Overcoming Excuses for Unhealthy Eating by Tami Mungenast

When it comes to making healthy changes to your lifestyle with your diet there are only two options… make progress or make excuses. Excuses can often become the language of the unmotivated. If you’re truly looking to improve your health and wellness through improved eating get to the root of your excuses and learn how to turn your excuses into action. Here are five of the most common excuses I hear, and some ideas on how to handle them. I don’t have enough time • Seek out easy quick recipes. There are countless recipes at your fingertips online. • Use your freezer. Make a double batch of a meal and have it in the freezer for future meals. • Take advantage of healthy convenience foods. Most local grocery stores have veggies cut and ready to be cooked and even prepared proteins in the meat department. If you’re short on time these are great alternatives for healthy meals. • Too busy? = Health is not your priority. We put our time where our priorities are. So ask yourself “where are my priorities?” Too expensive • Stick to a meal plan and stop eating out. That’s the best way to save money! • Use more economical priced proteins. Check the meat department for sale items or less expensive price per pound

meal items. • Keep it simple! Many tasty meals can be healthy and affordable especially if you minimize the number of ingredients you add. • Shop seasonally My family is picky • Sneak in some greens. Cook with them in pasta or casseroles. • Keep healthy snacks in sight. Even if your family is not on board with your eating plan, have some snacks for yourself handy and readily available. • Make kid friendly recipes. Google recipes that are healthy and kid friendly. Have your children help you with the cooking. I’m always on the go • Pack healthy portable snacks. If they need to be refrigerated bring a small cooler or lunch bag. • Make your own snacks. • Dine out wisely. Most restaurants, including fast food, have healthy options to choose from. Can’t control my cravings • The following issues might help you get to the root of the craving • Not eating enough calories • Too restrictive • Food allergies/sensitivities If you are looking to improve your diet and wellness, find a way, not an excuse. “99% of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses.” George Washington Carver

Sweetest Creations by Karen Fien

The Sweet Creations Gingerbread Display and Auction, November 3 - December 13, has been a holiday tradition for visitors to the George Eastman Museum for many years. Visitors have the opportunity to bid on their favorite gingerbread displays during the silent auction. The highest bidder on each display takes their treasure home after December 13th. Proceeds support restoration projects of George Eastman’s National Historic Landmark estate. The event is organized by the Eastman Museum Council and made possible by M&T Bank, Tasteful Connections Catering and Tops Food Market. New this year a select few exquisitely designed gingerbread creations will remain on display from December 1431. Kathy Connor, the George Eastman Legacy Curator and Sweet Creations organizer, contacted six participants that she knew would be submitting designs and asked them to take part in the newly extended display period called “Sweetest Creations.” Visitors can tour the festively decorated historic museum for the remainder of the holiday season, and see these six displays until New Year’s Eve. Three Greece residents participated in the Gingerbread Display this year, all are amateur bakers, two are part of the silent auction, and one is part of the “Sweetest Creations” extended display period. Crystal Worthington created a beach scene. This is the

second year that she has participated in this event. Crystal said, “I enjoy doing crafts, and it was a lot of fun to do.” Deb Berardi and her eight year old granddaughter, Angelina Maci, visited the museum in the past and viewed the gingerbread displays. They decided to make their own this year. Angelina originally wanted to create a castle, but they decided on an Italian theme “Casa di Dolce.” Deb said, “I enjoyed working with my granddaughter, watching her roll out the dough, and come up with different ideas for the house. She is the one who thought of the Italian cookie continued on page 23

