Memorial Hall Dedicated in Honor of Community Veterans On May, 25, 2016 at Greece Town Hall, Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Greece Town Board Members Michael Barry Jr., Brett Granville, Andrew Conlon, and Diana Christodaro as well as Vietnam War Veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Gary Beikirch, for a Memorial Hall dedication ceremony in honor for our town’s veterans. Every year during the month of May, communities all throughout Monroe County and our nation take a moment out of their daily lives to both honor and remember the men and women who have fought and continue to fight to safeguard the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today. Memorial Hall is a testament to the spirit of their patriotism, courage, and duty and who through their military service courageously have put their lives on the lines of combat so that we today can enjoy the many freedoms that have been bestowed upon us. “As a son of a World War II veteran, I know first-hand of the sacrifices that our veterans have given for our great nation,” said Supervisor Bill Reilich. “Today’s Memorial Hall dedication ceremony serves as a tribute to the veterans who through their selfless act of patriotism put their lives on the line in order to safeguard the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today. This hall will forever serve as a testament to their sacrifices and heroism.” In addition to Memorial Hall, the Gary Beikirch Veterans Memorial Wall at Greece Town Hall proudly displays the names of over 5,000 service men and women from the Greece community who have fought during a time of combat. Every year, family members submit the names of their loved ones to be engraved on the memorial. This year, 20 names will be added to the wall and were honored and dedicated during the Towns Memorial Day ceremony. Criteria for individuals to be on the wall include, being a resident of the Town of Greece, served during a time of combat and have their Honorable Discharge papers and/or Form DD214. If you are interested in submitting the name of your loved one for next year, please contact the Supervisor’s office at 723-2311. Provided Information and Photo

GreeceNewsNY.com - Service Business of the Month
Farmers Insurance
Meet Nicole Curcio of Farmers Insurance. Nicole has had an entrepreneur spirit since she was a young girl. She began her first business when she was just a teenager in high school. As a teen, Nicole began a landscaping business that she successfully ran during her high school and college years. After she completed college she sold the business and obtained her Real Estate License. After many successful years in real estate sales, investment properties and mortgages she continued her professional path into Real Estate Appraisals. Nicole underwent Real Estate Appraisal classes and became licensed in New York State as a Real Estate Appraiser. She then launched her next business “Appraise Rochester.” As Appraise Rochester grew she expanded the business into all of New York State by opening “Appraise New York”. This state wide appraisal business generated the profits to help Nicole begin her newest venture in the Insurance industry. Insurance seemed to be a perfect complement to Nicole’s business background and her current client’s needs. She says, “Insurance is something that everyone needs especially those buying new homes or property.” Nicole researched the various insurance companies providing policies in the area and really liked Farmers Insurance. It is new to the area and Nicole is one of the very few agents in the area. The pricing was very competitive, service was outstanding and they offered a unique program called the “Confident
Planner. This program offers very affordable prices to well established and good credit customers. Nicole really felt offering affordable and dependable insurance would be a “natural fit” for her business and customers. Farmers Insurance has been open since May 2014 and is conveniently located at 888 Long Pond Road near English Road in Greece. The office is happy to provide quotes and service on Auto, Home, Renter, Life, Business, Motorcycle, Recreational and Umbrella insurances. To find out more about Farmer’s Insurance visit their office or call 2252100.

