Heading into this holiday season, Town Hall has been hard at work in many different areas. The Annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony and a Family Holiday Party took place on December 3, 2015 and it was a huge success. A special visit from Santa along with a performance by the Greece Arcadia Middle School Choir rounded out the evening perfectly. Late last month the Town Board unanimously approved the 2016 Budget. This budget is the product of many months of tough decision making and diligent spending practices. Two years ago, I set the goal of eliminating the use of reserve funds to balance the budget. I am pleased to say that my goal has been met; working with my department heads and the employees throughout Town Hall the 2016 budget does not propose to use any reserve funds. As the weather turns colder, we will be converting our pickle ball court into an ice skating rink that is free for all Greece residents to enjoy. Families can change into their skates at a booth that has been installed next to the rink. I always look forward to seeing families spending quality time at our Greece Town Hall Campus. Lastly, I would like to wish all of our residents and their families a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.
Stop into Latta Long Liquor this holiday season to choose your favorite toast. 18th Annual Shop With A Cop Day by Tami Raco
In 1998 Officer Joseph Copetta founded the Greece Police Officers “Shop With A Cop” program. The Uniformed Patrolmen’s Association supports this community outreach program. Officer Copetta, a Greece Police Officer with a big heart, created this annual program by working closely with the local elementary schools in Greece to identify children in need. Whether it was financial or emotional need, Copetta and the Greece Police officers wanted to help make their Christmas holiday special as well as provide support to the child and family. The program continued through Copetta’s career as he and the Greece Police officers witnessed the value it provided. They saw first hand the benefits it offered to the youth in the community by building supportive relationships with the children and extending it to the families, schools and local businesses. When Copetta retired in 2010, another caring and compassionate officer took on the lead role to carry on the Shop With A Cop program for the Greece Community. Officer Marybeth Kowalski has been working for the Greece Police for nearly 19 years. When she began as a new officer in 1997 she saw the incredible impact this Shop With A Cop program had on the Greece community. She loved volunteering her time to the program and seeing the positive impact it had on building relationships with the children and families in need. This became especially apparent to her when she would see some of these kids 15 years later and they would remember her and have special memories of this day with the police officers. As the Coordinator for the program, Officer Kowalski works closely with the Greece Central School district to
identify the children in need. This year, 30 children were selected from the six Title 1 Elementary Schools in Greece. The schools are Longridge, Craig Hill, Westridge, Lake Shore, English Village and Buckman Heights. Officer Kowalski will personally reach out to the families and invite them to participate in the Shop With A Cop program. The first Saturday of December, the children will arrive at the Wal-Mart on Dewey Ave in the morning for a fun meet and greet with the uniformed police officers. The officers volunteer to come in on their personal time to help with this program. They wear their uniforms to help the children learn that police officers are there for them to provide safety and support if ever needed. It’s also a good opportunity for the children to see that although they are uniformed officers, they are also real men and women. While the kids are meeting and forming bonds with the officers, Santa Claus will cheerfully arrive in a police car to surprise the children. The children will then take turns shopping with the police officers and will be given $100 to spend on their family and themselves for Christmas. WalMart generously opens their Garden Center up to host the day’s events for the Shop With A Cop program. In the Garden Center, a Christmas party is set up with Christmas music, pictures with Santa, Christmas crafts and snacks. The day of shopping and festivities ends with lunch served to the children, officers and volunteers. Funding for the Shop With A Cop Program is provided by the fundraising efforts of the Uniformed Patrolmen’s Association. They offer two fundraising opportunities each year continued on page 13