The 35th Candlelight Holiday Tour by Karen Fien

A gardener’s delight - to share a love of gardening, flowers, plants and nature with others, to create beauty in a yard, in a home, in a place, to inspire others to see and appreciate what surrounds them. Lakeview Garden Club in Greece, along with Shorewood Garden Club, Woodside Garden Club and several members of the 7th District Federated Garden Clubs of New York had the opportunity to share their love of gardening as part of the 35th Candlelight Holiday Tour. This years’s Candlelight Holiday Tour was entitled Maplewood Gems & Beyond - A Step Back in History. The tour’s primary focus was on the Maplewood Area of Rochester, featuring three B&Bs and two privately owned residences. The tour also included The Ellwanger Estate Bed & Breakfast, 625 Lakeview Garden Club members with homeowners. Mount Hope Avenue, Rochester. The tour was sponsored by Section III, 7th District Federation crystal chandeliers that were saved from Southern manGarden Clubs of New York State, Inc., held on Saturday, No- sions, multiple fireplaces retrieved from mansions in the vember 11 from 11-4, and featured seasonal decorations Rochester area, and many antiques that they purchased over the years. Their home created a lovely atmosphere to accommodate the holiday decorations that Lakeview Garden Club of Greece displayed throughout the home and yard. A copper tub under the tree in the front yard was filled with evergreens, red twig dogwood branches, birch logs, sprayed alliums, giant pinecones, dried coneflowers and hydrangeas. The wooden boxes by the front steps and front window were similarly filled to catch your eye. The stone arched created by select Section III garden clubs. Katie Amato, one entry porch with a of Lakeview Garden Club’s coordinators said, “When we swag on the front decorate a home for the Candlelight Tour there is an ex- door and a lighted pectation that we use some aspect of natural plant mate- grapevine Christmas rial in each holiday design.” tree with assorted The beautiful home located at 501 Seneca Parkway is a hydrangeas and bur1929 Tudor Revival designed by architect George Lorenz, gundy ribbon created Bird cage photo by Joanne Ristuccia and restored by the homeowners Eileen McCabe and Tim an expectation as to Walsh. The holiday displays throughout the house contained mixed fresh greens, osage oranges, sprayed dried fungus, seed pods, rosemary trees and grapevine trees. The downstairs mantle and bookcases were decorated with grapevine, curly willow and dried hydrangeas with fairy lights and wrapped burgundy ribbon. There was a beautiful antique bird cage in the dining room that had a winter scene displayed inside, complete with a sledding hill and pond. The trees around the pond were dried barberry branches, birch branches, curly willow twigs and dried Marshall’s Memory Oregano. The miniature evergreen tree was made from a bottle brush and preserved in Lycopodium Moss. The bird cage was the first purchase the homeowners made when they moved into their home fourteen years ago, and it was a clever way to share this piece on the tour. The kitchen designs included a kale, garlic and miniature chrysanthemum arrangement and also a cork wreath with grapes and greens surrounding a pillar. Corks were also made into Christmas trees and displayed on the bar with ribbons and berries. The staircase had evergreen swags, hydrangeas and gold ribbons leading you up to the second floor. Located at the top of the stairs, on the second floor was an inviting outdoor porch with a mannequin dressed for

cold weather, a natural pineapple center piece on a table, and a bottle of wine and wine glass, just in case you wanted to relax a minute and enjoy the view of the backyard. The mantle in the master bedroom was gorgeous with evergreens, euonymus branches, burgundy ribbon and continued on page 19

The Ellwanger Estate Bed & Breakfast, 625 Mt. Hope Avenue, built in 1839 by James Hawks, was the home of horticultural pioneer George Ellwanger. George’s granddaughter Helen, the founder of the Landmark Society of Rochester, owned the home until 1982 when she bequeathed the property to the Landmark Society. In 2006 the property was purchased by Rosemary Janofsky, owner and innkeeper, and the house and carriage barn were extensively renovated. The historical showpiece was decorated by Joyce Lyle and Friends. The holiday decorations accentuated the classical beauty of the estate and created an elegant look throughout the home which features beautiful oak paneling in the Grand Hall, carved pillars in the Great Room and Grand Hall and a 1878 Hooks & Hastings pipe organ. The estate also features five fireplaces and a glass enclosed conservatory.

New Reader’s Corner at Greece Public Library

The Greece Town Board and the Library Board joined together for a ribbon cutting ceremony unveiling the new Reader’s Corner at the Greece Public Library, located at 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard in Greece. The Reader’s Corner at the Greece Public Library is located near the Adult Fiction Collection. Designed with readers in mind, it includes comfortable seating, “What to Read Next” brochures, bulletin board space for postings about upcoming literary events, and book displays for browsing. The creation of the space was made possible by a Mario D’Aiuto Management Trust donation to the library’s gift fund. The space was designed to encourage and entice library visitors to discover new genres, literary events, authors and reading formats. “The library as “Center for Readers” was identified as a priority in the library’s 2017- 2019 Strategic Plan, which was developed with in depth community input. The goal is for

