From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich
As I look back on this past year, I am grateful to all the residents of this town who help to make Greece a wonderful place to live. I hope everyone had a very safe and happy holiday season!
This past month, hundreds of residents braved the cold weather to join us for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Family Christmas Party. We were treated to a fantastic musical performance followed by a visit from Santa Claus! An explosion of colors lit the night sky as we held the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Thank you to all who joined us for this festive holiday event!
Last month, the Greece Town Board and I, along with Greece Town Deputy Supervisor Michelle Marini and Greece Town Historian Keith Suhr, ended our town’s 200th year celebration with the placement and sealing of a time capsule. Greece residents were encouraged to submit suggestions of items to be included in the time capsule that will be enjoyed by future residents, which includes artifacts recommended by our residents in response to the survey given last fall. I am excited for future residents of the Town of Greece to open this time capsule 50 years from now and reflect on the artifacts that represent the events, activities, and happenings in the great Town of Greece in the year 2022 as we celebrated our 200th birthday. The sealing and placement of the time capsule was our final commemorative event as we closed out 2022 and the Town of Greece Bicentennial Celebration.
During last month’s meeting of the Greece Town Board, I had the privilege of presenting a proclamation and medal to Justin

Identifying conifers
by Kristina Gabalski
Conifers and other evergreens take center stage both during the holidays and all winter long in the landscape. Conifer refers to needle-bearing trees that have cones for their fruits. Conifers are also commonly called pines, but not all needle-bearing trees are in the family Pinaceae. Additionally, the cedar family is a needle-bearing evergreen, but its fruit looks more like a berry than a cone. Eastern redcedar and pasture juniper – two species in the cedar family – also have berry-like cones with fleshy scales that have grown together.
In an article on conifer identification, Peter Smallidge, NYS Extension Forester and Director of the Arnot Teaching and Research Forest, Cornell University, says the genera within the pine family here in New York include pine (Pinus spp.), spruce (Picea spp.), fir (Abies spp.), hemlock (Tsuga spp.), and larch or tamarack (Larix spp.). Genera in the cedar family include cedar (Thuga) and juniper (Juniperus).
Pines have needles that occur in clusters of two, three, or five. A cluster of pine needles is called a fascicle. The hard pines are a subgroup and include Scotch pine, jack pine, black pine, and red pine with two needles per fascicle. Pitch pine has three needles per fascicle. White pine is the only soft pine in the Northeast. White pines have slender needles which give the tree a soft-textured appearance. Pine cones have relatively few scales when compared to other genera of Pinaceae. Pines do not like the shade; they grow best in the sun.
Spruce have the presence of sterigmata which are post-like structures or projections on the stem where the needles are attached. Spruce also have a four-sided needle that occurs singly on the sterigmata - not in clusters like pines. Native spruce have a greater density of scales on their cone and include black spruce, red spruce, and white spruce. Blue spruce and Norway spruce are also common. Spruce grow well in full sun, but tolerate some shade.
Fir have needles similar to spruce in that they attach singly to the twig, but fir needles are attached directly to the twig. Balsam is New York’s only native common fir and the three-inch upright cone has deciduous scales. Needles are flat and two-ranked or attached on the sides of the twig. Balsam fir is tolerant of shade and is commonly seen growing in the understory, Smallidge says.
Eastern hemlock resembles balsam fir except that the cones are small – marble-sized. The needles are two-ranked, but the tree also has miniature-sized needles that are sporadically attached to the upper side of the twig. Hemlock also tolerates shade.
Eastern larch has deciduous foliage and can be found growing in bogs. The clusters of foliage are attached to a small branch that does not extend. The cones are similar in size to those of the hemlock, but are held erect.
Northern white-cedar has modified needles. Smallidge describes them as keeled, meaning the needle is flattened and folded to create an edge along the center of the needle. The cones sometimes appear as miniature wooden roses. Northern whitecedar is tolerant of shade and sometimes grows in dense stands. Cedar is the most rot-resistant of all the conifers.
Finally, junipers have two different types of needle structures. One is linear and awl-like and the other is scale-like. Eastern red-
cedar (Juniperus virginiana) will reach tree-size. Pasture juniper typically is shrub-size and prefers infertile soil. It has the awl-like foliage in whorls of three.

Lakeview Garden Club Plants Tree
In December, members of the Lakeview Garden Club of Greece planted and decorated a live evergreen tree on the grounds of the Greece Historical Society and Museum. The tree was donated by Barnes Tree Farm.
Adorned with white lights and edible ornaments, the tree provides beauty to the Historical Society grounds, and nourishment for birds in the area.
The edible ornaments consist of natural flower seed heads, strings of cranberries, sliced citrus fruits, peanut butter and bird seed filled pinecones. The top of the tree is decorated with a bird house.

A new toddler centered play space at the Community Center is now open.
This room is designed with soft play equipment to engage and encourage young ones to simply play. Signature pieces include two merry go rounds and a foot-controlled piano. The parents were kept in mind by including a restroom, equipped with both an adult and toddler toilet, within the space so they do not have to leave the room to use the facilities. Other features include wall mounted games and a slide.
“In Greece, we are proud to offer amenities for all ages. Last month, we opened up our rooms after extensive renovations which included an expanded senior lounge,” said Supervisor Reilich. “Our attention then focused on our little ones. Equally as exciting, we look forward to making progress on our expansion which will include a fitness center, dedicated spin bike room,
larger space for our fitness classes and an extension to our walking track. We hope that toddlers and parents alike will enjoy this new space.”
Here are a few house-keeping rules for the Toddler Gym. Parent supervision is required at all times. The ages of those who may use the Toddler gym are 0 to 5 years old. Socks are required and will be available to purchase if you have forgotten yours.

