(StatePoint) Whether you’re building a home from scratch or contemplating an upgrade, when choosing siding, there’s a lot more to consider beyond color. The type of material you use can impact durability, beauty and even energy efficiency.
JUST COMPLETED
Since siding is a long-term investment, you’ll want to make a decision from an informed place, especially with more options now available in the marketplace. With that in mind,

here are some things to consider about different siding materials: Weather Extreme weather events, including high winds and hot and cold temperatures can damage or destroy siding. Look for a product that is certified to withstand these conditions. No matter where you live, this should be an important consideration, as weather patterns have become more unpredictable across the country.

What to know before you replace your home’s siding and ICC 700 National Green Building standards.
from previous page Rot Fiber-based materials (such as fiber cement planks) absorb water, which over time can make siding more prone to rot, decay and even disintegration. At the store, ask to see siding options made of polymer-based materials, which are impervious to moisture. Environmental impact For improved energy efficiency, choose insulated siding, which will prevent undue loss of warm air in winter and cool air in summer. Where environmental impact is concerned, vinyl is a good bet, as it complies with environmental standards known as LEED
Maintenance A certain amount of upkeep will be required to keep your siding looking great. However, vinyl siding requires only occasional soap and water, whereas fiber cement requires re-caulking and repainting to maintain color and help prevent moisture absorption. First introduced in the 1960s, vinyl siding is the most popular home siding material today, due to its overall low cost, easy installation, durability and minimal maintenance. New products are particularly versatile, and easy to install and maintain, such as Heartland Siding by ProVia.

Upgrades to make your bathroom safer (StatePoint) From burns to slips to trips, bathrooms can be hazardous. In fact, hundreds of thousands of injuries occur in the bathroom annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hot water can be a dangerous bathroom peril. More than half a million scald burns occur in the U.S. annually according to the CDC. Prevent “shower shock” by setting your water heater at a maximum of 120 degrees F. One of the most potentially dangerous bathroom activities is getting in and out of the bathtub safely. Grab bars, hand grips or tub grips around your bathtub or shower
can help you keep your balance. And these days, safety features don’t need to look drab or institutional. Brands like Moen are making such fixtures available in a variety of styles and finishes to complement bathroom décor. More information can be found at www.Moen.com. Lastly, those who shave in the shower need to be extra careful. Avoid slips with a shower seat. To make this a practical option, use a handheld showerhead to maneuver water easily from a seated position. With a few safety updates, you can make your bathroom a safer place to pamper and prep.
Lawn care 101: Dig into spring with tips for a lush lawn BPT - Having a well-kept lawn not only will keep you in your neighbors’ good graces, it also adds value to your home. Lawn care doesn’t need to be complicated, but sometimes it just needs to be done. Taking steps to care for your lawn now can make sure you have a long, green summer ahead of you. Take a sweep What’s going on with your yard? Walk around your yard and check for wear and tear, good drainage and any damage caused by a long winter. Do you have barren spots or areas overgrown with weeds? Assess your needs before getting started this season.

Weeds and bald spots Nothing ruins a beautiful, sloping lawn like weeds. Get rid of them easily this year with products like Amdro PowerFlex Weed and Grass Killer - it starts working immediately and kills weeds and unwelcome grasses down to their roots. Bare spots should be patched with healthy grass and most kinds of grass can be seeded over. Fertilize It’s a step many people skip over, but a good quality fertilizer can be the key to a beautiful yard. Fertilize once in the spring and then again in the fall with a large percentage of slow-release nitrogen and micronutrients. Area garden supply stores also have organic fertilizers. Err on the side of under-fertilizing versus overdoing it - too much fertilizer can dry out your lawn or cause thatch to develop. Watering Lawns need on average about an inch of
water a week (either from irrigation or rain). Before spring gets into full swing, check your sprinklers. Turn them on and look for sprinkler heads that may not be working and replace any damaged ones. When you get into the season, if you’re noticing water is collecting in pools around the yard but everything is sprinkling smoothly, your lawn may not be draining properly. Consider removing the turf and adding a topsoil coat to level the ground, then replant. Get a mow on When you’re mowing your yard, run the lawn mower in a different direction each time so you don’t hurt your lawn by creating ruts in the turf. Leave the clippings out on your lawn as an extra fertilizer.