The Healthy Power of Drinking Water By Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach
Our bodies are made up of almost 70% water. Water intake and hydration have an important impact on how you feel and overall health. Often we can overlook our body’s cry for water. Symptoms of dehydration are often ignored. Common symptoms of dehydration: • Thirst • Dark Urine • Fatigue • Digestive disturbances like heartburn and constipation • Chronic fatigue • Premature aging • High Cholesterol • Weight gain With adequate water intake you can not only improve the performance of your body, but you can also improve your brain function. Here are some ways the water helps you: • Water helps maximize physical performance. This is particularly important during the summer and when the temps are higher. Dehydration can make exercise feel much more difficult both physically and mentally. Losing as little as 2% of your body’s water can have a significantly negative impact on your performance. • Energy and Brain function is strongly influenced by hydration status. Even mild dehydration can impair brain function, mood, memory, concentration, and increase anxiety levels.
• Hydration helps with fat loss. Studies indicate that by drinking more water you can increase your metabolism. By being chronically dehydrated you can slow your metabolism. Drinking water can help you feel full and as a result you avoid over eating. • Fluids helps the kidney and digestive tract to work optimally. Both the urinary tract and the digestive tract work best when hydration is adequate and consistent. Constipation is a very common problem and is often caused by not taking in enough fluids. How much water is best? Really no one can tell you that answer. Every body is different. Some say the 8x8 rule with 64 oz a day, some say you should drink according to your body weight. But it is really based on the individual. Do some self-experimenting and use your urine color to help you best determine what your body needs. Urine should be close to colorless most of the day. Drink often when you are awake. Make sure you drink at the first sign of thirst and drink more when you exercise or when it is hot outside. And make sure you drink in between meals to ensure you do not confuse hunger with thirst.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich A lot has taken place a Town Hall in preparation for a summer filled with many different events for all ages. As always, a lot of planning has taken place for our third annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. This year we will start out the day with our Third Annual Freedom Run 5k followed by the Scooby Stars and Striped Fun Run. If you are interested in signing up please visit www.runsignup.com and search for Town of Greece Freedom Run 5k to register or visit our Town’s website and download the registration form. Our featured performance will be the 80’s hit band Ambrosia followed by a spectacular fireworks display to finish the day in true 4th of July Fashion. The “Wild over Water” Zone officially opened for a second season on May 27th. One of the largest splash parks of its kind in the region, the W.O.W Zone was a huge hit last season and shows additional promise for another great year. I am happy to announce that we have many new improvements to the splash park this year as a result of resident feedback from last season which include increased shade, better seating, bottles of water

for sale and a new parking lot. Additionally we are constructing new restroom facilities for use near the splash park that will be located near the Town Court building. Also new this year is the pass system to get into the W.O.W Zone. Greece town residents will receive a free key tag which they will use to swipe in each time they visit. This key tag is also valid for a free membership to the Community Center, located on the same campus. Entry is free for residents, and $5 for out of town visitors. For more information on how to obtain a key tag for this park, please contact the Community & Senior Center at 723-2425. Coming up on August 2nd will be National Night Out. For the second time, we will be hosting this event at the Town Hall campus. Food trucks will be on hand to serve up dinner while the Greece Police Department and other local organizations will be hosting safety and anti- bullying demonstrations. On August 6th, I Dig This Town will also be held. The Public Works Department will be setting up trucks and equipment for kids to explore and play. Face painting and other activities will be available as well. On a final note, make sure to check out the free summer concert series at Town Hall. Starting out this season’s concert series was the Beatles cover band Beatlemagic. The concert drew out hundreds of people who enjoyed the great outdoors while listening to their favorite Beatles songs. Coming up next is Josie Waverly on Sunday, July 31st and Gimmie Buffet on Sunday, August 14th. All concerts are free to the public and take place at the Pavilion at Town Hall from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. I hope that you will take advantage of all of our upcoming programs, and if I can be of assistance to you in any other town related matter please do not hesitate to contact our office at 225-2000.