which helps pay for the costs that support this program. An annual golf tournament is held every summer as well as a mail campaign sent to all the Greece residents. The annual mail campaign and donation cards are being mailed early December.
Officer Kowalski plans to carry on the Shop With A Cop tradition not only by volunteering her own time to coordinate, it but also by continuing to encourage young Greece Police Officers to participate in this invaluable outreach program. “Focusing on need, making connections with the families and providing support is what this is all about says Officer Kowalski. Greece Marching Band earns their Highest Dome Score
Greece Marching Band just wrapped up their 10th season with an exciting performance of their show “Into Darkness: Journey to the Underworld” at the Syracuse Carrier Dome as competitors in the New York State Field Band Conference finals on November 1, 2015. The Greece Marching Band Blue Knights (GMB) celebrated a 4th place finish in the Large School 3 Division that included schools such as Corning/Painted Post, West Seneca West, and Hilton. They received a score of 82.95, the highest Dome score in GMB history and won 1st Place in General Effect Music. The Band Boosters and The Greece Central School District are very proud of each band member and their dedication to this activity. At a celebration early this month, senior, Krystal Jones, received the New York State Field Band Scholarship for her leadership excellence both on and off the field. Kelsey Grimes was honored with The 2015 Director’s Award scholarship. We are saying goodbye to Seniors, Jared Jones (Odyssey), Sarra Souissi (Odyssey), Brianna Leonard (Odyssey), Carolyn Marchetti (Odyssey), Savannah Vascukynas (Odyssey), Paul Toal (Olympia) and Krystal Jones (Olympia). Please join the Greece Central School District, the GMB staff and the GMB Booster Board in wishing them continued success in the future. They will be missed. If you know an interested school band member or a dancer that attends any of the Greece Central Middle or High Schools, GMB would love to share more information
with them. Please visit the GMB website at www.greecemarchingband.org for more information. Article and Photos by Beth Hughes Note: More pictures of Greece Marching Band at the Dome competition available online at www.GreeceNewsNY.com

The Dreams of a Young Boy from War-Torn Nazi Germany by Tami Raco
The Story of Horst George Nienaber Greece resident Horst George Nienaber was born in North Germany in 1935. He grew up in the struggles of a world wide recession and a war that most of us only know about from books and movies. During his early childhood Adolf Hitler was in power and eventually WWII began. Horst’s family was poor which made heat and comfort items sparse but the essentials were always provided to keep Horst and his brother and sister safe. In 1939 Horst’s father was drafted into the German Army and was forced to leave his young family. With the help of Horst’s grandparents the Nienaber family worked hard and maintained the family’s home and small farm. In 1940 Horst began school. Often the one mile walk to his school house was too dangerous to take while the aerial bombing and strafing runs were occurring. While at school, there were times the learning would be interrupted by air raids with fighter planes warring overhead. Horst, his classmates and teachers would quickly take cover in slit trenches built into the school playground. Once it was safe, they would be sent home. The dangers became a sad reality when Horst went back to school to learn he lost classmates overnight due to arial machine gun fire that riddled their homes. When war came closer to Horst’s town the German soldiers retreated, and his town was captured by the Canadian and British troops. The town people, including the Nienabers, surrendered peacefully so their homes were not destroyed. Horst recalls waking to see the soldiers asleep on straw near his cows. He was full of fear but also curious as he approached them. This was the time Horst learned his first English words. September 2, 1945, the war ended and Horst returned to school. He was 10 years old and still lived in danger, as the grounds were laced in land mines planted by the German Army. The curiosity in the young boy would lead him to collecting and playing with dangerous war items such as grenades, ammunition and various materials from shot down planes in the fields. At a young age, Horst learned the value of hard work and the lessons that came from it. He began farming at the age of 8. He helped take care of the family farm, including the animals. As a boy, he always dreamt of having his own farm and being a farmer. Horst was forced to leave his family, his schooling and his home at the age of 15 to look for work. He got a job working for a disabled farmer. He worked hard and learned all that he could and eventually became manager of the farm. In 1958 Horst decided to immigrate to the United States to pursue his dreams of owning his own farm. Horst was sponsored by his Aunt and Uncle when he came to the U.S. He found work on a farm in Henrietta. Two years later he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served this Country. After his discharge he became employed by

Eastman Kodak Company. He then met his beautiful soul mate Gisela at the Crescent Beach Hotel. She was also an immigrant who escaped from East Germany Communism before the Wall. She immigrated to the U.S. and was working as a talented hairstylist at B. Foreman Company. Horst and Gisela married in 1963 and they had two daughters named Heidi and Lynn. They raised their family in Greece N.Y. Horst spent 25 years working at Kodak. He worked hard, continued his formal education and learned his trade well as he saved his money to fulfill his ultimate dream of having a farm. In 1970 Horst’s dreams became reality. He purchased 50 acres of land in Avoca, New York and created his dream, Mountain Ash Tree Farm. The Nienaber family was very busy while living in Greece, raising a family while working full time and running a farm 80 miles away. Even though they worked exceptionally hard, they always made time for family vacations and special memories. Horst retired from Kodak in 1986 at the age of 51 and made the farm his full time work. He now has a 90 acre farm and plants several thousand Christmas trees every year. He has grown over 250,000 Christmas trees since he began. The Mountain Ash Christmas Trees were first sold in a rented lot on Fetzner Road in Greece. In 1998 the family purchased a home and a corner lot at 1340 Maiden Lane. This is now where Mountain Ash Trees their handmade wreaths are now sold. Thousands of families have purchased their Christmas Trees from this Greece favorite. The trees are also sold through Boy Scout troops, Garden Shops and Wholesalers. Gisela has since passed in 2011. After sharing love and a life with her for 48 years Horst misses her dearly. But he continues dedicating his time and energy to the farm. He does this with the help of his daughters, son in-laws and even his grandchildren. Horst plans to continue farming as Continued on page 19