Indulging a Hobby
by Barbara Burke
In the Spring of 2021, after 40+ years as a radio broadcaster, Greece resident Dave Kane retired from his job as mid-day host at WCMF. Kane wasn’t off-air for long, “I’m still retired, I’m just indulging a hobby, it’s like a part-time job,” he said.
After much encouragement and requests for his return to radio from dedicated, loyal listeners, social media friends, and a meeting with Michael Black, Radio Program Director at WRUR, Kane resurrected his Breakfast with The Beatles radio show on Labor Day Weekend 2022. “Working at WRUR is the right fit. The focus here is on the music, live and local. Being part of the WXXI family, in partnership with the U of R, I feel flattered by this opportunity. There are a lot of veteran media people working here, and it is an education,” Kane said.
Breakfast with The Beatles, airs on Sunday mornings from 10AM to Noon on WRUR. It is the ultimate, perfect mix of past and present, group and solo Beatles music, on this date facts, history, back stories and accounts, all narratives chronicling the life and times of The Beatles. The main focus of every show is kept on the songs.
The Beatles are a group that Kane knows well, and says their musical meeting, and the resulting accomplishments, were the perfect storm. “They were four incredibly talented individuals that came together creatively. It was a tough time for our country, and they brought a message of peace and love that still resonates today. It is a hard thing to explain.”
Preparation for each week’s Breakfast with The Beatles show is a labor of love for Kane. “I’m still learning something new in my research. I work about five hours a week prepping the show. It is my
14 Greece News January/February 2023
only focus, and there is a wealth of information on The Beatles that we now have unlimited access to. I have the time now, and I am re-reading my library of Beatle books and searching the internet for information. Working in a commercial free format gives me more time to broaden out a great deal on the songs I play. The new deluxe box set for the Revolver album has a wealth of notes, song mixes and new information. You really hear Revolver in a different way.”
Kane came to the Rochester area in 1975 to study Journalism at SUNY Brockport. When he found out that he had to write something everyday, he wasn’t so sure of his career choice. “You know how you have great teachers that make a difference? I had a teacher that made a motivating speech in class that prompted me to visit the college radio station. I found what I wanted to do for life.”
Kane grew up in Brooklyn, with a father that enjoyed classical music and opera, in a house where music was always playing. It nurtured, in him, an appreciation for music. “Growing up in the 70s, close to New York City, gave me the opportunity to go to live concerts, at all the classic venues. The great artists and bands all toured through New York City. That’s what it was for me, concerts, concerts, concerts. Being in radio for my entire career was a dream come true. It gave me so many opportunities that I really never thought possible.”
And then there is the instantly recognizable, well acclaimed, gifted voice that Kane says is his everyday voice. “I never tried to develop a radio voice. I just speak in my natural way.” Ironically, Kane’s first job in radio came in 1979 from a small station in Geneva where the program director hired him, not for the sound of his voice, but because he could read copy. “At the beginning of each show I had to read five minutes of news. The program director said he hired me because I could put sentences together, and read in a pleasing way. Radio is really all about your ability to connect with your listeners on the other side.”
Kane’s broadcasting successes have not gone unrecognized. He was honored with a “Special Merit Award” during the induction of WCMF to the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2019. He was also nominated for the prestigious “Radio Personality of the Year” Marconi Award. He is a six-time nominee for
Billboard Magazine’s “Music Director of the Year.” Kane’s alma mater, SUNY Brockport, recognized him as a “Communicator of the Year” as well as a Communications Department “Alumni of the Year.” In 2018, he received SUNY Brockport’s “Outstanding Service Award,” and in September 2019, he was inducted into the WBSU Hall of Fame at SUNY Brockport.
As Dave Kane has said for years, “What’s better than a Sunday morning, waking up with a cup of coffee and The Beatles. You can listen to Breakfast with The Beatles every Sunday morning from 10am to 12noon on FM 88.5 WRUR/ 90.1 FM WITH, or stream online at wrur.org withradio.org or differentradio.org

visitors enjoying the flourishing Canal System as we continue to build on its role as a cornerstone of the New York experience.”
The grant program includes two funding categories: Event Support, with an award range of $500 to $3,000, and Tourism Infrastructure & Amenity Support, with an award range of $5,000 to $24,000. Applicants may apply for one or both categories.
“Investing in recreational amenities and heritage-based events is essential to the Corridor’s health, both in terms of improving residents’ quality of life and by facilitating the economic impacts of tourism. We are pleased to collaborate with the NYS Canal Corporation on this initiative and align our revitalization strategies,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
In 2022, 38 nonprofit organizations and municipalities received NYS Canal System Tourism Infrastructure and Event Grants totaling $259,300. The grants supported 11 tourism infrastructure and amenity improvements and 27 events.
Interested applicants are invited to attend an informational Q&A session on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 10am. For details, Q&A registration, and online application, visit: www.eriecanalway.org/resources/grants/ ABOUT