Feeding Neighbors In Need by Barbara Burke Since 1977 the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, 500 Maiden Lane, Greece has been serving people in Greece and Charlotte neighborhoods by providing food to those with emergency needs. In 1983 the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf was incorporated into a not-for-profit 501.c3, formed a Board of Directors and next year they will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of this all volunteer organization that provides nourishing food to individuals and families in need. “We are an all volunteer group, no one is paid for what they do,” says Publicity Chair Carol Coons. Coons is the first step in the process of receiving food from the Ecumenical Food Shelf. As a “verifier” Coons is responsible for prescreening those that call and request help from the Food Shelf. “We have an application process that has been working very well for us over the years,” Coons says. Requests come in for assistance when people call the Food Shelf pager. After answering a few questions, a representative gets back to them to verify that they qualify for emergency help. Those that qualify for assistance are not required to go to the food shelf, all food is delivered to the home of the recipients. Deliveries includes a “food unit” which consists of 3 boxes of canned and boxed food items designed to be used over a 3 month period and an assortment of fresh nutritional items that everyone should have including milk, bread, butter, cheese, eggs and meat. “We talk about the needs of the family and prepare the food from their requests,” Coons says. All food is delivered directly to the family in their home by Food Shelf volunteers. The Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf also has a service called the “Basket Program.” This is food assistance to people who live alone and have physical or emotional issues that prevent them from going out and providing food for themselves. The Food Shelf has a social worker that can visit when the food is delivered. Deliveries for the “Basket Program” are made once a month, on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Each basket is adjusted and carefully packed to meet individual dietary needs. Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf Chairperson Polly McCubbin says that during summer months there are many more than usual requests for emergency help with food. For many summer is a vacation time, but for low income families summer can be a struggle as families try to stretch

their dollars to provide the breakfasts and lunches their children receive at school during the year. McCubbin says, “One message I think is important is that we serve as the community’s agent to help people in Greece and Charlotte who need food. What we can give out to those in need depends upon what the community gives to us. We know that people want to help their neighbors. By giving nonperishable foods and monetary donations we are able to purchase fresh milk, bread, meat, etc. These donations are truly making a difference in lives of our neighbors.” Non-perishable food item donations can be brought to the Food Shelf on Mondays between 9AM-11AM. If this is not convenient call the Food Shelf pager at 585-277-5370 to make other arrangements. Monetary donations can be mailed to Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, 500 Maiden Lane, Rochester, New York 14616 ATTN: Treasurer. The Food Shelf needs the community’s financial support to continue providing services to those in need. The Food Shelf is also looking for volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are available in all areas, email gefoodshelf@ rochester.rr.com for more information. continued on page 20

Twenty-one Stories for Scouts descends on Rochester for 7th year Seneca Waterways Council Boy Scouts of America held their 7th annual 21 Stories For Scouts rappelling event on Friday, May 13 in downtown Rochester. The event took place at the First Federal Plaza Building with dozens of people rappelling 309 feet down the side of one of Rochester’s most iconic buildings. The event raised over $81,000 to benefit disadvantaged at-risk youth in the Scouting program, especially in urban environments, by providing camperships and financial assistance with uniforms, books and more to support their Scouting experience. The local scouting program provides opportunities for personal growth, character development, and leadership training for nearly 11,000 youth in over 400 scouting programs across a five-county area including 64 urban scouting programs serving 1,231 youth in the City of Rochester. “The adrenaline rush of this event for an individual rappelling is very similar to that which our scouts experience at camp when they challenge themselves to go outside their comfort zone,” said Stephen Hoitt, Seneca Waterways Council CEO. “When an 11-year-old scout is standing at the top of a 30 foot climbing wall at camp, there is some nervousness and fear. But by challenging himself and with encouragement, he gains self-confidence from his achievement. It’s no different for an adult preparing to rappel 309 feet - 21 stories. There is trepidation yet exhilaration at the accomplishment of overcoming barriers that may hold you back from being successful.” Provided Information Photos by Karen Fien
Greece residents, Matthew and Jennifer Kron make rappelling down the First Federal Building look like a piece of cake.
Hilton High School student Nolan Ransom, 17 year old Eagle Scout of Troop 18 at Lakeview Community Church in Greece, rappelling 309 feet down the First Federal Plaza Building. Nolan interned for Davidson Fink last year and was excited to hang outside the window and wave to the people he worked with. “The views of Rochester were beautiful, and I was glad to help support local scouting,” Nolan said.