Planting tips: •Before transplanting seedlings you have grown or purchased at a nursery need to be hardened off. Skipping this step will almost certainly result in some or all of your plants dying. Hardening off seedlings eases their transition to the outdoors, where they will be exposed to the elements. The process involves gradually exposing plants to the outdoors, protecting them from full sunlight, temperature variations and wind. •Don’t let sprouts get too big before transplanting them outdoors. Ideally they should be about 4-6 inches tall. If possible, wait to plant your seedlings on a cool, cloudy day. If your seedlings get too large before weather will allow transplanting outdoors, transplant them into small pots with high quality potting soil. Keep fully watered in a sunny space until weather permits transplanting outdoors. •After transplanting seedlings outdoors, be sure to water them daily for the first two weeks, especially if the weather is dry and sunny. •Save and reuse your seed starter tray for the next season. Once the spring plants have been transplanted outdoors, you will be free to get a head start on your summer crop or later for a fall crop of cool weather vegetables. More tips to start your own seedlings can be found at www.Aerogarden.com. (StatePoint)

Check out what’s new for 2015 by Kristina Gabalski As you continue to decide what might be fun and exciting to grow on your plot of earth this gardening season, sit back, relax and consider some of this year’s new award winning plant varieties. Independent researchers every year check out hundreds of new varieties of flowers and vegetables grown in trial gardens around the country and those with the highest scores receive the All-America Selections (AAS) awards. Year-round backyard safety tips for busy families
Fencing A yard without a fence is like a house without walls, some people say. Fences help protect children from danger, keeping toddlers out of swimming pools, hot tubs, ponds, or away from traffic or strangers. Fences can also improve pet safety, keeping your pets in your yard and other animals out, and can reduce your liability by preventing injuries to uninvited guests on your property. With that in mind, be sure your fences and gates are functional and free of rust
Sun protection When the sun is bearing down, skin can be susceptible to burns and permanent damage year-round. And children’s skin can be even more sensitive to harmful UV rays. Your yard should have plenty of shady areas to seek respite. Plant trees and watch them grow. Install a canopy. Adorn patio furniture with an umbrella. Your backyard can be one of the most exciting places for your children to play through the entire year. A little prevention along the way will keep it safe and fun
Grilling areas should be “no play zones” Safety for Kids – The grilling area should be designated as a “no play zone,” keeping kids and pets away from the equipment. To help kids learn about gas grill safety, the Propane Education & Research Council has launched an interactive website www. propanekids.com.
3. If the grill does not ignite within ten seconds, turn off the gas, keep the lid open and wait five minutes before trying again. If the igniter fails to light the grill after two or three tries, turn off the gas and replace the igniter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 4. Regularly check the tubes that lead into the burner for blockage from insects or food grease. 5. Never attempt to repair, clean or clear blockages on a hot grill.
Some key safety tips include: •Ventilation 1. Always keep the lid open when lighting your grill. Don’t close it until you are sure the grill is lit. 2. Keep the grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, at least ten feet away from the house—and at least three feet away from trees and shrubs. 3. Never cover the bottom of the grill with foil - it can restrict air circulation. 4. Always use and store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright position. 5. After filling or exchanging a cylinder, take it home immediately. While transporting the cylinder, keep your vehicle ventilated and the valve closed or capped. Do not leave the cylinder in your vehicle.
•General Safety Tips 1. Always have one person in charge of the fire at all times. Never leave a hot grill unattended. 2. Never attempt to repair the tank valve or the appliance yourself. See a propane gas dealer or a qualified appliance repair person. Be sure to locate your model number and the manufacturer’s consumer inquiry phone number and write them on the front page of your manual. 3. If you smell gas and you are able to, safely turn off the cylinder valve, turning it to the right (clockwise). Immediately leave the area and call 911 or your local fire department. Before you use the grill again, have a qualified service technician inspect your cylinder. For information on the safe uses of propane, visit www.nypropane.com and www. usepropane.com.
•Firing up the grill safely 1. Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks. And never use starter fluid with propane grills. 2. Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder, and keep all flammable materials away from the grill.