long as he is physically able. He says, “My happiness is doing what I love by being outdoors with nature and animals and farming with family.” More times than not, a Christmas tree is purchased in the hustle and bustle of the season, with little thought given to where it came from. This year if you have the pleasure of having a Christmas tree in your home from Mountain Ash Tree Farm you will now have a glimpse of where the that tree came from, its roots, the history of its branches and all
the hard work and dreams that cultivated it. Mountain Ash Tree Farm, 1340 Maiden Lane, Greece, 585-227-5094 is open now through December 24, 2015 from 9AM-8PM selling trees up to 15 feet including Fraser, Balsam, Concolor, Grand Canaan, Korean Veitch and Corkbark Fir. Versatile cranberries can be savory or sweet by Kristina Galablski
The seasonal flavors of fall are so wonderful and welcome and linked to garden and farm fruits and produce: pumpkin spice, apple and cranberry are a few. I love cranberries and look forward to their starring role in both savory and sweet recipes during the holidays and through the winter. We often associate cranberry growing with the bogs of New England, but cultivation is not limited to that area alone. During my family’s annual road trip during the summer to Minnesota, we pass through the cranberry growing region of Wisconsin. The fields (bogs) are visible from the highway and cranberry cheddar is a popular item at the numerous cheese shops. It is very possible to grow your own cranberries at home. The only reason cranberries are grown commercially in bogs, is because they are most easily harvested by flooding the fields - a process which allows the low-growing berries to float. The crop is then picked with a unique style of mechanical harvesting. Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are native to North America and are typically found growing naturally in boggy areas because of their affinity for moisture and highly acidic soil. They are very low-growing, reaching only about four inches in height with thin stems. Cranberries bear their bright red fruits in the fall. I’ve been reading up about planting cranberries in a home garden. Lee Reich, Ph.D., author of “Landscaping with Fruit,” recommends that it is best to create a special raised bed for cranberries and incorporate lots of peat moss to provide soil texture and organic matter that the plants need. Acidify the soil with sulfur - cranberries prefer a soil pH between 4 and 5.5. Fertilizer should be used sparingly, and make sure the area is well watered. Droughts can kill cranberry plants. Garden catalogs are a good source for cranberry plants. Just a few plants, when happy with their growing condi-
Greece Historical Society’s Next Exhibit “Hometown Sports of Greece, N.Y.” Planning is underway for the Greece Historical Society’s next major exhibit. “Hometown Sports of Greece, N.Y.” will open in the spring or early summer of 2016. The Historical Society is currently seeking volunteers to do research on our local athletes and coaches. They are also looking for volunteers to help assemble the displays for the exhibit at the Museum located at 595 Long Pond Road in Greece. tions, will spread to form a mat, or ground cover. If you have acidic soil conditions, cranberries can make an interesting ground cover for landscaping purposes. Cranberries come from the same genus as blueberries and lingonberries – both of which love acidic soil conditions. My soil tests to the other end of the pH scale, so I know I would need to do some major soil amending to get cranberries to grow. The plants are evergreen, but leaves take on a purple tinge in the winter and are very cold hardy, requiring a cold winter to be productive. According to the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners website, cranberries should be harvested before the first frost and will continue to ripen in a warm, dry place for several weeks. The berries can then be put in the freezer without blanching, retaining much of their nutrition when preserved this way. As you plan and dream about the upcoming growing season during these “off” months, you might want to consider giving this deep red and nutritious berry a try.