From a small spark to a hot burn to a slow simmer and now cold nothingness. A bad mood igniting, spreading, and deforming reason. A week of living in its charred remains. He felt like dice without spots, a cone that had lost its ice cream, a book with no pages, a deed left undone. Almost nonexistent even, like a shadow or a ghost. She that meant the most to him lay on her side of the bed, as close to the edge as she could manage without falling off, which translated to as far away from Joe as she could get. An invisible fissure filled with frigid air cleaved the bed in two, assuring that Joe stayed on his side and Lainey stayed on hers. Joe couldn’t blame Lainey. He’d started the whole thing. He’d been a complete jerk. He was just in a really bad mood that day. Maybe he’d had problems at work. Maybe the popcorn he’d had for a snack had been stale and chewy instead of light and airy. Maybe some moronic jackass had cut him off in traffic and almost caused an accident. Maybe, maybe, maybe. He could make up excuses all day. But none of them were any reason to have said what he’d said and started the huge blowup with his Lainey. He couldn’t sleep. He hadn’t slept well the whole week. Not since the stupid argument. How could he sleep when he was cold even if he was warm, when he had a hollow ache in the pit of his stomach that had nothing to do with hunger? Joe got out of the bed and went to the window. The night sky was clear, dark and full of stars. He stared up, entranced, searching, as if the solution to his heartache might be written like Morse code in the tiny specks of starry light. But no divine advice en-

sued. With the soft light of the moon and stars to guide him, he wandered quietly through the house - up and down the hall, in and out of rooms. He peaked into the twins room to see them both sprawled out on their bunks, peaceful and quiet in their sleep. Dixie’s old room seemed a barren place now, just a bed and an empty dresser, awaiting a visit from its former occupant when she came home for the holidays. In the family room, he found himself looking at the books on the bookshelf. Lainey’s favorite, Stephen King, occupied two entire shelves. There was the Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games series. There were biographies of John Lennon, Townes Van Zandt, Marilyn Monroe and Arnold Palmer. There were books about history, photography, baseball and how to play the guitar. And then, there is was, the infamous ‘Our Honeymoon’. Joe took it down off the shelf, sat on a chair and began flipping the pages. He smiled and chuckled and he cried as the past twenty-five years flew before his eyes with wistful nostalgia. Why had he made such a fuss? So what if she called each anniversary another honeymoon? Honeymoons were good things. How would he feel if instead she chose to call each anniversary another day in Hell? How would he feel if there were no anniversaries at all? No Honeymoon #26? With the album in his lap and visions of wedding rings and cruise ships, candlelight and champagne, and Lainey and the three kids dancing around in his head like sugarplums, Joe fell asleep. “Joe?” A soft voice whispered in his ear, a gentle hand touched his shoulder. Still half asleep, Joe was sure this was a dream. He had left Lainey sleeping, her back to him, trying to ignore him, to pretend he didn’t exist, cold as an Eskimo in an arctic wasteland. But the gentle pressure the dream hand applied to his shoulder remained. He could feel warm breath on his cheek. He opened his eyes and there was Lainey’s face, almost touching his own. “You weren’t in the bed and I got kind of worried. I do love you, you know. It’s just that… Well, you know, we’re both so…. Oh Joe, I’m just sorry. I’m sorry for everything. I don’t want to fight anymore.” “You don’t have to be sorry. It was all my fault, Lainey. I’m the one who’s sorry. Sorry for being such a stupid jerk. Sorry for letting my stubborn streak get the best of me. I love you, Lainey! I don’t want to fight anymore either.” “Well, I’m stubborn too and I said such horrible things, and… ” “OK, so now are we going to argue about who’s the most stubborn and who said the most horrible things?” “No but…” Joe placed his finger lightly against Lainey’s lips, stopping any further conversation. He pulled her onto his lap and they kissed. It was a long, slow kiss that spoke of apologies, forgiveness, and love. It was something how a bad mood could switch things around, taking the things that you loved the most about someone and transforming them for a moment into something that you disliked instead. The tinkling laugh that was like sun-kissed drops of cool rain on a parched soul became a sound that grated your eardrums and scraped on your nerves. The innocent and childlike spirit that made you feel like every day was a holiday, instead seemed silly and childish – irritating and annoying you to your core. Joe and Lainey cuddled on that chair for a long time, till the continued on page 23