library visitors to find the materials they are looking for in a timely and convenient manner, have help choosing among the options, and have programs and services designed to engage them in the wider community of readers,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Victory’s Road Inc.’s Katie Tracey, MHC, at left, and Marissa Mynter, MSW intern from Roberts Wesleyan College, are preparing for after school clubs at Lakeshore Elementary School in Greece. Nicholas and Alice Zumbulyadis are homeowners of 2 Seneca Parkway. A beautiful Tudor Revival built in 1910 for William Robinson, cofounder of the Barnard and Simonds Furniture Company that was located near the lower falls. This home has been restored by the owners and features a Neo-Classical fireplace surround, coffered ceilings and wainscoting. This lovely home showcased the holiday decorations by Woodside Garden Club which complimented the rich mahogany woodwork and the antique furniture throughout the home.

The Rose Garden Bed & Breakfast, 4 Fairview Heights, owners Cindy and Lou Rossi. Cindy is a member of Lakeview Garden Club and also the person in charge of putting the Candlelight Holiday Tour together. She decorated her home, along with her husband Lou. The 1907 Victorian Queen Anne-style home was restored by Cindy and Lou Rossi and now operates as a charming B&B. The Victorian era details throughout the home, including a Quoizel stained glass chandelier, arches entrances and numerous stained glass windows, enhanced the holiday arrangements and brought just the right holiday cheer to the tour.

She has an education in mechanical engineering but says, “I have and artsy side.” She has been baking gingerbread for twenty five years, and has been participating in the George Eastman Gingerbread Auction for ten years. She and her family work together, each with a specific job in creating their design. Her husband and son make the roof, her daughters do the sides and she does the front and the back. This year Andrea and

her daughter Meagan created a firehouse. She said that the design for the firehouse was a combination of places that she looked up online, including the Old Hermann Fire Department and City Hall. Andrea was very proud to have been chosen to take part in the new “Sweetest Creations” event. Visit eastman.org/holidays for more information about all the George Eastman House Museum holiday events. Two New Head Coaches Lead Teams to States by Tami Raco Derek Annechino, a lifelong Greece resident took the reigns as the head coach for the Aquinas Varsity Football team this season. Coach Annechino who is an AQ graduate (89) is no stranger to AQ football. He has been assisting the coaching efforts for 19 seasons at Aquinas and stepped up into the head coach position replacing highly respected Coach Battaglia. Annechino had big shoes to fill with his young team this year. The team was comprised of only 15 seniors of the 48 students on the team. The season began with a highly competitive game losing to Victor. The close game against such a strong team helped give Aquinas the boost of confidence that they needed to help drive them towards the States. “We have a great bunch of kids and we worked hard to put the best product on the field at every game,” said Coach Annechino. AQ senior TJ Jones was impressive especially after being forced to sit out his junior year as a transfer student from Spencerport. TJ plays running back, linebacker and kickoff returner. Nick Annechino of Greece, a junior at

AQ, is a second year starter (Center). The Debonis brothers are from Greece. Danny is a senior, and starter Offensive/ Defensive line, his younger brother Joe, a sophomore, is also a starter on the defense end. Bryan Magee, another young player is an AQ sophomore from Greece. He played tail back, full back and special teams. Coach Annechino led his young team to the state championship where the season ended to their loss to Lancaster. AQ finished 9/2 and ranked 13 in the state. “The team has a few weeks off but we will soon be starting back up with pre-season with hopes to take it further next season,” said Annechino. Girls Varsity Soccer at Aquinas also had a new head coach take over this season. Adam Schwartz of Greece replaced Dan Shoniker who retired. Schwartz a lifelong Greece resident (Cardinal Mooney graduate) came to Aquinas with 25 years soccer coaching experience. He is a long time Olympic Development Program coach, Assistant Director of Coaching for Fairport Youth Soccer, coached on continued on page 27

