sections, making sure each division has at least three to five buds (eyes) and a good root system. If your division has fewer than three eyes, it will take several years to produce a good flower display. Plant your divisions in a sunny spot with good drainage. Peonies need at least six hours of sun for the best bloom. Dig a hole that is large enough to accommodate the root system and position the peony so that the buds are one to two inches below the soil surface. If the buds are too deep, the plants may fail to bloom. Fill the hole with soil and firm around the plant as you backfill. Water thoroughly. Peonies should be spaced three to four feet apart. If you are planting potted peonies from the garden center, plant them at soil level. The buds will be at the correct soil depth in the pot. In mid-November, mulch your newly planted peonies with a four- to six-inch layer of clean, weed-free straw or other organic material. This will prevent repeated freezing and thawing of the soil over the winter which could heave plants out of the ground. Remember to remove the mulch in the spring before growth begins, Iowa State University says. In the spring, you can fertilize plants when the new shoots begin to emerge. Iowa State University recommends one-fourth cup of 10-10-10 fertilizer. Lightly cultivate it into the soil around the plants and avoid getting it within six inches of the crown as young shoots are very susceptible to fertilizer burn. Water the

area well after fertilizer application to dissolve it and move nutrients into the soil. Peonies can benefit from support, as the flower heads are heavy. Place metal hoops or rings over the plants in early spring. Single-flowered and Japanese varieties have lighter blooms and are less likely to flop. Newly planted peonies may not bloom the first spring. Iowa State recommends removing any flower buds the first spring to promote root and foliar growth. Flower numbers should increase rapidly by the third and fourth years.

KidsCare Program at Greece Central School District Curiosity • Creativity • Connections by Barbara Burke
Kelly Giudice is Greece Central School’s Coordinator of the KidsCare Program. Giudice joined Greece Central Schools in July 2021, hired to relaunch their child care division. Giudice has 25 years of experience in child care. Greece’s child care program closed down during COVID. According to the GCSD website, “The district’s new and distinctive, before and after-school, KidsCare Kelly Giudice Program, offers care for students in K-5. The reinvented KidsCare Program is committed to developing settings that support the social, emotional, creative, and collaborative intelligence of the child. Through a child-driven and interest-based approach to recreational programming, it is our mission to highlight and develop each child’s innate strengths and talents. This program serves as the ideal complement to your child’s daily academic experiences as we strive, as a district, to support the whole child, and the needs of our families, with the development of an inclusive, joyful, and close-knit community.” Giudice said the program was developed at GCSD with the goal of, “Wrapping the kids in a nurturing, play-based environment. This is the children’s time, we believe the work we are doing supports their academic development by focus on social and emotional skill development. Our programs helps kids to regulate emotions, and encourages creative expression through the arts. Not everyone is doing the same project. The focus is on the medium, the process and individual expression. We honor the fact that children are movers, there are many opportunities to get their bodies moving. We also help deepen their connection to the natural world through outdoor activities, spending a lot of time outside in nature. It is important that children get a couple of extra hours outside. It might be old-school, but we
also realize the amount of screen time that kids today are experiencing. Time is needed outside, playing. Playtime outdoors is important because it provides kids with the opportunity to solve problems, have adventures and develop the social skills that free play offers.” Also, the KidsCare Program seeks to develop community connections through service projects. Currently the kids are making potholders to sell at a small craft sale at school. The proceeds will be donated to local homeless shelters. This encourages the realization that they can truly make a change in their community through involvement. In development of the program, GCSD took into account issues children are experiencing coping with the isolation brought on by COVID. Giudice said, “During COVID all kids were denied continued on page 15

the opportunity for social play, and to communicate with one another, and with their community. They felt a real isolation. We support the building of relationships and connections through play. We foster curiosity, and are committed to being in touch with the kid’s interests. We listen to the subject of their play and follow through with programs designed to meet these interests and curiosities.” Seven, of the eleven, elementary schools in GCSD are participating in the KidsCare Program. They provide care during the hours before school, 7:00am until school begins, and after school, until 6:00pm. There is a fee for the program. GCSD works to keep the rates below the market rates. “The goal here is not to make a profit, but to provide an affordable program so that all families can participate. GCSD is partnered with the Department of Social Services, serving families that receive child care services. Currently there are 300 children, grades K to 5, enrolled in KidsCare in Greece. With a staff of 30 to 35 adults, each location has a site manager and KidsCare aides. They are currently looking for community members to work in the program. “It is the perfect job opportunity for college students, retired individuals and school personnel. We employ a diverse group on our staff, providing a way to be involved with children and with your Greece Central School community,” Giudice said.