Know The Impact of Retirement Goals on Your Future?
When you retire, what will you do? Travel? Pursue your hobbies? Whatever your goals, you’ll need to connect them with your financial situation. For example, if you’d like to travel the globe, consider placing a certain amount of money each year in a liquid account that offers significant protection of principal. Set aside enough money to cover all your travels for a year, and when it’s exhausted, you’ll know it’s time to stay home for a while. Also, if you’re going to pursue your hobbies, don’t get carried away. Be aware that some people do get over-exuberant and spend more money on their hobbies than they can really afford. So have fun with your pursuits, but set a budget — and stick to it. Think carefully about what you’d like to do when you retire — and tie your objectives into your finances. By being aware of both your dreams and your “bottom line,” you should be able to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

I know I probably need hearing aids but they seem so expensive. How do I make the right choice? At Hart Hearing Centers, we’ve been providing comprehensive audiology services for nearly 40 years. Our years of experience will help you make the right choice. Buy the best hearing aids you can afford. More and more insurance companies are providing a benefit to cover at least part of the cost of hearing aids so be sure to see if yours does. You might be pleasantly surprised! Keep in mind that the best hearing aids are made by companies you’ve never heard of because they spend their money on research and development. Expect the best, but do not expect new ears. You have two ears, buy two hearing aids. Ask any professional and the answer will be the same: The human auditory system functions optimally with a binaural signal. So to accommodate differences in each ear, you need two. Make sure you are comfortable with the professional you are dealing with. See an audiologist. You want to go to someone you can trust and make sure their #1 goal is to find what works for you. Melissa Cushman, Au.D, Doctor of Audiology

Ralph Presciutti retires as Commander of Greece American Legion Post #468
by Tami Raco At the age of 18 Ralph Presciutti, a Greece Athena graduate, enlisted in the US Army and served as an Infantry Soldier Airborne. When he came back to his hometown of Greece he helped manage a family business and then in 1994 he began his career working at Bob Johnson Chevrolet. Shortly after marrying his wife Julie he became active in the Greece American Legion Post #468 through his father-in-law who served in the Army during the Korean War. Ralph and his family became active in the Legion events. In 2007 Ralph became an official member of the American Legion. As a member he was involved with assisting with many of the social activities the Legion had to offer like the annual clambake and USO Shows. He recalls what drew him to becoming so active in the Legion is the feeling of a strong comradery that he has only felt once before in his life and that was during his time in the military. Greece Chamber Business & Labor Law Conference to Address Critical Issues THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2016 - Hose 22 Firehouse Grill, 56 Stutson Street, Rochester. As a business owner are you aware of how costly lawsuits and government investigations can be? On June 30, 2016, the Greece Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a conference that will include presentations on how to avoid such lawsuits and investigations. The Greece Chamber’s 2016 Business and Labor Law Conference is part of the Chamber’s newly introduced Competitive Edge Series, which has been created to help small business owners stay on top of critical issues that can affect their business in time consuming and costly ways. At the June 30th conference, attorneys from Rochester law firm Harris, Chesworth, Johnstone & Welch will present two valuable workshops that will address emerging topics such as paid family leave, employee wages and job classifications, the Affordable Care Act, benefits, insurance, incorporation options and strategies, and business and labor law. Immediately following the morning workshops will be a luncheon with Keynote Speaker New York State Senator Joseph Robach, who will discuss State legislation and resources for business. The Competitive Edge Series: Business and Labor Law Conference is open to all regional businesses and corporate/nonprofit professionals. Attendees can take advantage of a 30-minute networking period from 8:00 am – 8:30 am and again from 10:00 am – 10:30 am. Those attending the conference can choose just one workshop or attend both with the luncheon also being optional. The networking sessions and luncheon, with Keynote Speaker, are available to workshop attendees only. Workshop fees include a continental breakfast. Greece Chamber of Commerce Members: Workshop 1 or 2 - $35; Workshop 1 & 2 - $50; Lunch - $20. General Public: Workshop 1 or 2 - $50; Workshop 1 & 2 - $70; Lunch - $25. Get the latest business information and legal guidance to help protect you and your business in a rapidly changing landscape with this concise, affordable, engaging half-day conference.