college level, coached Rochester Ravens and most recently the Rochester Lancers. Schwartz is licensed by the United States Soccer Federation National B and National Youth License. Schwartz inherited a team that was unranked in the preseason and surprised many when he led them all the way to the States. Aquinas Girls Soccer now shares the coveted title of state co-championships after a sudden death tie against Syracuse Westhill. Reflecting on his first season at AQ Schwartz said, “I could not have scripted it any better.” His team had 15 seniors coming in but he also lost three juniors to US Developmental Academy. Despite the Academy, Schwartz said, “We had leadership all over the field with these girls.” Aquinas Girls soccer was flying under the radar when the season began until the team began to impress with their winning streak. Captains Renee Vito, Emily Wolak, and Alana Piano, all Greece residents, were amazing players and leaders according to Coach Schwartz. Alana Piano, a senior at AQ, rewrote the Aquinas record book with her 30 goals in her senior year and 70 career goals. Ashley Plane (senior) and Leah Annechino (sophomore), also from Greece, were also strong players. Emily Cook, Greece resident and a junior at AQ, played a strong center back and Leah Campbell of Greece, a freshman, played back and midfield. Other impressive westsiders were Maura Palmer of Hilton (senior at AQ), and Erika Knapp the goal keeper, from Churchville. Coach Schwartz commented, “This is the hardest I have ever pushed any group of players I have ever worked with. Their work ethic and desire were amazing. I tip my hat to the girls this year for working so diligently day in, day out.” Next year the Girls Varsity Soccer will be much younger with 15 girls graduating this year, but Schwartz feels confident the team will continue playing strong. Kids Canyon Playground Wins Exceptional Park Design Award The Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society has declared that the Town of Greece has won the 2017 Exceptional Park Design Award for the Kids Canyon Playground. This award is given annually to projects that demonstrate excellence in design of park amenities such as playgrounds, sports fields, trails, and linear parks. The Kids Canyon Playground, which officially opened in July of 2017, is a 11,000 square foot nature-themed playground featuring precast cement sculptures, rocks and log climbers. The playground utilizes “linked play” which allows children to move across from feature to feature, encouraging more active, physical games than other types of standard playground equipment. Everything on the playground can be climbed on, which lends itself to taking chances and building confidence. The latest technology was used when designing this playground to ensure the safest, most accessible surface while maximizing the level of fun. For example, the playground is installed with Hydro Chill, which is a synthetic turf cooling system that can reduce surface temperatures by 50 degrees. As the turf surface is heated by solar radiation, moisture stored in the turf is released, leaving a cooler, more comfortable surface. This allows for increased playing time and greater comfort and safety for playground users. The Kids Canyon Playground is also the first playground

The BIBA app is available on both iTunes and Google Play and is free to download. The app offers games such as treasure hunts and obstacle courses to keep kids engaged and active. Custom designed for our playground, BIBA follows a strict “90/10” rule, which ensures that kids are physically active for at least 90% of the game with only 10% of their attention being spent on the screen. Reference Webpage for Free Little Libraries Supervisor Bill Reilich announced that the Town of Greece will be composing a webpage on their website that residents can use as a reference to find other Free Little Libraries around the community. This decision came after receiving an outpouring of positive community feedback and support regarding the recent announcement of a Free Little Library to be temporarily placed at the Greece Community and Senior Center before making its way to the Spray Park/Playground Area in the Spring. The Town of Greece is asking folks in Greece to take photos and send in location information for Free Little Libraries around our community which can be put up on our website. Please note that if you do not own the Little Library, we ask that you get permission from the owner before forwarding to us. They would also like to encourage neighborhoods and local businesses who may want to construct their own Free Little Library to participate and notify us so we can share the information with our residents. The concept of a Free Little Library is that families and children get a book from the “library” and also drop off books that they have already read for someone else to enjoy. It is set up so people can keep the books, pass them along, and/or share them as a community – no one is ever required to return the books and it in no way replaces all of the great opportunities to borrow books from our amazing Greece Public Library Branches. Photos can be uploaded to Supervisor Reilich’s Facebook page and once received we will start to compile the information to share with the community. Provided Information

Several Greece Rotarians were on hand to help the Odyssey High School Interact Club as they assisted with yard cleanup for three area senior citizens. Part of a Monroe County Cleanup program, matching youth groups with seniors needing assistance, the group enjoyed a pleasant sunny fall day making a difference in the lives of three seniors. The Interact students, rakes in hand, stand proudly in front of some of the 36 bags of leaves at their first house. Another dozen bags were added at the next two sites. The Clean-up was just one of the many community service projects the Club does each year, including their participation in the Rotary Holiday Party for BOCES 2 children and the Ziti dinner each January.