Jim’s Ground Round
by Barbara Burke For the past two years, in the tradition of Jim Nucelli, his three youngest children, Jimmy, Kyle and Lindsay have been operating Jim’s Ground Round at 1205 Spencerport Road (Rt. 31) in Gates. Their father Jim Nucelli, along with his twin brother Ralph, owned and operated Jim & Ralph’s Restaurant for almost 30 years in Gates, first on Buffalo Road and then on Elmgrove Road. “We all grew up working with my Dad and Uncle, and we really loved it. When Jim & Ralph’s closed it didn’t take long for us to decide to open it up again,” says Lindsay. The restaurant is in a different location, but the traditions carry on the same. Traditions such as using fresh ingredients and making all the soups from Chicken Noodle to Italian Wedding and Friday Night Clam Chowder and sauces like their famous Sweet ‘n Sour Sauce and the meat-based Hot Sauce from scratch. All recipes originate from their father Jim, “Who so wanted us to keep the tradition alive for as long as our customers will have us,” Lindsay says. They are most famous for their Ground Round Burgers, each of which is hand scooped from fresh ground round using an ice cream scoop and then flattened with a pie plate to shape it. This attention to detail, and use of high quality ingredients, results in burgers that are juicy and full of flavor. Each burger is then cooked on the original grill that has been used in their restaurants for 32 years, since the first Jim & Ralph’s Restaurant opened. “We have had parts of the grill updated over the years, but it is still the original grill top where my father and uncle, and all of the employees over the years stood behind and cooked,” Lind-
say says. Jim’s Ground Round also serves traditional homemade meatballs, each one is freshly made, and hand formed by Kyle Nucelli and then cooked in homemade sauce. Other customer favorites are the Steak Bomber and Wings. On the menu every Friday is a traditional hand-battered Friday Fish Fry which includes fresh golden-fried Haddock served with homemade Coleslaw and crispy French Fries. Another popular item is their Half Chicken cooked Bird Land style with homemade Sweet ‘n Sour Sauce. Also on the menu are chili, sandwiches, salads, wraps, wings, kid’s meals and more. “We all really love what we do. The best part of the job is the customers. We see many of the Kodak employees that ate regularly at Jim & Ralph’s. I would say about 75% of our customers are regular customers who we see all the time. We really love to see new faces, so come in and enjoy some of our great food and our wonderful staff,” Lindsay says. Jim’s Ground Round, 585-413-0757, is open Monday Thursday 11AM-9PM, Friday and Saturday 11AM - 9:30PM, Closed on Sunday.

Stream & Lake Map of New York LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map - known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” The “Stream Map of Pennsylvania” was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstakingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 x 5 foot map. The map sold extremely well – until it was lost several years after it first appeared in print. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to the landfill. The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. The experts had always told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Holding an updated map, Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day.” Then, by combining Professor Higbee’s knowledge with computer technology – the STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK was created.
Why every angler and boater needs this map

Top Tips for a Safe Holiday Road Trip With Your Pet Planning to hit the road with your pet this holiday season? Before you pack up your car and your pet be sure to heed these pet travel tips for the road to help ensure your four-legged companion is happy and safe. •No Heads Out the Window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous. •Frequent Pit Stops: Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when your pet needs a potty break, and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag. •Proper Hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle. Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water. •Watch the Food Intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries -- that never has a good ending! •Don’t Leave Them Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves. •Practice Restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely secured in your vehicle. Utilizing pet safety restraints are the best way to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. Pet safety harnesses/seat belts, travel kennels, vehicle pet barriers, and pet car seats are all good choices for securing your pet. No matter what option you choose, make sure your pet does not travel in the front seat. •Safe and Comfortable: Whatever method you select to properly secure your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy. Careful preparation is the key to ensuring that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip. Braddock Bay Tavern & Grill, 372 Manitou Road, recently opened for business on November 5. The building is 150 years old and has been known by many names over the years, you may recall the old Braddock Bay Hotel. The restaurant overlooks the Bay and a 28 slip marina. The new owners are Carol and Dan Richardson. They purchased the restaurant and marina in May. During the past six months, the facility has been completely renovated. Features include a completely refurbished kitchen, updated restrooms and a completely new décor. The menu features creations from Chef Gerard Jamgotchian. Chef Gerard started the Apple Café in Hilton about twenty years ago and has served as pastry chef for many of Rochester’s finest restaurants. Recently he returned to Rochester, after operating his own restaurant in downtown Tampa, Florida for twelve years. International dishes such as Tuna Sashimi, Duck & Brie Crepes and Salmon au Champagne can be found alongside homemade burgers, fresh fish fry and fantastic salads. Stop by for lunch or dinner and see what a beautiful restaurant the Richardsons have created.