Lawn Remove tree stumps and level concrete footings to avoid tripping. Lawn debris such as rocks could become projectiles when cutting the grass. So be sure to clear the yard. Additionally, children should never be nearby while you’re using motorized equipment. Store potentially dangerous tools, equipment and chemicals completely out of the reach of children, such as in a locked shed or garage.
that can render them useless or dangerous. “Rusty metal gate hardware that no longer functions properly or becomes a threat to children is a top homeowner concern, according to our research,” says Jim Paterson, senior vice president of D&D Technologies, which manufactures gate latches and hinges made of ultra-strong engineering polymers. Eliminate this worry by installing highquality fencing impervious to seasonal weather, ground settling and other factors that can cause gates to become misaligned over time. Opt for gate hardware that can be easily adjusted to function properly over the long-term. Additionally, be sure to install pool barrier access gates with adjustable self-closing hinges like TruClose and self-latching gates where the latches are out of the reach of children.

Improvement projects that increase a home’s value StatePoint - Selling a home can be challenging. The good news is there are a few tweaks that can give homeowners a leg up on the competition. With the warmer months being the most active time of year to buy and sell real estate, it’s important to ensure your home is seen in the best light possible. According to Homes.com, the top five projects that improve home equity are: Bathrooms If adding an additional bathroom isn’t an option, upgrade existing ones. Adding a dual vanity to a master or secondary bath improves functionality, allowing multiple people to use the space. Change out fixtures like faucets and shower doors to increase aesthetic appeal. If you’re on a budget, replace light fixtures or switch plates to help refresh the space. When working with a small space, highlight storage options with shelving and update or remove wall decor, paint or wallpaper. Kitchen Kitchen renovations can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 and more. If that’s not in your budget, upgrading cab-inetry and paint does wonders to liven up even the most outdated spaces. Add crown or decorative molding to “shape out” the kitchen cabinets and modernize the space. Repaint cabinets, or add new hardware to add visual interest and brighten dark spaces. Outdoor spaces Curb appeal adds immediate interest to
any home’s exterior. According to “Remodeling Magazine,” improving outdoor spaces can increase a home’s resale value dollar-for-dollar. Frame the front walkway with items that add visual interest, like flowers, potted plants, large rocks of various sizes and solar-powered lights. If yard space is scarce, hanging plants are another great, low-cost option. Extend outdoor projects to the backyard -- power-wash decks or patios and clean screened-in areas. Basement Basement improvements can optimize livable space and protect the home from extreme weather, mold, moisture damage and mites. Whether transitioning the basement to a home gym, office or family room, the basics remain the same: insulate well and waterproof. Maximize space by including shelving and storage units. If the opportunity exists, make the space feel open and inviting by creating an open stairwell, a trick that visually connects the upper part of the house with the lower, and filters natural light into the space. Mudroom Mudrooms ensure families stay clutterfree and have a dedicated space to drop stuff as they come through the door. They can also make potential homeowners feel welcome upon entry. While knocking out a wall to create a mudroom is expensive and labor-intensive, you can make a “drop zone” by simply anchoring a bench to an empty wall and hanging labeled storage units.
Do an AC check-up now (StatePoint) When the weather heats up, your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system quickly becomes a most valuable player in your home life and stays that way for several months. Do you know if it’s time to maintain, repair or replace your air conditioning system? Here are some preventive tasks to take that can extend the life of air conditioning equipment:
Westside News Inc. PO Box 106 Spencerport, NY 14559
•Change air filters: A general rule is to change indoor ductwork filters every three months or at the beginning of every heating and cooling season. Ensure the filter is sized correctly, fitting snuggly.
pressure. Any bushes or shrubs should be trimmed back away from the unit. •Let air flow: Maintain a reliable airflow to reduce moisture buildup which can lead to mold. Keep vents open. Similarly, keep internal doors open inside your home to maintain air flow. •Clean duct grills: Annually, clean the vents and grills at the opening of each duct in every room by lifting the grill out of the floor, wiping with a rag or vacuuming to remove dust and debris. •Keep condensate drain open: A stopped up condensate line can lead to expensive water damage. Keep the drain line clean and the drain tube open and clear to prevent backup.
•Keep the outdoor unit clean: Keep coils free of debris by hosing off with light
